Blake Woolven is the bad boy CEO of Woolven Industries, but he’s badder than the luscious, BBW Randi Rutger would’ve guessed. After Woolven took down her father’s company and devoured it like a shaking rabbit, she’s determined to get close to him and make all the Woolvens pay for destroying her father. Blake knows Randi’s agenda, but the wolf inside him will do anything to have her. Even expose the Woolven family secret. When Randi sees Blake and his brothers shed their skins beneath the moon, she’s terrified. But it’s just what she needed to bring him low—that and the silver nitrate plasma gun her father designed. With her loyalties torn, Randi must choose between avenging her father and the big bad wolf who clawed his way into her heart.
Saranna De Wylde has always been fascinated by things better left in the dark. She wrote her first story after watching The Exorcist at a slumber party. Since then, she’s published horror, romance and narrative nonfiction. Like all writers, Saranna has held a variety of jobs, from operations supervisor for an airline, to an assistant for a call girl, to a corrections officer. But like Hemingway said, “Once writing has become your major vice and greatest pleasure, only death can stop it.” So she traded in her cuffs for a full-time keyboard. She loves to hear from her readers.
Saranna writes nonfiction under the name Sara Lunsford. Her memoir about her time as a corrections officer called Sweet Hell on Fire releases Nov 1 from Sourcebooks.
Nice and fast read. This story consists of something that PNR reader knows too well but also introduce us to something more - science and different forms of werewolves. I will grab next books to get to know better the rest of the series, as characters were really interesting. Especially the next main characters.
The story for Big Bad Billionaire (The Woolven Secret, #1) actually sounded pretty interesting and admittedly after reading the first couple of pages of the first chapter, I thought it might be a good read. Though I didn't like the author's style of writing, I continued on even though the story failed to grab my attention and hold it. Like most readers, I'm guilty of reading on hoping the story will pick up or inevitably get better. Didn't happen here. The dialogue is comedic and the bulk of the action in this story seemingly takes place in one night. The story and the flow felt rushed and desperate to find an audience. It felt like the author was trying to satisfy every shifter or paranormal pallette.
Some of the best lines in the book:
“You want me.” It was a statement, a fact, a home truth. “No, I don’t.” she lifted her chin. “Earlier, it was the flower. That’s not desire. That’s a date rape drug. I’m surprised it’s legal to grow it here.” “I am a monster. I told you, I’m the king of the monsters. But I will protect you from the rest of them.” “I’ve only been here a day, and you’ve already broken through all my defenses.”
Now for the silliest dribble ever written:
The first one looked just like every werewolf she’d ever seen in the shittiest B-rated horror movies. Oh Christ. She stuffed her fist in her mouth to keep from screaming (Um...I think seeing werewolves is reason enough to let a scream or two fly...just saying!) She wanted to run. Needed to flee. Her stomach twisted on itself and she bit so hard into her fist. She drew blood, causing both wolves to turn their attention her way (There's a raging fight going on and this silly twit stands still watching and biting her fist--really?! This is far worse than a B movie). Drew, Parker, and Blake burst through the front doors of Aphelion…They covered the distance separating them almost instantly then Drew and Parker launched themselves on the dark beast (It took 3-4 werewolves to fight one from a rival pack?!--Something tells me the Woolven pack is in trouble!) He would not hurt her. Randi would guess the women who wrote love letters to serial killers had that same sort of thought. Was she one of those? He kissed the top of her head, an oddly gentle act from a beast (the beast kissed her...Snout and all!)
At the cost of being redundant, I don't think more needs to be written. Horrible waste of time. On my Were Scale of Hotness, 0.0000001 stars.
Randi thinks that Blake killed her scientist father so she is out to ruin him anyway she can. She stands up to him in his office and offers to break the code on the project her father was working on if Blake gives her a job but she lets him know that she plans to take him down and ruin him for what she thinks he's done.
