The Remnant Within explores a fascinating and unsettling premise: after a devastating accident leaves Ankanksha declared essentially brain dead, her grieving father turns to experimental and illegal scientific methods to bring her back. But what returns isn’t entirely her. Instead, her mind is rebuilt, intertwined with the consciousness of another, leaving two identities forced to coexist within one body. And inevitably, the question arises: who is really in control?
At its core, this is a story about grief, identity, and the consequences of trying to outrun loss. It raises compelling moral questions, like how far would you go to bring back someone you love? And if they return changed, are they still the person you lost?
The concept itself is strong and deeply philosophical, and there are moments where the story really shines - particularly toward the final stretch, where the tension and twists begin to unfold more rapidly. Those last sections bring a sense of urgency and conflict that the premise promises.
However, the execution didn’t fully deliver on that potential for me. The writing often leans heavily into over description, with characters’ thoughts and emotions explained in detail rather than shown. This leaves little room for the reader to interpret or sit with the deeper themes, which is a missed opportunity for a story that naturally invites reflection. Because of this, the reading experience feels more guided than immersive, making it better suited for those looking for an easier, more straightforward read rather than a deeply psychological one. Earlier sections could have benefitted from more subtlety and gradual tension building.
Overall, The Remnant Within offers an intriguing exploration of identity and the human cost of defying nature. While it may not fully satisfy readers looking for layered psychological depth, it will appeal to those who enjoy thought provoking concepts with ethical dilemma presented in an accessible way.

Beautiful story with a unique twist

Akanksha is a wealthy young woman left in a coma after a devastating car accident. When doctors determine the damage is too severe for her to recover, her father refuses to accept the outcome and turns to black market science in a desperate attempt to bring her back.
Beneath the scifi premise is a story about grief, guilt, and the secrets people carry. Nearly every character is fighting a battle below the surface, and those hidden struggles slowly shape who they become. The novel also spends time examining our complicated relationship with mortality and how far people are willing to go when faced with losing someone they love.
My biggest criticism is that I wanted more time with the characters themselves. Often I was told who they were rather than seeing it develop through their actions, choices, and desires. A deeper exploration of the cast would have made some of the emotional moments land even harder. I also occasionally found myself mixing up names, though that may simply have been me.

I definitely went into this book cold but I felt that made it more interesting.
A father who lost his daughter in an accident, but her body is still alive. He happens upon a scientist who may have a remedy to get the daughter back, but no guarantees. Only hope, which this father had barely been clinging to for quite a while.
The scientist has higher-ups who ultimately cannot endorse this avenue of his work, it's illegal. But....has it already been done before? Can it truly work?
The psychological patterns of humans, choices we make and why, also the ramifications of those choices, all are present and mixed into this story. Also, the possibility of scientific growth beyond current understanding and the moral issues that can present.
This was a good read, especially if you enjoy twists and turns along with a study in humanity and relationships. MK J surprised me with a couple twists I didn't see coming.

📚I absolutely loved this book! It was beautifully written with complex characters, and really made my brain work in the best way! Between the suspense and the crossing of ethically grey/morally ehh lines- I could NOT put it down.
📚I honestly enjoyed all the characters! They were all so complex. The good. The bad. The ugly. The curiosity that leads people to want to "play God"
📚There was spice when the plot called for spice. It added to the story, to the complexity of the characters vs being used as purely smut-which I enjoyed! Its one I can read at the airport and not have to worry about if someone is reading over my shoulder!
📚The whole concept is insane *in a good way* and when the words "THE END" came I did not know how to feel. I liked the way it ended but i had SO MANY DIFFERENT THEORIES ON WHAT WOULDVE COME NEXT AHHH! All in all- 10/10 recommend!

The author actually reached out to me to read and review this book, and I have to admit it’s not the kind of thriller I usually gravitate toward—but I’m really glad I said yes.
From the very first chapter, I was completely hooked. I found myself immediately invested in the story and eager to uncover what would happen next.
The plot centers on a daughter who is involved in a serious accident, suffers major brain damage, and undergoes surgery—only to come back changed in unexpected ways. Even more intriguing, she begins to have memories of being someone else entirely. And that’s just the beginning—there are twists throughout that I won’t spoil, but they definitely kept me guessing.
What makes this story stand out is how it blends suspense with deep emotional layers and just the right touch of scientific detail. It creates a reading experience that is both thought-provoking and hard to put down.
Overall, this was a compelling and memorable read that I’d definitely recommend.

