More Gentlemanlike: A Pride and Prejudice Variation

Rate this book
Darcy and Elizabeth find their happiness early—but they are not the only ones who need a second chance.

When Elizabeth Bennet visits Pemberley, she expects only to admire Mr Darcy’s estate—not to encounter the gentleman himself.

For Fitzwilliam Darcy, her unexpected arrival is both a shock and an opportunity. Since his disastrous proposal at Hunsford, he has had months to reflect upon his pride, his arrogance, and the pain he caused the woman he still loves. Now, faced with Elizabeth once more, he is determined not to waste the chance before him.

Elizabeth has every reason to doubt him. Yet the Darcy she meets at Pemberley is not quite the proud, disdainful gentleman she remembers. He is attentive, sincere, and far more careful with her feelings than she ever imagined he could be.

Their understanding comes sooner than either expected—but love, once acknowledged, changes more than two hearts.

As Elizabeth and Darcy begin their life together, those around them must also reckon with the past. Jane and Bingley are forced to confront the hurt left behind at Netherfield. Georgiana finds comfort and confidence in a family made stronger by Elizabeth’s presence. Others must decide whether they will cling to pride, resentment, and manipulation—or seek something better.

More Gentlemanlike is a low-angst, ensemble Pride and Prejudice variation featuring an early Elizabeth and Darcy happily ever after, second chances, family healing, and more than one path toward love.

A tale of two (gentle)men

4.5* rounded up

Wonderful story!

I thought that this author's creativity and unique plots were the brightest aspects of her first books (What Happened After Lambton & The Accidental Letter). However, the writing style and conciseness in this author's books continue to advance so that the former and later aspects are now on par.

Though the title refers to Elizabeth's refusal at Hunsford, it could easily apply to Bingley as it does to Darcy. Bingley did not behave in a gentlemanly manner in his fleeting attentions and capricious actions when departing Netherfield. I do note that the Darcy and Elizabeth relationship is the primary one here, and they're able to quickly come to an understanding. Darcy is steadfast and all that a gentleman should be

Relationships with sisters are also highlighted here, and long-standing established ones are found lacking.

This is fairly low-angst, and most of that comes from outside of our dear couple.

After receiving an early copy from the author, I have purchased the e-book.

When Elizabeth visits Derbyshire with her aunt and uncle, she unexpectedly encounters Pemberley’s owner on his estate. Darcy seems changed, he is less proud on the one hand and more considerate of Elizabeth and her feelings on the other.
When Darcy meets Elizabeth on his estate he is determined not to waste his second chance to win her heart and therefore soon asks her for a courtship. But as Elizabeth is equally sure of her heart, Jane's letter finds them as an engaged couple.
Not willing to let anything come between them, the couple decides to face whatever awaits them at Longbourn together.
What has happened at Longbourn? Will there be a scandal awaiting them? And will they be able to face everything together or will circumstances prevent their union?

The book was very well written by the author Melissa Anne. I always enjoy her books very much because she tends to let Darcy and Elizabeth have an early understanding and then face all the obstacles together. This is also the case in this book. You only need to read a handful of pages and Darcy and Elizabeth are a couple. And everything that awaits them at Longbourn they face together. I like this early understanding very much because I enjoy watching them act together and I also enjoy it when they are nearly the whole of the book in love.

I enjoyed the relationship between Darcy and Elizabeth very much. Both are already in love and care deeply for the other. Darcy, in particular, is not willing to ever give Elizabeth up again after he has finally won her hand in marriage. I like that they are not willing to let something or someone come between them and that they fight for their understanding.

One of the side characters I really loved in this story was Anne de Bourgh. As soon as her mother is on her trip to prevent Darcy from marrying someone else then her daughter, Anne takes action. I like her smartness in executing her schemes and that she is successful in the end. Go, Anne, go.

Another person I liked very much was Charles Bingley. After he is aware of some things, he finally takes his sister in hand and prevents her from ever harming him or others again. And I especially enjoyed that he even took actions that Caroline was not aware of and was therefore much cleverer than she.

Jane was the one person I was a bit torn about. She definitely was not her usual angelic self, she showed rather human character traits. I could understand some of her thoughts and actions but was disgusted by others. I was glad that, in the end, she was a nice woman again, but there were times in the book when I didn’t like her very much. But I think you need to read and decide for yourself.

There are some persons who tried to cause trouble but it was nothing to dire and not much of it was against the union of Darcy and Elizabeth. It was more like family trouble they needed to deal with. But in the end everything was solved to the satisfaction of ODC.

If you like to know how Darcy and Elizabeth will deal with the problems at Longbourn when they receive Jane’s letter in Lambton’s inn as an engaged couple, you should definitely read this excellent story.

I highly recommend it.

