The sole survivor of an alien massacre that destroyed her entire family, a vengeful Andrea Flores leaves Earth for the harsh planet Jod, where she joins the Tenebrea, a fierce and mysterious cadre of elite warriors that holds the key to the universe's survival--and to Andrea's ultimate vengeance on her family's killers. Original.
Edit: Bumping it up from 4 to 5 stars after re-reading the book. I decided to re-read it because I never did continue the trilogy. And I wanted to remember the story properly. This book is nothing short of amazing! It has all the sci-fi elements I like. I was impressed by how well the other species were described. You get info on their history, technology, culture and social structure. You also get spaceships, clones, survival drills, action, some drama, lots of questions on ethics... It's a very good, well-written story with interesting elements, some of which reminded me of Battlestar Galactica, The Matrix and Star Trek. I couldn't recommend it enough to die-hard sci-fi fans.

Sure, I only heard about this book because I'm a ST fan, but you don't need to be a Trekker to enjoy it.
- This is a good, well-written story, which uses rich vocabulary and contains an organized structure. - The plot is very interesting. On the one hand, you get fast-paced action. On the other, detailed description of alien species and their technologies, histories and cultures. - The book was (co-)written by a woman, and the main character is a woman. How often do we get that from the sci-fi genre?. - It has explosions and fights and FTL, yes, but it also goes deeper, touching on questions of ethics, honor and loss.
So, to conclude, no, it's not your basic, two-dimensional sci-fi novel. And I'll certainly be reading the rest of the trilogy.
Hands down, this is one of if not the best science fiction book that I have read all year. The story is gripping and compelling, and the protagonists raw emotions are so vivid that you start to feel her pain. You will not regret reading this book.
Is being by Roxann Dawson enough to get me to read a book? Well, that and having mostly good reviews are enough to make me want to read at least the first book in the trilogy.
(And yes, I have been watching ST: Voyager on Netflix. However did you guess? ;) )
But it's not enough to get me to read the rest of the trilogy. Too much in this book didn't make sense in too many ways (lacking internal consistency, consistency with known laws of physics, and more).
Too bad, really. The premise had a lot of promise, and there were certainly some interesting bits. But overall, not an enjoyable read.
I am so far, loving the story. Partly because it is an enjoyable & in depth storyline & partly because, although alien in subject matter, it isn't so far from reality that it couldn't be imagined as a possible future. I have also missed not having any "new" Star Trek stories (as a huge fan) and Roxann brings just enough of her "Voyager" experience into this story that it has a comfortable & familiar feel to it. Not Star Trek but definitely a distant cousin.
Hard to get into, but once you do it's impossible to put down. Five species trying to live together in space, clones, mystery, cool technology... I am ready for book two!
