Thinner, Fitter, Happier: Dancing Will Change Your Life!

Rate this book
“Do you need a BOOST? Are you in a RUT? Are you up for more FUN? More FRIENDS? Is it time to reconnect with your PARTNER?…or FIND one? YOU OUGHT TO BE DANCING!”

In this upbeat and informative book, writer, dancer and health care professional Dr. Marian Condon promotes dancing as an amazingly healthful and enjoyable form of exercise that transforms lives. Through her own experience, interviews with more than 40 individuals, and research findings, the book presents solid evidence that dancing helps people lose weight, tone up, stand taller and carry themselves with more confidence. The combination of music and movement lifts spirits and banishes blues. The inherent camaraderie and fellowship make even shy and socially anxious dancers feel comfortably at home in their dance communities. Communication and connection between even long-time partners is enhanced. Because of the intense focus required, dancing is also great for the brain - it has been shown to be more effective than any other leisure activity at staving off dementia. Dr. Condon busts the myth that dancing is only for the young, slim and athletic. “If you can WALK,” she writes, “you can DANCE!”

I read this book because a friend of mine at my old dance studio actually wrote it and includes lots of personal testimony from other people I met/friends I know.

I may already have believed the benefits of dancing, but it was still a great read!

Marian not only goes over all of the health and mental health benefits of taking up dancing, but also describes the main dances, dance terms you might be confused about, and how to go about getting into competitions, if you're so inclined. Not to mention, she also lampoons all of your reasons for putting off starting to learn to dance, haha.

My favorite part was reading the testimonies of people who had been dealing with various social and normal anxiety and used dancing as a therapy. I have social anxiety, myself, and after I threw myself into dancing it got a hell of a lot better. My story isn't the most drastic, but some of the ones in this book are and I'm amazed and proud of the people who've overcome their anxiety demons via dancing.

My only criticism would be the few chapters going over the terminology of dancing and how competitions work, etc, because that stuff, while good information for wannabe-dancers, doesn't seem relevant to the title of the book.

Overall, if you have ever considered learning a few steps, you should definitely grab this book and give it a read!