This has a frankenstein under tone. A father who wanted to save his daughter after a severe car crash. Contacted a disgraced neuroscientist to help him bring her back.
This is a medical/science fiction thriller who delves deep into the emotional bounds of guilt, suffering with the feeling of who you are beneath the surface.
That one small detail I predicted.
I felt it was well written it keeps you reading to see how the story unfolds. How all parties deal with their decisions, grief, anger, dealing with the past, and surviving the consequences.
The characters were well fleshed out.
I felt the climax was a bit underwhelming.
The concept was excellent.
If you like sc-fi thrillers and are looking for a quick light read: I recommend giving this one a try.

This story was written so carefully and precise that i felt it to be believeable and kinda eerie. From the very first chapter I was hooked, it is engaging with short chapters that keep you reading on for more. The plot was very unique and gave me frankenstein vibes but instead of making a new body, this author made it so they construct a young girls mind. Which was fascinating by the way, I understood the medical references and found that they did not take away from the story at all for me but added depth and important information to the plot. Overall, this book was a very thought provoking and memorable read. Highly recommend.

This book is super interesting. Many themes across this novel.
For the main part, the plot was super interesting. I loved the concept of death being beyond the body decaying. Very enlightening. The plot twist was a big shock and well written.
I only wish to have gained more insight on the friends. I would have loved to know more on what happened to Shefali, as she was as borderline also a main character. Also more backstory on Rohit.
Other than that, I would highly recommend this novel. Super interesting and I can envision this becoming a classic.

This was one of those books I only set down to think about what I just read. MKJ explores the darker side of human nature and the consequences whether intended or unintended. I thought I knew the plot twist and was wrong. Definitely a good one to pick up as your next read.

Just finished reading this book, and honestly, it was such an interesting read. The beginning instantly grabbed my attention, especially the scientific concepts and mystery surrounding the story. The author explained everything in a way that kept me curious from the very first page.
The story follows a girl who meets with an accident, and after recovering, she no longer seems like the same person. Her father tries everything possible to save her, and that emotional connection made the story even more engaging.
After crossing around 200 pages, I genuinely couldn’t stop reading because I wanted to know the truth behind everything. The suspense, emotions, and science-based elements blended really well together.
Overall, it was a gripping and unique story that kept me hooked till the end.

As someone who lost his mother recently, I’ve often questioned what-if and if-only scenarios, so this hit particularly home for me. In this novel, Akanksha survives a brutal car crash but her brain is too damaged. Unwilling to accept the circumstances, her rich father reaches out to a disgraced neuroscientist who agrees to reconstruct her brain on the premise that consciousness is a pattern that can be mapped and transferred.
But … If we transfer a mind, is the transfer the same person? Or is it a copy wearing the original's memories, a version coherent enough to be mistaken for it? How far would you go to hold onto the ones you love? Would you salvage what remains when the circumstances are dire?
I particularly enjoyed how this book made me contemplate on where I personally stood between pushing the limits of science and what constitutes appropriate moral boundaries that keep our humanity intact. I also loved how character-driven this book was, as we got to understand the inner battles each on faced as they grappled with current and past problems.
If you enjoy psychological thrillers that make you question concepts of morality in the face of scientific breakthroughs, or want a quick read into medical science fiction, this book is for you. It was perhaps one of the shortest reads I’ve come across, and the brain science is comprehensive enough not to deter from the characters or the overall plot.

MKJ creates a world where the past is never truly forgotten, and every revelation seems to raise even more questions. While the plot certainly kept me engaged, it was the characters and their emotional journeys that made me want to keep turning the pages.
One of the things I appreciated most was how imperfect the characters are. They don't always make the right decisions, and they often have to wrestle with fear, doubt, and the consequences of choices that can't be undone. That vulnerability made them feel believable and gave me plenty of reasons to root for them. Their growth isn't immediate or easy, which makes every step forward feel well earned.
The relationships throughout the story are layered with tension, loyalty, and uncertainty. Trust doesn't come easily, and that creates some of the book's strongest moments. I enjoyed watching the characters slowly learn who they could depend on while also confronting parts of themselves they had been trying to avoid. The world itself is filled with mystery, and I liked that the story didn't rush to explain everything. Instead, it allows readers to uncover its secrets alongside the characters, making each discovery feel rewarding. The atmosphere carries an underlying sense of danger that lingers throughout the book, creating suspense even during the quieter moments.
I also enjoyed the balance between action and introspection. There are plenty of high-stakes moments that move the plot forward, but the story always finds its way back to the emotional impact those events have on the characters. That balance helped keep the narrative grounded and made the bigger moments feel even more meaningful.

