Ian Wells is every woman’s fantasy. He’s played action stars, superheroes, and even a dashing nobleman. But when the hottest actor in Hollywood travels to the mountains of Western North Carolina to film, no past role could prepare him for a woman who isn’t dazzled by his main character energy.
Joan Judd likes her life the way it is. She keeps busy as the head farmer at her family’s orchard, and takes pride in her fierce independence. But when a disruptive film crew shows up in town, her meticulous routine gets thrown out the window the moment she finds a celebrity passed out on her lawn.
With every exasperating run-in with Mr. Big Shot, Joan learns more than she ever expected. Like the realization that Ian is raising his young nephew, and the A-list celebrity might not be as spoiled and incapable as she once assumed. While Ian is annoyingly charming and unbearably attractive, he’s also kind to her family and committed to helping the town. And most troubling of all, he seems bound and determined to win her over.
The very idea of a relationship with the megastar is preposterous. The fact that he’s twenty-nine to her thirty-six is another big pill to swallow. Not to mention that he’s leaving in a few months and taking his adorable nephew with him.
If they both know their meet-cute isn’t meant to be, then why can’t they keep their hands—and their hearts—to themselves?
Book #5 in the Kirby Falls small-town contemporary series follows the steamy slow-burn romance between Hollywood’s top leading man and the grouchy farmer who doesn’t have time for spoiled celebrities. ‘Leaf Well Enough Alone’ is a full-length novel filled with humor, heat, and a heartwarming happily ever after.
Laney Hatcher is a firm believer that there is a spreadsheet for every occasion and pie is always the answer. She is an author of stories both old and new where the HEAs are always guaranteed. Often too practical for her own good, Laney enjoys her life in the southern United States with her husband, children, and incredibly entitled cat.
Raise your hand if you love a down bad hero 🖐🏼 Well, this one falls hard and then pines for 200 pages. Slow burns are kind of my favorite. As a reader, I love them because they give the relationship time to develop. And as an author, all that on-page getting to know each other stuff is the absolute best to write. And these two get to know each other through... • Accidental stalking • Running a 5K • Stealing a goat • Spoiled celebrities learning how to cook • Eldest daughters learning how to rely on someone else (did you feel personally attacked by this one, too?)
*Apologies in advance for the long essay I've written about this book!
Leaf Well Enough Alone was the perfect way to say goodbye to Kirby Falls, even if I still wasn't emotionally prepared to leave.
Joan Judd has been such a steady presence throughout this entire series—protective, fiercely loving, hardworking, and just grumpy enough to make finally getting her HEA feel completely like everything it should be. Watching her completely unravel over Ian Wells and his nephew, George, was everything I wanted for her. My notes for this book literally say, "dismantled by a seven-year-old," and honestly, that is the best possible description of Joan's relationship with Georgie.
Ian and Joan's romance develops in a way that feels incredibly natural for who they are. Joan doesn't believe someone like Ian could be seriously interested in her, which makes watching him prove otherwise so satisfying. Every interaction builds on the last until suddenly all the banter, frustration, attraction, and reluctant affection turns into something impossible to ignore. And truly, Ian basically stalking Joan into helping him train for the Thanksgiving 5K while she calls him the "lurker with the stamina problem" will live in my head forever.
I loved watching Ian and George slowly fall under Kirby Falls' spell. Seeing Ian become part of Joan's world—and her family—added so much heart to the story. His friendship with Brady was one of my favorite unexpected dynamics because they are absolutely bros by the end of this book. George steals every scene he's in, Ralph the goat deserves a formal shoutout, and getting to spend time with so many familiar faces again made this feel like the warmest kind of hug.
This book has everything I've loved about Kirby Falls from the very beginning: humor, swoon, small-town charm, unforgettable side characters, and a community that feels like home.
Choosing a favorite Kirby Falls book remains impossible, which honestly feels right. This series has been such a special place to visit, and Leaf Well Enough Alone was the perfect final stop.
Laney Hatcher also left some very interesting breadcrumbs for what comes next—and based on her social media, I know exactly where to look. I will be waiting impatiently.
What I liked: Yes. Everything. All of it. All of Hatcher's writing is equal parts relationship building, character building, banter, and heart, so clearly I love it. There is a realness to this one following my girl Joan that put a little sparkle in my heart. The slow, yearning, patient page-by-page build of two people very gently falling in love warmed the cockles of my little heart. Every single book in this series has been like tucking into sheets warmed fresh from the dryer. Please pick up Kirby Falls POST HASTE. Also, I love Ralph.
