In the aftermath of betrayal and death, Edith is handed a secret that will shatter–or save–all Aliis-kind. Edith is unmoored. And more dangerous than ever.
With no one to trust, she buries herself in a new case; an understudy is brutally murdered at the Faerie Ring Theatre. But her assigned guard, Julian Roswick watches her closely. He suspects the last Death Witch is still hiding a secret, and the closer they work together, the harder it is to deny the pull between them.
Worse, Edith wants to trust him. But forces are closing in. Humans fear the existence of a Death Witch, and even those who were once allies question whether her existence might upset the fragile balance.
As the threads of the Weaver’s Loom tighten around her, and her arrest is imminent, Edith vanishes. She realises too late–she was never in control.
Jessi writes fantasy filled with dangerous magic, mythic worldbuilding, and complex women. Her stories range from gaslamp historical fantasy set among witches and foggy London streets to epic imagined worlds where prophecy and power reign.
She is drawn to antagonists who are neither right nor wrong and heroines who are strong in unique ways.
When I read The Weaver’s Loom a few months ago, I said it was one of those exciting debuts that showed a ton of promise, and holy hell, did Jessi St. John deliver on every bit of that potential here in The Weaver’s Tapestry. This sequel feels bigger, darker, bolder, and, yes, considerably sexier, and it turned out to be everything I did not know I wanted and needed from this dark witchy gaslamp murder mystery tale.
After the intriguing cliffhanger at the end of The Weaver’s Loom, I was desperate to see the fallout from all those painful events and major revelations, so I loved how The Weaver’s Tapestry immediately threw us into the emotional turmoil. Our beloved last Death Witch, Edith, is dealing with grief, betrayal, political schemes, ancient secrets, and the small matter of potentially having the fate of all Aliis-kind hanging over her head, so naturally, she handles this by throwing herself into a new murder investigation at the Faerie Ring Theatre, because investigating a brutal murder is obviously preferable to processing one's feelings.
Unfortunately for her (but very fortunately for me), she is now stuck with her assigned guard, Julian Roswick, and the two of them absolutely cannot deny the pull between them despite their distrust. And if that does not tell you everything you need to know, let me assure you that the tension in The Weaver’s Tapestry is HIGH. Political tension, emotional tension, romantic tension... this book has so much tension that I was beginning to feel like it would kill me before I reached the final page, and I loved it for that.
From the very first page, I was just completely reimmersed in this darkly alluring alternate version of 1890s London, and whereas I found the pacing in book one to be a little clunky at times, The Weaver’s Tapestry was smooth sailing all the way through. I do have to admit that there is still some inexplicable little barrier that keeps me from feeling as emotionally connected to these characters as I want to be, but I was definitely much more invested this time around than I was in book one. Every single thread of the story is woven together so beautifully, and I thought the balance between plot progression and character and relationship development was genuinely excellent.
Watching Edith battle her inner demons as she navigates grief, betrayal, and all these newfound burdens made me respect and admire her even more than I already did, which is saying a lot. I loved seeing her lean further into her abilities without suddenly becoming invincible, while also learning to rely on the other morally messy people around her a little more. Like, my babe has spent an awful lot of time carrying the weight of the world while pretending she is perfectly capable of doing so, and I was very pleased to see her realise that perhaps, just perhaps, she should not have to do everything alone. Revolutionary concept, someone alert Victorian society.
But honestly, the thing that truly made The Weaver’s Tapestry so dangerously addictive for me was the romance, because THIS is how you do a good slow burn. Yes, the world-building is impressive, and the mystery is compelling, and the plot is captivating, but it was the romantic tension between Edith and Roswick that truly had me in a chokehold. Their banter and yearning were absolutely delicious, and I loved that St. John made us wait so long for their feelings to finally be shared because that long wait only made it more satisfying when they finally broke and gave in. Satisfying and hot, hella hot… I was not prepared *clutches pearls*.
Do not worry if romance is not really your thing, though, because the best part is that it never takes over the main plot. I was so impressed with how St. John manages to give us a whole new murder mystery to lose ourselves in with Edith while also continuing to build the overarching narrative surrounding the Death Witch's role in this universe. The magical lore and history are expanded in such clever ways through both Edith and the side characters (especially Willa!!) with all their different magical backgrounds and powers, and I am beyond excited to see how every single piece of this puzzle is eventually going to fall into place. Like, I do not have Edith's mystery-solving skills, unfortunately, so I am left here with my questions, my theories, and truly unreasonable levels of curiosity.
Safe to say, there is absolutely zero second-book syndrome to be found in The Weaver’s Tapestry. I devoured this in two days, and the only reason I did not finish it in one day is because I was having such a great time that I did not want it to be over already. The Last Death Witch series is mysterious, fresh, exciting, ambitious, and so darkly fun, and I have a feeling it is going to rise into favourite status if things continue to progress this way.