Blake is a werewolf and as soon as he meets Randi, he knows that she is his mate. Only problem is she hates him and blames him for her father killing himself. Her father was a scientist and was working on some secret project for Blake's company but now he needs Randi to read the code that her father put all of his notes in.
After signing all the papers to come work for Blake, she is informed that she is to take up residence where he lives because that's where her father's lab was and where he and his family live. Randi doesn't know what to believe when Blake shows interest in her because not only does she think someone like him would never go for her but he knows that she is there to ultimately bring him down. But no matter what she thinks, she cannot ignore how he makes her feel when he turns on the charm and after she starts to believe that he really does like her she finds out something about him that changes things.
Along with the struggling relationship, there seems to be a war brewing between the different wolf packs. Not only that but a certain vampyr (Vampire) crossed Blake and he's not happy about it.
Randi is no shrinking violet. She can hold her own and ends up being one badass heroine who can stand up to whoever she needs to. Which is why when she finds out what Blake and his family are, she freaks out a little but quickly comes to terms with it. She seems to take everything that's thrown at her and it was a lot, with grace. Sure, a girl needs a little time to come to terms with things but she does and proves that she is very much the right mate for an alpha.
There's a huge twist and a few turns that don't seem to go the way I was thinking. The overarching plot is left open for this series but the romance between these two is concluded by the end of this book. I'll have to read the next book to find out what happens with the vampyr's, his uncle's new bride and the war.
I really liked this book and look forward to reading the next book in this series.
It's no secret that Ms. DeWylde is talented. I mean read any of her books, such as Housewives of Olympus. Her tales are always unique and plush.
Big Bad Billionaire is no different. Saranna has taken the paranormal werewolf tale, laced it with billionaire and playboy Blake Woolven, and given us a fun, flirty, sexy, and intriguing to series.
Blake isn't sure if Randi will be the ONE or the one who brings down his company, family, and pack. It's clear from the start, that though he may struggle with this risk, he isn't about to let what's his walk away from him.
This story is quick and engaging. Find out about the Woolven Secret. I, for one, can't wait to read about the rest of the Woolven Men.
BIG BAD BILLIONAIRE-The Woolven Secret 1; Is the birth of a heart-throbbing enthralling series. (Each book in the series will focus on a Woolven family member) Saranna's talent as an author truly shines as she lures you into a POWERFUL UNFORGETABLE story.
The story takes place in Den Hollow, MO, on the Woolven Estate {Aphelion}. The characters as vividly described are powerful and engaging: Randi Rutger-curvy, sexy, independent, red-headed beauty; David Rutger-scientist, worked for Blake Woolven, Randi's dad; Alpha Blake Woolven-billionaire, charismatic, womanizer, dominance seeps from the pores of this powerful Alpha (the hulk would probably submit to him); Drew-Beta, brother to Blake, the level headed one; Parker, youngest brother, prankster; Warner (War) Uncle, was badly scarred in a fight; Eleanor Westwood-housekeeper/nanny/resident witch; Vamprs.
As the story unfolds you learn that David Rutger has committed suicide leaving Randi a two word note: BLAKE WOOLVEN. She believes that Blake was responsible for her dad's death and devises a plan to ruin the Woolven empire. She applies for a job at Woolven Industries as she is the only one who can decode her dad's notes at Tech. During the interview with Blake, Randi informs him that she is out to destroy him. She shows no fear of him, but finds herself attracted to him. Unfortunately for Blake, he and his wolf identify her as MATE...lucky him (she's an inferno of hate). He hires her as VP of Tech. The adventure begins....
From start to finish this story is fantastic, a shifter lovers dream as you are transported into the world of the WOOLVEN's; the banter between Blake and Randi sensational, the characters are courageous, loyal, passionate and believable. The romance was hot-blooded. There is danger, tension, life threatening incidents and some astonishing reveals. The story demands the reader's attention. Actually, I felt I was watching a movie instead of reading a book. I have no reservations in recommending this book as it was truly an exciting reading experience and I most certainly will be getting the next book in this fabulous series.
