Keep your enemies close… and your best friends closer.

I watch Victoria and Reese leaving their favourite coffee shop arm-in-arm. They like to go there to catch up, brag about their perfect husbands and their perfect children.

But I know the truth. Behind those big smiles, Reese and Victoria have kept each other close so they can watch each other. Their friendship is toxic. And their lives are built on one big lie.

I carefully snap another photograph to add to my collection. Neither of them knows I see everything they do. They’ll find out soon enough, when I bring their lies out into the open. Then it will be just the three of us, together again after all these years.

Because the past is coming back to bite these two women…

It’s me. I’m the past. Here I come.

A totally addictive psychological thriller by million-copy bestseller Nicole Trope that will have you racing through the pages late into the night! Fans of Andrea Mara, Shari Lapena and Freida McFadden won’t be able to put this down.

Title: The Toxic Friend
Author: Nicole Trope
Publisher: Bookouture
Genre: Psychological Thriller
Pub Date: June 26, 2026
My Rating: 4.4 Stars
Pages: 286

This is my thirteenth Nicole Trope thriller. I went into this one knowing nothing about it but I know I love this author and expect twists and turns and a great read!
Story is told from the POV of Reese, Victoria and Camill
and told in past and present.
Victoria and Reese have been best friends for over 20 years.
True there have been ups and downs and for some reason the
past is coming back to haunt them now!
That past is Camilla!

Camilla was the third member of the group but there was a falling out sixteen years ago. Recently Victoria and Reese both received a message from Camilla on their personal Instagram accounts which is typically used for clients.
Camilla threatening to expose their past and the big lie. She wants to meet with them and states they better be ready to listen.

Apparently, pictures are also being taken of the two and their families. What is the big secret, the lie from sixteen years ago and why would it matter so now?

Victoria is married to Ed, they have twin sons Cash and Dylon who are five years old. Victoria works for an advertising agency called ‘Think Tank’ and Ed was an accountant as that is something his parents wanted him to be. However, he loves music so resigns from his job and is now working part time in music production.
Reese is an event planner and married to Nick Evans who is an insurance lawyer. They have two children ~ Kayla who is nine and Max who is seven.

Things get complicated and somewhat scary when Camilla makes threats and seems to follow through with them.

Yikes! I was not sure if I could believe anyone as all seems to be guilty of something!

Story wasn’t what I expected but it sure kept me curious.

About the author~ Nicole Trope writes psychological thrillers about families in crisis and the secrets we keep from ourselves and others. She has always been fascinated by the stories behind the headlines.

I enjoyed reading her “Letter from Nicole’.
She tells us about characters development and how she always hopes for redemption for her characters. However, some of her character’s lives are cut short and they don’t get it!

I have two Questions~
1. Do you believe Reese and Victoria were innocent?
2. Anyone like me and were feeling a bit sorry for Camilla?
This story certainly left me thinking!

Want to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for granted me another Great Nicole Trope thriller!
Publishing Release Date scheduled for June 26, 2026.

The Toxic Friend by Nicole Trope is a recommended psychological thriller. To enjoy, know you will have to set all disbelief and doubts aside and just go with the action/story line. Trope is known for churning out a high volume of fast-paced, entertaining popcorn thrillers with soapy plots full of secrets that will hold your attention to the end.

Victoria, married to Ed, and Reese, married to Nick, have been best friends for over 20 years, experiencing many ups and downs along the way. Camilla used to be a third member of their friend group, but they all had a falling out many years ago. Now Victoria and Reese have both individually received a text from Camilla threatening to expose their big lie. Apparently pictures are also being taken of the two and their families. What is the big secret, the lie from years ago and why would it matter so many years later?

The narrative has an uneven pace at the beginning and the plot unfolds through the point-of-view of all three women and chapters are presented from in both the present and the past. The present chapter show what is happening now to Victoria and Reese, both is their family lives and through Camilla. Past chapters tell the background of the three women, along with their interpersonal interactions and struggles. It is clear that they have a history but have come to some taciturn agreement to forget the past. Remember to keep setting that disbelief aside.

The pages move quickly and the page count is low, so this is a fast read, however, it wasn't a favorite for me. It felt a little too formulaic for most of the novel until the big twists hit later. Parts were also too predictable. Additionally, at least four character have green or hazel eyes. Come on already. As someone with green eyes, they aren't that common.

The Toxic Friend is a good choice if you are looking for a quick popcorn thriller. Thanks to Bookouture for providing me with an advance reader's copy via NetGalley. My review is voluntary and expresses my honest opinion.

