The monster never promised to be good. Only loyal.
ROWAN After my mother’s murder sends my life spiraling, my boyfriend carts me off to an isolated rehab facility. He calls it saving me. I call it suspicious. But the therapy and forced sobriety aren’t the worst things waiting inside. Something watches me from the corner of my room. Red eyes. Horns. A body made of shadows. He calls himself Caligo. And wherever I go, he follows. He wants to touch me. To possess me. And the more time I spend with him, the less certain I am that I want him to stop.
CALIGO Humans are fascinating creatures―fragile, flawed, and deliciously dishonest. Rowan Hayes, however, is different. His pain drew predators who mistook him for prey. They were wrong. Anyone foolish enough to betray him will answer to me. And if blood must be spilled to see him smile again... So be it. He thinks he belongs to the human world. He never did. His fear. His grief. His heart. All mine.
Noctis is a full-length MM dark (ish) monster romance as part of the Mayhem Manuscripts Cryptids shared world collaboration.
H.L Day is a teacher and a writer. She enjoys writing far too many different sub genres to stick to one thing so writes everything from rom-coms to post-apocalyptic sci-fi. It's just the way her brain works. H.L Day lives in the UK with her elderly black cat that she accidentally stole from her next door neighbour.
Noctus is part of the multi author Mayhem Manuscripts Season Two: Cryptids series. Each book can be read as a standalone but why not enjoy the whole series. This is the story of Rowan a human and Caligo a monster. I couldn't put this book down once I started it. This was a rollercoaster ride of twists and turns to solve a mystery. I loved Rowan and Caligo so much because they are perfect for each other. There were so many times I wanted to reach out to hug Rowan because of everything he went through. Caligo was possessive but also sweet and caring. There was also a lot of humor in the story. I just thoroughly enjoyed this book. I can't wait to see what H.L Day writes next because I know I will be reading it. I also can't wait for the next book in the series. I would definitely recommend this book and series. received a free review copy
Noctis is part of the Mayhem Manuscripts, Season 2: Cryptids series
This book follows Rowan and Caligo. Rowan is going through one of the worst periods of his life—his mother has been murdered, the culprit hasn’t been found, and to fill the void, he drinks and uses drugs. Trevor sends him to rehab, where he meets Caligo, who is completely and utterly obsessed with Rowan and follows him once he leaves rehab.
Caligo is extremely possessive, and Rowan tries to set boundaries as they attempt to figure out who killed his mother, so that Rowan can finally find some peace.
I really liked this book, though I do recommend reading the TWs first.
Well... I'm not mad I met read this one, but I was really expecting to love it a lot more than I did. Story itself was good and engaging, and yet somehow also ultimately unsatisfying. I think my lack of love for it boils down to two things. Well, two and a half:
1 - I'm out all for healthy emotional coping IRL but in a fantasy about a Shadow Monster I really would have liked to see
2 - The writing. It was refreshing to read human writing that didn't sound like the author had defaulted to Claude or some other ai model, and yet it completely lacked passion and depth for any of the characters. So while the story beats were interesting I actually didn't like or dislike or particularly care about or feel invested in either Cal or Rowan or really any of the side characters. There was never any *reason* for Cal to be so infatuated with Rowan - no actual chemistry, no good explanation for this mythology of the shadow people watching humans, no character growth other than Cal watching EastEnders, and a weird fluctuation between Cal not understanding normal human speech patterns despite centuries of having watched them, and then defaulting to almost casual slang that just felt completely out of character. 🙄
And Rowan was no better. There was literally no depth to him in terms of his relationship with Cal. He like the sex but treated him like shit and then missed him despite having never had any on-page examples of a real emotional connection. It was just very... weirdly superficial between them, which made their declarations of love even less compelling.
2.5 - the one character in all of this that I did actually feel something for was Doctor Logan.
Sigh. You know what this reminded me of? One of those cheap grocery store desserts that looks amazing but then you bite into it and realize all they did was use great food coloring and decorating tools while spending absolutely no effort on the flavor.
I knew it! I just knew I had to read this book because the blurb had me intrigued, the cover was captivating, and the author's name was a guarantee of quality for me. I devoured this book in two sittings (I had to sleep at some point, after all). It was incredibly addictive!
