When a crew member mysteriously disappears during an historic mission to Venus, Captain Brian Fletcher and his crew are baffled and afraid. Earth’s hostile sister planet had already been difficult, but advanced technology made the carefully planned mission go as smoothly as possible. Still, there were too many unexplained events that had half the crew joking that the planet has “heat gremlins” and the other half wondering if the planet is haunted. A monumental discovery at the dig site will change the future of space travel and provides possible clues as to what might have happened to the missing crew member. A rapidly developing threat will cut the mission short and Fletcher will have to make an impossible decision and time is running out.
When Sandy Frost disappears at a dig site on Venus, she leaves behind her lover, Captain Brian Fletcher, plus her crew. What has happened to Sandy remains a mystery for the crew and Brian, who is grieving her loss as well as contending with new mysteries during his exploration of the planet. Since this is short fiction, I don't want to give away too much. L A Story does a great job with telling the story from Brian's point-of-view both as a captain on a mission as well as a man who has lost the woman he loves. I really liked the fact that even though this is a sci-fi story, it is very grounded in reality and not overwhelmed with technical details. There's a twist at the end and you will definitely want to know more. I did!
I loved this story! I'm a sucker for alternate world tales anyway, but this one is very imaginative. A crew has gone to Venus on a study mission. As they explore, one of their own goes missing under suspicious circumstances (what other ones COULD there be on as harsh a planet as Venus?). There is a need to leave, but they all want to find their missing crew member.
After finding some amazing clues to the planet and the disappearance, the Captain makes a brave decision that risks his very life.
I loved the mystery and characters! I could not put it down and am looking forward to the second installment from this series!!
Well done short story. Very tight. Told an interesting tale with a nice blend of Sci-Fi, romance and mystery. Characters were mostly well fleshed out. I thought a couple of the characters could have been left out, or not really introduced (a la Treks red shirts) as they weren't central to the story and kind of cluttered things a bit. Good job getting in all the details with a limited number of words.
Not fair. I think it's great, but then I wrote it. (Grin)Short story - got good reviews from the Kansas City Review when it was originally published. This is a re-release of the story.
