I'm going to say 2.5 but this was incredibly disappointing for me. Let's jump into why. Spoilers.
FMC:
Now I didn't exactly love Ivy in book one. She was the angel so she was a little naive and lost and it's never my favorite lead character but I gave her some grace. In this book she was incredibly annoying. She has no convictions, no plans or goals she is all over the place. She feels like a book one character not a book two character. I found myself asking "what? How?" When they mentioned her changing so much recently and really coming into her own. The only thing she gained in this book is the ability to be super stubborn and annoying to her own detriment. I am not sure I'll pick this book back up because of how frustrating she was.
MMC:
Okay. So. The big deep dark secret that you won't just tell her and fix your lives is that you knew she was a Phoenix when you rejected her. Now maybe it's because I don't have the next books context but that doesn't seem like a real reason. Not the rejecting part, I guess sure I see that. But not being honest now? This also goes in line with this Phoenix book that they are decoding. Why not just tell her the information about herself. You are hiding information about what she is. Why? They just continue to make such stupid decisions over and over and it's not an enjoyable will they won't they. It's a bunch of main characters who are actually pretty stupid.
Plot:
What plot? She finds out she's a phoenix, we go through the death memory wipe twice andddddd she's super mad and pouty about her mates. How are people friends with you if that's all you have to your personality? Every conversation with anyone else in the book? You guessed it mate related. Every single chapter and every single thought? You guessed again mate related. Jesus figure it out or dont but the whole plot is just her being pissy and not accepting help when she has zero life skills to help herself. At the point you are either a mate or a bad guy which fine, but they aren't really doing anything to address the bad guys and she "hates" 🙄 her mates.
Honestly this one felt like a drawn out part of book one and yes we get smut but not a ton else. I am not sure I'll be moving forward.

What in the Body Betrayal Syndrome did I just read?
I was disappointed with the first book, but book two actually made me mad.
Actual quote from the author's afterword:
Here’s to another book of grovelling. She deserves it.
Another? That implies that grovelling already exists, and I looked everywhere, and couldn't find a sign of it. We saw one nice speech and that was about it. And while I do agree that Ivy deserves some major grovelling, I'm skeptical that the author feels the same. She had the ability to make that happen. She could've written a book where the MMCs worked hard to earn Ivy's forgiveness. Instead, she took shortcuts that left a bad taste in my mouth.
I complained at the end of book one that Ivy looked like a doormat for giving in to Teddy when he'd done nothing at all to earn her forgiveness. For a moment, I thought this book was trying to course-correct. Ivy's memory came flooding back, and along with it came all her anger. At Teddy as much as the others.
I guess I should be careful what I wish for. I think I'd almost prefer a doormat FMC who forgives too easily. At least she's finding a bit of happiness. It's better than what we got here: a furious FMC who keeps ending up having sex with the MMCs because the author took away her ability to withhold consent. You can dress it up with neutral phrasing like "grounding", but it's still BBS.
Actually, BBS might be too mild of a desription. In a typical BBS situation, the character is capable of ignoring her urges and walking away. But Ivy can't walk away without dire consequences, like her magic exploding and people getting hurt.
So she's rightfully angry at these guys, hasn't forgiven them, despite wanting to be able to, and yet, still has to give up her dignity to be serviced by them. Can you even imagine the shame that would cause a woman? I'm not judging the MMCs here for participating, since it helped reduce Ivy's pain and suffering. I'm judging that this plot device was even introduced prior to the FMC forgiving the MMCs. Make her mad, and then take away her choices. Way to protect your FMC.
Maybe that explains the lack of groveling after all. Why work hard to earn forgiveness when you can get sex simply by pissing the FMC off so badly that she starts to overheat.
The reveal at the end was ridiculous. She gave each of the guys a chance to tell the truth and they all refused. For that to be the actual secret? If she already hated them, what was the downside to telling her the truth? She might hate them harder? I really don't get their motivation? If I were these guys, I'd be confessing every bad thing I'd ever done while she was still angry. Get it all on the table while things are bad, and then things could only get better. Did they think they could hide it forever? That she would just shrug and be fine with not knowing?
I'm also baffled by the fact that Francesca and Odessa were still included in the meetings. She literally murdered a classmate and faced no consequences? No expulsion? Not even detention? And Ivy had to sit at the same table and suffer through her vitriol without any adults putting a stop to it?
What kind of school is this?