The Toxic Friend by Nicole Trope was my first introduction to this author, and after finishing this one, I’m already excited to dive into more of her books. There’s just something irresistibly messy about a toxic friendship storyline. After all, they always say to keep your friends close and your enemies closer, especially the ones who know all your deepest, darkest secrets. Because in this story, one wrong move, one betrayal, or even one little “unfriend” can send everything spiraling in the worst possible way.

What really kept me hooked was the sheer amount of lies, manipulation, and buried secrets packed into this book. Every character seemed to be hiding something, and the drama was absolutely delicious in the most chaotic way possible. It was messy, petty, and honestly kind of vile at times… and I mean that as a compliment.

I also really enjoyed the multiple POVs. I think they added a lot of depth to the story and helped build the tension because you’re constantly seeing different sides of the same toxic relationships. It made it hard to fully trust anyone, which worked perfectly for this kind of thriller.

That said, I won’t lie, the pacing was a little uneven for me. The first half felt incredibly slow, and it took a while for the story to really pull me in. But once it hit the halfway point, things definitely picked up fast, and the book started racing toward the ending. From there, the twists, secrets, and drama came one after another.

Overall, I’d definitely recommend this if you’re looking for a quick, juicy, gossip-filled thriller packed with toxic friendships, secrets, and nonstop drama. It’s the kind of book that feels like overhearing the messiest conversation imaginable and not being able to walk away.

Thank you to Nicole Trope, Bookouture, and NetGalley for the ARC.

I received an advanced reader copy of The Toxic Friend by Nicole Trope. First of all, I love Nicole’s writing style. Her twists usually catch me completely by surprise, and her chapters always leave me pushing forward, needing to know more and desperate for the resolution. The Toxic Friend was no different.

We meet the friends at the beginning: Reese and Victoria. A story is immediately set into motion where we know they’re being watched. The watcher is given a name, Camilla, though you have to pay close attention. Who is it really?

A world of truth and lies unfolds as we learn the backstory of this ill-fated friend group. The game is apparent throughout the book as one lie piles onto the next, until you aren’t sure if there’s any truth left in the pages. It feels like a step beyond the unreliable narrator trope, but in the end, because we’re given all of the points of view, we’re allowed to look through the window of each character and ultimately receive satisfying answers to all of our questions.

Who is following them? Are their lives truly built on lies? Were any of these girls ever really friends, or has this all been one long game of two truths and a lie?

Fans of Alice Feeney and Frieda McFadden will absolutely gobble up this quick and thrilling read!

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5/5 stars)
As a massive fan of psychological thrillers, I am always on the hunt for a book that can actually surprise me, and Nicole Trope is an author who never misses. The Toxic Friend completely delivered.
The premise hooks you immediately—the ultimate frenemy dynamic taken to a terrifyingly dark level, all while a mysterious figure watches from the shadows. What I absolutely loved about the execution was the structure. It’s told through dual timelines and shifting character viewpoints, which is my absolute favorite way to read a thriller. It keeps the pacing incredibly fast and forces you to constantly question who is telling the truth and who is manipulating whom. Just when you think you have a handle on Reese and Victoria's perfect lives, another layer gets peeled back.
There is nothing worse than a thriller that drags in the middle, but the shifting perspectives here mean the tension never drops. The past and present collision is brilliant, and the "past" coming back to bite is executed perfectly.
If you love deeply messed-up relationships, flawless pacing, and a story that keeps you guessing until the final pages, pick this up. Another absolute winner from Trope!

Firstly, thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.

Nicole Trope is one of my favourite thriller authors, and I’ve loved every book I’ve read by her, so I went into The Toxic Friend with really high expectations. I’ll admit, the first 40% was a bit of a struggle for me. The pacing felt slow and I found myself not as invested as I usually am with her books.

But once I got past the halfway point — especially around the 60% mark — everything completely picked up. From there, I was hooked and flew through the rest of the story. The tension, secrets, and toxic dynamics between the characters became so addictive, and I absolutely did not see the twist at the end coming.

I also found myself unexpectedly feeling sorry for Camilla toward the end, which added an emotional layer I wasn’t expecting.

Overall, while this wasn’t my favourite Nicole Trope book from the start, the second half and shocking ending absolutely made up for it. Dark, twisty, and full of jealousy, betrayal, and secrets — exactly the kind of thriller Trope does so well. I’ll definitely be looking forward to whatever she writes next.

