Repaying a debt of gratitude becomes costlier than Detective Ray Schiller ever imagined possible. A beautiful friend from his past becomes the prime suspect in her estranged husband's murder. Ray’s insistence on her innocence, despite overwhelming evidence, gets him removed from the case for conflict of interest, which leaves the case in the hands of his partner Dick Waverly.

As stubborn as he is loyal, Ray’s inability to maintain a hands-off approach to the investigation leads to conflict of a far more personal nature. His involvement and the killer's twisted mindset collide, leading him on a nightmarish race to save everything he holds dear.

A man is shot dead in his own home, he was getting a divorce and his wife is the only one in the house - cut and dried, case solved.

But oh, no! These things are never that simple.

What we have here is a good old-fashioned murder mystery, complete with all the twists and turns you would hope for to keep you hooked.

Ray Schilling is off the case on this one as he knows the accused (the fact that she's kinda cute doesn't help his relationship with his wife either) but you can't keep a good man down.

I'll admit, I changed my mind on the murderer several times throughout but my first guess was right for a change.

Doering's series is up there with the best, looking forward to moving on to book 4 of 7

This is a good murder, mystery I think readers will enjoy. Starting with the death of Hugh Conley, and all fingers point to his wife Amy as the killer, readers are in for an intriguing read. Ray Schiller is a detective and knows Amy from years before, so that takes him off the case, or does it? It is hard to stay objective but it is also hard to stay away. Ray does neither as his partner Dick Waverly takes control of the investigation. If you like murder, mystery and a tangled web locked together in a suspenseful story, pick this one up.

Detective Ray Schiller finds himself with a conflict of interest when he ends up investigating a young, beautiful friend from his past for the murder of her husband. His investigation brings him and his family into the sights of her husband’s real killer, raising the stakes that he solve the crime.

My only criticism of this book is that people spent too much time smirking. That’s one of my most hated words and every use takes me out of the story. That aside, this is always an excellent traditional detective series. There’s a nice mix of police procedural, mystery, and family life. I like the relationship between Ray and his partner, Dick Waverly. They occasionally butt heads, but are able to work past it and solve the crime. Ray seems very real to me. The plot had tense action, and surprising twists. I found myself thinking about the story when I wasn’t reading it, wondering how everything would turn out. The ending was a surprise.

These are billed as standalones, but I find them better in order. Of course, I ended up reading this one out of order and I still enjoyed it, so take that with a grain of salt. Whenever I see a Ray Schiller story, I know I’m going to enjoy it, whether I’ve read it in the right order or not.

I've always taken pride in the fact that I'm able to zoom in on the bad guy however well the author keeps them hidden in the background. In Ray Schiller's third outing as a detective the brilliant Marjorie Doering resorts to Machiavellian levels of plotting and throws in so many red herrings, each believable in their own way that the reader would find themselves unable to predict the ending. A
nd let me tell you as a reader that it the most satisfying feeling of all.
In Targeted , Author Marjorie Doering goes all out and brings out the big guns- revenge, jealousy, secrets and intrigue leaving her readers spell bound.
If you have a vulnerable defendent on one side, a beloved character from book I, then you also have a deeply jealous once unfaithful wife, and one poor detective stuck in the middle while trying to hunt down a devious and ruthless killer.
While deftly maneuvering the thriller to its exciting conclusion Marjorie takes us on a rippling ride so smoothly executed that you will be left gasping. Definitely a must read thriller writer and someone to always watch out for.

I am new to Marjorie Swift Doering's writings. After reading her book Targeted, I became an enthusiastic fan. She writes in several genres, but since I’m a murder mystery fan, I’ll start there to delve into more of her novels.
Summoned home because of a frantic text from his wife Amy, a disgruntled Hugh Conley downs a drink first before checking on her. He mutters a slur as he mounts the stairs to his bedroom to check on Amy and discovers someone with a handgun waiting for him.
Amy Conley awakens in the morning to find her husband’s bloodied body on their bedroom floor. Police readily dismiss her suspicious statement that she slept through the murder. The evidence is stacked against her, and Amy faces murder charges.
It’s a real treat to read books by seasoned talented writers. Murder mysteries can be tricky, but Doering writes a satisfying story and deftly plants those red herrings and twists in Targeted that left me saying, “How did she do that?” Mystery buffs will love this one.

Dynamic!

I absolutely love this series about Ray Schuller and his partner Dick Waverly. Marjorie pulls you into the book from the very first page, and takes you on a wild rollercoaster ride. Targeted is well written and has very few misspellings. Be prepared for a wild journey with a nasty twist you'll never see coming!
I've read everyone of her books in this series and I highly recommend every one who loves a good murder mystery to read this unforgettable series. I just hope Marjorie will continue writing about Ray Schiller. She has done a fantastic job building all of her characters!

I didn’t write a review after my first reading only during my COVID reading binge did I start writing more reviews, but I’ve read the complete Ray Schiller series and enjoyed it so much I went back and re-read 1 - 6

Targeted was one of my least favorites, probably because of the Gail insecurities and Ray dong dumb things that warrant insecurities.

Still a four for me is probably a 5 for most

Targeted is the most harrowing of Ray Schiller's cases. His efforts to look after a beautiful, young woman to whom he feels indebted, lead into situations that spiral out of control. He never saw the danger coming.
