Was one soul worth the lives of millions?

The quandary was one that Rydell King had no choice but to face. No matter the answer, the truth remained—innocence was created to destroy him. She was beautiful…extinguishing her to save his people seemed impossible, and maybe it was. As an immortal, his focus was to destroy the curse upon his people, as he devoured the emotion that bore him—exaltation, no matter the cost. She made him question everything.

(Source: I received a digital copy of this book for free on a read-to-review basis. Thanks to author Jamie Magee and NetGalley.)

“Deep down every soul knows their fate.”

This was an okay story, but it was a bit confusing.

Basically we had three girls from two families, who were actually half-sisters (even though they didn’t know it), and then we also had parts of the story which seemed to follow their parents, and also some other guy as well.

There was some talk of covens, escorts, spirits, and other stuff, none of which was very well explained, and while the parts with the girls were enjoyable, the rest was unfortunately not quite so enjoyable, and pretty confusing.

Looking at this book on Goodreads I can see that this is part of a series, but I really don’t feel inclined to read the previous 15 books having read this one. Maybe it would have been better if this book had been listed as being part of a series on NetGalley.

This book would have probably been a DNF if I wasn't highly motivated to finish it. For that reason I am only writing a short review.

Mainly I found this book confusing, and maybe that's because it's the 11th in the Insight series and 16th in the Web of Hearts and Souls series. Although other reviews do say it could be read as a standalone, I found it extremely confusing and parts unexplained so I wouldn't recommend that you read it as a stand alone. I would normally read books in order but since this one was on netgallery which is why I'm reading the series out of order.

I might have been motivated to read the other books in the series if there wasn't so many of them.

I'm very sorry 1.5 stars but thank you for giving me the opportunity to read it.

Oh man, what did I get myself into…

I made the fatal mistake of reading this before any other book in the series, just because I saw it on Netgalley and thought it looked interesting. I failed to do my research. And I found myself completely and utterly lost.

Do not be me. Read the other books first. Apparently this can be a standalone, but it’s much richer when you first see some of the characters in her other books. I did not have that advantage. This was all entirely new to me. I didn’t even know what they were until they had mentioned witches like three times already- I saw ‘immortality’ first and thought vampires. Silly me. (I did not even figure it out when they kept talking about covens.) I don’t have much experience with witches, so I really had no idea what to expect. And to give her credit, the author did try to explain things as we went along, but that was the problem. As we went along. There was no real backstory or true exposition. We started out with crazy witchy things happening, and then jumped into the future with more crazy witchy things. Then she revealed all the crazy witchy things that had happened in between the two times. It just felt like the timeline was all screwed up so it was hard for me to understand.

One thing that was great was the characters and their relationships. All done really well. Immediately I could see how Raven and the twins were a unit, and how Soren could fit into that unit. Their family was pretty solid. The other relationships were pretty solid too.

The plot was pretty interesting too. The usual prophecy business, but it was especially interesting how she was supposed to kill this guy. This guy that was part of a love triangle. She was supposed to kill him to weaken a truly bad guy. While the guy she liked actually wanted to bring down the bad guy too. It was complicated. So she had to kill him for the greater good, but she didn’t want to because…love, you know…

So that was really interesting. I was actually rooting for Rydell instead of the guy who was supposed to be ‘the other half of her soul’ or somesuch business. I mean, we barely even saw the second dude, even though it was fate and blah blah blah. Rydell didn’t match up with her soul, but he was there for her and pretty much the perfect dude…so that whole story could go somewhere really interesting. I guess it was this whole deal that kept me from putting the book down and saying “oh man, I just can’t keep up with this, I have no idea about witches and Escorts and anything really, I give up.”

The ending was one of those where you think something has happened and you’re ready to throw the book at the wall and say “Now why did I read 300 pages of this just for it to end like this, thanks for wasting my time” but then it turns out like maybe it’s not what you think. That’s truly awesome. There are some books where you’re positive there’s a happy ending and it’s the getting there that makes it fun and worth the read. And then there are the books where it could go in any direction and you’re waiting with bated breath. (And some books like this one where you’re 80% sure there’s going to be an ending where the main character slays the evil bad guy but you’re not sure how many innocents will die in the process, and you’re just reading it for that and some other sub-plots or particulars.)