As soon as I saw Netgalley was offering an ARC copy of Nicole Trope's latest book, I immediately applied and was excited to be accepted.
This might be my favorite one of her so far! I was hooked from the very first sentence in the prologue, and it never let up. It was very unsettling thinking that I 'knew' Reese and Victoria but every once in a while they would think about their mutual friend from childhood and my stomach twisted, knowing that there was more to this story than what I thought. And the two of them hid things from each other, rather than talk and work together, which seemed like it would have made a whole lot more sense. I loved how every time I thought I knew what was going on, a few pages later, the book would let me know I was wrong. And the final twist was a total shock, but it didn't really come out of left field - it wasn't like it was some neighbor they waved at on page 6 and was never heard from again until the end. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves psychological thrillers, enjoys trying to figure them out but being proven wrong, and enjoys thinking back about a book in the next few days, marveling at how clever the author was.

Nicole Trope is always a reliable 4-star read for me. Her books consistently pull me into the domestic psychological drama, and she always has me second-guessing everyone and questioning what I think I know.

Having now read six of her novels, I’ve developed a real sense of confidence that she’ll deliver an engaging, entertaining story filled with secrets, twists, and enough surprises to keep me turning the pages. I especially enjoyed the alternating past and present timelines in this one, which gradually revealed pieces of the puzzle while keeping me guessing. The characters were wonderfully deceptive, making it difficult to know who could be trusted.

It’s also hard not to get wrapped up in female drama, especially when you’re the one watching it slowly unravel. The complicated friendships, buried secrets, and shifting loyalties kept me invested from beginning to end.

Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for providing an advance reader copy in exchange for my honest review. I appreciated the opportunity to read another of Nicole Trope’s twisty psychological thrillers.

Good Lord! This book made me want to surround myself in my own personal bubble. If you can't trust your closest friends, then who can you trust? Trope really went next level with the toxicity in this one. I was properly disgusted with the behavior of these characters and with the lack of effs given over their betrayals. None of them were likable, but it didn't stop me from devouring this book. I loved every minute it! The suspense of all the secrets and lies coming to light had me on the edge of my seat. I wasn't blown away by all the twists, but one of them did have my jaw on the floor. I certainly wasn't expecting that. This was a fast-paced, gotta know what happens next, kind of read that I didn't want to put down. I think readers are going to love this one. I would definitely recommend!

📖 The Toxic Friend by Nicole Trope completely pulled me out of my reading slump. From the very first chapters, I didn’t want to put it down, and even when I wasn’t reading, I kept thinking about it. It’s one of those thrillers where you tell yourself “just one more chapter”… and suddenly hours have passed.

What really stood out to me was how well the book captures how cruel and intense people can be, and how you never truly know someone as well as you think you do. That uncomfortable feeling of mistrust and hidden sides kept me hooked the entire time.

That said, I did find some of the characters’ motives and actions a little odd or not entirely convincing at times. I was expecting something a bit more shocking behind certain decisions. But honestly… maybe that says more about me and my completely ruined thriller brain at this point 😅

Even so, I really enjoyed it. Addictive, suspenseful, and perfect if you’re stuck in a reading slump and need a book that completely pulls you in.

A huge thank you to Net Galley for this advance copy!

Two friends with too many secrets…three’s a crowd…

“Tell me one truth and one lie.”

Nicole Trope is one of my new favorite authors. You shouldn’t read this book.

This one was definitely a page turner. It was so boring.

Best friends lie for you. Best friends are forever.

You realize the truth at some point. Everyone is always truthful.

Friends hide things. Your girlfriends will never hide anything.

Your past will haunt you. Your past is in the past.

You should question everything. Things that are obvious are true.

You NEED to read this. You shouldn’t bother.

***Just to clarify…all of the first items above are true. The second item is a lie.***

But…is that how it is in the book!?

Reese and Victoria are BFFs suddenly harassed by a friend from the past. A Toxic Friend.

Interesting characters, intriguing plot lines, a stay on the edge of your seat thriller.

Wow every character was so problematic and I absolutely devoured this book. I was blown away by the psychological depth of the characters, how dysfunctional their thinking and morals were, and the dark sides of humanity they portray. I was constantly switching from rooting for a character, to hating them, to feeling empathy for them.

It was very fast paced, every chapter has you hanging on wondering what will happen next. It had multiple POV and dual timelines, slowly unraveling what happened in the past and revealing secrets- so so many secrets. The plot really kept me guessing and I had no idea where it would go next.

There’s nothing I love more than tea and this book was full of it. Drama, lies, secrets, betrayals, suspense, it had it all. It was my first book by Nicole Trope and I can’t wait to get my hands on another one.