Rowan's mother was murdered, the killer is still walking free, and the police have no real leads to go on. Rowan is grieving. Every day without her mother hurts. He tries to drown his pain in alcohol and drugs, and whether he likes it or not, the truth is that he's become an addict. So his boyfriend takes matters into his own hands and checks him into rehab, far away from their home.
That's where he meets Caligo. Caligo loves watching people and studying their behavior. And from the moment he lays eyes on Rowan, everyone else becomes irrelevant. He follows Rowan. He watches Rowan. He wants Rowan. And then he starts talking to him. And reveals himself to him.
The plot itself is intriguing (I don't want to spoil anything), although I think the main characters are the book's greatest strength. The author has brought them quite literally to life. Their first time? The bathroom scene? Cal's abilities? I AM LOSING MY MIND! Where can I order a shadow monster for myself?!
Anyone willing to hurt you doesn’t deserve to breathe the same air as you. In fact, they don’t deserve to breathe at all.
Oh, and I must mention the humor! The novel tackles some heavy topics, and the jokes do such a great job of breaking up the tension! Not completely, of course—they don't make you forget about the difficult stuff, but they do give the reader a chance to catch their breath.
I would have loved a little more backstory for Caligo, but I got all the essential information, so I can't really complain. What I did miss, though, was a few more scenes between Rowan and her mom.
I'm absolutely satisfied with the ending and how everything was resolved, although I still don't understand Cal's biology (and honestly, I don't even know why I want to understand it). I was a little worried about how the two of them would be able to stay together, though.
I devoured every single page of this e-book, all while wishing it wouldn't end. I wouldn't call myself a huge monster romance reader, but I have a feeling that's about to change.
Rowan has been through a lot, and now he is being forced into a rehab in the middle of nowhere courtesy of his crappy boyfriend. Things get very eerie and interesting real quick, however because Rowan has become the center of attention to Caligo a shadow monster. Caligo (Cal) shows his interest in Rowan by stalking him while invisible and creeping on him in his room at night, which is maybe not the best way to go about things but he’s a monster so what are you gonna do? Their first meeting was definitely more of a meet scare than a meet cute. Rowan being the curious person he is decides to talk to his new monster admirer and winds up with a monster boyfriend instead. I have to say I’m pretty jealous of him because in my opinion Caligo is the perfect guy. He can shape shift in every way possible and I do mean every way, he can appear anywhere at any time he wants, he can protect you from pretty much anything and would happily destroy whatever or whoever tries to harm you, he’s a great listener, and honestly, there’s even more than this, but that’s just the highlights. During all of this, Rowan was fighting his own personal demons because of all the things that has happened in his life past and present. Seeing Caligo be so understanding and listening to Rowan when he says he needs something was so great and made me so happy for him because he deserves someone who would take care of him. 100% relationship goals. I think this was a fantastic addition to the series and I highly recommend it.
Tropes: Human x Shadow Monster, Addict Recovery, “Meet Scare”, Murder, Possession, Horns & Claws & Tail Oh My, Touch Him And Die, Customizable Monster Boyfriend
I was immediately captivated by Noctis with a plot that’s full of mystery, top tier monster spice, and an infatuated monster that can’t stop watching the human he decided is going to be his.
Poor Rowan, after his mother is murdered his boyfriend drops him off at a rehab facility. Although Rowan questions if he’s doing this for the right reasons. The plot twists in Noctis were so good I just didn’t want to put this book down.
Caligo was unhinged in an unexpected way, he was far from innocent but sometimes the things he did were with good intentions but very morally wrong. I absolutely loved his character and the lengths he would go to for Rowan. The spice between Rowan and Caligo was top tier. Caligo was unhinged and possessive but he also really respected Rowan and wanted him to be happy. I also really liked both of their character development and it was really interesting to read about.
One of my favorite scenes was them painting together and ofcourse the first time we learn Caligo can grow a certain appendage 🫠❤️! Noctis was a fantastic book, and very a unique monster romance with a plot that really keeps you so intrigued.