Don’t get me wrong, this book was a long hard slog. Especially for someone like me who had no idea about any of this witchy business beforehand. It was a long book. And I was just barely keeping up. Of course I read a little faster during the intense/romantic moments, so that helped. But there was some good plot going on and great characters. So I can see how if you’ve read the other books in the series (or at least some of them), this book would be amazing.

The ending isn’t solid, though. It’s pretty much a cliffhanger, but not a really awful one. One of those where you’re 90% sure what’s going to happen, but you would probably continue the series anyway. Eh. I know I won’t. It’s way too complicated for me to handle right now, especially after being introduced to the witchy world through this book. Like I said, my mistake.

Reaction upon finishing: *blegh* *ugh* How dare it play with my emotions like that *blugh*

(also, in the advance version I got, there were a LOT of errors, especially towards the end)

Review: WHY DID THE AUTHOR DO THIS TO ME!!!??!
I can't believe it, this book had so much action, the way the characters developed was incredible, and then the big battle in the last 5% of the book?!!! That's crazy!!!

There's a death of a character you grow to love, but of course that somebody is not going to give up on dying (when you read the book this will make better sense)

Blurb:
Was one soul worth the lives of millions? The quandary was one that Rydell King had no choice but to face. No matter the answer, the truth remained—innocence was created to destroy him. She was beautiful…extinguishing her to save his people seemed impossible, and maybe it was. Mercy had never been crueler.

In this story, the author does such an amazing job with character development and them finally coming of age to fulfill a prophecy that has been on their back for centuries. And now the time has come to fulfill it.

This book gives an amazing lesson on how loved ones will literally do anything to protect you, because love is a very powerful thing.

One of the main characters, Raven, is destined for great and powerful things according to the prophecy.
Raven and her friends have to discover the details of the prophecy and what they all really are, because none of their family and friends are helping them to do so...

This book opens your eyes and tells you that the good can be bad, and the bad can be good.
Basically this book blurs the lines in between.

Wow, I just can't wait for te next book, because I was no AT ALL satisfied with that ending, YOUR CRUEL JAMIE!!! CRUEL!!! Now I have to wait a year to get the next one. Yaaaaaaay.

ARC provided by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

DNF at 41%

As beautiful as the writing is, sometimes the book felt mechanic and unexciting. Why? Well, I recently learned that this book ties in with a series and it's no wonder I'm at lost about what's going on. Next time, I'll be sure to do a little research before I jump into a book again.

The plot pulled me in but didn't impressed me as I actually started reading the book. Also, there's not particularly anything wrong with the characters. They're just not interesting. They act and talk like teenagers, but nothing about them stands out to me. I failed to connect to anyone.

A fascinating sister series that connects to the world of Web of Hearts and Soul with this story concentrating on the Dominarum Coven storyline and introducing those involved. I definitely recommend reading this book before the Edge sister series for they do share the same characters but this book describes what the main male lead King had been doing before his enthralling adventures with the ever dominate Reveca. I adore how the author concentrates on all the characters even those whom seem to be supporting ones and giving them their time and reasons for reaching this ever encroaching Rapture. The switching character points of views is always awesome and very appreciated.
This book centers around Raven and her family, a Wtichling uncovering shrouded memories while attempting to hold onto her bliss bubble of innocence for as long as possible. Raven's introduction is when she is a young teenage girl with her carefree spirit and positive outlook on life while falling in love for the first time with a mysterious admirer.
Rydell King, an addicting alpha male who goes on a mission to kill the one meant to destroy him and everything he is trying to accomplish when breaking from his Sovereign Revlin, instead finding his world rocked when meeting his intended target. The conflict King feels for his charge and the growing Faction he is creating is intriguing and valiant.
The danger and drama that follows this young couple and their budding romance is exciting and the secrets revealed about the family is epic, revealing just how powerful and influential the Dominarum Coven is and their belief in this rising Rapture that explains more of this elusive prophecy.