Thank you to the author for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review, all opinions are my own. The Weaver's Tapestery is scheduled for release on August 15,2026.
I’m unsure how to review this book without sounding like a small child recounting every minute of their favorite Minecraft video. I freaking loved The Weaver's Tapestry. I think you should buy the book now, and I am trying to keep this spoiler-free.
So instead I wanted to share my thoughts while reading, though I will hold myself back from doing an old school gif-filled review: - Practicing death magic - hell yeah! - Damn…Jessi really wrote a swoon-worthy male lead with Roswick. Also, I think Mel was 100% right that if this is ever a movie or TV show, Tom Ellis would be perfect for the role. - Ew…Kensington is back. I don't like him. - Alina is so awesome. - This book is freaking awesome. - Roswick is down bad -> "Like a medieval castle on the brink of ruin, he found himself checking his foundation for cracks when she was near him." - Yay! Death! Like, the personification. I'm not celebrating someone dying. - Oh, a murder mystery! - Magical coroner…color me intrigued - Blazar is back! I love a visit to the Brighton sisters' house.
Okay, looking at the rest of my reading notes, things would get too spoiler-y if I continue sharing my thoughts. In The Weaver's Tapestry, we see Edith deal with the consequences of the world finding out that she is a death witch, unlock a new mystery, and see the slow-burn romance quickly catch fire.
The Last Death Witch is an amazing series, and I cannot wait for book 3!
--- I received an advance copy of this book at no charge. This is my honest, voluntary review.
Omg what a storyline this is amazing and just gets more fantastic with every addition, the world-building and characters are so good and the character development is just perfect.
It’s definitely one of my Top 5 books of the year, I can’t wait for whats next, and this one’s not release, this is a second book and it’s exceeded all my expectations, I wasn’t ready for this level of writing, and storytelling.
The author is a great writer to keep an eye on for future books, I definitely will be. I’ll also recommend him to read by everyone.
Easy five-star book for me and well done Jesse St for this wonderful book and I hope to arc for you again.
The Weaver’s Tapestry did not disappoint! So many new revelations in this book and a new string of mysteries.
I am really excited to see how the story progresses for Edith. Between both books, so many choices were essentially forced upon her and you see a little glimpse of her finally having the freedom to make a choice to let her guard down.
And Roswick…you will learn about his backstory and just love him more in this book! I’m a little nervous about some characters in the next book and what they might have in store for Edith….BUT love her group of people supporting her.
Jessi St. John has made her mark with the second book of her Death Witch series, The Weaver's Tapestry. This is more than a five-star read, but alas. I live in a five-star world. Here we go...
The first book (The Weaver's Loom, https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...) left our undaunted heroine Edith Vale (fka Ashton) with betrayals, newly revealed power, and an impossible choice in which all Aliis life and coexistence with humankind hang in the balance. The stakes are high, and Jessi treats it with perfect urgency and nuance.
The pacing of this novel-- the action that hits us at the beginning of the story all the way to the end -- reminded me of those master hardboiled detective novels of the 40s, such as Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler. Jessi keeps giving us corpses to keep the adrenaline up while also dropping meaningful hints to keep our appetites for the resolution sharp. I really appreciate the fact that at no point did I feel like she was trying to pull the wool over our eyes-- or as Chandler himself so aptly described, putting the mystery plot into the palm of God. No, Jessi takes on a real murder mystery and the cookie crumbs do in fact lead to a very satisfying resolution. With a TERRIFIC, mind-bending red herring to boot!
In this book, Jessi truly shows her mastery at maintaining perfect tension and nuanced banter between Edith Vale and Julian Roswick. It was the perfect balance of "OH MY GOSH CAN THEY PLEASE JUST DO IT ALREADY?!" and "BUT NO, THIS TENSION IS TOO DELICIOUS, MAKE IT LAST!" My apologies for the caps, folks, but I was actually screaming these sentences out loud every time Edith and Julian were in close proximity. It is one of the most delicious dynamics I have ever read in a fantasy novel.
One of the things I love most about Jessi's writing is that she rewards readers who pay attention to the details. There are lots of those nuggets throughout the novel; stay sharp, and you will be rewarded.
Finally, the larger story of the Death Witch and her role in this universe is very cleverly brought around full circle with key moments with the Weaver. Willa's role in the universe is starting to expand, but it is very appropriately hinted at so not to distract from the main plot lines in this book. At the end of the book, while one of the plots has been resolved, others are ramping up and gaining scope and importance, and we are left with watering mouths for the third book.
Highly recommend this book after reading the first one, The Weaver's Loom. These are very much a series and not standalone.
Book one was amazing, and this book was even better. This is a series that’s full of magic, mystery, and murders, and an FMC who learns to accept her powers.
