Lady Melisandre Vane has spent her life learning how to be human.
In a rigid aristocratic society, she performs perfection, measured smiles, careful words, flawless composure. But when her family’s sudden rise in status draws her into the heart of high society, something begins to fracture.
People react to her in ways they cannot explain. Some are drawn in. Others feel a quiet, instinctive fear. What she is has no name in any book she has studied. And in a world that runs on divine energy she cannot feel, simply existing is already a kind of treason.
As political tensions rise and strange disturbances spread across the kingdom, suspicion turns toward House Vane and toward Melisandre herself.
She has always known how to perform being human. She is no longer certain that is enough
A wonderful blend of rigorous physics and fantasy!
ARC provided by the publisher for an honest review. If you're tired of vague mysticism and want a magic system that behaves like actual, measurable science, Cecee Paul absolutely DELIVERS.
The worldbuilding is phenomenal. I loved the sociopolitical clash between empirical data and institutional dogma - specifically how the Holy Faction weaponizes natural "Divinity" levels to justify their authority.
The character concepts are also INSANELY visually striking and practically BEG to be drawn. Melisandre’s "hollow" condition acts as a vacuum that draws in thermal energy, forcing her to constantly wear layered clothing and drink warming teas just to manage the localized cold she creates.
Contrast her with Genevieve - a witch who deliberately emptied her own natural energy and can now see the incorporeal ghosts of those denied the kingdom's death rite - and you have a really fascinating cast.
A beautifully structured, highly analytical approach to fantasy + world building. Highly recommend!