ends on a cliffhanger but you find out why they rejected her
This sucked me in and I could not stop reading. It immediately picks up where book one left off. I did have to familiarize myself with the MMC‘s again though but it was nice to have callbacks to book one to kind of make you go….Oh yeah, that’s right that did happen and it was with that MMC..
In this book, you get more about Ivy’s capabilities as a phoenix and her magic… and you do you get more interactions with the “hated” mates that turn sexual. Most of these moments are forced proximity or “fuck or die” situations rather than true attraction, spontaneous moments.
There are some surprise twists, and oh my God moments. Some of those moments lead to Ivy basically having four bodyguards 24/7 that she hated, but didn’t exactly hate.
The biggest thing in this book is that you finally learned why they rejected her. And you learned that they are all big fat liar liar pants on fire… and that the implications of their lie are pretty devastating. And the fact that none of them grew the balls to tell her themselves, and it was outed by arguably the worst person that could do it. And they all were OK sleeping with her and still lying to her about some pretty serious stuff.
Honestly, Ivy has had to deal with a lot because of these 4 guys and her dad and brother … so like all the men in her life basically (go figure) … so I’m rooting for the girl if she has a villain arc. 🤷🏻♀️ she’s a queen that’s gonna burn everything down GOT style baby ~~

What in the world happened?! 🤯
Book 1 was such a delightful shocker! 🎉 It was binge-worthy, packed with mystery, angst, and those juicy enemies-to-lovers/rejected mates vibes. It ended on a cliffhanger that had me chomping at the bit to jump into Book 2. 📚🔥
But alas… this one totally lost me. 😩
It felt like the author had this epic story in her head but only managed to scribble down half of it. I spent the entire book screaming WHY? 🤔
- Why is there a secret group? 🕵️♀️
- Why were all the kingdoms brought together knowing there are villains lurking among them? 🤷♀️
- Why are her parents the way they are? 🤨
- Why is everyone so angry with her? 😡
- Why do the Mean Girls exist? 🙄
- Why does anyone make the decisions they make? 🤷♂️
And the kicker? These questions didn’t make me more curious—they made me feel like I’d accidentally skipped a whole bunch of chapters. 📖➡️📖
Instead of answers or meaningful clues, we got more relationship drama, more “why did you reject me,” more girl time, and a ton of spice… while the actual plot barely budged. 🐢
I don’t mind a slow reveal, but this didn’t feel like a carefully crafted mystery. It felt like I was expected to read a story that was still marinating in the author’s head. 🧠💭

Ivy is a phoenix. her father is a POS. Leo, the leader of the second kingdom is bat shit crazy. He wants Ivy, and i’m assuming just because she’s a phoenix.
The guys seem to have psycho parents as well. There’s one good apple in the bunch. Ivy’s mom is also a phoenix. Add another psycho to the list.
This entire book is a run around. Ivy demands to know why they rejected her. We don’t get answers until literally the last damn page. 🫠🫠 But we do actually get answers. However, it ends there. That’s it. Ivy’s pheonix takes over and poof, we’re done.

Ah! What and ending...
I love Ivy! She may have been shielded from the world and put on display, but with her magic coming in, she is getting more and more bold and speaking out for herself. This book was a wild ride and we FINALLY get an answer to the one question I've been wanting answered since the very beginning of book 1. I do feel like there needs to be some more groveling, but Ivy isn't fully giving in to them unless its absolutely necessary. We get more background on everyone and some things are starting to make more sense. I cannot wait until the next one after that cliffhanger!

Is this written by some kind of AI or is the writer ESL? These books are littered with nonsensical malapropisms. I can’t even bring myself to think about the issues w/r/t the plot, the pacing or world-building because the basic grammar and lexicon are so off-putting.