We follow Edith, the last death witch after the world finds out about her after she’s been trying to hide her identity for her entire life. A string of murders in London calls for Edith’s expertise as a detective to solve these killings. However, this is made difficult as people are wary of having a death witch back amongst them and are tying the deaths to her. Meanwhile, Edith is also struggling to make an impossible choice that The Weaver has put on her: whether or not to finish the weaver’s tapestry and bring immortality back to Aliis-kind. Doing so will break a long standing treaty made with the humans to allow them to live in peace together. While this is all happening, something much bigger is brewing, and Edith is in the middle of it all.
Book one very much focused on Edith trying to hide her powers and gave us a really good introduction into this magical world and how the magic system works. It largely focused on the magic, murder, and mystery aspects. Book 2 continues this but we also see romance blossoming for our FMC and MMC. I absolutely ADORED Julian in this book. I must admit, in book 1, I was on the fence about him, His cold, emotionless demeanor just wasn’t doing it for me. But OH MY did I do a 180 in this book. He’s SUCH an understanding character and literally someone who would do anything to protect the one he loves. When he found out about the tapestry, instead of staying mad at her, he thought about the reasons she may have hid it from her and realized there must be an explanation and he actually used COMMON SENSE 🎉👏. I cannot count the number of times I’ve read about characters who seem to possess none of that quality. Instead of getting angry at her for keeping a secret from him, he apologized that he didn’t make her feel that it was sage for her to tell him 🥹
The stakes in this book was also much higher compared to book one. And OMG, that twist at the end?? ALSO, I can’t believe the entire time Jessi distracted us with murder cases while a whole more sinister plot was brewing right under our noses! Literally criminal.
If you love a world with an intricate magic system, with characters that understand themselves and who they are, and an epically powerful FMC, this book is for you!!
Edith thought she was done keeping secrets, but another big secret is forced upon her. One that can change everything for her kind. When she is tasked to study the brutal murder of an understudy at a theater, she uncovers something horrible. Something that will upset the natural balance of her world. For those of you who have read Onyx Storm, do you remember how you felt when you flipped the last page? The utter disbelieve that this was it? Left hanging by a thread? That is exactly how I felt after flipping the last page on The Weaver's Tapestry. Jessi, you can't possibly do this to me! I literally had goosebumps all over, jaw on the floor and I was gasping. Apart from the brilliant ending, this is an amazing book. You know how often second books in a series suffer from middle book syndrome, you won't find that here. Because there is a new murder, or murders, to solve, the story keeps you engaged. And all the extra developments adding to the continues storyline coming from The Weaver's Loom, makes this a great read. And the author really has a talent for setting a scene, the goth vibes are fantastic. There is a lovely romance budding in Edith's life and I was totally here for it. I don't want to spoiler who the love interest is, but he is delicious ok? The tension was mouth watering and the way he is annoyed that he likes her, because he wants to be in control of his feelings and she is breaking through his shell? Trust me, delicious! What I also really loved is how Willa is slowly becoming a more important character. I am so interested in her, in her magic and in what her role will be going forward. There is definitely a bigger story left to tell about her and the Weaver. The magic is something that stood out to me in this book. The way Death swirls around Edith, Roswick's elemental magic, Blackstone's intuition, Willa's ominous visions, the Weaver's riddles, the addition of alchemy. I could not get enough and with that ending.....what more do you have in store for us Jessi? If you weren't convinced already to pick up The Weaver's Loom and the Weaver's Tapestry, I urge you to do it! You won't be disappointed!
The Weaver's Tapestry by Jessi St John is a historical fantasy and the second book in the Last Death Witch series. As soon as I started reading, I was mesmerised by the words on the page. Jessi St John's writing drew me into the story as though I were an actual character, experiencing every emotion and witnessing every event firsthand. Her descriptions were vivid, the conversations felt natural and authentic, and the plot completely captivated me from beginning to end. The story beautifully combined romance, heartache, mystery, humour, and so much more, all woven together like an intricate tapestry. Every element felt purposeful, creating a rich and immersive world that I never wanted to leave. Jessi's command of storytelling and pacing kept me turning the pages, always eager to discover what would happen next. Even readers who don't usually pick up fantasy novels could find themselves falling in love with this story because the characters and emotions felt so relatable. Each chapter was told from a different point of view, which gave me a much deeper understanding of both the characters and the unfolding events. As the story built towards its conclusion, I could feel the tension steadily increasing, making the emotional moments even more powerful and unforgettable. Although Edith remained my favourite character, Roswick was a very close second. He was wonderfully complex, full of depth, emotion, flaws, and vulnerability. Watching his journey of feeling lost before ultimately finding himself was one of the most rewarding parts of the novel. Overall, The Weaver's Tapestry was a beautifully written and emotionally rich historical fantasy that completely immersed me in its world. With unforgettable characters, exceptional storytelling, and a perfect balance of emotion and intrigue, it left me eagerly anticipating if there will be a next instalment in the Last Death Witch series.
Review of an advanced copy received from the author.
