This is the fifth book in the Sugarland Blue series that focusses on the lives of those working for the local police department . It's a book that mixes suspense with romance in equal measures as the author delivers a fast paced, harrowing story that hits hard with events that are truly poignant. As the story begins Austin is going through a difficult time emotionally as his heavily pregnant wife is seeking a divorce. Resigned to be the best absent father he can be Austin carries on with his duties but a case of homicide finds him slap bang in the middle of a mystery. It starts to look as if Austin has made an enemy who has no conscience and will do anything to hurt Austin. When the most awful thing possible happens Austin will need to stay strong but there's someone on his side . That someone is the medical examiner Laura. She is pretty good at solving puzzles and always finds a way to speak out for the victims but this time it's not just the dead that need her it's a very attractive cop named Austin! As they tread carefully following the clues they spend more time together but not everyone is happy with their burgeoning relationship and it looks like danger is about to come knocking at Laura's door next !
Fans of this authors previous Firefighters of Station Five will no doubt be overjoyed to see this spin off series. It's very much a story aimed at those who love to read romantic suspense and indeed the romance in this book is certainly central to the plot. What didn't sit well with this reader though was the fact that Austin has a pregnant wife and yet has clearly been lusting after another woman! Oh there's no unfaithfulness but I still found it hard to empathise with him. As the story and action progressed Austin does acquit himself but unfortunately not without behaving like an armpit at times! Suspend all disbelief and just sit back and try to work out who the culprit is and maybe just which detective will get his own book next. Ths author delights in giving us alpha heroes and then pairing them up with strong independent women which totally works. I don't think it's essential to have read all the previous books but there are characters here who clearly feature throughout the series. It's not my favourite by this author as I felt the couples happy ever after came at too high a human cost but I will certainly read more. This author also writes paranormal stories under the pen name of JD Tyler I was gifted a copy in exchange for an honest review

Wish this one could have been handled a bit different, but overall it was ok. Have a lot of questions in the end though. Are we going to get a Danny and Frankie story, now that Danny is pretty sure he is no longer sexually confused? What was the questions about the reporter by Austin all about? Are we going to get a story with Lauren's Nascar racing brother? That would be a killer story, or are we going to get a whole new series with Austin's Texas brothers? I am always up for stories in my home state! Yeehaw! :-)

Wow! This is an explosive story that had me biting my nails from the start. Laura was the perfect woman to help Austin, a strong man dealing with catastrophic events, struggle through all that life has thrown at him. I loved how the author conveyed Austin’s vulnerability while maintaining his strength. That is a hard edge to balance and it was done beautifully. The officers with Sugarland have such a great relationship and the people around them pull you in so that you feel you’re a part of it all. The bad guy was horribly perfect for this story. He made me cringe and want to “go get him” like the others. If you can’t tell, I loved it.

An emotional wringer….

What could bring a tough cop to his knees? Well, Captain Austin Rainey is going to, unfortunately, find out. His grief is boundless and the author allows you to feel every moment of grief and anguish. His loss is only compounded by feelings of guilt and the real threat of being falsely accused of murder. He has family, both blood and police, but his co-worker, Laura Eden quickly rises to the task of confidant and friend as they work together to sort out the clues and leads that will free him from his nightmare.

Intense. I have to go with intense to describe the emotional journey that Austin finds himself in. From great anticipation to the lowest of lows, he is brought back to life, and living, with Laura’s help. The writing is top-notch—otherwise the great leaps from despair to happiness, and the events surrounding them, would have seemed over the top. Thankfully, the story works as the characters are real and their emotions are offered up not to sensationalize but in honest reflection. The drama and danger are real, and Austin and Laura use all their resources to find their enemy while, at the same time, quickly realizing their attraction is so much more.

Their HEA is not a given and I admit to holding my breath a few times. It’s not automatic anymore that the hero and heroine are going to live happily ever after so I find it best not to drop my guard. Well, that’s my take on it anyway—you can’t be too careful… Authors are crafty.