I almost felt like this was a traditional book, whose purpose was to introduce us to Raven. It did a great job of that and explaining her circumstances, but for me the rest of the plot was a little lacking when compared to other books in the series. Maybe it’s just that Mrs. Magee has set the par so high in the other installments that I was slightly disappointed with this one, however, if you’ve read the rest of the series you absolutely must continue.

I was given an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review. (and I'm kinda very late)

I'm going to try and do it in English sorry if some sentences are wrong, I'm French :)

So here we are embarking in New Orleans and its mystery in the life of Raven, her father Jamison and her family and friends. Raven is a bubbly girl who skates for her pleasure in total naivety but her father knows her a more complex future...

Well, Jamie is my favorite author so it's kind of difficult to find flaws in this book... However, I thought the beginning was kinda unsettling, it followed more Edge (which is NA) that the previous YA books in the series (maybe it's because the English was hard for me idk). And also, I found Raven kind of puerile for her age even if her emotion is Exaltation, sometimes it wasn't justified.

And now comes the cool things !! (which are going to be long)

First of all, what I really enjoyed was Raven's spirit. The story has several points of view and Raven's was, like I said before, bubbly ! She's Exaltation incarnate and she has an overflowing energy, which changes from the others "sisters" for whom the story begins quite darkly.

And, we got to discover right from the start the life and the secrets of the parents Jamison and Emery. Jamison and he's a protective father but not excessively : he understands perfectly his daughter because of their shared emotion, which makes their relationship very accomplice and tender.

We discover also Rydell's point of view, aka King in Edge, before he shows up with the Pentacle Sons of Reveca Beauregard. In the beginning he sees Raven as a threat while she ignores everything about her own fate and when , Rydell is totally shaken up and thinks he developed a fever for his enemy.

As the story goes, we see Rydell and Raven change together for the best while Jamison and Emery are working to train Raven and her friends to face their destiny. They are also bracing themselves to announce them how a real family they are...

I really appreciated reading the names of the other characters in the other books ! We hear about Vade & Glory, Charlie (father), Reveca, King (obviously), Cashton, Mason and even Indie ! We discover the links between the characters, Jamie Magee is impressive with her Web of Hears and Souls which is taking more and more sense in the course of the books.

We discover with Raven the abilities that her future offers her, even though we already know it through Jamison. I think Raven is the less prepared sister for now to become Queen of Exaltation. The scary twists and turns that arrived later for the other sisters show up in one go in Raven's life.

It's also the only book where the Queen is not with her King.

And the end of the book is spectacular !! Rydell's gesture, Dagen's friendship and all the last pages give to this book a special appeal, it's different from the others and we really feel that the story going forward and that Jamie is developing her writing, always for the best... ♥

The last word :
"No death can fight the pull of souls made of one."

HOLY CRAP I LOVE THIS BOOK!!! Basically you have these Kings of emotions like Exaltation, Anger, Obsession and so on. Rydell is like the second of the king of Exaltation and is known as the first. And there's this prophecy that a girl would have to kill him and some others before she could finally defeat the king of exaltation and become a rightful monarch. This new queen was supposed to have three protectors and that she would defeat the king with a lover from the Grave! On the night Raven is born, Rydell feels something that shakes him to the core and he drives straight to the source.

He enrolls at Raven's high school and starts flirting harmlessly with her because he doesn't know who she is. He doesn't know that they were destined to kill each other, And of course he falls for her. Raven has no clue of her witch origins of of the prophecy. But she does suspects her dad is something inhuman. After she kisses Rydell on a dare, things start to change for her. A protection that had been bestowed upon her was broken as so0n as their lips met!! Intrigued yet??