Part of a multi-author series (Mayhem Manuscripts Season Two: Cryptids), but can be read as a standalone. Paranormal. Size difference. Hurt/comfort. Dual POV. Heed content warnings.
Rowan is involuntarily admitted to a rehab facility where he;s supposed to deal with his alcohol and drug addictions as well as his grief. Meeting a shadow monster that becomes obsessed with him was not the plan, nor was falling for him.
I really enjoyed every aspect of Caligo, his protectiveness, his commitment to Rowan, his “mine” mentality and his ability to maintain himself even if Rowan thinks he wants something different. Rowan goes through it and he’s certainly a likable character as he struggles with all of his personal relationships as well as the loss of one that is the most important to him. I did tear up at times for both the characters, and felt they did build a special connection beyond the initial lust, and that was the most fun to read. Plenty of angst, steam, and an unusual romance, this was an entertaining book. 4.5 rounded up
I knew that when I started this book that it was going to keep me wanting to know what was going to happen next. I love me a good paranormal romance that will keep me intrigued.
Caligo and Rowan were so interesting and kept me on my toes. There was a lot of funny moments between them.
The way that these two was very unconventional and man, what a wild ride this was.
All I’m going to say is the ex is certainly a piece of work and I’m so glad that karma came at him tenfold because what in the world did he think was going to happen.
And ugh, my heart grew for these two when I read the epilogue. I just loved how this book had one of the most fun spicy scenes, some drama that we all needed, and the oh so sweet moments.
If you’ve been wanting to read any of this author’s books, I highly recommend this lovely gem.
I received a copy of this book and this is my honest review.
I loved Rowan and Caligo! This was such a fun, emotional, and twisty monster romance that I couldn't put down.
Rowan is dealing with the devastating loss of his mother, and watching him struggle with grief, alcohol, and drugs broke my heart. I wanted to wrap him up in a hug so badly. Then there's Caligo, the sweetest shadow monster who is completely and utterly obsessed with Rowan. The possessiveness, protectiveness, and devotion? SWOON!
I loved their dynamic, especially Rowan having to constantly remind Caligo that unaliving people isn't always the answer The humour, the mystery surrounding Rowan's mother's murder, and the way these two slowly connected made this such an entertaining read.
And THAT little twist at the end? I absolutely did not see it coming!
This was the perfect combination of monster romance, mystery, emotional healing, and humour. Rowan and Caligo were made for each other, and I loved every minute of their story. Definitely a must-read for monster romance lovers!

Noctis by H.L. Day is part of the multiauthor universe Mayhem Manuscripts Season Two: Cryptids. This series has been phenomenal and this was just another fascinating story in the collection.
This book focuses on Rowan. His boyfriend drops him off at a rehabilitation center claiming he is spending too much time drinking and partying after his mother’s murder. While in rehab, he meets Caligo, a shadow monster who watches people.
I adored everything about this one. Rowan was so believable in his grief and pain. Caligo was a perfect boyfriend, monster, to be there for him. The way their relationship developed was spot on. I really believed that they cared for each other. I also love how the author thought about the issues a relationship like theirs would face and addressed them. Really, really enjoyable. I highly recommend this one!
I received an ARC from the author for my honest review.
Safe to say I have a new favorite Shadow Daddy. Noctis had me hooked from the get go. I was not expecting the plot twist to plot twist so well. I have to admit out of two incidents, I caught on to one of them a little late but dammmm.
Rowan, spoiled rich boy who has never had to worry about money, is in a bad state and trying to self medicate by partytoo hard after losing his mom. Left with so many questions he spiraled, but rehab had other plans because Caligo set his red eyes on Rowan and that was it. Caligo was just swoony with his immediate intense feelings towards Rowan. I think what I loved most was how the sarcasm just oozed out of acaligo effortlessly you couldn’t help but giggle.
The cherry on top was how once Rowan understood his feelings towards Cal, he unapologetically loved his monster.
