What an absolute triumph of a new release from Fanny Garstang! Having been completely hooked on this series from the very beginning, I went into this latest installment with sky-high expectations, and I am thrilled to say it did not disappoint in the slightest. Garstang has an unparalleled gift for expanding her fantastical world while keeping the emotional stakes profoundly intimate, pulling me right back into a narrative fabric woven with fierce loyalty, dark secrets, and breathtaking stakes.
From the moment we rejoin Scyth, her transition from a quiet village shrine keeper who speaks the ancient tongue of dragons to a captive thrust into the treacherous, high-contrast courts of Keytelia is utterly spellbinding. The sheer resilience of her character shines through every single page as she navigates a dangerous court teeming with powerful, violent, and intensely ambitious men. Garstang handles the theme of female agency beautifully, making Scyth a deeply relatable and powerful protagonist who refuses to let others dictate her fate, choosing instead to forge her own remarkable destiny alongside the High Priest of Keytel and the enigmatic Chieftain of the Dragon Riders.
The world-building in this book is richer and more immersive than ever before, perfectly capturing the vivid contrast between the claustrophobic opulence hidden behind the palace walls and the raw, untamed allure of the Valley of Dragons. The plot pulses with a brilliant narrative energy that flawlessly balances the darker, gripping undertones of bloody sacrifices and impending revenge with moments of pure magic. Of course, the absolute highlights for me remain the incredible dragons themselves, who are brought to life with a marvelous blend of lethal majesty and unforgettable, sharp-witted sass that cuts right through the tension.
It is rare for a series to maintain this level of momentum, but this book delivers the perfect cocktail of high-stakes political intrigue, mythic lore, and rich character growth. It left me absolutely breathless and already desperately longing to see how these cards of vengeance will fall in the next chapter. If you haven't dove into this spectacular world yet, you are truly missing out on one of the finest fantasy journeys out there.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I've loved this series from the very first book and when Fanny told me she was releasing an origin story, I just couldn't wait to read it!

Fanny does a great job of creating characters that constantly evolve and grow, which makes me so invested in their journeys. There were definitely moments that I found emotional and my heart broke for Scyth!

The pacing was good and I just wanted to know what was going to happen next, so I couldn't put the book down 😂.

I love how the dragons have their own personalities/voices and how connected they are to the politics and power in this world.

There was just so much I loved about this book and I definitely recommend reading the whole series.

This is a great origins story for the Daughters of Scyth and I have been so desperate to learn more about where they came from. This is exactly the book I have been waiting for because Scyth is a fantastic main character - strong willed and determined to exact her revenge and free the women enslaved in the Nejus’ harem.

The whole world in these stories are rich and feel like they are straight out of the history books. I love how Gods and belief plays such an important part in these stories and the dragons are fascinating characters themselves - each with their own distinctive voices and personalities.
