Roommate from Hell

Rate this book
The most important person in Matthew's life is God. That is, until he meets Xander. Now his faith is tested, his innocence challenged, by the lust he feels for his nihilistic and sadistic roommate. College is supposed to be a time of experimentation, but some experiments may go too far. When Xander locks him in a chastity device, Matthew begins to wonder if desire this intense can be controlled by mere faith. This 23,000 word gay erotic story contains scenes of oral and anal sex, as well as scenes involving chastity devices, sexual humiliation, bondage, and various other kinky things.

Thomas Carver lives the dream, with one foot in the midwest and one on the west coast. He's been seen at the opera and at the biker bar, a cocktail party and the alley behind the dumpsters. He's worked in the hot sun and the air-conditioned office, and knows all the gradations of pleasure between caviar on his tongue and sand between his teeth.

Young student with a hair shirt and the Old Testament (OT) shackled to his ankles, shares a room with a laid-back older student, a devotee of ‘The Divine Marquis’, to quote Swinburne. Horizons are broadened and the OT begins to gather dust.

A little too much OT fundamentalism for my taste..it became tedious.

Eh, not my favorite Carver book. The kink is pretty low key and the religious undertones were grating, to say the least. Some reviewers don't like the way Carver just leaves things at the end, but I liked it. Sometimes endings don't have to be absolute.

I do think this may have served as a template for The Frosh. Certainly some similar themes.

Had potential

Could have been as amazing as some of the other books from the author, but once again it was a let down. The author seems totally against HEA or seems to love a good build up without release. Just like what his subs go through usually in his books. What typeof ending is that? Seriously, l might have to remove the author from my list of favorite authors. I keep being let down. Not enough. Could have developed those characters more. And give us a decent ending for once! So far l have been let down more than l have been satisfied by the author’s books

I was reading to give it at least 3 stars, maybe 4 if the ending blowed my mind away but in actuality the ending crashed every hope and dream I’ve ever had. Horrible ending. Not a “happy” ending if you enjoyed the two characters together and wanted them to stay that way. Nothing happened, not really.

Solid 3 Stars

Why was this surprisingly sweet? I was not sure how I would feel about this at first glance as it deals with a topic I truly do not care for (religion). But it ended up having a decent message surprisingly and the ending was sweet. Everything between was a good amount of spicy and was rather enjoyable.

Not a romance, but a surprisingly heartfelt exploration of one young man's coming out - out of a restrictive faith setting, into his sexuality and into sensuality (and through that into new ideas of divinity, connection), into submission.

I listened to the audiobook. I think I would have liked it more if the reader sounded a bit a younger. I can't lie, I got hard and appreciated a lot of scenarios, but it was difficult getting there due to the internal transformation from super religious to sacrilegious.

This was a bit of a mindf**k...not the worst I've read, but pretty potent for a short story. I really don't like bdsm...particularly the standard aspects of a "scene" (the St. Andrews cross, bdsm clubs, formal bondage and graded pain levels). I don't approve or disapprove...I'm just over it. However, I'm reading bdsm as part of a challenge, and I thought that with the college setting along with the relative brevity of this book, that I'd be getting off easy with this read. Boy, was I wrong!

I couldn't give this book a low rating, because despite my issues with the content, it was lightning quick and far from boring...actually, I stayed pretty engaged. BUT, I couldn't give it a high rating because my fascination was wrapped up in varying levels of discomfort, horror and disgust...like watching a trainwreck with excessive carnage...

My boundaries were pushed...and at times, exceeded. There were parts of the story that literally made me sick to my stomach. For example, Am I missing something. Is this in any way sexy? Revolting, seriously revolting.

Heads up! This review will be almost identical to another book I'll be reviewing tonight "Group Work" by the same author. So, if you follow my reviews, you may experience a bit of "deja vu" when you read that one...there will be some differences though, because believe it or not, that book was even more offensive!

Self discovery and submission

I thought that Matt's faith got shaken a bit too easily and quickly to be realistic. Also, if he wasn't even allowed to watch Star Wars, how did he convince his parents to allow him to go to college, especially not a private, religious one?

Xander was a pretty stereotypical alpha type. Though, again, if being at college is so important to him, why didn't he seem to try to get better grades?

Despite a couple of spots where I had trouble suspending my disbelief, I actually liked both characters and the story was very hot.