A lot less polished than the 1st book
I noticed more repeated word usage and clunky writing which made reading feel less enjoyable. I'm not sure if editing was rushed or if a different editor was used. I honestly loved the first book and found it riveting but the second book felt less compelling. The sakes kept going up but I didn't feel my emotional attachment grow or connect with the characters as deeply. Yes it was a roller coaster ride but not in a fun way, the heights less purposefully engineered and more chaotic. All together I think the book might need a 2nd look through to resolve some of these issues.

The FMC is so freaking annoying. Holding a grudge through two whole books is diabolical. She uses her mates and is super bitchy. I cannot find any redeeming qualities there. All the female characters in this book are awful, except the ones that are barely in it. I can’t with this book.

I loved seeing Ivy begin to fight back, demand answers, and take control of a power she does not fully understand.
Her magic is dangerous, unpredictable, and potentially devastating, which adds so much tension to the story. Ivy is forced to rebuild her memories piece by piece while trying to work out who she can trust. Every new discovery seems to create even more questions, and the secrets surrounding her resurrection, her abilities, and Neverbound Academy kept me completely hooked.
The biggest change from Angel of Ashes is the behaviour of Sax, Teddy, Archer, and Baron. Their rejection has quickly transformed into intense, obsessive protection, and they are finally beginning to understand the consequences of how they treated Ivy. They might have once tried to deny their bonds, but now they cannot stay away from her. Their jealousy, possessiveness, and desperate need to keep her safe bring plenty of tension and chemistry.
I enjoyed seeing Ivy’s relationship with each of her mates develop differently. Sax, Teddy, Archer, and Baron each bring something unique to the group, but there are still so much anger, resentment, and unresolved pain between them. Forgiveness does not come easily, and I appreciate that Ivy does not simply forget everything they put her through. They have to face her fury and begin earning their place beside her. The bond may connect them, but trust is something they still have to fight for.
This book delivers far more action, danger, and magical discovery while continuing to build the complicated relationship between Ivy and her four mates. The chemistry is hotter, the emotions are stronger, and the possessive energy from Sax, Teddy, Archer, and Baron is on another level. There are also plenty of twists, betrayals, and unexpected enemies waiting in the shadows.
Reaper of Ruin answers some of the questions left behind in Angel of Ashes, but it also creates even more mysteries. Just when I thought I understood where the story was going, KC Kean changed everything and left me desperate to know what happens next.
This series continues to be completely addictive. With Ivy learning to embrace what she has become, four rejected mates turning into obsessive protectors, dangerous magic, hidden enemies, and another brutal cliffhanger, Reaper of Ruin proves that resurrection is not a second chance. Every new discovery seems to create even more questions, and the secrets surrounding her resurrection, her abilities, and Neverbound Academy kept me completely hooked.
The biggest change from Angel of Ashes is the behaviour of Sax, Teddy, Archer, and Baron. Their rejection has quickly transformed into intense, obsessive protection, and they are finally beginning to understand the consequences of how they treated Ivy. They might have once tried to deny their bonds, but now they cannot stay away from her. Their jealousy, possessiveness, and desperate need to keep her safe bring plenty of tension and chemistry.
I enjoyed seeing Ivy’s relationship with each of her mates develop differently. Sax, Teddy, Archer, and Baron each bring something unique to the group, but there are still so much anger, resentment, and unresolved pain between them. Forgiveness does not come easily, and I appreciate that Ivy does not simply forget everything they put her through. They have to face her fury and begin earning their place beside her. The bond may connect them, but trust is something they still have to fight for.
This book delivers far more action, danger, and magical discovery while continuing to build the complicated relationship between Ivy and her four mates. The chemistry is hotter, the emotions are stronger, and the possessive energy from Sax, Teddy, Archer, and Baron is on another level. There are also plenty of twists, betrayals, and unexpected enemies waiting in the shadows.
Reaper of Ruin answers some of the questions left behind in Angel of Ashes, but it also creates even more mysteries. Just when I thought I understood where the story was going, KC Kean changed everything and left me desperate to know what happens next.
This series continues to be completely addictive. With Ivy learning to embrace what she has become, four rejected mates turning into obsessive protectors, dangerous magic, hidden enemies, and another brutal cliffhanger, Reaper of Ruin proves that resurrection is not a second chance. It is a reckoning.

