Lauren Lee Merewether has officially stolen my heart yet again.

As someone who fell in love with Warrior King and remains absolutely obsessed with her Ancient Egyptian books, I honestly never thought I'd be this excited to leave Waset behind for stone keeps, Norman knights, and the wild borderlands inspired by the Welsh Marches. And yes, I'm still impatiently waiting for the next Greek mythology book because The Curse of Beauty remains one of my all-time favorites—but after reading The Thornwyck Rose, I can confidently say Lauren was born to write medieval romance.

And no, this isn't enemies-to-lovers. Thank goodness. I am so sick of enemies-to-lovers.

Instead, this book gives us something far more painful and beautiful: two wounded souls trapped by loyalty, grief, and impossible circumstances... in a very sweet and clean romance despite the violent setting, which is very typical of these books, but there is a content warning at the beginning of the book, and it's really not that much compared to like Kathleen Woodiwiss' Wolf and the Dove, which had alot.

Seren is not a fiery modern heroine who wins by sarcasm. She is brave, compassionate, deeply faithful, and willing to sacrifice herself for her people. Watching her enter Thornwyck Keep, knowing she may be walking to her death, absolutely shattered me.

And then there's Payen de Montfort, whose real name is Erik! Not a spoiler, it's in the blurb.

Oh, Mr. Erik.

This man belongs in the Hall of Legendary Tortured Heroes alongside all of Lauren's MMCs!

A warrior stripped of his homeland, his faith, and even his name. A man living under the shadow of a cruel lord for the sake of his son. A giant Viking-turned-Norman knight who carries grief like armor and looks at the heroine with so much sorrow and restraint that I wanted to scream at the pages.

Lauren writes yearning better than almost anyone I have read, and it's such a shame her books have so little exposure.

If you love heroes who suffer in silence, protect everyone but themselves, and are absolutely convinced they don't deserve happiness, prepare yourself.

The atmosphere is incredible. Thornwyck Keep feels almost Gothic, haunted by the memory of four vanished wives and secrets buried beneath stone walls. There is danger, political intrigue, faith, duty, and enough emotional tension to make me ache.

And can we please talk about how refreshing it is to read a romance where the leads don't spend half the book hating each other? Seren and Payen recognize each other's pain almost immediately, and the connection that grows between them feels tender, tragic, and utterly forbidden.

Fans of Juliet Marillier, Alice Coldbreath, Carrie Cotton, and Diana Gabaldon need this book.

Ms. Merewether has already proven she can transport readers to Ancient Egypt and Bronze Age Greece, but now she's given us knights, castles, Vikings, and forbidden love—and I am completely here for it.

Now, please excuse me while I continue waiting for more Egypt, more Greece, and every single book Lauren wants to write in medieval times or across any age!

Because apparently she can do all of them.

This book has a realness that can be frustrating but in a way that adds to the experience. The events take place over decades, and it feels like it. The slow burn is well paced in reading it, skipping years but still making their weight known. As such, it brews a tension in the reader as the characters never give up hope but endure. The author is very good at feeling when the reader might be at their limit for tolerating the characters tolerance, giving reasons and reminders of why they can't just kill the enemy from different perspectives so it doesn't get to repetitive and you don't have the annoyance of, "sure, he can't kill them, but why not her or that guy?". It can be aggravating but realistic in its approach. It also understands that there are different forms of strength very well.

That said, there is one section that kinda drags. Semi-spoiler as I won't give much detail (skip to the next paragraph if you want), but after the main conflict is dealt with, there is another that arise that seems like maybe it's the set up for the next book but it is not and is settled without the characters actually being responsible for it, leading into a third, very short conflict that then gives a different avenue that allows for the next book but feels finished in this one and wasn't really necessary. Both conflicts could have been cut out and perhaps the third one could have been moved to the beginning of the next book in a way that allowed the character that is the solution to have agency in it.