The author has once again delivered a fantastic gothic murder mystery and I just couldn’t stop reading. I Love it.
In the first book, we get to know all the characters through multiple POVs. So in this book you already know most of them and you can focus more on the story. But still continue to get more backstory of the characters. And if book one was amazing this is EVEN better. I love the book.
I loved watching Edith slowly develop her powers and her connection to one of her detective partner is such a good slow burn romance. I think there’s just the perfect level of spice in the book. It leaves something to the imagination. And he is definitely falling first and hard. He is “A practical man, few with words, cold and clinical with most people. Except for her.”
We follow Edith a death witch, Coren a seeker elf and Julian a witch who investigate mysterious murder in the streets of London. But in this story, we also get to know Death a little more. He was my favorite character in book one and he continues to be my favorite in this book.
"Death? Mmmm. What a delicious place for a murder, came his reply. Do try to stay on task. Tell me if anyone we meet is marked. We'll know who to look at closer. Death had tought her that people who had taken a life had marked souls. It was a help in her line of work"
The author continues to deliver supernatural creatures, witches, shifters, alchemists, elfs, fairies along with a rich magical system, the First Council, mortality spells, mystery and of course murder. All set in victorian the dark foggy London.
This book just gave me everything and it absolutly touched all my emotions. I highly recommend everyone to read this series.
Thank you Jessie ST John from the bottom of my heart for letting me be part of your street team and for giving me the opportunity to ARC read your books. Looking forward for the next book. I give my honest review freely.
Ok guys. I finished this book days ago! I have had to sit with my feelings about this book before any words could be formed but i will try my best.
First of all, 👏👏👏👏 bravo to the author! If you thought book one was good, this book has far surpassed it in my opinion. Book one lay the foundations, book one introduced you to the magic, the characters, the heart of the story. Book two? Well, book two is the grit, the bones, the soul! Actually, it took my soul!!! Jessi St John owns me now! Whatever she does from this point forward, i will roll out the red carpet for her!
Grief stricken from the events of book one, Edith throws herself into her work (because obviously dealing with emotions in a healthy way is for losers!!!) and another murder mystery to unravel. With her new shadow Julian at her side, tensions run high, emotions are beginning to burst over the top and we are all hanging on with bated breath for the moment everything explodes. The politics, the secrets, the schemes, the grief, its like one big pressure pot! At what point does it all become too much!
I absolutely adore the mix of victorian England with this supernatural twist. The magic is so unique and makes for an incredible read. While combining historical accuracy with a history of magic, it is such an addictive read and jessi has done such a good job of writing this without it appearing forced or taking from the plot.
As with book one, the plot is the main character here! This is listed as a slow burn but honestly, i would categorise it as a fantasy book, with romantic elements. The slow relationship building feels natural and not part of the main premise of the story!
Overall, this book was a 10/10 for me! I will drop everything for this author from this day forward!
Seriously, why are you still reading reviews?? RUN!!!! Go read the book!!
Jessi St. John can really write a masterpiece because I thought The Weaver’s Loom was fantastic, but The Weaver’s Tapestry truly took it a step further. This is like the best Agatha Christie novel had a baby with Penny Dreadful and I CANNOT GET ENOUGH
I’m absolutely loving Edith growing into her power while trying to carry the weight of everything she’s lost. She’s struggling, she’s questioning herself, she’s terrified of the choices sitting in front of her, and somehow she still keeps putting one foot in front of the other. Watching her learn to control her magic instead of letting it control her was honestly one of my favourite parts.
And Roswick. ROSWICK. I was a fan from the first moment he was mentioned and I am SO pleased to report that I was right about this man. The way he is constantly hovering, protecting, glaring at anyone who gets too close and pretending this is all just duty? Sir. Please. We all see you. 👀
But the mystery! The way everything starts tying back into the first book and slowly reveals this much bigger, much more sinister overarching plot had me completely hooked. Our Lady of St. James deserves a standing ovation because WHAT is she doing with this plot?!
This whole ordeal... I mean, BOOK... is darker, grittier and somehow even more atmospheric than the first. There is this constant feeling that some cataclysmic shift is coming. The tension just keeps building and building until it feels like it is CHOKING YOU.
And that ENDING?!
WHAT. WAS. THAT, JESSI?!
How exactly am I supposed to wait for the next book now?! Why are you doing this to us... AGAIN?!
I need answers. I need the next book. I need Roswick. I need to know what the Weaver has planned.
Basically, I am unwell. And I blame Jessi St. John.
I received an advance reader copy from the author and am sharing my honest review.
You know the first book, The Weaver's Loom was amazing, a great book and I loved it!!! But this!? This was incredibly well written, amazing storytelling and it was quite frankly phenomenal!!!! If more stars could be put here, I would have given it more!!
Edith is, as always, trying to figure out the latest murder mysteries and how they all connect.