The second installment of the Neverbound Academy series is complete and even better than the first. It picks up right where book one left off and does not let up until the end.
Ivy is coming to terms with her newfound magic and the supernatural she has become. Her mates want to protect her, her enemies want to use her, but weeding out friend from foe gets more difficult with each passing day. She is connecting to Sax, Baron, Archer, and Teddy more and more as they try to make amends for the past. Each has a hand in keeping her grounded. But keeping her safe takes all four of them as threats keep coming from every side.
There is so much more that is learned about each of the boys, their personal history, and their relationship to Ivy. Baron is still trying to be the big holdout but fails spectacularly. He cannot resist her any more than the others. Besides, his dragon adores her so he needs to stay in her good graces. Archer continues to be his grumpy self, except when it comes to Ivy. He cannot help but be drawn in by her and his softer protective side shines through. Teddy continues to be a golden retriever lapping up every bit of affection she tosses his way and it is adorable. Sax and his white tiger shifter alter ego are just as attached to the fiery Phoenix as the others. His tiger is willing to protect Ivy no matter the cost to his personal safety. As a collective they are managing to slowly get under her skin and win her over. Lots of progress within the group that made for some very interesting reading. Including when things start to heat up between Ivy and the boys.
As with all of KC Kean's novels, there is so much action, tension, suspense, and twists and turns of the plot that it is impossible to put this down. It is hard to say much more without spoilers, but I will say I felt so engaged and invested in this book. The plot moves along like a tidal wave that swept me up and carried me all the way to the end in what felt like no time at all.
As always, the Queen of the cliffhangers strikes again so we will have to wait to see what happens next. I, for one, will be ready and waiting. I recommend getting a jump on the series before the next book releases.

Tried for book 2 anyways
I struggled hard with book 2, and wanted to see if book 2 would improve. I'm not entirely sure it did. Watch out, as my review will contain spoilers below

I didn't like that only 1 of the guys she's slept with so far wasn't technically forced upon her by these grounding, or rejuvenation ceremonies. If she hadn't needed to partake in them, it's doubtful that the FMC would have ever slept with any of them.
I struggled with it feeling like it was non stop crazy, while nothing ever really progressed. She didn't really get any control over her magic, wasn't immediately training for how to shift into a Phoenix, even after seeing someone else turn into one.
I hated how there wasn't much in the way of groveling, and it still bothers me.
The big deal for me that has bothered me the whole time, is that Odeza is never truly punished in book 1, and then when the 3 ladies straight up hang her to death, the FMC makes me so mad by doing NOTHING. She just keeps attending meetings and classes with these women, knowing they intend to kill her again whenever possible. She doesn't even get them removed from the secret club, or barely tell anyone. They're freaking murderers... why wouldn't she assume they're capable of killing others too? Or why hasn't she been taught more self defense? Why does the brother get forgiven so easily? They keep saying she's got a ton of power, but so far after 2 books, she can only light herself on fire, or be reborn. Shouldn't she also have a secondary power, like everyone else seems to? Is she just a fire Phoenix and no other gift?
I will say that I think the FMC was a little more enjoyable to read this book, she was bolder. But she still wasn't very smart with the choices she insisted on making.
Baron improved some, thankfully. I enjoyed the mother of the twins. I loved the dragons, and when they talked with her. I liked a lot of concepts and world ideas. Maybe this series just isn't the one for me.

I loved the book one cliffhanger and couldn't wait to find out more. The opening chapter sets the pace as Ivy finds herself at the hands of her father who shows just how evil he is. How Ivy and Hugo ended up being nice people with the parents they had is beyond me! Their mother is no better and I'm not even sure who the big bad is yet.
Ivy has a lot to deal with; amnesia, deciding who to trust and absolutely vile mean girls. I cannot wait for the those girls to get their comeuppance; how they are wandering about unpunished is beyond me. And Silas is starting to toe the line being just a little too keen to get Ivy on his own. I am intrigued by his reveal though and interested to see if this will come into play later.
High points were definitely Alaric being an absolute goner for Ivy, Ember's love life and Ivy's new girl gang. Everyone needs a Greta!
The guys can't help themselves though and this definitely felt like two steps forward, one step back! Archer is my favourite currently but they are back to square one on the grovel front. I don't think its a big surprise as to why the guys are able to slip into protective mode so quickly in this book when you finally find out the reason as to why they rejected Ivy in the first place. I am disappointed Hugo kept so many secrets from Ivy too though; he knew what she was going through and honestly I think he should be grovelling as much as the others!
The cliffhanger isnt as bad as book one but the hints about the other parents plans have me thinking there is a lot more still to come.
My interpretation of the star system;
3 stars - I enjoyed it; would read the author again
4 stars - I really liked it; I am invested and definitely want more from this author/series
5 stars - I loved it; I engaged with this book completely until I finished it and it is one I will re-read

