The Anniversary Party is a whodunnit set in a secluded Alaskan resort. The cast of characters would feel right at home in any three act farce. An aging movie star and their much younger wife are celebrating their momentous single year anniversary. Friends, ex’s and staff become embroiled in the mystery of who is trying to kill the movie star.
Generally I am a fan of Lucas as her previous novels are well written hard core mysteries. The lighter touch given to this novel is just not my preference. This being said I found the storyline had a few bumps along the way. The movie star’s health fluctuated greatly at times in an overtly convenient manner to move the plot forward. So too did her keen intelligence and knowledge of her friends and ex lovers.
Although The Anniversary Party was not my cup of tea I know there will be many others who will ring its praises. After all Frances Lucas is a good and entertaining writer.

“The Anniversary Party” by Frances Lucas was a gripping thriller that had me hooked from beginning to end! The mix of suspense, shocking twists, and humor made this such a fun read. I loved the interactions between the characters and the shared history that added so much depth and tension to the story. The story was intense, entertaining, and absolutely unforgettable. I loved it!

The Anniversary Party has all the ingredients for a gripping ensemble mystery - nine women at a reunion in the remote wilderness, a will announcement, past and long-buried secrets and possible betrayals. This book immediately intrigued me – I love character dynamics and intricate webs of friendship and resentment.
First of all, I must say that the blurb really does this book dirty. Most plot points are exaggerated, and it’s a bit confusing what the focus of the story is - Darby and her wife are the party hosts, but Hank and Emily are presented as "main characters" with other 5 women not mentioned at all. The large cast is a gripping point but the blurb is mudded.
Characters
As I mentioned, the ensemble is a strong point of this mystery, but the book struggles to make nine women feel like nine distinct people. Chapter 6 introduces most of the ensemble. Almost every introduction leads with – or is entirely composed of – physical description, specifically hair. The first introductions are an opportunity to make characters' personalities and voices visible in behavior and detail. That opportunity is largely missed. The main difference between non-main characters is physical descriptions and backstory, but they don’t act that differently. Speaking of acting, we have a cast of people of different ages: a 64-year-old comedian, her 24-year-old wife, 48-year-old photographer, etc. But all characters read like 20-30-something with no difference in the way they speak. An all-female cast also means every character is referred to as "she", and in some moments it felt ambiguous which woman was speaking.
Structure and Pacing
75% in we get what I’d call the real rising action of the story, which is too late for a mystery/thriller. We spend too much time in the exposition stage, which means we borrow time from the later climax and resolution. So in the end we have a lot of setting up, but the mystery reveals are too rushed and back-to-back. The slow build can work but in this case it didn't feel intentional.
In the end, I decided to give this book 2 stars. It’s not something I’d recommend to people looking for a mystery/thriller book, but if you're curious about ensemble dynamics and don’t mind slow pacing, there's something here once it gets going. The premise has legs, but the execution needs more work.

This is a humdinger of a character study and thriller in the locked room style of Agatha Christie. We have a varied cast of characters, including our MC Henrietta “Hank” Morris, aging celebrity Darby Decker (for whom Hank used to work), Darby’s much younger bride of one year, Ivy Preston, Hank’s ex Emily Clark, and others, all women, all wondering what to expect. They’re all flying up to a remote lodge in the Alaskan wilderness to celebrate Darby and Ivy’s first anniversary. Darby is rich and paying all expenses and has rented out the entire lodge for the several days of the party. Emily is coming as the photographer because that’s what she is, and she’s good at it, but she is hesitant because Hank will be there. Hank also is hesitant because Emily will be there – but maybe this is a chance to mend the rift from years ago that split them up. When they all get to the lodge, the fun begins! They drink a lot and play Truth or Dare, and the party goes….. well, you’ll have to read it to find out! Needless to say, there is mayhem galore.
This is a delicious mystery that will keep you guessing. What will happen next? Who is really who? Everyone has secrets! Just when you think you have it all figured out, Frances Lucas throws a monkey wrench in your well-thought-out theories. I haven’t been this boondoggled or this thrilled with a mystery in a long time.

The Anniversary Party is a quick and fun read. The style and tone are lighter than other Lucas books I have read. But the mystery is intriguing and trying to figure out the evil one in their midst was enjoyable. The remote setting creates a spooky atmosphere and I enjoyed the fact that all the characters are female. I especially liked that they weren’t all 21 years old. Older women have lives too!
Our heroes, Hank and Emily, are two women who had a brief relationship decades earlier and are thrown together again to attend a one-year wedding anniversary party for Darby Decker, a movie star and comedian. Hank is there as Darby’s best friend and Emily is the official event photographer. Darby Decker, is flamboyantly larger than life. I am always intrigued by people who so totally control any environment they enter and she is an example of that type of person. She is quite wealthy but it’s the force of her personality that is her real power. Like most public figures she has an entourage. In this case, many of them are former lovers of Darby. But are they really her friends or just women out to use her for their own purposes?
I was pleased with the twist at the end. Things are never quite as they seem.
If you haven’t read Frances Lucas yet you will be pleasantly surprised. The Anniversary Party is a good place to start.

Not a bad book, just really not my style. A sapphic variation on the closed room mystery with a cast of aging (not old) lesbians all with ties to each other some stronger than others. The pacing is well done and the writing is nice but with the exception of Emily and Hank the other characters are 2-dimensional, we never really get to know them.
The sapphic romance is nicely done and I did not see thee little twist at the end coming.
The book will do well I am sure - there is a large following for this type of book. If you are taking an interstate bus ride or waiting for your number to come up at the government center you could have a worse companion that this book, the author never commits the cardinal sin for this type of novel by being boring or repetitive.

