Victoria Pade is the bestselling author of numerous contemporary romances, six historical romances and two mystery novels. She began her writing career after leaving college to have her first daughter. That daughter was seven years old and there was a second daughter, before Victoria had her first book accepted for publication. That novel and the three that followed it were historical romances. But the exit of her husband and the urge to do more contemporary writing that explored the kinds of problems she was facing inspired a switch.
Rand Colton is the firstborn, a lawyer in Washington D.C. He recently "lost" his secretary, Sadie, to retirement. He has had a lot of temps come in, but none are up to his standards.
Lucy is Sadie's niece. She has the background necessary, but prefers a job she can stay at home with her son, Max. Sadie sets up an interview. During the interview, Rand makes it clear he does not want a single mother, because: 1) he doesn't like the interruptions and 2) he believes the work he is doing and the secretary along with him, would deprive any child of parental guidance. Lucy does not tell him about Matt. Sadie invites everyone to dinner and Rand learns about Max. Max adores Rand. Both adults work around it, and both have feelings for the other. Lucy is gun-shy after Max's father, but eventually they got engaged.
Emily called Rand. Lucy suggested a double-blind postmarked to let Joe Colton know. She also researched Meredith Colton and so Rand knows of her past and Patsy.
"Meredith" hired a P. I. to track down "Patsy", but he has run out of these. She believes "Patsy" dead and turns to focus on Emily.
Joe is relieved that the anonymous note. "Meredith" tells her assassin to look in Colorado. We readers and Rand know Emily is in Wyoming.
"Louise" had a good dream and isn't ready to contact her sister yet.
Rand Colton Lucy Lowry Lucy has just moved D.C. with her son and her Aunt Sadie talks her into being a temporary Secretary for Rand Colton. Rand is the oldest son of Joe Colton and is a high powered Attorney in D.C. He needs a good Secretary until he can find a permanent Secretary. He doesn’t want a single mother, so Lucy doesn’t tell him, until her Aunt invites Rand for dinner and he meets Max. Good, quick and fun read. The mystery of Meredith continues as Rand gets pulled into it by Emily.
Predictable, the Colton subplot is more annoying than interesting--too soap opera. How they knew they were in love after knowing each other less than a month, and how Rand knew that he wanted and was going to change his entire life because of her I will never know.
I've finished this book. I guess this series is long. The reason why I say that, is because of the mother issue. That's all I am going to say about that.
