Jumping into a series with the third book isn't usually the best way to get started, but I didn't feel lost without backstory. I did, however, feel lost because of the pacing and rapid-fire introduction of swarms of characters. The chapters are singularly short (typically 5 pages or less), and almost every chapter briefly introduces one new character before barreling on to the next. When their names were brought up again later in the book, I had no recollection of who any of them were. Then again, keeping track of characters is never my strong suit, so maybe you shouldn't take my opinion on that matter too seriously. I did appreciate the originality of the story, the unique world it's set in, the interesting personalities of the characters I actually did get to know, and the creative turns of phrase that peppered the writing.
