Linda Castillo is the author of the New York Times and USA Today bestselling Kate Burkholder mystery series, set in the world of the Amish. A Cry in the Dark was a reunion romance about a divorced couple who despite loving each other couldn't let go of their respective baggage stemming from childhood. The points in its favor, the hero Buzz is delicious, he loves Kelly still and guess what has been celibate for five years because no-one can be a substitute for her.

Buzz was abused as a child by his father who blamed him for everything and that combined with his working as a cop in child's division, cemented his decision not to be a father, because the world is cruel and he does not want to bring a child in it. After he is injured on the job, he takes a position with the Rocky Mountain search and rescue instead of a corporate job Kelly wanted so she walks away.

My problem in the book was Kelly and Kelly. She was a liar. She lost her father and brother in a crash, they were heroes as well and never dealt with even when Buzz tried to bring it up. She knew who he was when she married him and when she couldn't change him, left and on top of that never told him she had his baby, and had no intention of doing it until he goes missing and she needs his help.

I liked how she loved her son and was frantic about it but hated her hypocrisy. She has no problem using his skills and then derides him for it? She even acknowledges this fault of hers and knows she loves him but can't live seeing him die and her son hurt.

Buzz despite all of that loved her and she had no problems raising the same issues over and over again and suddenly she does a U-turn. I just hate annoying heroines I tell you. I wanted to really slug her.

An interesting and well-developed plot but I found too much repetition in how the main characters thought and felt. How many different ways can you think how much you care and doubt the other person's caring attitude? I just picked this book up from my bookshelf when I was looking for a paperback which I could take out by the pool without worrying about it getting damaged. I am not sure where or when I obtained it, and I have already passed it on to a sister. I would describe it as a great read for the beach, poolside or on that flight where you don't have to do much concentrating.

Entertaining

Lots of action as a search for a four year old occurs in the mountains with a forest fire coming from the north. Emotions are high as the search and rescue leader learns his ex had his son and didn't tell him 4years prior.. eLibrary book

Premise isn't too good. Why would I want to read about characters that bicker, are hysterically searching for lost 4 year old, and are in a fire. So had problems even finishing it.

In der Art des schreibens ist es doch etwas sehr schlicht gehalten. Die Auflösung hat sich bei mir schon recht frühzeitig angedeutet. Schade. Ich bin eigentlich ein großer Freund von Castillo.

This was one of Linda Castillo's earlier novels. Compared to her newest, it lacks the intensity of her later books. A lot of repetition. She has improved immensely in the ten years that this book was written.