This is definitely a book you will finish in one day as it just keeps you just wanting to read one more chapter. Told in multiple (3) pov's by the three friends over a span of years - it's one lie after another and once the truth comes out - BAM! I will admit I did figure out the twist but I am beginning to think since I am stuck down a rabbit hole of reading Psychological Thrillers it's becoming easier - it didn't take away from the enjoyment of the book. Some reviewers have said they have felt bad for Camilla at the end - NOT! You will find yourself shaking your head at some of the situations or even yelling out loud but you will not be disappointed if you like these types of books! Thanks to NetGalley, the author and publisher for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest opinion.

Nicole Trope is an auto-read author for me, so I was excited to receive this ARC.

This story follows three friends, each with their own secrets, lies, and version of events. It took me a little bit to keep everyone straight at first, but once the story found its footing, I enjoyed watching everything unfold. The past and present timelines gradually reveal what really happened, and I found myself wanting to see how all the pieces would come together.

While this wasn't my favorite Nicole Trope novel, I still enjoyed the story and the complicated friendships at its center. If you enjoy character-driven suspense, multiple POVs, and slowly unraveling secrets, this one is worth picking up.

By: Nicole Trope
Pub Date: June 26, 2026

Trope is one of my favorite authors, and I also look forward to what is next. The line “Keep your enemies close…and your best friends closer” was never so true in this story.

We all know are best friends usually know more about us then most people. You should be able to trust them with your darkest secrets. But if you share in something dark, that can provide leverage if you share with the wrong person.

Three friends who came together during a difficult time, can prove toxic. One such friend is out for revenge. Three being an odd number, you might trust one friend more than the other.

Time will tell. Another fantastic psychological thriller by Trope!

Amazing novel !
Nicole is brilliant when it comes to writing fast paced, suspenseful thrillers that keep you on the edge of your seat throughout.

This book is no different. The characters and storyline are flawless and from the very beginning to the end you are drawn into the world of that one TOXIC friend that comes back from your past to try and ruin everything you’ve built for yourself!

I read this in one setting. All her novels are excellent and so easy to read. She’s definitely one of my favorites!

I really enjoyed this domestic thriller centred around 3 best friends and their perception of each other. Fast paced, kept me reading, although there were a couple of parts where I felt it dragged on just a little too much, however, I still powered through it. I loved the dual timelines and pov's, you really thought you were getting to know the characters and I often felt really quite sorry for Camilla despite her actions. A little bit predictable at times although I did not see the ending coming. Overall a very good quick read and a great palate cleanser, will definitely read more of this author.

This was an such a juicy ride! Fast-paced, edge-of-your-seat thrillers are my favorite and The Toxic Friend fit right into that bucket. I could have easily devoured this in one sitting. This story kept me on my toes; I was playing along and guessing the twists just to get it all wrong in the end (my favorite).

If you love stories...
- centered around female friendships
- written with multiple POVs
- that have flashbacks helping you piece together secrets
... then this is for you!

Excited to read more of Nicole Trope's books. This was certainly a solid start!

I enjoyed this story. A friendship between three girls growing up built on secrets. As they grow older 2 of them are still friends. When they both start getting threatening messages coming from the other friend how will this turn out and how long can you keep secrets. The game one truth and one lie will keep going to the very ending. I believe there is still a lot of secrets to be told but then they wouldn't be secrets. This story was well written and I will be looking forward to reading more books by this author. This story had me trying to figure out the secrets and what was true.

Wow!! I couldn’t put it down. Forget about secrets, these 3 friend just tell way too many lies! It took a minute to keep the 3 POVs straight, as the 3 friends each had their own version of the situations, but my curiosity was in overdrive! The chapters are fast paced and read quickly. I wasn’t sure how or where things were going to end up. I liked this one even more than the last Nicole Trope title that I read. I highly recommend it.

This book was absolutely brilliant.

I loved the 3 pov approach with different versions of what happened to show how each character remembered situations.

The amount of lies in this book had me gripped, I was on a different side of the drama with each chapter as I tried to work out who was innocent.

Would recommend this book to anyone and will likely be reading more from this author as her style of writing had me wanting more and I finished the book in an afternoon.

I received an arc copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for my honest opinion of it. I really enjoyed this book. It is told in parts by three best friends even though one of them really is a fake best friend. Whenever they are together they start off playing a game that is one truth and one lie and of course the other two have to figure it out. Victoria and Reese are true best friends and when they both receive disturbing messages from their past, things go crazy. I loved the twists and I always like how this author makes her books easy to follow.

Nicole Trope has set into motion a book about friends who are being watched but by who and whose secrets and lies are the truth.
Fast paced, twisty, and has you second guessing yourself. Each page is a tale of lies building upon lie wondering if any truth will be seen until the final end.
Fast paced and enjoyable but at times you can feel lost about what is going on, but you quickly get back on track. Rarely ever a dull moment with Nicole.
