A Great Place to Start

Full disclosure: I'm a total Fool and yes, I work at The Motley Fool so my review may be somewhat biased. But that doesn't make what this book teaches any less true. This is an excellent read for the beginning investor and a wonderful reminder for all investors of just how easy it really can be and how important this subject truly is. Foolish investing is about investing in great businesses on a consistent basis, in the ups and downs, and letting time do the rest. This book helps hammer that point (and many more) home. Worth the read!

Finally a book that doesn't tell you to stop wasting money at Starbucks, but rather to give Starbucks more of your money.

Excellent primer on the Motley Fool approach to personal finance

In some respects, the Motley Fool Guide to Investing for Beginners is super basic. But in other respects it highlights advanced topics for further study. This book is more about financial planning than investing, but elements of investing are included.

It’s written in a light, informative and fun manner which helps you get through the drier portions of the book and includes essays from several Motley Fool personalities. As for the three stock picks at the end of the book, they are still solid companies to this day with 3-year performance gains of 55%, 31%, and 137% respectively. In summary, this is an excellent primer on the Motley Fool approach to personal finance.

Excellent basic read!

Helps you feel confident to start your investing journey. This doesn’t promise you the winning lottery ticket (i.e. strategy), but more so the tools to start you in the most sound direction, so you don’t just sink from the get go due to total ignorance. Short and excellent read.

Good summarized analysis

This is short and straightforward. Keep in mind that it is intended to show what Motley Fool offers to the public, so expect references to their products and services. Anyway, I found it handy and useful.

I gotta admit, I've been really into investing as of late. Because honestly, if we are just going to put our money in the bank, it will not be able to keep up with inflation.

And as a beginner in the world of investing, I find this book really helpful! It's straight forward and easy to understand. The best takeaway I got from it, and what I've been going by a lot right now, is asking myself if a certain purchase is a "good investment".

So now, instead of blindly buying stuff, I stop and ask myself:

Is this the best investment I can make with this dollar bill?

From there, I'd be able to identify if buying a certain item is more of a want than need. Thus, consciously making smarter money choices with my purchases.

I also like the fact that they have a realistic take on investing and/or saving money. It takes account of us small folks who are just getting by. That's why reading this was not daunting at all. In a way, it gives you hope that even you can invest and make yourself rich. BECAUSE THE BEST TIME TO INVEST IS NOW.

Do you invest in stocks? Think people are more likely to avoid stocks as much as possible due to the "risk" that is involved. I used to be one of those people. Common response from people are "I would like to but I just don't have the time." Again, I made the same excuse as well. Reading this book has changed my life in the way I think about stocks. I now have more confidence about stocks and consider myself a Fool.

You would think if there is anyone who should be confident about stocks, it would be me. Humble brag here but my undergrad degree is in business and have received my MBA not too long ago. None of my business related classes had any practical use when it comes to investing in the stock market. These guys break it down for anyone to understand.

Even using their methods, the task is daunting because there are literally thousands and thousands of stocks. So I think people at this point give up and look to pay for services like an advisor or turn to mutual funds. The books goes over the cons over those two options. This is where Motley Fool’s Stock Advisor premium service comes in to play. I think it is well worth your money to subscribe. They do all the work for you and you can just pick and choose from their list. One thing I'll admit is that they do some serious advertising that can get annoying at times.

Their Stock Advisor has been around since 2002 and they’ve made recommendation such as Amazon (AMZN) when it was $15.31 or Disney (DIS) at $1.83 or Netflix (NFLX) at $2.33. Get my point?

Now if you don’t like paying for a service, you can also get stock samplers on the Rule Breaker Investor podcast. You can go through the listing of podcasts and look for stock samplers. I think those sample picks alone have out performed the S&P 500 over the years.

For long term investing, I don’t think you can go wrong with stocks. Put it this way, during one of the worst recessions in 2006-2008, stock market not only bounced back to higher levels but have since performed amazingly just like it did during the Great Depression. There has been no point in our history where the market has not rebounded higher than what it was before so it does not bother me when I hear that market fell or crashed because I know it is going to go back up.

Books like this are ones that everyone must read and earlier the better. I’ve since gifted my books to several people trying to pass on the knowledge. I’ve made significant investment in stock market and have been beating the average market return. Any Fools out there?

I've had this book on my personal shelf for years...I've just gotten to do some research in it and it has helped me understand the DOW Jones a bit better. The book has also helped me understand the importance of compound interest. If you are a new investor or need to brush up on basic investing skills this is the book for you. It points you in the right directions and makes you yearn to close it and get to work on building your own portfolio.

A short introduction to buying and owning stocks. No surprises and this a book to a very novice person with extremely low or no knowledge about stocks. I guess I was expecting a little bit more deep information on how to pick stocks, how to read financial reports or whatever.
If you know anything about stocks, then you don't need to read this book.