The Remnant Within by MKJ is an emotional suspense novel I didn’t want to put down. Akanksha is a young woman whose mother has recently died, and she is filled with grief and sadness. She is a college student, and one night, a friend (Shefali) convinces her to go to a big party. She drinks too much and drives while intoxicated after the party with Shefali. Akanksha enjoys pushing boundaries; it makes her feel alive. Unfortunately, there is an accident, and Akanksha is gravely injured, with brain injuries. Akanksha’s only remaining family, her father, will do anything to save her, even seeking out scientists who could perform morally questionable brain procedures. Her father proceeds with the experimental options, but will Akanksha come back the same daughter she was before the procedures?
This was a really interesting and different book. I was intrigued from the beginning, and finished it in less than a day. It’s always fun to read about science and morality. Everyone has different opinions about what is right and what is wrong. The characters were interesting, but I wish they had been developed a little bit more. Also, it would've been nice to have more backstory on what happened between Akanksha and her parents. That said, I felt the issue of how a parent deals with something happening to their child was handled with honesty. There is suspense in the story, but it’s blended with many emotional layers and characters grappling with inner turmoil. It’s a compelling read, and one I recommend! First I want to say thank you MKJ for reaching out to me to invite me to check on your book. It was unexpected but greatly appreciated.
Now talking about the book, this is not what I was expecting at all. I expected a story more focus on the sci-fi part but I got surprised by all the details beneath it. This is a story that addressed grief, guilt and the secrets people carry with them in life after a mayor traumatic event and their decisions. It is also a story that questions why? It questions mortality, it questions ethics and morality, it questions what should be considered wrong or right, and also questions how far someone is willing to go for a loved one, to get what they want and what they had already lost even when it comes from the wrong place.
All the characters struggled with different things during the story. Loss, guilt, pain, loneliness, regrets and all of it makes them who they are, in reality it was a little frustrating for me not to watch them develop on their own, I feel most of the time we were told how they felt or who they were instead of being allowed to discover it by their actions and behaviors.

I went into this book blind for the most part and I generally think that makes reading more enjoyable for me. I genuinely loved this story and all the themes explored in it. It was eerie, it was deep, and it was really well thought-out.
The story itself felt so original; one that took a turn I wasn’t expecting, but thoroughly enjoyed. It’s always funny to read a book where I’m split between loving half the characters and hating the other half. Anand and friends made me genuinely angry whereas Akki and her family/friends had my heart breaking for them.
I definitely went through a rollercoaster ride of emotions reading this. Akki’s ending was very fitting, although my desire for a happy ending would have loved to have her find herself again.
The writing style was one I don’t think I’ve ever encountered before. I think it was the most descriptive writing I’ve ever come across. In a lot of ways, I appreciate that, because it allowed me to know exactly how each character was feeling/thinking and it set the scenes very clearly, however, the descriptions felt repetitive with how they were structured. It didn’t take away from my enjoyment of the story, it’s just something I became increasingly aware of as I read~

Halfway through and my first impressions were that the descriptive writing was beautiful. At times I felt like it was saying a lot of the same thing, but in different ways. I absolutely adored this dark psychological thriller/sci-fi. Akanksha suffers a TBI in a car accident and is in a comas her father, deep in his own personal grief, is desperate to get her back by any means necessary. He contacts a disgraced neuroscientist named Dr Ayer who is able to bring Akanksha’s brain activity back…to life? Whose life?! She feels the rightness of her body and some memory, but she also feels like it doesn’t belong to her. Was it recreation or creation? The twist of the story was good and one I wasn’t expecting. I also loved how each character was fighting their own secondary battles that no one else is really privy to. This book begs the deep question of what you would do—or would not do for love. Not my usual read but I’m so glad that I gave it a chance! Thank you to the author MKJ for sending me a copy in exchange for an honest review. Looking forward to seeing what this author puts out next!