This was absolutely such an amazing read!! I loved everything about caligo and Rowan!!! I had an amazing time reading this I ate this up so fast it was that good!!! I was laughing and kicking my feed through this whole thing. The banter and back and forth between these 2 perfect, amazing and such a joy they were so funny I was constantly laughing at them!Caligo was the best possessive and cute/sweet and funny with very fun extras to him if you know what I mean! My poor sweet Rowan he went through so much and that plot twist blew my mind! He deserved the world and he got the perfect monster to be by his side!! Overall this was soo good the storyline was great once I started reading I just couldn’t put it down!!
I really enjoyed the evolution of this story. Nothing was a straight forward as it seemed and there was a real sense of mystery.
I love a mystery to solve.
The curiosity and development of the bond between Cal and pretty, pretty, Rowan was so cute in the way a giant shadow monster with horns, watching you as you sleep, could be.
I loved how protective Cal was but also respectful of boundaries. Rowan had some healing and trauma to work through and understanding that he could in fact set boundaries and have them respected was beautiful.
Really enjoyed the dynamics of the characters and the story here. A great plot with twists and turns.
Rowan's boyfriend dumps him in rehab after his mom's unaliving. At rehab a shadow person consisting of smoke, horns and glowing eyes named Caligo watches, engages and becomes obsessed with him. Rowan is his, Cal decided. And gradually Rowan wants Cal as his, too. The nonhuman is funny without realizing it, possessive and wants to give Rowan whatever he desires. Luckily, Rowan is moral, compassionate, not revenge seeking and knows where to draw the line, just wanting to find his mom's unaliver. Such and original idea that keeps you enthralled, I couldn't stop reading this. Great monster ( not really monster) story!
Noctis is book ten of the Mayhem Manuscripts Season Two: Cryptids Series.
This was a spicy read between Rowan and Caligo. There was a big mystery involved with the deeper story and I was very interested in seeing where it would go. Caligo knows that Rowan is someone special to him and sticks around to make sure Rowan knows this. I loved how caring Caligo was about everything with Rowan. He does what needs to be done to help Rowan and make sure his life is the best it can be.
Oh boy! The drama, the drama! This was a fun time. This read had betrayals, a shadow demon, a reveal that just made circumstances so much worse and an unlikely friendship. Overall I enjoyed reading about Rowan and Caligo. The blunders of Cal trying to understand humans emotions and colloquialisms made for many laughing moments.
-mm monster romance -monster x human -shadow daddy -loss of a parent -addiction rep -possessiveness/stalking
this was actually such a great story for this series!! i loved the drama of it all, it made it so messy & thats always my favorite thing!! definitely my second favorite of the shared world series so far!!
Rowan is dropped of at a rehab, and while there he encounters Caligo. Caligo is of the shadows and I find him so very fascinating! This had so many twists and turns, kept me on my toes. I loved their times together and it was really good!! Another phenomenal addition to this terrific multi-author series!
The plot was rather bland though and I did not really buy the romance between Rowan and Cal. The book was a decent enough read but left me feeling lukewarm overall. I feel like it had the potential to be much better but I did not manage to get emotionally invested in the characters, even though I usually love the archetypes of the MCs.
What a wild ride this one was. So many twist and turns, with many i was not expecting. I ended up loving Caligo. He has such a dark, dry sense of humor that you can't help but love. This season of mayhem Manuscripts has been so much fun so far! Thank you, HL Day for this ARC read 🖤🖤
I’m never quite sure what I will experience when I open up one of the Mahhem Manuscript books, and this book by H.L. Day was just that. What I expected was not what I was presented with in the BEST way possible. This was my first H.L. Day book, but it will NOT be my last!
Rowan Hayes is the son of an Earl; he’s wealthy and lives a life of privilege. But privilege is a double-edged sword. Having money grants access to a lot of unhealthy coping mechanisms such as alcohol and drugs, and these are what Rowan turns to when his mother is murdered. After months of benders and withdrawing from his friends and partner, Rowan is forced into a rehab facility far enough away from his home in London that he will not find it easy to escape. It’s there that he encounters a shadowy presence that turns his life around. Ronan is a bit broken; his father never really showed any interest in him, and his mother, who he was extremely close with, was found murdered and discarded. When in rehab, he is confronted with a lot of different information that could have sent him spiralling, but he focuses on proving people wrong. Rowan is artistic and strong. He’s grounded in his moral stance, which helps when he is teaching his new shadowy friend how to mix with the human world.