Beautifully written and the POV switched from Raven to Rydell and to Jamison (her dad). Her three protectors are her steps-sisters Ash and River, twins who love her unconditionally and finally one of her best friends Soren who's in love with Ash. I loved their bond!! I particularly liked Jamison's POV because this was the part where the mysteries emerged from so there were so many questions!! There was action since the king was hunting them Rydell down and planned to eliminate Raven before she gained strength. There's even dimension travelling!!!!!NO WAY CAN YOU GO WRONG WITH THIS BOOK!!

I cannot wait for more of this series oh and MAJOR CLIFFHANGER!!! I <3 Rydell and Raven and i hope they'll get their happy ending very soon! This was such a thrilling ride and definitely one of my FAVORITES!!!

This book is part of a series. For the first couple of pages, I was not able to really understand what the book was about. But when I did, oh my, is all I can say!!!

This is a book about the coming of age. Amazing love story….Basically how people do things, anything for love. The character development is good, even though it was a little complex because I hadn’t read any of her previous novels. But now I will!!!!

This is the story about Jamison BellaRose’s family, his daughter actually. Raven is destined for greatness. There is a prophecy to prove this.
Then there is a boy. Not just any boy, an upcoming king….and his name is Rydell. He is the second king of the Exaltation, though he is known as the first.
What happens when these two’s lives collide? How will this story end?

As soon as Raven is born, Rydell can feel it. When she is ready to go to school he goes to the same school. They are not meant to like each other and less to fall in love. What happens when these two kiss on a bet??? How will it all end!!!!
So I guess Rydell is in a very tough predicament. What is he to do? A young, beautiful girl will come to destroy him. What does that mean??? Will he battle her? Is the prophecy true? What will happen to his people? He is immortal, he is the king of the Exaltation emotion. He has to destroy this curse that has been put upon his people at whatever cost.

This book was definitely an eye opener. You learn that those that seem good can be bad and those that seem bad can be good. So, don’t let first impressions fool you.

Want to know what happens….read the book…The only thing I can say is…. I WILL BE READING THE NEXT ONE!!!! OMG!!!!

*The following text is an honest review. Thank you and please enjoy.*

Wha....? Huh… Bu…. *Fangirl crying in background* NOOOOO! Jamie Magee you are cruel. No book should have that much sway over what I feel. That’s just cruel… you made me feel things… I laughed, I cried, and most importantly I was enthralled by the story.

Jamie Magee portrays a powerful story about coming of age, and how loved ones will literally do anything to protect you, because love is a powerful thing. Raven BellaRose is destined for great and powerful things; a prophecy tells her so. Before you think oh it’s just a prophecy cliche in a book let me dismiss that myth. This book is so much more. No, Raven and her friends have to discover what no one dares to tell them; the good can be bad, and the bad can be good. Everything here is shades of grey with some pretty sketchy characters (Britain, I don’t know what you are up, but I don’t trust you.)

Oh my… words hardly manage to describe what this book did to me. Maybe this simile might work… My heart was played with how a child plays with their favorite toy; forever and always. Now the likeliness is I have to wait for the next book; an endeavor I will soon begin to resent. Jamie Magee please give the next book!

Rating: 5 out of 5. Like the Hunger Games… just so much better. Cait out

Amazing how this author writes her books and they intertwine beautifully. You can read this story as a stand alone, but I advise you read all of her series because you will get the true meaning for all these characters. From the beginning to the end, this story will have you glued to your seat until you finish the book. This story has everything you need to keep you entertained, action, romance, suspense, paranormal and heartbreak. You get into each characters mind and feel the emotions they go through. The love triangle that happens is unlike any other because the guy who isn't the real connected soul to Raven knows he will have to give her up once her soul mate finds her. Rydell still hangs in until the very end and protects her, when he was the one who was suppose to be who ended her. This story ends at the right place and it isn't a cliffhanger, but I really can't wait to see what comes next for all these incredible characters. Loved this story and every story that I have read by this author, which I have read most.