An entertaining instalment to a series that offers action and emotion and some sexy frosting on the cake.

Eh...I don't know, this one had me shaking my head a lot. As thing started out I was ok, the crimes were pretty gruesome. I also get why things were hard for Austin.

I guess maybe this one was just a case of things moving too fast to be believable for me.

The villains in Davis's stories continue to become more psychotic as you go through the Sugarland Blue novels.

As has been alluded to in previous stories, medical examiner, Laura Eden, has the hots for Captain Austin Rainey. After a terrible tragedy, the two finally have their chance to be together here, if a crazed killer who is stalking Austin doesn't end it first.

Although Austin and his wife had almost finalized their divorce, and Austin had made peace with losing that relationship, he was looking forward to the birth of their child. Before the child is born, the wife and baby are killed by the stalker.

Austin almost falls apart, but Laura is there to help him pick up the pieces. He finally asks her out, and unlike other stories in this series, they don't immediately hop not bed together. However, before the killer is caught and what seems too short a time after they start having sex, Laura is suddenly pregnant.

There were other extraneous plot lines that weren't tied up well either, including Austin's partner's dilemma over his sexual orientation and if the killer was wearing disguises or if he was a cross dresser. There are also plenty of red herrings before the true killer is revealed.

I thought this was a great story. Austins grief was well written, and believable. There was a sense of time passing, so you don't get the feeling of instant love going on. I though the bad guy plot line was great, I can usually spot the bad guy right off, I was guessing till the end. I wanted to know more about all the characters mentioned. It was really heartbreaking his child died, I wish there was a twist that it was actually kidnapped. Laura was well written as well, she wasn't pushy with Austin, and let him grieve. I loved the action towards the end (don't want to spoil).

I did have a little problem with the end, it ended kinda fast, I wanted more of a conclusion, or a look into Austin and Laura future 10 to 12 months a head. You aren't left handing, you just wan't more.

Austin is the police chief finally divorcing and Laura is the head of the Forensic Unit. If you've read the series we've seen glimpses of these two in previous books and it's really nice to finally get their story. While a suspenseful read, I was distracted by unbelievability. If he cared that deeply and was that concerned about his stalker why would he repeatedly put Laura in danger and make so little effort in hiding their activities. If you can get past that, it had lots of good moments and high drama/suspense moments that will pull on your emotions.

I love this story because it was not a instant relationship but start to build slowly from A woman cared for a broken heart and depressed man. The suspense was good especially when the woman got kinapped by enemy. Also I like when the hero was terrified of losing the heroine and their unborn child.

Bring the Heat by Jo Davis is the 5th book in her Sugarland Blues series. Captain Austin Rainey has been part of the Sugarland Blues series, and in Bring the Heat, it is now his story. In the last book, he nearly died and is now just coming back to work at the Sugarland Police Department. Austin is awaiting the birth of his son by his ex-wife in a few weeks, with their relationship not being amicable. But a tragedy strikes, and Austin will find himself as a possible suspect in the murder of his ex wife and his unborn son.

Laura Eden is our heroine, and she is the medical examiner. When Laura arrives on the scene, she sees a shell shocked Austin sitting in a police car. Laura has been crushing on Austin for awhile, knowing about his divorce, but was not sure how he felt. She knew, as well as all the cops who work for Austin, that he was innocent. Unable to handle the loss of his son, Austin puts his own life in danger by drinking himself into alcohol poisoning. It will take the other Sugarland cops and Laura to help Austin recover. Laura will find out that those feelings she has for Austin have been reciprocated.

Austin will learn quickly that his wife and sons murder is just the beginning, as a stalker is set on revenge against him, and anyone close to him. While they all investigate the murders, having no idea who or why someone is out to destroy Austin’s life; both Laura and Austin begin to fall hard for each other and their relationship becomes very steamy. Austin’s fears for Laura’s life will make him want to push her away, but Laura won’t let him protect her that way.