The story begins shortly after Elizabeth’s visit to Pemberley when Darcy shows up to call on Elizabeth in Lambton. She has just received letters from Jane, but instead of reading them while Darcy waits they instead both walk out to meet up with her aunt and uncle. During the walk Darcy manages to gather his courage and request a courtship. Elizabeth counters that she is ready for a proposal and Darcy is thrilled to oblige her. While Darcy speaks with her uncle, Elizabeth gets around to reading her letters from Jane.

Lydia has been sent home from Ramsgate in disgrace by Colonel Forster and Mrs Bennet has been bemoaning the family’s ruin across the neighborhood. Elizabeth offers to release Darcy from the engagement but he instead declares he will accompany she and the Gardiners to Longbourn. There they discover the Bennet parents at the height of uselessness. No surprise. What does surprise is Jane’s attitude. Elizabeth does not find the sister she knows and loves, but a sullen, jealous creature who has been listening to slander about her supposedly dearest sister and believing the worst of her. She is also bitter because she expected Elizabeth to come home and assume the burden of the entire debacle and instead she is there intending to wed and to go away with Darcy.

Jane has been raised by her mother to believe that she, due to her grace and beauty, would be her family’s salvation. Instead it is Elizabeth who has come home engaged to someone far superior than Jane could ever hope for. Surely Elizabeth must have forced his hand in some manner. How else could she have become engaged to someone of such prominence otherwise? And someone has been filling Jane’s head with stories of Elizabeth’s misbehavior which Jane chooses to believe over the sister she has known her entire life.

Elizabeth and Darcy refuse to be drawn in by the drama and begin to repair the damage wrought by Lydia and the useless Bennet parents. But can Elizabeth’s relationship with her sister, damaged by suspicion and jealousy, ever be repaired? And can Jane come to understand the how her own complacency has played a part in her family’s failures?

The thing I like the most about this story is the lack of discord between Darcy and Elizabeth. Darcy, at his most gentlemanly, is truly swoon worthy as he ensures that Elizabeth’s care and comfort are his highest priority. They work as a team to overcome all obstacles to find their happiness.

What if Darcy didn’t leave after Jane’s letter arrived with news about Lydia? What if Lizzy and Darcy had just reached an agreement? This is the premise for this marvelous book. Darcy is swoon worthy, loving, and determined to marry Elizabeth no matter what the world throws at them. Elizabeth is not her typical prejudiced self. (That all happened before this book begins). This sweet romp takes us on a trip that mirrors canon to a point, but diverges nicely to bring a new perspective and depth to the story and the characters. Wickham manages to throw a wrench in things, as usual, but is dealt with in a most unusual manner. Collins causes minor ruckus, Lady Catherine causes her own style of mayhem, Jane behaves in a very non Jane like manner. Through it all, Darcy is loving, demonstrative, and able to take charge where needed. And determined. Did I mention that? I have read this as a WIP and also as an ARC reader, so do not want to give spoilers before publication. I do, however, highly recommend this wonderful lovely story.

Low Angst, High Devotion — A Lovely Darcy Variation

Let me introduce you to the Darcy of this variation. “You have promised to be my wife, Elizabeth, and I intend to hold you to that promise—not from pride or anything so foolish, but from my complete devotion to you…” What is more gentle and manly than complete devotion to the woman you love? Once Elizabeth agreed to be his wife and confessed she returned his feelings, nothing could pry Darcy away from her.

What I enjoyed:
Low angst, but a surprising tension between Elizabeth and Jane
Elizabeth and Darcy joining forces early to face their challenges together
A playful, entertaining twist on Lady Catherine’s storyline
More page time for Mary and Kitty
Clean, sweet, and heartwarming throughout

What I didn’t like:
Nothing. As usual, Melissa Anne did not disappoint. I received a free advanced reader copy of this book and am voluntarily sharing my honest opinion. It's worth the read.

This sweet Pride and Prejudice variation delivers everything I love in a comfort read. Darcy and Elizabeth begin the story already united in purpose, and their partnership—steady, tender, and beautifully in sync—is an absolute joy. Darcy is wonderfully swoon‑worthy, and Elizabeth meets him with equal strength and warmth.

The twist on Jane’s character adds surprising depth, giving the story a fresh emotional layer without ever tipping into heavy angst (an insecure Jane and sometimes a bit silly in her insecurity). The plot stays engaging and character‑driven, offering a thoughtful look at family dynamics while still keeping the tone light and uplifting.

A lovely, low‑stress read with great characterizations, witty moments, and a Darcy who shines on every page. Highly recommended.

very Enjoyable

** I was privileged with an early copy of the story to critique and review.**
I must admit I found this story was rather straight forward and decisive for ODC WHICH I ENJOYED. So often these novels feel they must create multiple barriers which end up dragging the narrative. There are enough unique twists in this storyline to keep the reader guessing and makes it a very interesting P&P variation. It then becomes Passionate without crossing the line into vulgarity. There are unexpected actions which are committed by some people around ODC (*no spoilers). These actions later give rise to conflicts and poisoned relationships. And I appreciated the creative way the author chose to use these conflicts to create positive growth and strength in a number of different characters in the end. Very nice read.