Lots of cliches, romance novel and shifter both. The world-building was virtually nonexistant; facts about the wolves were just dropped in as if things had already been explained. The plot was tired, and the characters undeveloped. The romance was unsupported by the context, and there were gaps/holes in the action. I tried to finish just to find out whodunnit, but I just got to the point where I didn't care enough to push on.
I have wanted this book for while now. Was undecided about getting it. I was a little disappointed in it. I have it built in my mind that it was going be a great read, but it was good not great.
The first book to the Woolven Secret series was overall enjoyable and fun. The story was built on the typical yet different world of paranormal romance. Typical because all the usual species, their strength and weaknesses were not much different than most PNR. Different because Ms. Saranna DeWylde had introduced science to make them into the different species.
For world building, I never ceased to be amazed by the author's creativity. I also liked her writing style very much. However, similar to her many books that I had read, the book lacked in consistency in mostly the relationship between the protagonists albeit much improved than some other books. I couldn't keep up with the change in the way the hero and heroine thinking.
Spoilers
I would be ranting only mostly about the changing in H and h for this because Ms. Saranna DeWylde had done this same problem before. And although I would say that this one was not 'that bad'. It was still rather frustrating and annoying to see it happen again.
The first part that made me went 'huh' was right after the very first chapter. After the H had constantly kept reminding himself that he didn't want a human mate, that there was no way that the h was his mate. He suddenly just accepted the h right the next chapter just right that. And it was not like he had no resistant since he already knew and saw her before. He then of course suddenly became a total flirt to the h and later became obsessively possessive of the h just like any other Alpha typical wolves were.
Then instead of the H, the h became the annoying one. Don't even mentioned how they just suddenly jumped into bed. I knew it happened all the time but I just found it not executed well enough. h was supposed to be an independent and strong woman at the beginning of the book. I understood that the knowledge of different world could even make a grown man shit their pants but h suddenly became a damsel, a scaredy cat and a selfish brat. It was such a major change that I thought 'was she even the same person in the first chapter?'. Fortunately the other woolven wolves saw though her bullshit and straightened her out. Of course with just that and overwhelming urge to mate, she finally came though... just like that.
The overall read of this book was alright for me. It was a little annoying at times but I still found the story and other characters very enjoyable. Sad to say that the supporting characters were more enjoyable to me than the main couples.
Who doesn't love a bad boy?!?! I certainly do! Blake and his family were full of passion and loyalty in a super sexy way. A great book full of action and romance.
A LOT of twists and turns in this book. There are many characters that I considered "one off" stories. Stories that were running in parallel with the true story of Blake and his one true mate. Wolves are my favorite shifters.
***A gifted copy was provided by the author for an honest review***
OMG, this book grabs you literally on the first paragraph. Saranna has taken a paranormal tale and thrown a whole ‘nother twist on it. One that involves some kinky hijinks and some intrigue with some flirty , sexy matter.
Blake Woolven is the bad boy CEO of Woolven Industries but there is more to him than meets the eye- he’s also Alpha to his pack . BBW Randi Rutger is back at Woolven, determined to take down Blake and his company because she holds them responsible for the death of her father. But not so fast. At first Blake kept her around because it’s the old motto “ keep your friends close and your enemies close” saying but something about how she smelled and the attraction meant that the old wives tale for wolves was true and Randi really was what that smell meant and he could not do her harm .
Intrgue and lies abound and Blake and Randi found themselves having to search for the truth to protect themselves and to get to the bottom –or else they would possibly never see the light of day and Blake’s pack could end up paying the ultimate price. Also there is a HUGE truth coming for Randi that I didn’t see coming til the very end ..let me say-GAME CHANGER. This is a great new series and I came wait for more in this series. I LOVE werewolves books and this is definitely my cup of tea. The passion, the intensity of lust , Blake’s alpha-ness was so yummy and Randi- loved her directness and how she looked for her truth, even at risk to herself-emotionally and physically because she wanted to give her father’s memory peace. Awesome new series!