That is the other complaint I have with this particular story is despite the female lead being well developed and having strength of character that fits well within the historical setting, her daughters get almost no development. At one point in the story, it remembers to assign them each a sentence of personality, but that's it. It may be remedied in future books as the description of the next book at the end of this one mentions it will concern the marriage of the eldest, but from that description it seems Seren will still be our lead so it will not be her story alone.

This is a heart-wrenchingly beautiful story. It can be heavy reading at times because of the violence and darkness depicted; however (just as the author warns at the beginning) abuse is never glorified, and these subjects are portrayed with as much compassion as possible while still being realistic. We follow Seren and General Montfort through decades of survival after she is given as a bride to Henry de Thornwyck to ensure peace between the Welsh and the Crownlands.

About Seren, I can only say: what a woman. Her endurance, her love, her intelligence, and her kindness make her a truly inspiring character. And Montfort… His protective and caring nature, his respect, and his admiration—I would say he is one of the most devoted and well-crafted characters I've ever encountered. Their circumstances make their love impossible, forbidden, wrong, and dangerous, but their connection is achingly sweet. I was rooting not only for their love but for their lives the entire time.

If there's something I've never really been a fan of in books and movies, it's time jumps. This book has got its fair share of those 😅, which at the time frustrated me. However, after a certain point, I couldn't see this story developing in any other way, and I came to love even that aspect of it. I loved the writing style, the metaphors, the pacing, and the cohesion that pushes the story forward. All of it is beautiful and deep. The development of the relationships and characters was managed impeccably; you can't help but feel for them… Except maybe Henry, though you can see where everything went wrong with him.

I wish I could say more, but I find myself at a loss for words to accurately present this book to you. It's one of those things you need to experience yourself to fully get. Just remember to be mindful of any triggering topics that might apply to you.

If I could describe this book with one word it would be exceptional. It is a historical medieval romance with fantastic elements. I must admit that I thoroughly enjoyed my time with this book. I really appreciated that the book was true to the historical period it was set. Both characters are very interesting and likeable without being overdone. I like that the FMC is not the typical FMC we usually encounter in these books. You know the fierce, "not like other girls" type. While very intelligent, this FMC is both soft and compassionate as well as brave and courageous. The MMC is selfless, kind, brave and honourable. My favourite part was the romance between these two. Fortunately, this book avoided two things that are in almost every romance book these days: enemies-to-lovers and spice. Enemies to lovers used to be one of my favourite tropes but it is so overdone and usually poorly executed that I simply can't be bothered with it anymore. Likewise, too much spice can take away from the deep connection formed between the characters. This being closed door gives the author the opportunity to perfect the tension and the yearning which are the best part of any romance novel. I really can't say anymore without veering into spoiler territory. All I can advice anyone wondering about what to do regarding this novel, is go read it as soon as possible! It is my understanding that it is being published very soon. So go running! You won't regret it!

The moment Serene becomes the Lady de Thornwyck, everything changes for Comander de Montfort and for the people: she brings light, food, peace, mercy and the word of God in a dark place where only fear existed. She brings love for Ragnar, the Comander's little orfan boy and for the people that,in time, come to cherish her presence. For her, Erik Bjornsson,Comander Payen de Montfort becomes a friend,a protective shadow, and the man that she will forever love.
Serene is a symbol of resilience in front of her husband's violence, and she saves herself through her education, her faith in God, and her ability to understand people.

I loved The Thornwyck Rose.

This is a historical fantasy medieval romance, which is also closed-door, that is filled with emotional longing, impossible choices, quiet challenges, and dangerous wanting. Before reading, I also appreciated warnings that were provided as the story contains elements of violence, death, and abuse.

Our FMC, Serene, is a clever, resilient, and quick-witted heroine. She leaves her home, understanding the reality of her circumstances, and knowing that everything she loves can be taken from her. Yet, despite knowing this, she continues to face each challenge and trial ahead of her with courage, compassion, bravery, and faith.