You’re immediately thrown back into the story as this picks up after that shocking end of the first book, and we find out what magic it is that Ivy holds; and oh boy is it about to rock the Fifth Kingdom let alone her and her mates. However her newfound power puts her in a portion of vulnerability of those who wan to harm or use her…
Get the sense that there is more to some members of the ‘secret group’ that at there to protect the Fifth Kingdom, and that a that they might have other intentions for our girl especially ass this story progresses.
Ivy has completely relaistic reactions to her mates in this book. They have som heartfelt moments, hot ones and utterly infuriating ones! There is push and pull between them, reflecting the minute progress they’ve made but also the fact they are still keeping secrets and honestly driving her up the wall. Yet they a super protective of her and definitely coming to the realisation they may have been wrong in their rejection :O there are some sweet words but unless their actions back it up I fear Ivy may just incinerate them :’D
Love the girl time scenes and how the girls really stand by Ivy to try and truly help her find heslelf and what it is she needs from life: no what is expected of her or what everyone else needs from her.
There’s plenty of actin to keep the story moving intertwined with the character development making it an engaging read. I just expect some serious grovel after that shocking reveal right at the end!

Book 2 picked up right where the first one left off, which I really appreciated because I needed answers after that ending. The story kept me hooked from start to finish, even though it seemed to answer one question only to leave me with three more.
I really enjoyed seeing Ivy grow throughout this book. She's still dealing with so much, but she's becoming stronger and building relationships with people she can actually rely on. I also loved seeing her friendships develop—it was a nice change from all the drama and made the world feel more complete.
The guys are definitely making progress, but they're still frustrating at times. The grovelling has finally started, yet they're continuing to keep important secrets, which makes it hard to fully forgive them. I understood some of their reasoning once more was revealed, but I still wanted Ivy to make them work a little harder for her trust.
The family dynamics and political intrigue are becoming even more interesting, and I'm really curious to see where everything is heading. There are so many hidden agendas and unanswered questions that it's impossible not to want to keep reading.
The mean girls are as awful as ever, and I'm still waiting for them to get what they deserve. On the other hand, I loved the found-family feel that's starting to develop around Ivy.

Reaper of Ruin reminded me exactly why KC Kean is one of my favorite authors. I’ve loved almost every book I’ve picked up from her, and the Neverbound Academy series is no exception. One of my favorite things about her as an author is that she can write completely different kinds of stories and somehow make every single one addictive. Featherstone Academy is still one of my all-time favorite series, and this one is quickly climbing the ranks.
Out of all of Ivy’s “hated mates,” Baron is easily my favorite. I wish I had a better explanation than “he just is.” Maybe it’s the man bun. Maybe it’s because he’s a dragon rider. Maybe it’s his quiet, gentle giant energy mixed with the fact that he’s just a little bit broken. Whatever the reason, I found myself looking forward to every scene he was in.
As much as I loved Baron, Alaric completely stole the spotlight. He is hands-down my favorite character in the series so far. The scene with Ivy, Lucky, and Alaric had me laughing out loud, and now I’m hoping we get a lot more of the three of them together. I’d also love even more of Ivy and Alaric’s inner dialogue because those interactions were some of my favorite moments in the book.
KC Kean continues to expand this world while somehow answering questions and creating even more at the same time. Every reveal made me want to keep reading, and by the final chapter I was already wishing I had the next book in my hands.