Not as good as previous works by this author but still good. Or maybe I'm just being pigheaded because I don't usual care much for wolves. That could be it too. I'm not entirely sure. I can say, however, it's one of my favorite stories with werewolves. I'm not a big fan of "all for the good of the pack" because while I do understand protecting family, I also understand that not all family deserves this kind of devotion either. The overly done "alpha" thing isn't much to my taste either. I usually find alpha heroes to be obnoxious, full of themselves and actually disrespectful of women because they always think they know best and listen to no one. This was, surprisingly enough, not the case here. Blake, the alpha, is most definitely obnoxious sometimes and full of himself but, after meeting Randi? He gives her choices. He doesn't try to force her hand. He wants her happiness more then his own. Now that, ladies and gentlemen, is a true alpha. And Randi? I'm still not sure about her. I did like her after she turned wolf. Before though? I had a hard time pining her feelings down and relate to her.

This definitely sounds interesting, fun, and entertaining! It is not the normal paranormal werewolf tale, nor is it a bad boy billionaire tale. It is a combination of both!! The author has taken the typical werewolf tale and fused it with billionaire and playboy Blake Woolven. Or maybe the other way around? It sounds like such a refreshing story.
This was a free book for signing up for a newsletter. It's the beginning of the series. The world has potential, the characters had potential, and so did the story arc. Sadly, it didn't quite reach. Mostly because the author couldn't seem to figure out what genre/audience they were shooting for. It vacillated between horror, urban fantasy, romance, suspense, and erotica, but never quite managed to truly find its feet in any of them. I like a good cross-genre book, but it needs to stand on its own in at least one area while reaching over into the other(s). It took me a while to manage to finish the book because. Kept putting down and then had to make myself come back. I won't be picking up more in the series without a heckuva good recommendation from a friend. Your mileage may vary.
Misunderstood Billionaire Blake Woolven has a secret to keep and an image to project to the world until one fiery redhead storms into his office turning his world upside down. Randi Rutger is determined to bring Blake Woolven down no matter the cost to herself, after all, it is his fault her father is dead. Randi is a delicious character who is full of stubbornness and love. She is a bit of all of us and a BBW to boot. I love that she gets the werewolf. Misunderstood Billionaire – Check; Delicious and cheeky BBW – Check; A plot full of surprises – Check. You are an amazing writer Ms. DeWylde. Keep them coming Please!! And thank you!!
Normally I stay away from the billionaire club of stories. But I adore this author. This was a good read, and I can see it going further. The Wolven have a lot of explaining to do for Randi to even think about helping them. And Randi is going to need what Blake has more than the revenge she wants.
At one time or another we've all feared what goes bump in the night. The monsters under our bed, the ghosts and the beings hiding in our closet. What happens when you find out that all of it was actually true and you had every reason to be scared. This book brings that thought to the forefront in a clever and witty way.
Blake Woolven is the alpha of the Woolven Pack. He's big, bad and sexy as sin. He is the Big Bad Wolf.
Randi Rutger just lost her father to suicide. She's a lost lamb in a bad world with revenge on her mind. The target of her revenge is none other than Big Bad Blake Woolven himself.
Randi soon finds out that her world is filled with supernatural beings who make monsters and serial killers seem like child's play.
I love the way this author wrote the story. There are no sparkling vampires and the fairies are just as feared as the wolves. This book has it all. What really pulled it all together for me and held me captive were the characters. They're quirky and strong with real personalities. They all just clicked together good and bad.
This is definitely an author to watch and I intend to stalk her relentlessly.