Our MMC, Erik, also known as Payen de Montfort, is a Norman knight who carries immense grief beneath his armor. He is known to be a loyal knight, showing acts of selflessness throughout the novel, knowing that it may cost him a heavy price.

The story has several moments of heartache, but beneath the ache, there is beauty. Watching our main protagonists navigate through their circumstances made each moment of hope, kindness, and unspoken feelings carry more weight. And the yearning in the novel was beautifully written. I would find myself tearing up, not knowing what fate had in store for them.

The book can be a painful read, but the beauty within it lingers.

If you are looking for something unique, a very slow romance, set in an unusual time period, filled with twists, turns, and surprises then this belongs on your TBR.

This is my fourth book by Lauren Lee Merewether and once again she has crafted a story that stayed with me long after the final page.

The Thornwyck Rose comes with a content warning for abuse and I'm glad it did. I was better prepared to interact with a past society where women were treated as possessions and had no voice. They could be physically assaulted (with witnesses) and their abuser received no consequences. I realize that some societies today operate under a similar philosophy, but on the whole, I would like to believe we are starting to move past that. Starting to allow women to have their own voice, using it in their circle(s) of influence, expanding to others around them.

While painful to read in places, there was also joy in redemption and hope that all would come right in the end. Abuse was never glorified, rather, it was shown to be the way of a coward instead of a genuine leader. As to romance, it is tender, gentle, and delayed, yet all the while it is kept pure and sweet. There were places that I felt dragged on longer than necessary, but the vast majority of the book is well-paced and vividly descriptive, pulling one into the world of the 12th Century AD.

This book was heartbreakingly beautiful. I was drawn into the story from the beginning and grew to love the main characters, flawed and morally grey though they were. A few of the side characters were a little one-dimensional, but most of them were equally complex. The romance in this book was a great improvement over The Darkest Oath where I never knew why they liked each other. Here it was very obvious and well-founded. The world felt gritty and real, and the time period setting created a lot of interesting plot points and character backgrounds. My only tiny gripe was I thought the book should've ended before the king plotline at the very end - that seemed both unnecessary to the overall story and underdeveloped, with the resolution being very deus ex machina in the end. Which I guess kind of went with the whole prayer theme, but since we knew it was never God's doing that felt ill-suited to the rest of the book at that point. Other than that weird blip at the end, the plot and pacing worked wonderfully and the ending was very satisfying.

It was such a captivating story. Seren was such a strong woman and honestly an amazing example for all women of all times.

Erik - omg - my heart kept breaking for him. The things he had to do in order to protect the ones he loved 😔 And his yearning and the things he said in that last chapter AWWWW I was giggling and kicking my feet!!!

My only critique would be I wished it was longer (even tho it's a 600 page book) lol. I just need more Erik and Seren! 💗

From the very first page, the story completely drew me into its world, and I simply couldn't put it down. The grip this story had on me, ooohhh man. I could not put down Seren’s story. The emotional turmoil, hard choices, testament to faith and beauty rising from so much pain had me turning the page “just one more time”.

Thornwyck Rose is a well balanced, emotionally compelling story, that showed true grit and the realities for women in the medieval age. It did not shy from the harsh but was written in a way that compelled not glorified. I truly appreciated this was a closed door novel, but did not lack in heart or yearning.

I felt for the women of that time and for Eric and Ragnar who weren’t accepted because they were Norseman. Great book, easy to read. I was surprised by the warning at the beginning of the boom regarding violence, etc, as it was written based on typical actions of the time period. Though descriptive, the book was not graphic. I would allow my young teenage daughter to read it. As a before bed reader, I couldn't wait to pick up my book each night to see what was coming next. I will be reading any sequels that come out!

I love historic romance novels and this one is exquisite. The story makes you turn the pages fast enough and it will stay with you. Though cowardly abuse of women made my stomach turn sometimes, the characters’ s pride, bravery, compassion and wit makes up for it.
