Hittin' the Right Note

Rate this book
Pretty boy meets good ole boy in this spicy LGBTQ+ romance about music, Appalachia, and the promise of second chances.

Luke Carter was once one of the biggest names in country music, until a very public outing led him to swear off music altogether and go back home to West Virginia. When he’s asked to perform a benefit concert for the arts center that gave him his start, however, he can’t say no, even if that means teaming up with Mikey Smiles, the pretty boy who broke his heart when they were teenagers.

Mikey Smiles has it all. He’s gone from being part of the boy band the Heartthrobs to being a successful solo act and, having come out as pansexual, he can now live an authentic life. However, he’s never been able to forget the good ole boy Luke Carter, the one who got away.

As the two men begin their collaboration, they soon rediscover their feelings for one another. Together, they’ll finally hit the right note, even as a secret from the past threatens to drive them apart forever.

This is probably the best book I've read all year. The story is pretty basic. Two teens fall in love during music camp. They drift apart only to reunite years later. Both made it pretty big. One came out as pansexual, Mikey, and the other, Luke, was outed against his will and lost his career. They're reunited for a charity concert for the organization that ran the music camp.

Luke had moved back to his home area in the northern panhandle of West Virginia after his outing. A tabloid had gotten a picture of him kissing another man causing him to lose his career. The woman who runs the charity asked Luke if he would consider performing with Mikey to raise funds. Without these funds, the charity would go under. Luke agreed.

Mikey was appearing on a talk show promoting his new book in which he came out. The host asks him about the charity event. This is the first he had heard of it. His assistants hadn't told him before the host sprung it on him.

We get a happy ending, but not without some bumps along the way. There are a few twists I didn't see coming, but it was all good.

The best part about the book is how the author incorporates the locations as part of the story. He's so good at this. His first book did it as well. This sounds cheesy but he really transports the reader to the location. I know the area where the book is set and he captured it perfectly. The location is the third main character.

I highly recommend this book. It's just so well written. It's an easy read with some spicy times. It's just really really good.

cute

I’m a sucker for stories about musicians! I enjoyed Luke and Mikey’s relationship journey both from the past and in the present! Sweet, spicy, with plenty of charm! Love a good second chance romance!