Not only is this a great like murder mystery detective kinda book all on it's own, but put in the Death Witch and all the different magics and magical people and you have this masterpiece!
You get more spice in the book but not so much. It will still be a mystery fantasy book with a subplot of romance. And it's also just weaved into the story in such a good way. Jessi is a bit of an expert weaver herself, a weaver of words I'd say!
There were several plot twists for me also and the last one I really did not see or have any kind of inklinasjon of at all! I was shocked!!
I hope that we see Edith in the next book to embrase what she is even more and not hold anything back! Edith is already a badass, but if she unleashes herself I don't know what kind of things she can do. Bit I know, she will be a badass ++ while doing it!
I also liked that we see a more human and soft side to Julian and learn more about him and his past. There's so much layera to wvwey character that I can't wait to learn even more in the next book!
I am so excited for what's to come due to how this ended and I am now frustrated to have read it early because I have to wait longer! 😅 The backside to ARC reading I guess 😅😊
Thank you Jessi for the gifted eARC!
I left my review voluntary 😊
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
🧵Weaver help me… this was a wonderful 2nd book! 😍 I just love Jessi’s writing and voice…it’s really brings you in and is a wonderful escape! 🫶🏼 I loved seeing Edith’s story continuing on and her leaning more into her power 💥 “Double damn.”— you get *some* answers from Book 1 but are left with about the same if not more questions… 🤭😉 true gas lamp mystery with a touch more romance 💝 I canNOT wait for Book 3!! 💜✨ You absolutely add this to your TBR after you have finished Book 1! 🤗
A few/many of my favorite quotes…
✨ “Lions act without thought because they know little of fear. A fox, by virtue of it size, uses its wits. This was always a job for a fox, Edith.” “You can remain a pawn, letting the world happen around you, or you can make the choices of a queen. Make the move that will change the world.”
🌷 “The flowers curtsied, their delicate stems bowed by the breeze. It was spring come to life.” “The threads of colour caressed her, then dissipated, like a spring shower, out into the world.”
💫 “Little witch.” “Edith was like that box: unorthodox and full of secrets. The more he studied her, the more consumed he became.” “…she wasn’t helpless now…she was a force, a storm, a gale. She was the he monster in the night. She would be their nightmare made flesh.”
🔥”Quoting the Bible just makes you a madman trying to justify madness.”
🧶 “All living things are threads I bring together into an orchestra of sound — a cacophony of chaos.” “I keep them taut, for without tension nothing holds; a weave cannot be born without a skeleton. A soul cannot thrive without a home.”
OMG WHAT DID I JUST READ?! Just like book one, The Weavers Loom, Jessi St. John knocked The Weavers Tapestry OUT OF THE PARK and far exceeded my expectations! If I could give more than 5 stars, I would absolutely do just that.
There are just so many things I loved about this book. From the developing relationship between Edith and Julien, which was pure FIRE, to the twists and turns Jessi St. John created within this incredible story, and everything in between.
With most books I read, I like to make little predictions to myself on what I think might happen, and she kept me on my toes the entire time. If you thought book one was good, wait until you read this one - its theme is even darker, sexier, and bolder - everything you didn’t know you needed in this witchy gaslamp murder mystery. And I’m not usually one for murder mysteries! Honestly, this series keeps getting better and better.
Right out of the gate, The Weavers Tapestry dives right back into where The Weavers Loom left off, and you’re immediately thrown into the thick of it. Edith is no longer in hiding as the last death witch, and she’s now the heir to the First Witch. Just when she thought she didn’t have to keep any more secrets, another is thrust upon her that affects all Aliis. All while she begins investigating a new murder, just months after her world was upended. As she delves deeper into the case, more bodies turn up, and she begins to uncover secrets that others don’t want out.
Needless to say, Jessi is a freaking genius, and I am so grateful to get to experience her books as an ARC reader and Street Team member!
I cannot wait to see what book three has in store!!
Is it possible to love a sequel just a little more than the first book? Absolutely, because The Weaver’s Tapestry completely captured my heart.
Picking up after the betrayals and revelations of The Weaver’s Loom, Edith’s journey as the last Death Witch becomes even more compelling. I loved watching her navigate new betrayals, embrace the full extent of her magic, and wield it with greater confidence and intelligence. She remains such a beautifully complex character, and being beside her as she grows into her power was one of my favorite parts of this story.
Once again, Jessi St. John’s poetic prose is as lyrical and enchanting as ever. The cinematic worldbuilding transported me straight into its Victorian gothic London setting, while the unfolding mystery kept me completely invested. Everything I loved about the first book: the atmosphere, magic, intrigue, and exquisite storytelling, felt even richer here.
And Edith and Julian? Exactly what my heart needed. Their relationship developed so naturally, and the intimate scenes were written with such grace and sensuality that they enhanced their connection without ever distracting from the story.