Thank you MKJ for gifting me this book to read. I truly enjoyed reading it. It’s a poignant thought-provoking story about a young lady who suffers from brain damage from a devastating car accident, and the lengths a father will go to for his child. As she lays comatose, her father convinces a scientist to illegally perform medical/scientific treatments to bring her back. But he’s told that the person she will be if/when she comes back, will not be the same daughter that he knew before. It explores some ethical and moral questions as well as elements of guilt, past psychological trauma, death, grief, desperation, identity loss, suicidal thoughts, and pain. But underneath it all there was hope. It’s an emotional read and I enjoyed the medical and scientific portions and how the back story developed along the way. There were some twists towards the end that I didn’t see coming. I would have liked to have seen more development between the father and daughter. In that sense I felt that the ending was a little abrupt. But overall a fascinating and thought-provoking story which I enjoyed and read in a day.

The premise immediately intrigued me. At first I felt like the story moved at a slower pace, but by the middle of the book, I was invested. While I could predict some parts of the story while reading, there were still moments that caught me by surprise.
While the neuroscience concepts and medical terminology form an integral part of the story, what stood out to me was its exploration of human nature. Love, ambition, selfishness, greed and the desire to win all shape the decisions we make. It also made me reflect on how a single choice can change the course of many lives, and how we often don’t realize the cost until much later.
It may not have completely surprised me, but it gave me plenty to think about. Every choice carries consequences and the human mind can be far more unpredictable than we expect.

Overall, I thought this was a great premise with plenty of twists and turns to keep one guessing. The themes of grief and guilt were strong throughout the story. This isn’t usually my kind of read but when MKJ approached me with the request if I would read it I figured why not especially when I was going through a bit of a reading slump. The Remnant Within is an engaging and suspenseful story that kept me interested from beginning to end. MKJ does a great job of building mystery while exploring themes like identity, choices, and redemption.
The characters are believable, and the plot has enough twists to keep you guessing without becoming confusing. The writing is easy to follow and creates a strong sense of suspense throughout the book.
If you enjoy psychological thrillers with a bit of mystery and emotional depth, this is a book worth reading. Overall, The Remnant Within is an enjoyable read that leaves you thinking after you finish the last page. I rate it 4.5 stars and highly recommend it.

This dark psychological thriller grabbed my attention from the very first pages. I loved the creepy atmosphere and the feeling that something was always hiding beneath the surface. The author did a great job of keeping me curious and making me want to discover what was really going on.
The middle part was a little difficult for me because there were a lot of scientific details, which slowed down the pace. I had to push myself a little to keep going, but I’m glad I did.
Around 60% into the story, the story pulled me in again. The tension started building and I couldn’t put the book down because I needed answers. The ending completely surprised me. I didn't see the plot twist coming.
A dark, intriguing thriller with a unique concept, a few slower moments, but a finale that definitely made an impact.

it was a quick read, only took me a few hours to get through it. after reading, i have to say that it just was not my kind of book. i typically would have DNF’d, but stuck with it since the author personally reached out to ask me for a read/review.
i felt that the characters lacked a lot of depth. i was not attached to them at all, and it was honestly kind of confusing to keep track of them all. it seemed like a lot of the characters were unnecessary to the story. speaking of unnecessary, the gratuitous sex scenes made absolutely no sense to me and did nothing to help the story along.
i think it was an interesting idea, and maybe with some more editing and fleshing out characters/main ideas, it could be a lot better. i know most of this review is pretty negative, but i will say that i highlighted a couple quotes that were good. and the book did pick up more around 70% of the way through, but then just completely fell flat in the ending.

Imagine taking multiple people and implanting their thoughts, secrets and actions stories into one person. Beyond the science and secrets at the core of this story it almost felt like reading about a person trapped in their own mind going through a mental health crisis trying to make sense of everything happening in their body and wanting it all to end at times. I say that because we have a girl who has been in a coma, brain dead from a car wreck until her father comes across a scientist who claims he can bring her back but with no guarantees as the outcome.
While he is successful at bringing her back she isn’t the same person as before. She has been brought back with not only her subconscious, life experiences and secrets but multiple other peoples as well.
As she explores each “blurb” so to speak all these memories start to take shape and unfold and everybody involved in this process, from her father down to the scientists and her friends has some deeply dark emotional secrets that come to light.

Set in Delhi, I also loved experiencing the cultural references, names, and food, it gave the story a fresh perspective that I don't often read.
I'll admit the middle of the book was a bit slow moving for me, but once the twists started, my brain was shook. This is definitely a plot-driven story, with plenty of surprises that kept me guessing.
