9 years ago, Tawny had a one night stand with Lucky. The next day he left town and made it big in the rodeo circuit. Lucky didn't know that his one night stand resulted in a daughter. Lucky's daughter has leukemia and needs Lucky for a stem-cell transplant. When Lucky finds out about his daughter, he loves her and becomes an amazing father. Tawny has been in love with Lucky forever and now that he's back in town and a part of her and her daughters life, she has to watch him love another woman.
This book had so many things that I normally hate in a romance novel but Stacy Finz has this amazing way of telling a story that I just couldn't help but really enjoy this one! Sure, I felt like my heart was ripped out a time or two and at times I just wanted to punch Lucky in the face. I loved catching up with the characters from the previous books in this series and I can't wait for the next book!

Those who have been following me know how much I've loved this series. I read the whole series at the beginning of the year and wanted to make sure that before the year ended I reviewed them all. I'm not in a big rush because I left it till it's almost too late.
Up this time we have Lucky and Tawny. You'll love Lucky right away even though he doesn't always make good choices in women. It will take the right woman for him to see that. This is one of the more emotional stories in the series for me. And that's saying a lot since many of them tug at the heartstrings.
I think for me it's because poor Lucky is dealing with a crazy ex-girlfriend (wait till you read her story...who knew) and finding out he has a daughter he never knew about. A sick one to boot.
See what I mean, emotional!
I have to say that sometimes I found myself yelling at characters in this book. I just love it when that happens. I want them to see what was right in front of them. Of course, if they had the book would have been over to fast so it worked out for the best.
This is one of those books that throw a ton at you and you've got to wade through till the end. I really got tired of Raylene and her father. The man is insane and a bully. At times, mostly in the beginning, Lucky acted a little childish about wanting what couldn't be. I did forgive him because of all he was going through. And deep down he's a great guy.
I also liked Tawny even though she didn't tell Lucky about his I understood why. I think. I flip flop on my feelings here. It is what it is and no one can go back and change it so everyone has to move on. I think out of all the stories the most happened in this one. It's a very busy story but that only made the romance part better.
This book is the perfect reason why I read a series in order for the most part. You need to read this before Raylene's story which is at the end. It just works better that way.

Getting Lucky book 5 in Stacy Finz's Nugget California series. This book was funny, aggravating, sweetly romantic and everything I've come to expect from Stacy Finz. Lucky starts off the book a complete moron. Blinded by first love and a fantasy that could never be. He has worked hard to be the best and to prove he isn't trash. Tawny is a strong woman, she has to be, she's been alone for most of her life. She has struggled with a sick father and then a sick child she has worked hard to be the best boot maker around. Lucky is so oblivious and obnoxious at the start but halfway through you start to see him change. Tawny is a hard sell though, when the truth finally does smack Lucky in the face Tawny is still hesitant; once burned twice shy.
Years ago Lucky left Nugget suddenly to avoid scandal. Lucky has been in love with Raylene for just about ever. He knows the dark truth about the family and even though Raylene didn't contradict her father when he accused Lucky of raping Raylene, when in fact they had been sexually active for years behind her boyfriend's back. Lucky was torn up, and in a fit of depression and misery he confided in the first person he came across little Thelma who had to drop out of school to take care of her father and unbeknownst to Lucky worshipped him from afar. Overly emotional and drunk one thing lead to another and Lucky and Thelma had a one night stand.
Ten years has past and Lucky is back, he has made a name for himself in the rodeo circuit and now he's back home and ready to settle down, especially now since Raylene is divorcing her husband. Raylene didn't waste time pulling Lucky back into her web. The only things that could make Lucky happier is his cowboy camp construction finishing and Raylene bringing their relationship out into the open. But everything changes when Tawny shows up on his doorstep asking him to donate stem cells for the sick daughter he never knew he had. Thelma, now Tawny, found out she was pregnant and never able to get ahold of Lucky, and with all the crap he left behind she didn't want him to come back and ruin everything he worked hard to change; she didn't even tell his mother.
Katie is nine years old and is living with acute myeloid leukemia, she has already gone through chemotherapy and radiation, her only change is to find a stem cell donor that matches her HLA antigens. Tawny has done the best she can for her daughter and she really didn't have any other choice but to tell Lucky about his daughter and hope he is a donor match. The more time Lucky spends with his daughter the more he falls in love with her and with Tawny also. Tawny is more wary this time around even though she has never stopped loving Lucky.
Lucky isn't so lucky, Raylene's father is still out to get him and ruin Lucky's hard work. Also Lucky finds out the crew he hired to do the construction work on his cowboy camp is dealing drugs and rustling cattle on the side. Lucky is forced to work with police to get the evidence they need for arrest and things get messier when one of the workers is murdered by Raylene's father.
Overall, this book has action, emotion, laughs; everything I look for in a good book. Getting Lucky is definitely one of the better ones in the series.