Emily is an established photographer struggling to balance her work while looking after her ailing father. She definitely has gotten over her ex, Hank, though she still blames the woman for their falling out. Despite their past, these characters are fairly relatable and easy to root for.
They are forced to face their past at a celebrity comedian, Darby’s anniversary party, even as danger mounts during the event. Though I wished for Hank and Emily to talk through their conflicts a little more.
While Darby’s intentions were relatively obvious, I was pulled in by the mystery of the perpetrator and their motive. The ending was particularly chilling, and raised way too many questions that had me re-reading the entire novel before I even put it down.

I'm pretty sure I've read every book this author has written. This one feels a little different, but I still loved it. Emily and Hank were partners years ago. They meet again at an anniversary party at a wilderness lodge in Alaska. (I think all the author's books are set in Alaska.) Hank wants to apologize for something that happened a long time ago, but Emily doesn't want to accept it. Add to that, guests are disappearing and someone may be trying to kill someone else. There's a lot of drinking, chaos, and partying going on. I think the author does a great job of keeping nine main characters straight and giving them each a distinctive voice. I also loved the age gap thing and reading about older characters. It's hard to find books about people in their 40s, 50s and even 60s who don't come across as grandmas. (Sorry if that's offensive to anyone. I love my grandma!) Anyway, this is a fun read and I'm recommending it for my book club's next book.

If you love a fast-paced story with mystery and humor, The Anniversary Party is for you. From the very beginning I was pulled in by the characters Hank (a woman) and Emily, the woman who broke up with Hank years earlier over a selfish move by Hank. Hank has grown up since.
Then you bring in the anniversary party host, Darby Decker, and all bets are off. Darby is both loving and maddening, demanding that her guests play games that end up setting them against each other.
Pretty soon, guests start disappearing and Hank and Emily, in the midst of rekindling their romance, try to figure out what's happening. I thought I had it all figured out (and I almost did), but I was unprepared for the twist at the end. I won't say any more, just that this was an excellent thriller and so much fun to read.

First of all, I loved the location - a lodge in an Alaskan park rented by a wealthy and eccentric comedian. Darby was a hoot. I could picture her creating havoc among her guests and insisting everybody do things her way. It made me feel sorry for her wife who just happened to be forty years younger! Yes, you heard me right, Ivy-a girl with secrets of her own is forty years younger than Darby. It made me think of Holland Taylor and Sarah Paulson, two actresses I adore.
Second, I loved both Hank (the main character, in my opinion) and her ex, Emily. Hank is sarcastic and funny, but you can tell right away she has a good heart. Emily is more closed off, but this is what makes them a good pair.
I admit there were several twists I didn't see coming, but the end knocked my socks off. I can't wait to see what Francis Lucas comes up with next.

I'm afraid this book did not really do it for me although I am sure it would appeal to others. The overall concept was great. I found the first half of the book quite confusing trying to grasp who each of the characters was, their backgrounds and relationships to everyone else. Once the story really got going I found there were far too many subtle mistakes and inconsistencies in the plot that most people may not pick up on but I found distracting. Then as it drew nearer the end it all became a little too farcical and did not make total sense to me. I have enjoyed the previous two books by this author and enjoy her writing style so it will be interesting to see where she goes with the next one.

The Anniversary Party pulled me in with its isolated setting, complicated history, and growing sense that something was seriously wrong. I especially enjoyed the tension between Hank and Emily, with their shared past adding an emotional layer to the mystery. The party games and disappearing guests kept me guessing about who could be trusted.
A tense, atmospheric suspense read with plenty of secrets and twists. If you enjoy stories where everyone is a suspect, this one is worth picking up.

A different and engaging mystery with intricate romantic relationships and friendships, where Darby Decker, a former movie actress turned famous comedian, has gathered her recent past lovers to party and help celebrate her wedding anniversary. Jealousy and conflict abound, along with rumors of a hideous recent murder in the area and suspicious death threats against our guest of honor.
The POVs of Hank (Henrietta), best friend and former lover of Darby, and Emily, a photojournalist and Hank's ex-girlfriend, steadily lay a foundation with a feel of building toward something unknown, with mounting tension, while the possibility of a second chance for them begins to simmer.
Then we suddenly land in the midst of what the hell. Who's trying to take Darby out? Why is there an armed bodyguard stirring the pot of animosity? Set in a remote Alaskan wilderness lodge, this party has everything a good mystery should. There are a cast of characters with varying backgrounds and relationships to each other. Throw in dangerous wildlife, people disappearing, and a twist you won’t see coming and you have a delicious read!

A fast and entertaining novel about a group of women getting together of a one-year anniversary party of a woman in her 60s who's married to a woman in her 20s. This one is full of fun, easy to relate to characters and has some mighty big twists. If you enjoy being surprised by books, it's for you.

Oh, how deliciously twisted this book was!!! I read it in 24 hours, it kept me glued to it day and night to finish it, it was addictive. A classy thriller, lovable characters, perfectly developed, a gripping story. The last chapter literally made my jaw drop, and now I am a wonderfully deceived and shocked reader, happy with the adventure :)
If you haven't read anything crafted by Frances Lucas, give this one a try and then keep going with the rest!

Review of advance copy
This was a fun read, it did take awhile to get into the story - the female named Hank kept throwing me off. Basically it’s a group of lesbians stuck in AK at a resort that their host had rented. Murder, lies, deception ensue. I figured out the twist before it happened and disliked the final wrap up… it feels like it was thrown in at the end. If you like a good twisty who dun it this is a quick and easy read. I enjoyed the build up on Hank and Emily… but all other characters were kind of two dimensional. Really felt like a short Frieda book.
