Willing to Endure

Rate this book
A RELUCTANT VILLAIN FIGHTS A DARK GOD

On a quest for vengeance, a warrior travels beyond the reach of kings and emperors, but the demons of the Nine Hells are impossible to escape. New armies march to war, and new horrors hide at the edges of the world.

Seeking a heroic death, Tyrus of Kelnor wanders a strange land, teeming with barbarians, giants, and animal men. With his unnatural fighting skills he earns new infamy among men and monsters alike, but his plans for vengeance falter as he struggles to find a home. He dreams of a little girl who needs help and discovers old horrors from before the Age of Chaos. The barbarians worship a dark god who has his own plans for revenge.

WILLING TO ENDURE is the third book in a dark fantasy series from author Burke Fitzpatrick. Filled with demonic sorcery, brutal battles, and monstrous beasts of war, Shedim Rebellion reinvents errant knights and dark sorcerers but also asks serious questions about the seduction of evil and the struggle for redemption.

This is excellent grim dark fantasy

A handful of strong characters fleshed out. Strong world building and fast paced action. Far better than a lot of fantasy out there that tries to compare itself to Abercrombie or Martin. Highly recommend you start with book one.

Dark Fantasy and Rabbinical Mysticism, peppered with Mesopotamian flavors...Dig?

I am admittedly a newbie to the Dark Fantasy genre, but I'm quite familiar with whatever type of fantasy Tolkien is considered. Having said that, I've binge read this entire series, and can't seem to get enough. Starting with the first book, Today is Too Late, through Out of the Grave, and on to the third installment, Willing to Endure, Fitzpatrick writes compelling characters, and weaves a complex story line, all while introducing us to Avinor, the Middle World, which he has formed around, from what I can tell, Rabbinical Mysticism and Mesopotamian demonology, all placed on a Dantean landscape. This world includes some recognizable entities, such as Angels, both fallen and not, Demons, and the like, along with some of Fitzpatrick's own inventions. the mechanisms he employs to create "Heros" for this series, namely the main character, Tyrus, is inventive, and unique, in my experience as a fantasy reader.

All in all, I'd highly recommend this book if you are a reader of fantasy of any type. The struggles of Tyrus, is the struggle of us all, in that knowing what to do, and who to trust, is sometimes difficult. Well done Burke.

The battle continues...

His anger had grown with the Blight. The broken bodies of his enemies filled his dreams. Dura, Tyrus, Mulciber, elves, dwarves, shedim, and seraphim - he would murder them all. Thinking of it made him gnash his teeth.

I received a preview copy from the author for free, as invited to do so in the back of the previous book in the series, Out of the Grave. Somehow, I thought this was going to be a trilogy, probably because fantasy series used to be so, more often than not. I'm happy that there is more to come. I don't care how many books there are.

I thought Willing to Endure began a little slower than the others, and I hoped it wasn't losing momentum. But no, I need not have worried, it picked up pace pretty soon and flowed beautifully to the end of the estimated 452 pages. Again, Burke Fitzpatrick tells a story that leaves you satisfied with a completed storyline. You are not left hanging on the edge of a cliff.

So, this time around, I saw the young Princess use her impressive powers and take her thinking levels up a notch. The child is coming into her own. I no longer felt sorry for her horrible father. Serves him right for upsetting the wicked angel. Again, our hero - Tyrus of Kelnor - proves his worth as a champion. He gets himself an army, just as he set out to do at the end of Book 2, but I can't tell you how, or who, or what he does with it. You will have to find out for yourself.

And the next stage in this Shedim rebellion? Book 4 can't come soon enough for me.

This is a very good 3rd book in the series, The Shedim Rebellion. There is everything you want in a high fantasy series. Angels, demons, monsters, elves, sorcerers, and humans and they are all fighting for power of both good and evil. Sometimes it is difficult to tell the good guys from the bad guys.

Plotting, character development and growth, and story pacing are all well done. The story held my interest pretty much from the first to the last page and at the end I wanted more and for me, that is the best accomplishment for a book series, wanting more.

I don't nitpick a book apart to find fault with a book. I am not a writer and I have no business telling writers how to write their books and I despise long winded, "holier than thou" reviewers who enjoy doing so. My requirements in a fantasy book or series are simply interesting plot and characters. If it holds my interest and I care about the characters and if it makes me want more of the same, then it is a good book.

This is a good book and a good series thus far. This self-published author deserves more attention.

The tale of the Shedim Rebellion continues to grow both more epic and more bloody as it goes, as Book 3 finds our nigh-immortal hero Tyrus in a desolate wasteland, pursued by demons and strange were-beasts called purim, and haunted by his failures. He heads into the Proving Grounds to try and assemble an army of barbarians, a task that no one, not even the seraphim, believe he will succeed at.

Meanwhile, the Demon Emperor Azmon hides behind his walls and his army of undead beasts, culling any who dare to oppose him in his own court. The siege has begun, and both sides play a waiting game, knowing that when the stalemate finally ends, the Third War of Creation will begin. There will not be a fourth ...

As an aspiring self-published author myself, I wish Burke the best of luck on his journey, and most definitely look forward to the conclusion of this series.

Best of the series so far. Loved that Tyrus reunited with Marah and loved her growth both as a person and in power. It will be interesting to see what happens in the future novels and how it will all transpire. I'm confused about something, it was said in the second novel that Ishma would go to the Seven Heavens upon her death, and that Mulciber won't kill her just take her to Nine Hells alive, but Tyrus and everyone acts as if she's dead. I have suspicions though that she's still alive despite the 4 years since Mulciber took her. Guess I'll have to wait and see, I would very much like to see Tyrus reunite with her, I'm a sucker for a romantic story... Empress and her loyal guardian in love but unable to be together.
Looking forward to the fourth part of this series.

What a great third instalment of this series. Willing to Endure continues this great saga and Burke Fitzpatrick develops his characters even more. His story and characters are compelling and I even felt sympathy for Azmon as you can see how he has become corrupted in increments while trying to save his people from a greater evil. That the characters are neither good nor evil but are struggling to do their best is what I think resonates with me the most and pulls me into the story so completely. I look forward to the next book in this series.

I won this novel in a goodreads drawing.

This third book in the series starts with Tyrus wandering around the badlands pointlessly killing monsters. Eventually, he is found by barbarians and joins them, finding a family along the way.

Meanwhile, Azmon turns into a demon and builds bonebeasts in his deserted empire, and Marah grows into a powerful sorceress.

Then Tyrus comes back...

More minor characters come into the spotlight for some interesting developments, although I hoped we'd see more of Klay, The Ranger.

Good stuff, this is developing into an excellent series.

Wow what a great read. If you like fantasy at all you will love these 3 books. I am not a writer so I cant write 14 paragraphs on the pros and cons and dissect the authors failures or triumphs. Again, simple review is read these books and I will definitely be adding them to my favorites shelf.