I have not read any work by Finz previously however without doing any research I think this story may be part of a number of stories taking place in the town of Nugget. the characters were close knit with a lot of backstory that seemed to tell of other stories previously told. Even so it only added to the charm of this story and didn't impact the enjoyment.
You can't help but get sucked in when it comes to a young child who is fighting for her life. When you have a whole town fighting for it you get drawn in even more.
I don't want to give much away so I will only choose to give a few key statements
1. Where do guys like Lucky come from? Of course he was perfect, great looking and a stand up guy. His only fault was Raylene.
2. If you like your stories steamy, this has some, although not overwhelming in content. The story comes first and then the steam, the way it should in my opinion
BUT
3. Not all steam is good. It felt a little awkward for me reading about Cecilia's steamy bedroom scenes. She is the grandmother in this story (although she was young)
4. I can't get enough of gossipy small towns. It reminds me of growing up and takes me to an oh so familiar place
5. Did I mention a sick child? The only thing that could pull the hearstrings more would have been a sick child with a puppy! Now to be honest we do not see the child suffering a whole lot throughout so the story is not all dark and depressing.
I enjoyed this story and would not hesitate to read others that take place in the fictional town of Nugget.

The format of mmy ebook made this book difficult to read. It messed with the flow of the book.
Plus I HATED Lucky. I thought the fact that he would even be with someone who accused him of RAPING HER gross... ugh I thought he was not deserving for his own book with the way this story was written.

This may just be the best book in the series so far. I love how Ms. Finz spices up a sweet story about family, hope and love by throwing in some mystery and suspense. I really enjoyed this story and I especially loved Tawny.
Tawny Wade is in need of some good luck in her life. Her daughter has leukemia and is in need of a transplant that she can't provide. She's down to her last option - contacting her daughter's father and hoping that he would be a match and donate the bone marrow that she needs. But first she has to tell him ten years after their one night stand that he has a nine-year old daughter that she had kept from him. Tawny loved Lucky Rodriguez back in high school and kept the identity of her baby's father secret to protect Lucky back then, but Lucky only had eyes for Raylene, the daughter of the richest man in town.
Lucky Rodriguez's successful career as a bull rider has earned him celebrity status in his hometown of Nugget, California but it wasn't always so. Ten years ago, Lucky narrowly escaped a false rape accusation when he left town suddenly and joined the rodeo. Now he's back and in for the shock his life when he discovers he has a daughter he never knew about and that he's her last hope for a much needed transplant.
Lucky was a real stand-up guy, attractive, sweet, nice and honorable and a doting father to his daughter, but even nice guys have some weaknesses and Lucky's was Raylene. Lucky has loved her forever and was happy to rekindle his relationship with her but he seemed blind to her faults. It was really annoying that it took him almost getting into trouble AGAIN because of her to see how selfish and vindictive she really was. I love Tawny because she rolled with the hard knocks from life and turned them into positives. Her daughter was her number one priority and she was willing to share her with Lucky but she was smart enough to know that falling for Lucky again was a sure way to heartache.
There was so much going on for everyone in this book. Lucky had to deal with a sick daughter, a demanding girlfriend, suspected criminal activity on his ranch including being named as a murder suspect. For Tawny, coming clean opened her up to new friendships and she learned to let people in and share her burdens. I love how the town stood by them and stepped up to support them through everything. This story is sure to make you love small towns and the close relationships and caring they offer and I definitely recommend it. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. On a funny note, there is nothing like the gossip grapevine in a small community.