Caligo has been around for centuries. He has been living in the rehab clinic in The New Forest for a while now. The humans there can be entertaining; he’s never felt a connection to one, though, until a curly blond-haired man with sapphire blue eyes and deliciously plump lips shows up. The connection he feels to him is instantaneous, and he will do whatever it takes to protect him and make him happy, even if it means protecting him from himself. Caligo is a monster; he isn’t burdened by the human ideas of what is right or wrong. He just does what needs to be done. This involves possession and the occasional intent to murder. But the more he gets to know Rowan and wants to make him happy, the more he starts to take on Rowan's ideals, eventually ending up with Caligo saving Rowan from his own choices.
I LOVED the relationship between Caligo and Rowan; it could have so easily gone in the opposite direction from what it did and ended up with Rowan being nothing more than a prisoner in his own life. I really enjoyed how their open conversations and willingness to see each other for who they are deep down helped each other to grow into their perfect other halves.
The twists and turns that this story put Rowan through were heartbreaking to witness, and he handled a lot of it with more grace and poise than I would have ever thought possible. I had a hunch that the person responsible for his mother's death would be who it was, but my heart absolutely shattered for him during their confrontation. It really cemented how much Caligo had developed as a character when he acted in Rowan's best interests rather than his desires in the moment. The person responsible got what they deserved in the end, and I was pleased when they put their foot in their own mouth.
My heart soared at the ending of this story, and I am so happy that they managed to find a way to have the best of both of their worlds, and that they found one person who they could let into their truth.
I really enjoyed this addition to the Mayhem Manuscripts collaboration, and I am looking forward to reading more from H.L. Day.
An absolutely unhinged, deliciously dark, and laugh-out-loud funny monster romance that will have you obsessed! H.L. Day delivers an absolute knockout with Noctis, serving up a wild, high-stakes paranormal ride that effortlessly blends grief, twisted mystery, and steamy heat with pure comedic brilliance. Featuring a terrifying, horn-and-tailed shadow daddy who takes things literally and turns into a giant softie on a leash for his human, this book is an utterly addictive, comforting nightmare in all the best ways possible!
The story follows Rowan Hayes, who is drowning in grief, alcohol, and drugs following his mother's murder, leading his shady boyfriend to dump him at an isolated rehab facility. But the scariest things aren’t the sudden forced sobriety and rehabilitation, it’s what lurks in his room. Watching from the darkest corners is Caligo, a massive, ancient shadow cryptid with glowing red eyes, horns, and a lethal appetite. Though Caligo terrifies Rowan at first, the shadow monster makes it crystal clear that he isn't there to harm him; he wants to possess him, protect him, and utterly ruin anyone who dares to cross him. When Rowan leaves rehab, he quickly discovers Caligo goes wherever he wants, and where he wants to be is right by Rowan's side, unleashing a series of chaotic events that turn Rowan's world completely upside down. Caligo is the total package for shadow daddy lovers, a massive, shapeshifting creature of the dark who can morph into smoke, control shadows, and alter his physical size (and... appendages...yes that one!) to suit Rowan's every desire. Watching him threaten absolute annihilation to anyone who hurts his human is ridiculously satisfying. Caligo is a deadly ancient predator, yet his deadpan, literal interpretation of everyday human life and societal quirks had me cackling out loud. His unhinged personality makes him completely irresistible.
The mystery behind Rowan's mother's death builds up incredible tension. I predicted the mystery and enjoyed every ounce of vengeance that pursued. Watching karma catch up to those who wronged Rowan, with Caligo eagerly stepping in to dish out bloody justice, delivers the ultimate payoff. The dynamic between Rowan and Laura bonding over Caligo's chaotic presence is so unexpectedly funny and heartwarming, adding a great layer of camaraderie amidst the hectic drama. Watching Rowan battle through his grief was heartbreaking. On top of his loss, Rowan had to deal with the epitome of trash (his ex Tyler), as if he didn't have enough going on. the audacity of Tyler. I knew he was an asshole from the moment he spoke. I finished this book feeling completely smitten with a terrifyingly sweet shadow cryptid who doubles as an absolute menace to the rest of the world!