What follows is a very exciting mystery to find the killer before they hurt or kill anyone else. The exciting climax will put both Laura and Austin’s life in danger, and the entire Sugarland P.D. will work overtime to try to protect them. But the insane killer is always one step ahead of them.

This was an extremely suspenseful story, and the couple was sizzling together. I will say that the last half of the book became a bit more erotic, which was totally different then the first half, which was very well written. I thought the many sex scenes when the story was intense and very exciting, was overdone. However, that being said, the story and the characters were great, and this is a wonderful series. Do you want to know what happens? I suggest you read Bring the Heat.

*Beware of possible Spoilers*

Captain Austin Rainey’s marriage has gone south, he doesn’t even live with his wife, Ashley, anymore. But she is carrying his child, the baby she didn’t even want, but was more than happy to fight him for custody on just to stick it to him. The son that Austin has waited so long is so close to being here, just four more weeks!

But all of Austin’s dreams come crashing down around him when someone attacks Ashley in the home they used to share and strangles her, with one of his own belts no less, ending both Ashley and their unborn son’s life. And, worse than anything, they were killed because of him and he wasn’t there to protect them.

Austin has a stalker bent on revenge, killing people that resemble him, or even just come in contact with him in passing. If only Austin could figure out who it is!! He’s been scouring his case files for those that he’s put in jail that may have a vendetta against him, but nothing is standing out to him.

And, as all of this is going on, after months of admiring each other from afar, Austin and the beautiful medical examiner, Laura Eden, are finally starting to give in to their feelings for one another. But can they risk a relationship when there is a madman out there bent on revenge?

I enjoyed this storyline. I enjoyed Austin and Laura and thought they were really good together. Although I found this book to be a bit predictable. I knew who the killer was early on, even though they tried to throw me off the scent a few times. I’d mull the new information over, but always came back to my original thought, and it did end up being the culprit. Even the events that happened between Austin and Laura were easy to predict. And the sheer amount of sex scenes made the book really repetitious and made it drag at times.

I still think it’s a good book, but with a little tweaking, I think it could have been even better! I do look forward to seeing more from this couple in the future.

Bring the Heat is the fifth book in the Sugarland Blue series by Jo Davis and this one is an emotional wringer! After the death of his pregnant wife, who he is currently divorcing, Austin finds himself a suspect in the crime. The only person he can turn to is a co-worker he has lusted after for quite some time, and he has a hard time accepting her help. At times he acts like a complete jackass, but overall this was a great story that kept me reading from start to finish!

Life is not going like Captain Austin Rainey expected it would. He’s in the middle of an acrimonious divorce with his pregnant ex-wife and their child is due soon. He’s returning to work after having been injured in the last book in the series, and he’s trying to get on with his new normal. Suddenly he is thrown into a horrific mystery when his ex-wife and unborn son are brutally murdered. Even worse is the fact that as her ex-husband he’s, of course, a suspect.

Medical examiner Laura Eden has the hots for Austin, but she also firmly believes in his innocence. Determined to help him prove he’s not guilty, Laura unknowingly puts herself in the crosshairs of a stalker determined to destroy everything that Austin holds dear.

The resulting story is a fast-paced suspense novel that keeps you guessing from the get-go. Austin is your typical macho hero who tries to push Laura away “to save her” but she is a kickass, strong woman and isn’t having it. Considering what he’s been through, it’s not hard to get past his behavior because it is understandable. And thankfully, he never crosses the line to full on asshole, so that makes it easier.

The relationship between Austin and Laura is steamy, sweet and not necessarily a “given” happy ending, which I liked. I also enjoyed how quickly the story progressed, and I found myself unable to stop reading because I had to see who the killer was and how it all ended.

If you are a fan of Jo Davis you will definitely enjoy this one. It has everything you love about her books – a great hero and heroine that you really get behind, a story that keeps you engaged, and a finish that is satisfying even if it doesn’t end the way you wanted it to!