This is book number five in this series set in Nugget, California. I've read and loved them all, but you could start here and still enjoy this book. I really liked Tawny Wade and her fierceness -- about her life, her job as a custom Western boot maker and mostly about taking care of her little girl, Katie. Tawny knew Lucky Rodriguez way back when, when the father of his high school girlfriend, Raylene, accused him of rape. Tawny, who'd always had a crush on Lucky, ran into him that same night and while trying to comfort him, one thing led to another, and she became pregnant. Lucky left that same night to follow the rodeo circuit and ended up being fabulously successful, never really remembering that night as anything special or giving her another thought.
Tawny, on the other hand, followed Lucky's career and even befriended his mother, but never let on that the child she had out of wedlock was his or that his mom, Cecelia, was a grandma. Now she has no choice but to approach him because Katie has been fighting leukemia, and her only hope of a normal life is a stem cell transplant. Tawny wasn't a match, but she's desperately hoping Lucky will be.
Lucky is understandably blindsided by the news that he has a daughter and she's nine years old. And since he's again seeing the spoiled Raylene, goodness knows why, he wants a relationship with his daughter, wants her to get to know his mom, but he's not interested in a relationship with Tawny. At least, not at first!
This was an interesting book, lots of topics touched on, lots of sweet romance. Lucky was not my favorite character in the series. I felt he was always pretty self-centered and it took him a LONG time to realize that he wasn't meant to be with his old girlfriend after all. Maybe just that machismo thing going on... He was, however, a really wonderful single dad to his daughter from the moment he found out about her.

I have only read a few books in this series but this has to be my favorite.
Lucky left town 9 years ago when he was accused of rape by his girlfriends family. Before he left he had a one night stand with Tawny and the next day he was gone. He made it big in the rodeo circuit but now he is home to start a new chapter of his life.
Tawny has always had a thing for Lucky as far back as she can remember but after her one night with the cowboy she ends up pregnant. Now 9 years later Tawny needs Luckys help to save their daughters life.
Normally I don't like when a hero has another partner in a story other then the heroine but with all the history between these characters it made sense for the author to go down this road. I'm not saying he slept with them both at the same time but he did hop from one bed to the other. Okay now moving on.
I like the town and how the story developed from page to page. I enjoyed how Lucky started to gain feelings for Tawny even though she was fiercely independent which was an awesome quality she had.
Some of two drama with lucky and what was happening with his new business and his ex was a little much at times. I felt bad for the guy it was one thing after another.
I really did enjoy this book and I can't wait to see more of the sexy tattooed chef Brady. I'm excited his book is next and I can't wait to hear more about his past. Already this man has me intrigued!

LOVED this story!! This entire series has been filled with great stories but I think this might be my favorite so far. Lucky Rodriquez thinks he finally has everything he's ever wanted but he has no idea what else life has in store for him and how full his life can really be.
Stacy Finz has written a wonderful story filled with family, hope, love, and people making the tough choices when the time comes. I high recommend this book as well as the entire series.

If I could give Getting Lucky 10 stars I would. I was mildly disappointed in the 4th book in the series after really enjoying the first three. So I wasn't sure what to expect when I downloaded Getting Lucky. I was blown away. I could hardly put this book down as it seemed every page left me wanting to know what comes next. The usual Nugget gang was all there along with new faces Lucky Rodriquez, his mother Cecelia and Tawny (Thlema) Wade and her daughter Katie. Ms. Finz continues her habit of incorporating lesser romances and story lines in her books along with the main romance. In this book along with Lucky and Tawny's romance, Lucky's mom Cecelia and Jake's. Added to the romance is the heart tugging story of Katie, Tawny and Lucky's daughter who is battling leukemia and running out of medical options to save her and Lucky's relationship with Raylene his long time crush and her father Ray, his attempts to win his fourth consecutive bull riding crown and open a dude ranch. There even some suspense and mystery as Rhys and Jake attempt to solve a murder involving a drug peddling and cattle rustling ring in little Nugget. We already love all the Nugget residents from the Baker's Dozen to the Nugget Mafia and of course all our previous heroes and heroines and Ms. Finz makes us love Lucky, Tawny Katie, Cecelia and Ray right along with them. If you don't shed a tear reading about brave little Katie who the author gives a real personality too, not over sweetened, sickeningly cute as some children are portrayed in these stories, you're reading the wrong genre. Even though Raylene is the villain in this story Ms. Finz humanizes her and makes us feel a modicum of compassion for her. You don't need to have read the other four books in this series to enjoy this story but I strongly encourage you to, both because it will help you further relate to the secondary characters but also because its just a damn good series.
At this point I've read dozens perhaps more than a hundred romance novels and this one stands out as one of the best ever.