I loved this book as I have loved all of Jamie's books. This one was a little different from the See series and Insight series. It bridged the gap between the Web of Hearts and Souls series and her Edge series. So if you are reading the Edge books, you will definitely want to read this one. The characters are all in a state of growth and awakening. Some are trying to change their ways and become better beings, others are just awakening to who and what they really are. Mistakes are made and plots are twisted along the way. If you've read the Edge series you will be pulling your hair out knowing that some of the characters are headed in the wrong direction. I couldn't put the book down until I knew how it ended. Well done Jamie. I am on the edge of my seat waiting for the next installment. I was given an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review and this is it. I hate spoilers so I tried to keep it spoiler free.

ARC from the publisher for an honest review

For the first 20 or so percent I did not have a clue what was going on and who is who, so that really dampened the experience. Having since checked out a few other reviews it seems that it is part of the series - but the blurb did not say so.

The plot is complex, with many characters that you get to know and even more that are referenced and I was not sure where they fit in... The skating and racing passions did not grip me either - I felt they (skating in particular) were overplayed for what they were - a hobby that helps main characters relax.

I got into the book about half way through, as I thought Rydell's turnaround was very engaging, but it sort of sets the scene for the next book (?) while not giving the satisfying end to this one, for me at least.

2 stars, sorry, and I won't be reading other books in the series.

A truly gripping series

I was lucky enough to stumble upon Jamie's books, at the recommendation of another author I read. Boy am I glad I listened to her!! This series has been absolutely addicting!! So many characters to love and hurt for! The love, sacrifice, unity, and overall powerful emotions that are throughout these books is amazing! It's probably the best series I've ever read, you can't possibly get bored because there is always something going on!!

Raven and Rydell.. There is just so much to say about them!! Destined to die at the hands of raven, Rydell sets out to change that. Will raven be the one to change him?

I can not wait to read the next installment in this series! I love being caught in the web!

This is my new favorite in this series! I love these characters, I felt so attached to them and I wanted to keep reading. I was sad to find the book had come to an end. Raven and Rydell are fascinating to me and I want more! I can't wait for the next story with this group. This book could be read first in the series or 16th, but it will ultimately intertwine with the rest of the Web of Hearts and Souls books. There is a cameo or two from some of the other characters, but at this point in this story line you don't have to know who they are, it doesn't add anything to this story other than you saying, "oh that guy". Great book, buy it, read it, love it :)

This may be my favorite Jamie book so far. The characters are wonderful. I love how they have created their own family. Family is more than just blood. It is who you choose to surround yourself with. And this story illustrates that so well.
Jamie has a way of making you fall in love with the characters in her books. She makes you want to be a part of their world. I wish she could write faster so we didn't have to wait so long to find out what happens next! From the moment I started reading this book, I couldn't put it down. The story is so addicting! Read it now! :)

Amazing book. Although this book is different from the rest of the series it still fits in so perfectly. I instantly fell in love with the characters. I wanted to strangle some characters and others I wanted to hold to comfort. I felt every emotion possible while reading. It is well written and easy to read. Jamie did an amazing job writing this book and it gives us more information on some of the characters. It also helps to tie together the Insight series and the Edge series. 5 stars and highly recommended.

Holy Wow! This was such a great book! It was such a unique setup between the dark and dangerous Rydell and his unknowing assassin. Raven is just so fun-loving and innocent, but there are a ton of secrets surrounding her family that she is just beginning to find out about. The way the story unfolds will have you laughing and swooning as Rydell explodes into Raven’s simple little world. I loved this and absolutely can’t wait for another!!

I've been following all of Jamie's work for years now. In this book Jamie brings you the past of Jamison Bellarose. The coven leader to the Dominarian coven. It introduces you more in depth to his character. What kind of man he is. Also if you've followed or read Jamie's Edge series, it also shows you where King has been all this time. Very very good read! I couldn't put it down. Definitely recommend it.

Loved this book!!

I had just finished reading Edge episode 10 when I started this and it flowed nicely. Jamie finally gives us the background on King and what led him to where he is now in the Edge. If you haven't read the Edge episodes then I'd read them as soon as you finish this book. Everything will make perfect sense