I am completely enamored with this series; its writing, mystery, characters, romance, and hauntingly beautiful world. I couldn’t be happier with how Edith’s story is progressing, and I already cannot wait for book three. An exquisite five star sequel!!!
A heartfelt thank you to Jessi St. John for allowing me to continue Edith’s journey through this hauntingly beautiful world. I’m completely enamored with these characters and already longing for book three.
Thank you, Jessi St. John, for the gifted e-ARC! All thoughts and opinions are my own!
This was such a great follow-up to The Weaver’s Loom (book 1). This is a gaslamp fantasy with more romance in the second book. I liked this one even better than the first book, and it could be because of the relationships we have developed.
Not only do we have all kinds of magical elements, but there’s a lot of political intrigue. Edith has no idea who she can trust or what to do. She literally has her whole kind on her shoulders, causing a lot of upheaval. The mystery was woven throughout, and I loved it. I couldn’t stop reading because I had to know what happened next. I will admit, I did see some of the twists coming, but I’m very good at figuring those things out. It didn’t take away my enjoyment at all. The pacing was great, and she was able to weave all these elements easily. I love the world and magic she’s created. This book felt cozy, and it could be because I read a large chunk of this on a stormy day.
The characters in this book have a lot of depth. I loved how we got a lot more backstory and learned more about several of them in this book. One of my favorite things about this whole book was her timing of POV changes. We have multiple POV changes throughout, but it’s all done at the perfect time. We have little glimpses into other characters and what they are thinking, but the bulk of the book is still told mainly in Edith’s voice. The romance is more of a subplot in the series. It’s there (much more in this book) but very subtle. There are a few steamy moments though!
Overall, I loved this and couldn’t put it down. I thought the mood and atmosphere were very addictive. Jessi St. John has created a mystery and still kept true to the overarching plot. I loved how we got more backstory from the characters, and I can’t wait to see the decisions in this book unfold in the next one!
Thank you to the author for providing me with an eARC in exchange for my honest review.
Damn, Jessi did it again. Just like with the Last Death Witch book 1, 'the Weaver's Loom', book 2 had me hooked from page 1.
Edith is faced with politics, learning more about her powers ánd Death, grief, a new murder mystery, having to keep another dangerous secret, a difficult choice she has to make... and the tension between her and Roswick.
I love the mystery surrounding it all. Who is to be trusted? Who is the true bad guy? Who is out there on a killing spree? Who or what is the real danger here? It just keeps you invested in the story, I could hardly put it down.
Edith seems to have lost some of her innocence and is clearly struggling with her grief. It all feels so raw and real, and the development she goes through as a character is very strong. The romance subplot is more important than it was in the first book, and there is even a little bit of spice. All I could think about this was "Yesss Edith, you go girl!" haha.
I was very glad to get some more insight into certain characters, such as Roswick, but also Death. The moments with the kids (Edith's wards) were really touching and I loved it so much to have them a bit more included.
Can't stop loving Coren, I want him to be my bestie. Same with Alina.
The ending was sublime, the only downside was that I wanted to keep reading, but I guess I'll just have to wait for book 3.
If you liked 'the Weaver's Loom', there is no chance you would not want to pick this one up as well! (And if you haven't read TWL yet, I suggest you do so!)
Do I now again have a deep need to be a witch in 1890's England, yes yes I do!
I am obsessed with the world Jessi created. I love book one so much but book two more than delivered so I will try and review it but its hard because firstly I must avoid spoilers from both books but secondly I realize I cant endlessly yap about how much I love everything.
The storyline moves at the perfect pace, the slow burn love is delicious and the twist and turns kept me up way too late because I needed to know what happens. Jessi has an amazing writing style that sucks you into the world and although it is written in a 3rd person i as reader still felt and connected with every emotion from the characters and man did they really did go through it all. We follow Edith as she navigates a new secret that can change the world for both humans and witches all while trying to solve a new murder case or two at the local Faerie Theatre.
While there is amazing character growth for the favorites there was also room for redemption for a few of the not so favorite characters trom book one.
I love the love story and the development of the relationship- you know its good when you want them to kiss already but also not yet because the tension is chef kiss and while the romance is a bit more prominent in book two its def second to the plot and story which I love.
Again the side characters are all equally important and I cant wait to see what bigger roles they will play in the next book! Special shout out to Death he is one of my favorites
Wow. Incredible book!! This is one of those times that I actually like the second book even more than the first…and I loved the first! This book continues the story of Edith Vale, the last known Death Witch. The way that Jessi writes this story is so descriptive and immersive, you can’t help but just get sucked into it! I really enjoyed the budding romance between Edith and [redacted]. Haha, no spoilers for any of the books from me! This book does have spice, I’d rate it 2/5 🌶️🌶️ but it’s not overly descriptive and is mostly fade to black. If you enjoy a good mystery and a witchy romantasy that is growing an amazing found family cast, then you need to read these books! This is book two. Book one is The Weaver’s Loom and you need to start there. I highly recommend them!! I can’t get enough and I cannot wait for the next book!! Thank you to the author for the eARC. This voluntary review is my honest thoughts and opinions about the book. I think you’ll love this book if you enjoy a witchy romantasy with a gaslamp vibe. A good murder mystery with incredible found family.