H.L. Day delivers an insanely fun mix of paranormal drama, deadpan comedy, and scorching heat that keeps you hooked from page one. Seeing Rowan finally get the fierce, bloody devotion he deserved from an ancient creature of the night was every bit as satisfying as it was chaotic. If you love possessive monsters, glorious karma, and a dark romance that still leaves you grinning like a fool, you have to add this to your TBR right now!
Before I get started, I would like to state that I have been sent this book as an ARC, however everything I say is my honest opinion of what I think. Thank you to the author for also! Now, onwards to my review!
-this story had me tearing up so much I was starting to question what was from me laughing so hard and what was hitting me in the feels. The balance between the emotional, tender moments and comedy were very well executed.
-I throughly enjoyed the complexity of the main and side characters in this book. It might not be forever everyone, as I feel like the author purposely wrote the characters to all be flawed in someway, however that was something that honestly made me like some of them even more. It made them more real, more human if you will. Though Caligo isn’t one, he’s just as layered as one. I liked the conversations that him and Rowan had about how complex humans are. That even though Caligo had spent a long time watching humans, he didn’t fully understand or know what they felt until he was with Rowan. Rowan was also such a well written, layered character. I understand why Caligo was drawn to him. Even going through so much, Rowan still tries to be a good person. Instead of letting Cal kill Tyler and Remy, he lets them suffer with the choices they made, even giving Remy a second chance . That alone, in my opinion shows he’s a good soul. I would also like to note that compared to the other books in this multi author series, this one to me had more focus placed on Rowan and the things he was dealing with then supernatural elements. I didn’t hate this, if anything, I really enjoyed it and I think having added more paranormal stuff might have taken away from what Rowan was experiencing. I loved this main couple, and how they navigated through everything together. For the most part, the two of them were very upfront, and spoke in detail about how they felt. I always appreciate when characters don’t drag misunderstandings so that was nice. Overall, really loved this book!! I’m definitely going to check out the authors other works at some point and highly recommend this one!
Rowan, has been spiraling since his mom’s murder. He’s been drinking, using drugs, partying, pushing away his friends and boyfriend. And with no witnesses or leads as to who killed her, he’s just been getting worse. His boyfriend, who’s had enough, decides to send him off to a rehab facility deep in the forest.
And that’s where he meets Caligo, our horned, red-eyed Shadow Daddy, who is IMMEDIATELY obsessed with Rowan. It is literally love at first sight for Caligo. And when Rowan finally gets to leave, Caligo follows him home. Caligo is possessive, protective, and absolutely devoted to Rowan. He’ll do ANYTHING to keep him safe, even if that means never letting Rowan go anywhere alone or getting rid of anyone who hurts him.
I actually really enjoyed the mystery surrounding Rowan’s mother’s murder. The plot was really good, and I loved finding out what actually happened.
My biggest issue was that I wanted MORE of Caligo. We got so much of Rowan’s POV, but I would’ve loved a few more chapters from Caligo’s perspective. He was always disappearing, and I kept wondering where he was going, what he was doing, and what exactly his purpose was in this world.
I loved how protective and devoted Caligo was, but I didn’t really feel the romance develop between them. Rowan fought him on so many things, and while I could absolutely understand why he felt safe with Caligo, I couldn’t really pinpoint when those feelings turned into love. They were together a lot, but I wanted more moments that actually showed them falling for each other.
The mystery definitely took up more of the story than than the romance but it was a REALLY good read! I loved the mystery. I just wanted a little more between them and more about Caligo.