I need more!
Reaper of Ruin is the second book in this amazing why choose series. This series has it all...fated mates, magic, secrets within secrets, and a FMC that's going to burn down her enemies.
I don't know which was a bigger shock...the beginning of this book or the cliffhanger at the end. That's how you know you're reading a great story. And because I don't want to ruin anything I'll keep the details vague.
I love that Ivy discovers her magic and that it gives her some amazing gifts. Although it does bring out more enemies, both familiar and new. I'm shocked that the academy doesn't do more about certain students. They seem to be very nonchalant and I wonder if that's on purpose. I'm very suspicious of the motives of some of the people at Neverbound.
I also love that Ivy gets to meet the twins mother and their sisters. They are so entertaining and they help give Ivy something she desperately needs. Meadow gets a gold star as a bestie and so does sweet Alaric for being so protective.
Teddy, Baron, Sax and Archer will have to grovel a lot more in the next book. They still have a lot to work out and I'm sure more secrets will come to light, but they can't protect Ivy if she loses herself to her magic...nevermind the threats from the other kingdoms.
I can't wait for book three!

The world-building expands in all the right ways, pulling you deeper into the dark, gripping atmosphere that makes this series so addictive. The character dynamics are razor-sharp, the chemistry sizzles, and the plot twists keep you guessing (and turning pages way past your bedtime). K.C. knows how to write a compelling narrative that keeps the momentum relentless from the first chapter to the jaw-dropping cliffhanger.
If you loved Angels of Ashes, prepare to have your mind blown—and good luck waiting patiently for Book 3, because the craving for the next installment is entirely real. An absolute must-read for K.C. Kean fans!

Book two picks up exactly where book 1 finished thankfully.
The storyline has some good moments and pieces of utter perfection.
Ivy’s relationships grow throughout this book with her guys and outwith which is nice to see, I love seeing girl time on page and wish that it was more common.
The guys have started to grovel, well at least some of them, but it still feels like they are holding things closer to their chest than would be preferred so whilst there is some progression it’s hindered by their lack of clarity on certain situations.
The mean girls be mean girling which I’m throughly enjoying its adding an almost “other women” vibe to the story without it being present.
The spice starts to really steam up, especially with Ivy needing it, however this isn’t my favourite of tropes as I feel it often leads to smut for the sake moving from scene to scene rather than it feeling “natural” especially as she hasn’t - understandably - forgiven her “hated mates” for everything that they previously done.
In conclusion I think it is a good book but is missing some elements that would make it great in my mind.

I completely devoured this book and yelled in frustration when it ended because I needed more. I loved how Ivy’s relationship developed differently with each of the guys and how she refuses to give in and just forgive them just because they are her fated mates. I also really enjoyed seeing the change in the guys and their behavior. All of them seeing Ivy die and coming back at the end of the last book bonded them in a way that nothing else could. Now if they would just realize that nothing is going to stay secret and everything will eventually come out, it would make everyone’s lives a lot easier. 🥴
There’s so much that happens in this book. So much information comes out and I swear Ivy has enemies around every corner. At this point, there are very few characters in this world that I trust. And of course KC leaves us on one of her cliffhangers so I’m seriously jonesing for the next book already. I swear everything that KC Kean writes puts me in a chokehold and I just keep asking for more, and this book was no different. Now seriously, when can we get the next book??? 👀

Wow - two books in and I’m in awe struck at the awesomeness of this series!
Ivy is strong in her own way- but also been so manipulated, that it’s caused her to not trust that strength. The guys (Teddy, Archer, Sax, Baron) - oh let me count the ways they are so Hot and I also want to 🥊 them so hard for their lack of confidence in Ivy being able to handle secrets and their truths.
Then we get to the ones that want to control / manipulate and use all of them for their fated mate power couple status and we end up with an entire new problem. This group has more people trying to stab them in the back literally and figuratively than any book I’ve read. It has me on the edge of my seat with its “who, what, where, why” feeling of suspense. With it only being book 2 - we are ending with still so many questions. But dang is it a fun ride. Because feeling the heated tension and anxiety of the relationship dynamics has me enjoying it so much!
I am seriously obsessed 😍 and can’t recommend this book & series enough!