“Power comes in many forms, and faith is one of those.”
“All things have a price, child. I am at peace with mine.”
“…I’ve wanted to throttle you since the day I met you,” she whispered, and he reared back, startled. “But I suppose the two feelings are not mutually exclusive.”
“Lions act without thought because they know little of fear. A fox, by virtue of its size, uses its wits. This was always a job for a fox, Edith.”
“You came for me,” she whispered. “I’ll always come for you.”
I genuinely didn’t think this series could top the first book… but somehow it did.
The Weaver’s Tapestry pulled me even deeper into this world, and by the final page I was desperate for book three.
Watching Edith’s journey has been one of my favourite parts of this series. The woman she has become compared to where she started is incredible. She’s grown into such a badass while never losing the heart that makes you root for her every step of the way.
And Roswick… ❤️
He chuckled, then tangled his fingers through her hair. “You are everything you are meant to be, Edith Vale.” She tucked that into her heart, into a secret, safe place, to never forget those words.
That moment completely melted me. Their romance is so wonderfully sweet, and after everything they’ve been through, seeing them finally together felt so rewarding.
The twists kept catching me off guard, the stakes felt even higher than in book one, and I absolutely loved how this instalment completely changed my perspective on Arabella. I came away with so much more respect for Coren too…
…and somehow, against all odds, I don’t even hate creepy Kensington anymore. I honestly didn’t think that was possible. ❤️
This sequel raises the bar in every way. The characters continue to grow, the world becomes richer, and now I’m completely invested in seeing where this story goes next.
After the events of the first book, Edith has to deal with the aftermath. Accepting the loss, embracing her new role, keeping her powers a secret for as long as possible, and suddenly becoming the focus of multiple groups with different intentions does not make things any easier. Who can she trust, and who can she tell the truth?
I enjoyed the first book in the series a lot and can confirm that the second book builds on everything I appreciated about it. I like knowing what is actually going on, and the world-building is nuanced without ever making me feel lost or confused. This is one of the things I have to give credit where it is due. Edith is such a likeable character. She learned early in life to keep certain things to herself, and when one of her decisions leads to significant consequences, not everyone is happy about it.
Some consider her powers dangerous (as a simple human, I can understand that perspective), while others want to maintain the status quo. She has certainly made a lot of people feel uncomfortable. In the middle of all that, she is still doing what she does best and has to investigate a series of murders that are more connected than she originally thought. This book grew on premise of book one and I am looking forward for what's to come.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Our beloved Edith is back and further ensconced in political intrigue, a series of new murders, and a looming deadline that could mean huge repercussions for those that have magic.
Book two in this incredible gaslamp fantasy series, and now we get to see a blooming romance (hopefully cross all your fingers and toes) come to fruition.
I LOVE Jessi’s writing. It’s so immersive and tension filled, and as much as I love plot puzzles and being right in my guesses, I really appreciate the fact that I never fully guess where this story is going. The way the characters are written, the deeply rich language used to describe this world is just my favorite. Give me all of the waistcoats and proper society nonsense, I am here for it.
Second books usually feel middling… like an author is trying to bring us to a third book conclusion with a lot of drawn out story plots that don’t feel conclusive… this series does not do that. The Weaver’s Tapestry is an outstanding book all on its own. Full of mystery and intrigue, you are still left wondering who to trust and who has ulterior motives.
I will happily read anything that Jessi writes. She is so exceptional at her craft, and deserves all of the accolades. Easiest five stars ever.
"All living things are threads I bring together into an orchestra of sound - a cacophony of chaos."
This was another hit for me! I absolutely loved The Weaver's Loom and this one was amazing too! 🤩
My mind was on one track and Jessi's was on another. I totally couldn't see what was coming and I was there for it!! The way she can craft a mystery loaded with so many other plots is such a skill.
Julian - ooh, he's such a fun character. He's swoony but complicated and I'm never sure if I really should trust him or not. 👀
Edith is such a great character. The Last Death Witch title comes with a lot of responsibility. Add on the weaver's tapestry, that's a whole different level - if you gave that to just anyone, the world could completely fall apart.
Edith's handling of it is so laudable, but I love her wanting to live in her Inspector hat more than anything else.
The intrigue, the mystery - all of my failed guesses!! It just pulled me in so hard every time and I was shocked in the best way.
Death! Wow. 🤯 No words. 👏
This book is a bit spicy. 🌶️
You should really read this within the series itself, so start with The Weaver's Loom (A-Mazing!) and then move on to this one.