Nugget's hometown celebrity returns home.
Tawny's 9-year old daughter, Katie, has acute myeloid leukemia and needs a stem cell transplant. Tawny is not a match and has never told the father that he has a child, except now he's returned to town and she's desperate after chemo and radiation didn't work for Katie. She finally let's him know and Lucky is not too pleased.
Lucky is a champion bull rider who is getting too old to continue being on the circuit. He moves home to start a cowboy camp but construction is behind schedule. He is also secretly hooking up with his high school sweetheart, Raylene. When he finds out he has a daughter, he wants to be a part of her life and help her with her battle with leukemia.
For more than half of this book, I was screaming at Lucky for being such an idiot. Raylene was not well liked by anyone and he legit didn't care how conniving and evil she was because he was in love with saving her. It made me so mad because after everything she did to his mother and to him and he legit doesn't care. But it made for a really good story line.
Lucky's eagerness to show up for Katie made me really pleased. He wanted her in his life and continued to show up despite not knowing her for the first 9 years. I really liked that he put her and her health above all else and did kowtow to external pressure. Tawny's independence is inspiring that despite all the odds she still did well and was able to persevere. She has a thriving business and takes care of her child.
The story line between Jake and Cecilia is way too cute and I really liked the parallels between Tawny and Cecilia, both single mothers who raised wonderful children. Jake is doting and kind towards both Cecilia and Lucky. I think it was a great pairing and addition to the book.

This is one of those books where I really wanted things to work out for the couple even though certain aspects of this book were not appealing to me at all. Lucky is a champion bull rider who has come back to Nugget and purchased a run down camp to turn it in to a stock operation and a team building camp for executives. The girl he was first friends with and later sexually active with (in secret) is back in town and divorcing her husband after she caught him cheating on her with her best friend and they have started seeing each other in secret as Rayleen's father accused Lucky of r@pe 10 years prior which sent him fleeing because Rayleen didn't stand up against her father...and yet he gets back with her, strike 1 for Lucky IMHO. Then one day Tawny shows up at his door to ask him to be tested as a bone marrow donor for her 9 year old daughter one she conceived with him after the incident with Rayleen's father. Strike 2 for Lucky for me. She claims she tried to tell him but didn't want him to come back and "do the right thing" because she was worried Rayleen's dad would go after him and she didn't want her daughter living with the stigma. This was a busy story with a lot of stuff going down including getting Katie (their daughter) treatment. A lot of drama in this one and what I just couldn't get past is Lucky being with Rayleen one day and then deciding he no longer had anything in common with her and getting with Tawny the next day. Strike 3 for Lucky and seriously Tawny have some self respect. While I don't hate this couple being together, the way it all went down just felt slimey and not romantic at all. Overall this book just really wasn't for me.

Lucky Rodriguez grew up in Nugget California. He fell in love with Raylee Roser. Raylee was the daughter of one of the local ranchers. Raylee’s father Ray, walked in on his daughter with Lucky, he accused him of rape and Raylee didn’t defend him. He got drunk, has a one night stand with virgin Thelma (aka Tawny) Ward and leaves town to become a champion bull rider. Of course, Tawny gets pregnant, can’t get ahold of him. Almost ten years have passed and Lucky comes back to town a champion, Raylee comes back after a bitter divorce and Tawny need a donor for her daughter who has leukemia. This is the setup for an unsatisfying love triangle. Throughout the book, you couldn’t understand what Lucky saw in Raylee, she was a skanky narcissist who let people believe that Lucky tried to rape her. Yet he was “in love” with her. When he started to realize that that Raylee is a horrible person, he immediately turns to Tawny. Tawny has a right to be skeptical. When she first hooked up with Lucky, he was drunk and whining about Raylee not standing up for him. He takes her virginity, then leaves town and doesn’t bother to ever contact her again. Tawny deserved someone better than Lucky.