4.5 stars rounded up to 5 stars.

This is a pride and prejudice variation that begins at Elizabeth’s visit to Pemberley. It differs from the original that Lydia doesn’t actually elope with Wickham, because he doesn’t show up to their rendezvous. Instead she is returned to Longbourn in disgrace. Elizabeth and Darcy solve their differences fast, making the story low angst variation, (which I normally prefer). So Darcy and Georgiana join Elizabeth and the Gardiners in their return to Longbourn.
If you like a swoon worthy Darcy, Mr Bingley and Jane with a backbone (at least after some nudging), the bad guys get their comeuppance and low angst, then this is definitely the story for you.

This story starts after Hunsford when Elizabeth and Darcy meets accidentally at Pemberley. They have both had time to think and regret their earlier behavior. Now they meet in a different setting where both get a new chance.
When a letter with distressing news reach Elizabeth they have already made a strong bond and understanding. This gives us a wonderful story with a strong and loving relationship between E&D!
Georgiana is lovely in this story and gets comfort from Elizabeth's family. I am sorry to say that I could not quite like Jane in this story...
I recommend this story to all who love a story witha strong E&D connection and love!

2.75 ⭐️

Was an OK read. The best part was that this book was more focused on the post Darcy and Lizzy getting together bit. But the conflict of the book seemed unresolved in some aspects. I would have liked to have seen Mrs Bennet actually either get better or get her comeuppance. And I would have liked to have heard mention of Jane's feelings towards Lizzy beforehand and would have loved to have seen her get more of an earful about than what she did. And the last 20 % of the book just was not even about ODC which was a bummer. And no epilogue !! I wanted one as almost 99.9% of JAFF have one and I felt shafted by not getting one.

How ODC get their HEA…

E&D get out of their own way early in the story, so there are a lot of nice moments between them. The conflict here is interpersonal - no murder plots or anything wild.

Very little Wickham and Collins is nice. And Lady Catherine should be sent on indignation-fueled odysseys more often in JAFF.

I read the story while it was being developed, and I like what the author ultimately did with Jane. This isn’t a Bad Jane, but it is a Jane who needed to do some maturing along with our other characters.

Note: I received an advance copy, but did not receive any renumeration for this review

Another well written tale from Melissa Anne. The story opens in Lambton where Darcy is able to spend time with Elizabeth and the Gardiners before she reads Janes letter. Determined to help with the potential scandal, he refuses to allow her and her family to face this without him. Despite the uncertainty at the opening, this a low angst story. The Bennett family’s dynamics and behavior are shown with the full range of behavior on display. The usual characters make an appearance and try to interfere with ODC.

I am thankful I was able to read an advanced readers copy as well as the published version.

This is a lovely low-angst comfort read, that’s perfect if you’re looking for something light and feel good.
There’s tension, but it’s mostly character based rather than plot based, which makes for an interesting but gentle story.
I always enjoy stories where we see a less perfect and therefore more human Jane, and this is a great example of that!
If you’re looking for something more angsty or high stakes this might not be for you, but the characterisations and witty banter were more than enough to make it worth the read for me!

Such a wonderful book! A Darcy that doesn’t hold back and an Elizabeth who speaks up when she has doubts instead of letting them lead to misunderstandings. I also enjoyed the growth for Jane, through I was angry with her for a while, she did mature and become a much better person. Actually, all the Bennet sisters become better people in the end.

I love all Melissa Anne’s books and am often an ARC reader for her, as I was for this book but I did still purchase the ebook to support her work. This book has been added to my favorites list for reading again in the future.

A very worth read!

A marvelous story. This romance between our beloved couple causes the heart to melt. I really want to find and keep this Darcy, and I also loved this Elizabeth, so decided once she was convinced of his love. I found some characters not so likable as usual but the tale is enchanting.

One of my favourite authors so feel gutted to say I struggled to finish this book. There were some amazing overdue setdowns but inconsistency . Loved Darcy though not 100% about Elizabeth. A bit wishy washy.

who to believe?

An interesting read… everything begins as in the original- it differs when Darcy is able to propose before she reads Jane’s letter. Not to mention a better reckoning for Wickham than in the original. I do like that with Darcy and Gardiners firmer hands- Bennet finally steps up…

A sweet, calm story

If you want a calming, summertime fluff story, this is a book you must read. It is smoothly written, very low angst and all ends well. It also has a few LOL scenes along with some very satisfying 'loose' end tie ups. Enjoy!! I'm certain you will.