I was so excited to get back into this world, and The Weaver’s Tapestry did not disappoint.
It picks up shortly after the end of book one, so we are thrown right back into the aftermath, the tension, and all the unanswered questions. I loved how this sequel expanded the magic and gave us more insight into how everything works. The world feels bigger, deeper, and even more interesting now.
The romantic tension that had been building finally comes to a head, and honestly, it was worth the wait. The tension in this series is so good because it never feels forced. It simmers, it builds, and then it gives you exactly enough to make you want more.
And the secrets. Just when I thought we had uncovered most of them, this book pulled back another layer. There is so much more going on than I expected, and I loved trying to piece it all together.
A decision is made that has me very interested in what the consequences will be.
Thank you to the author for sending me an early copy to read. All opinions are my own.
I loved The Weavers Loom and after the cliffhanger ending, I couldn't wait to get my hands on this one!
Edith was once again hot on the trail of a murderer after a body is discovered at the theatre. Still mourning the loss of Ben and the fallout that came from Coren's revelations, Edith is begrudgingly left with a overprotective Julian to assist her. Meanwhile she is still mulling over the Tapestry and the choice she has to make. I instantly settled into the story, enjoying the familiarity and comfort that comes from being in a world with characters you know and love. We learn a lot more about Julian in this one and see the person behind the Council worker. I have to admit, I was always team Coren in book one, but Julian has managed to win me over this time! Although not as much of a cliffhanger ending, there was more than enough questions unanswered that will leave readers wanting to reach for book three for answers (when it's out)! This book was full of mystery and revelations, the took on unexpected turns that kept me turning the pages even as my eyes were fighting sleep.
I have been looking forward to this book since I finished the first one, and it did not disappoint. I love being part of the ARC team for this series and getting to read it ahead of time. I am giving my honest review. Edith has been outed as the last Death Witch, no longer able to hide who she is. She is grieving the loss of her best friend while trying to navigate her new life with all the responsibilities and judgements that come along with it. On top of that she has been given a HUGE decision to make that can change so many things for the Aliis. Jessi is so good at immersing us into London with her descriptions. Dark, broody, full of fog and mystery. Everything is shrouded in mystery and intrigue, and the way it is all written keeps us on our toes wondering what is coming next. I love seeing Edith beginning to gain her confidence and coming into her power. I can't wait to see how strong she is in the next book. I also absolutely love the blooming relationship between her and Julian. It is so real, them working through the issues of life and trust, and finding support with each other. So excited for the next one.
Put me down as a permanent member of the Jessi St John fan club!! The first book in this series was one of my top reads of the year to date. This sequel? Even better. I mean, they are both fantastic, so it’s hard to compare, but I can unequivocally recommend these to you.
This is a gaslamp fantasy with a little more romance in the second book (and boy, were we all feral for it!). Readers had been hoping that this second book would see Edith and Julian accept their impeccable chemistry, and it did not disappoint.
Having said that, this book (and series) does not rely on romance to make it memorable. This is the most outstanding writing of fantasy mystery I’ve read in recent memory. The world building, and particularly the unique magic system, truly make this book stand out. Not once did I feel confused or pulled out of the story. The pacing was perfect and nothing in the story felt out of sync. The vibes and gothic setting are immersive and you will never want to leave the world.
Please. Please, read this series! You will not regret it.
Jessi St. John has done it again. I am completely floored. If I am being honest, I didn’t know what to expect going into book two, but she has exceeded my expectations tenfold. If you love One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig and Heartless Hunter by Kristen Ciccarelli, this series is for you.
As someone who rarely reads murder mysteries, I can say wholeheartedly that this series is an exception. Jessi is a mastermind. I am convinced she has a wall at home with several hundred sticky notes and red thread. The author presents the evidence in a way that makes you second-guess yourself. I get it wrong every single time.
As promised, we have more Julian content. I knew from book one that he would be my second-favorite character. He is mysterious and elusive. I loved watching Edith gently break down each mental wall as their relationship flourished. I ate every sentence Jessi fed us. The yearning in this book? Top tier. The author does an amazing job balancing romantic relationships and the plot. Thank the Weaver for that.
So often, I feel like the quality drops after a series’ first book, so it’s always something special when I go from “great” to “somehow even better”! I read the first 25% in maybe 2 weeks, and then the rest in less than 2. The first part was because life got in the way, but after that I said “screw you” to life because I just could NOT put this book down.
Edith Vale (goodbye alias!) is a bit like a floundering fish thanks to her change in status, but she kept her head above water way better than I would’ve in the same situation. This isn’t a romance, but I was also continuing to root for her and Julian Roswick to get together. Especially after any doubts I had about him evaporated based, thanks to his response to learning certain information
I’m still reeling from this read and can’t put my thoughts together well, but people NEED to read this book! Also, if anyone can coax @jessi_st_john_writer into giving me the third book early, please do because that ending?!?