My Review:
I think what I liked the most that I'm sure a lot of people won't is the whole pregnant ex/wife angle. Sounds worse than it is but the reason I liked it so much was that it added realism to the book. The fact that Austin is in the falling out of love phase with his current relationship and in the falling in love with Laura phase while his ex is carrying their child is something that you find does occur in the real world. Reality hits plenty of couples in the real world when there is a baby on the way and many people feel obligated to stay with their pregnant partners because of babies and many couples have babies to save relationships when things are on the rocks. Its a topic that can be debated and argued over but in the end you know that Austin isn't a bad person and we as readers can't just judge him because of the baby thing. There is so much happening in this book that it adds to all the multi dimensional story lines Davis has juggled from the beginning of this series. There were a few things I felt were lacking which brought my rating to 4 stars instead of 5 but Davis has been able to take on several issues at once and weave them together perfectly.

Wow book 5 already?! I have read the first two books in this series and then I totally fell behind. With that being said I couldn't remember the previous characters or their stories because it has been awhile.

In 4 weeks Austin is going to be a father for the first time with his soon to be ex wife. While at the station he learns they were murdered and someone is out for revenge. While a killer is on the loose Austin falls for Laura, the medical examiner who he has been mooning over.

Laura knows Austin is grieving but she has been in love with him since they met. With everything going on she just wants to make sure he has a friend. Things start to heat up and now the killer is after Laura and is determined to make Austin pay. Over and over.

Although this book had a lot of suspense it had just the same amount of romance. I was surprised with the numerous sex scenes and a little dirty talk that was thrown in.

One thing I enjoyed about this book was the banter between the detectives. Even though they were all going through a stressful time at certain parts they just let go.

The more I read the more I started to remember some of the characters and who they were. I enjoyed playing detective along side of Austin on finding out who this serial killer was. Of course I was wrong! lol

I really didn't like how it ended. I guess I was maybe expecting a little more. I know the killer was messing with Austin but it was frustrating that the killer had access to him so many times but took his sweet time.

I think the next book will be about Danny and I hope that happens soon! Danny is trying to figure out if he is gay or not so hopefully his story will be interesting and entertaining.

If you love playing detective and reading about hot men who are as much as I do I highly recommend this series to read.

NUMBER OF HEARTS: 4
Another wonderful story in the Sugarland PD series. In Bring the Heat we follow Captain Austin Rainey. Austin’s life has not be that easy for the last year or so. First his marriage falls apart, then his soon to be ex is fighting him for their unborn child (a child she never wanted) and now someone is committing horrible crimes all in the name of revenge on Austin.
My heart broke reading this story. Austin has to go through so much. Way more than any man should ever have to go through. Luckily for him he has an amazing set of friends, colleagues and of course Laura Eden.
I really enjoyed this story. Ms. Davis does an amazing job of sucking you into the life of her characters and making you feel all of their joy, pain, sorrow and happiness. Bring the Heat was a roller coaster of emotions. And while there were parts of this book that were beyond painful it was a great ride with a happy ending.
I can’t wait to see what is next in this series.

Jo Davis knows exactly how to “Bring the Heat”. The author’s Firefighters of Station Five series remains one of my favorites and I felt like I was able to jump right back into her world of men in uniform, albeit a different uniform this time. This book was dark and gritty and emotional with the perfect mix of romance and suspense.

It started out great, with sexual tension and a murder mystery. By the end of the book I was ready for the story to be over and a happily ever after. Poor Austin was put through the wringer. He was a great hero, with good character and never mean to the heroine, which I hate. However, I wish he had been more alpha stronger and smarter concerning the murderer. I got tired of his emotional turmoil and breakdowns. Laura was a strong and compassionate heroine. Loved her.

I love Jo Davis and her Sugarland Blue Noves are no exception. This was a quick read and I felt the ending was a bit rushed but I still loved every minute of the book. There were a couple of unresolved story lines but I am hoping they will be covered in future books. I look forward to the next book in the series.

I wasn't as thrilled with this one as I have been with the others in the series. I liked the stalker mystery, and whatever is brewing with his partner Danny, but I found the central love story lacking and confusing. It had been built up over several books so I kinda expected more, I think.