What a weird and wild time this book was. I read this in two sittings because I had to get some sleep but otherwise I would have been sat for one sitting to read this. It was such a palate cleanser from the book I had just finished in the series. I love a good shadow daddy who knows how to wield them in such an appropriate way. Check your TW, but be excited to read how a shadow monster could be so caring in loving to sweet baby Rowan through what he goes through. The way that Caligo and Rowan meet is certainly under weird circumstances since Caligo was rooted to the rehab Rowan's piece of shit boyfriend dropped him off at in the middle of nowhere. I have to say that wearing a skin suit was quite the entertaining, if not a touch disturbing, development haha! That whole rehab stint was so wild, and I'm so glad Row met Laura. Cal decides to follow Rowan home from rehab and ends up helping him with a very messed up situation that Rowan had found out about in rehab and then was faced with a squatter when he got home and his POS ex had changed the locks on Rowan's home and wouldn't leave....until Cal nudges him along. The Relationship between Caligo and Rowan grew so quickly (as I am finding with all of these M&M books) but it was so nicely fleshed out, and I really enjoyed how Cal could...rearrange himself. The spicy scenes were hot AF, and it's what helped make this into a four star. It was just a great time, there were surprises around every corner, but the biggest surprise I had figured out the moment the situation presented itself. Do yourself a favor and read this!
I was given an arc copy of this in exchange for an honest review
This story has an unexpected type of monster that I absolutely loved! Caligo is a terrifying shadow monster w/ huge horns and glowing red eyes. The thing you think you see in the dark, but when you try to look harder, he disappears. I never would have considered this type of monster for a romance, but H.L. did an excellent job making Caligo scary, yet accessible for human needs… Well, at least for one human's needs. lol
Rowan has a considerable amount of development throughout the story, alongside Caligo, which really adds to the depth of the book as a whole. Rowan initially comes off as very shallow, but learning how to be with Cal and how to help Cal understand human thought processes really brings him out of the party boy headspace, even if he was in it to deal w/ grief.
There is some dubcon, and some use of monster parts in the spice, but it's not really anything crazy for a dark romance. It's also very hot!
There's not much on-page violence, either, and the angst is not there despite Rowan taking awhile to become truly attached to Cal. There's simply too much focus on teaching Cal, moving through Rowan's grief, and a mystery (but I don't want to spoil what the mystery is about, so I won't say more) for time and character headspace to devote to angst.
Overall, I very much enjoyed this book! It hit well and told an interesting story.
The next book in the Mayhem Manuscripts: season 2 Cryptids, did not disappoint. I'm convinced that every book in this series is going to be a banger. Noctis is a dark and sexy mm monster romance with hints of a murder mystery. Once I started the book i couldn't put it down. Even though Rowan was a hot mess, H.L. does a wonderful job of explaining his motivations for his destructive behaviors and uses that trauma to effortless advance the plot.
The banter is what makes this book a standout in the series. Rowan is a spitfire and sharp-tongued agent of sarcasm and chaos, using biting repartee as a defensive mechanism. H.L. knows how to write quick paced and often humorous dialogue. But it was Caligo and this very literal interpretations and dry murderous retorts that had me laughing out quite a bit. It was also oddly endearing witnessing Rowan trying to each the ancient shadow monster how to human. All their interactions were pure gold.
Even though the ending did get a little too scooby-doo (to neatly wrapped up) at the end I didn't mind it in this case. I was happy the author found a way to allow the MMCs to get their HEA. Everything from the starting location at a rehab center, to the side characters and the final twists were all extremely entertaining, only enhanced by H.L. Days fantastic and captivating writing style. Would confidently say Noctis is one not to be missed.

I enjoyed this book a lot, and it definitely gave me a good laugh a few times! The story started off really strong, and the storyline was intriguing. Although it didn’t unfold at all how I expected or guessed, it nonetheless had a very cute ending.
While Caligo and Rowan's meeting was on the unexpected side, their relationship definitely grew on me. I loved Caligo’s possessiveness and his absolute dedication to pleasing Rowan in any way possible. Rowan definitely deserved it after being put through the ringer! One aspect I thought was extremely cool was Caligo’s possession ability, especially his unexpected use of it.
Something I thought was so cute was how Laura and Rowan bonded over their shared experiences with Caligo. I didn’t expect her to stick around after learning that Caligo followed Rowan home, but she completely surprised me. I thought her character was hilarious at times!
Overall, I would definitely recommend this book. It had the perfect amount of hectic drama, spicy moments, and some really funny characters. Oh, and did I mention Caligo is a horned and tailed shadow daddy? 😏