It has it all, a Billionaire who is a werewolf, a woman out to destroy his company for her father's death. Randi wanted to destroy Blake Woolven's company, she blamed him personally for her father's suicide. Randi applies for a the job of translating his encrypted notes and tells Blake to his face that he killed her father and she is going to take him down and make him pay. He hires her immediately because he wants the challenge and she is his fated mate. They travel to the Woolven Industries compound in the Appalachians. Blake is so turned on he starts to shift and Randi runs into the maze with the man eating plant that makes women turn into horny beasts. He takes advantage and indulges in cunnilingus and Randi gets pissed at him and herself, especially when she finds out things aren't as they seem. When she is walking the compound and an intruder tries to get her, she sees the entire Woolven family turn into wolves and werewolves to catch the intruder. She takes one of her father's inventions, a silver atomizer gun, to shoot and kill the werewolf who was going to kill her. She only killed him because he claimed he killed her father. Will she fully mate with Blake and become a werewolf, will she leave him in his time of need? She doesn't know, her head and heart are so confused. She really wants to find the real killer of her father, and now all the wolf packs are going to go to war against each other. Will either of them find true happiness in their wild world?
Big Bad Billionaire (The Woolven Secret 1) is a werewolf romance/mystery. The mystery is the series overarching plot, while the romance is the main focus of the book (and I presume the subsequent ones). Having read her 10 Days series, I had started this expecting more of a comedy. This is not the case, though I'm not unhappy I read it, despite that. It's much more serious, though it does have a number of humorous moments.
Third person omniscient perspective with both characters point of view.
Randi is a human who wants to take down Blake and his company because she believes him/them to be the reason her father hung himself. Blake is, you guessed it, a werewolf. In this world, they are not out in the open (it's pretty much contemporary besides the magic aspect). Randi is a spitfire with some body image issues and a lot of anger. Blake is a werewolf alpha with a lot of responsibility on his shoulders and a rather uncouth image in both circles he runs in. He recognizes Randi as his mate as soon as she walks into his office and that's where the story starts. He has to find a way to woo her despite her conviction that he had a hand in her father's death.
I was not a huge Randi fan. She was a bit whiny for my tastes, but setting that aside, she made a good match for Blake. I enjoyed that he didn't fight the bond but instead tried to work with it. He was very patient. Also, a bit too cocky, but I didn't expect less with a title like this. :)
If you like your heroes wealthy and able to sprout fur, some heavy steam, a good dose of fighting, some brotherly love, and an enemies to lovers theme, this is a good read.
I don't think I have ever disliked a leading lady more than I disliked this one. Kept hoping to get more involved into the politics of this world but got none. It's written liked the author assumed that I already knew all about it so no explanations given. I kept reading for the big secret but really it wasn't worth my while. Will definitely not bother with the rest of the series. In short Meh!
Book review of Big Bad Billionaire (The Woolven Secret Book 1)
Wow! What a ride ... for some characters quite literally! 😄 At first you want to hate Blake Woolven along with Randi but then his character blooms right before your eyes. With the increased depth of his character comes the same of Randi. Randi starts out as a strong character, every bit the Alpha and then she becomes that Alpha B!tch she was born to be.
It is a hot and suspenseful read ... give it a go!
Very serious story, revolving around supernatural politics and war. Very involved story. The author did a good job of introducing readers to the world and explaining butts at a time. And a handful of grammatical and spelling errors. Overall, decent read, but it's only the start of what promises to be a complicated series.
I don't read a lot of supernatural romance but I love watching it on TV. This story read like it could easily be a movie. How DeWylde manages to get a line like "I'll eat your kidneys like conversation hearts" to work in a romance is just amazing. I really loved this romp through the woods and can't wait to read the rest of the series!
This is the first time I've ever read any of Saranna DeWylde's books. Loved the fast pace of the story, loved the draw that the story had on me. I could easily see in my mind's eye what Blake & Randi were feeling for each other and their surroundings. Will be reading more of this series!!!
This was an OK read. I would have felt better about it if I didn't dislike Randi so much in the beginning. It's one thing to be strong and confident. It's something completely different when you're on the verge of being to stupid to live. He says stay and just to prove that you aren't scared, you go roaming. But guess what happens?!?
Good read! I liked how this was dealt with, even though I had trouble with how easily the hero "hired" the heroine for the job he was advertising. There were in-world reasons for it, I guess, but it still felt rushed. Once we were there, though, I loved this! This has a deep world that I'd love to explore later.
