Nightshade Extermination: A Fantasy Adventure for Men

Rate this book
Surviving the Void turned him into a weapon, a void hunter.

Jordan Henderson lives in a world where dimensional rifts can tear open at any moment, flooding city blocks with toxic air and nightmare creatures. When an accident left him trapped in one, instead of dying, he walked out with the ability to fight back.

Now, Jordan and others like him stand between the city and total annihilation. Unfortunately, not everyone with power has good intentions. When he uncovers a conspiracy that could trigger another apocalypse, the people behind it mark him for death.

To save the city he calls home, Jordan teams up with a genius, redhead half vampire with a perky attitude and a feisty, katana-wielding kitsune with an agenda. Their enemies are powerful, ruthless, and will stop at nothing until they are eliminated.

But Jordan and his women are no pushovers, and their enemies are about to learn that the hard way.

Void Hunter is a slow-burn, action-packed, urban fantasy harem adventure with a competent MC. It also features minor integration of litRPG elements. The series is perfect for fans of Bleach, Devil May Cry, and Zenless Zone Zero.

I made it about 56% of the way through this book before I put it down, as I just didn't care about the MC, the first LI, or the other two women introduced.

The MC is one of the few people that can survive in the Void, due to a previous exposure that didn't kill them, but mutated them somewhat. He's built like a tank, and it feels like intelligence and charisma were his dump stats. He's boring, and women like him because he's a muscle bound oaf. His social awareness and skills are pretty poor.

The first LI is the daughter of his adoptive parents. She's a super genius at creating tech, and has the personality of an overcaffeinated squirrel running on your roof at 5AM. She's had a crush in the MC since forever, but she's just not very interesting. I'm sure most will like her for her oversized chest, but that doesn't do much for me.

I swear I read the first chapter or two before, maybe as a preview from another book by the author. That really threw me off at first, which didn't help my enjoying the book.

Great first entry in a novel new series

Troy has built another new world that has some familiar settings and themes while building something completely new. The concept of the voids, a kind of broken Zelda dark world style region that can be overlaid on the real world and is poisonous death for most is a fascinating way to provide people with powers and monsters to fight. Add rival hunters, evil mega corps, and a childhood friend that might become more and you have a great story here that I can't wait to see more of, even if they did have an in universe tease that they were also waiting for Sword of Elathia 4, which hasn't be written yet at time of this release. Read this and enjoy a new setting from Troy while you wait for more swords, so you can also wait for more of this.

Great start to a series

Nicole is an absolutely amazing character, the dynamic between her and Jordan is fantastic. This book is really good even without that dynamic but it definitely takes the book up a notch. I'll be looking forward to more of this one.

Not bad, interesting plot and characters. My only complaint is that the MC is 27 but acts like a 14 year old, he's very immature. The other characters are constantly infantilizing him. If his age wasn't stated in the book, you'd think he was 18.