As always with Stacy Finz books, I had a very hard time putting the book down when it was time to eat or sleep. Getting Lucky kept me entranced and I was anxious to find out what would happen next. However, I was also reluctant to finish it because, then I would be done with it and want more! I was frustrated with Lucky being reluctant to choose the right woman as well as Tawny for not letting her feelings be known. I enjoyed the book and the ending and am looking forward to reading "Borrowing Trouble" next!

I think this may be my very favourite of the series so far. The characters had so much depth and I could feel the love between all of them jumping right off of the page! Tawny is a strong, capable and beautiful woman and it was great to see such a strong woman who doesn't "need" to be saved by a man (or anyone else for that matter). Lucky isn't even a real person and I think I may have fallen in love with him a little! 🤭

I first met Lucky in one of Ms Finz's later books and I knew I had to read his story. It was interesting to watch the way he fell for Tawny during the book and fought it most of the way. Tawny on the other hand had been in love with him for years. It was great to see his Mama have a romance too.

The story was well written and easy to follow. I also like how the characters from precise book in the series are woven into each new book. I'm hooked but understand you'll laugh and cry all during the book.

Ugh, adultery, cheating on the cheater, and so many things. Also a little research into how stem cell transplants actually work would be good. The author totally got it wrong.

Are the Nugget books a bit same-y? Perhaps, but in a good way. Superior romance with interesting plot and good characters and a satisfying ending. Can't ask for much more really!

Many people hate the loves ow trope, not me. The masochist in me goes trawling for these books. Done well it can be riveting to follow how the "hero" manages to untangle himself from the ow and fall the h. Invariably many are not done well and can leave this reader internally screaming with the injustice of it all.

Lots of wonderful and exciting things happen in the small mountain town of Nugget, California. This time around there is not only love, a miracle and forgiveness, there is a murder and a drug bust. So needless to say, you may want to free up some time and pick-up up a copy of Getting Lucky, the fifth book from Stacy Finz's Nugget series. You will not be disappointed in any way and the ending will leave you smiling from ear to ear.
This is the love story between professional bull rider Lucky Rodriguez and custom boot maker Tawny Wade. Lucky and Tawny have known each other since grade school, where handsome Lucky had the world at his feet, while shy Tawny did her best to stay out of everyone's way. They shared one passionate night together nine years ago and as a result, a beautiful little girl was brought into this world. Tawny has done a wonderful job of raising Katie all by herself, choosing not to disrupt Lucky's life, in fear of the ramifications. Now Katie is fighting a fatal disease and Lucky's stem cells are needed in order to save Katie's life.
Lucky turns out to be a truly remarkable father, which makes both Tawny and Katie very happy. Tawny has always been in love with Lucky, so seeing him every day, absorbing his comfort, and being a member of his family is sometimes difficult, especially since he is in love with another woman. However and overtime, he comes to realize that Tawny is his true soulmate.
I really liked this story and can't wait to read Ms. Finz's latest book in this series which is due to be released in February. This story is like a modern version of Little House on the Prairie, with its very supportive neighbors, a town gossip, a tiny police force and a core family. Tawny and Lucky are well-defined and there was never a moment that I did not want them to be together. Ms. Finz creates amazing sexual tension between the main characters and their attraction was hot both in and out of the bedroom. The secondary characters and subplots are interesting and add a lot of genuineness to the story. Overall, this is a well-written book with a cast of characters you can truly get obsessed with.

While I love Stacy’s writing style and the Nugget series overall, I must admit that this is my least favorite of all seven Nugget books.
This is the first Nugget book where I really didn’t like the hero for the better part of the book and still felt “eh” about him at the end. While Lucky Rodriguez had many great qualities at the beginning, his complete infatuation and blindness when it came to his first love Raylene irritated the heck out of me. That, and the fact that he was so enamored by her that he was oblivious to the fact that something fishy was going on at his ranch, I wanted to strangle him. After his time on the rodeo/PBR circuit and experiences on the road, he really shouldn’t have been so clueless. On the flip side, his connection to both his mother and newfound daughter pulled on my heart and I loved how he was “all in” as a father from the get-go.
I really liked the strength of Tawney’s character and the fact that she has created a successful business, even with limited education. I also like how she was wary of Lucky and his motives when he started making the moves on her.
I would give this 3 stars because the writing style was still enjoyable and I did enjoy aspects of the story, including Katie’s journey to health and the romance between Jake and Cecelia.