What I didn't like: The only thing I didn't like about this book is that it's the last book in Kirby Falls and that makes me sad. But really, no notes.
This is the final installment in the Kirby Falls series - this series is so perfect! It takes place in the mountains of NC, centered around apple orchards. These books are beautiful, and I have fallen in love with the people of Kirby Falls.
In Leaf Well Enough Alone, Hollywood has taken over a portion of Judd’s Orchard to film a movie starring heartthrob Dorian Masters. Our favorite grumpy older sister, Joan Judd, thinks she can avoid all the chaos and attention - but Ian Wells (Dorian’s real name) has other plans. Little by little, he breaks through her walls, turning friendship into something much deeper. But what happens when filming ends and he has to return to his real life?
I was so excited when I found out Joan was getting her own book! She’s hardworking, fiercely devoted to her family and orchard, and absolutely refuses to tolerate nonsense - but she’s also endearing. And Ian is a gem. Their relationship felt so genuine and sweet, and I loved watching Joan slowly open her heart. This book was charming, heartfelt, and such a satisfying addition to the series!
Author Laney Hatcher knocks it out of the park in this final installment of the Kirby Falls Series.
This story features apple farmer Joan Judd and Ian, the a-list Hollywood actor who has invaded her space in more ways than one while he shoots his newest film.
The lives Joan and Ian lead could not be more different. The opposites attract, black cat and golden retriever vibes here are strong. I loved that Joan did not care about impressing Ian. Instead, she’s the same Joan Judd readers have seen throughout the series, while Ian continually tries to impress her by learning down-to-earth, normal person skills, like laundry and making coffee.
While Joan is unapologetically her same self, readers also get to see a much softer side of her — a side that doesn’t want to hurt people even with her honesty, and a side that is patient and understanding. This comes through especially during interactions with Ian’s young nephew, George. Scenes between Joan and George were some of my favorites in this book.
Hatcher is a talented author and captures small-town dynamics in a way that feels simultaneously realistic and incredibly charming.
While this book can be read as a standalone, I recommend reading the series in order for a richer experience. It’s fun to see all of the interactions with the other Kirby Falls folks, especially since the community vibes are so strong in this book.
I’m obsessed but I’m also sad that this is the last book for this series. If you are looking for a cozy romance series, this is the series for you.
Ian and Joan meet when he’s filming a movie on her family farm. Funny thing is Ian stars in her newly favorite movie. Joan is a farmer and is older than Ian. But he doesn’t care. He likes Joan and wants to get to know her. Watching Joan let her walls down little by little for a man she swears she can’t stand due to him being famous is so fun to read about. She thinks all actors are stuck up and too far into fame to care about anyone. She ends up seeing that isn’t who Ian is. Ian lets her in one his biggest secret about his nephew, George. Watching them becomes a little family of three will warm your heart.
I’m so sad that this is it for Kirby falls but I’m so excited to see what else Laney has in store for all of us!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I received the ARC from the author today. I am so very happy Joan got her HEA. Out of all the characters I feel like she deserved it the most. This couple was so sweet and funny and George was the best. The bonus epilogue was perfect. This author never disappoints and this series was small town goals.
4.5. I'm very sad this is the end of the Kirby Falls series. I was hesitant that this was ending on an age gap trope which I loathe, but it was a baby gap in a grown-ass adult age category so it was a non-issue for me. I'm glad Joan found a hea and an additional found family! The only con was that the town and her players were much more a background character in this story (even though they rallied around Joan. It kinda just happened, and then...nothing?) Anyway, a solid end to the series and great writing!
We’ve reached the final book in Kirby Falls! This small town romance series has been such a joy to read.
Leaf Well Enough Alone is Joan and Ian’s story. We met Joan in the previous books since she’s Candace’s grumpy older sister. I was so excited when Laney announced Joan was getting her own book!
Joan is 36 and an introverted farmer. She doesn’t care what people think about her and she’s not big on romance. Enter Ian, the 29-year-old outgoing and fun-loving actor staying nearby to film a movie on Joan’s family farm.
Ian was enamored with Joan from the start. I loved how much he enjoyed spending time with Joan without trying to change who she was. And beneath Joan’s frosty exterior, she has a heart of gold. She’s reliable and will do anything to help anyone. And I loved the scenes where Ian brought Joan out of her shell, like on the dance floor.
One of my favorite things about Laney Hatcher’s writing is how well developed and deep her characters are. Joan and Ian were both so complex. Their feelings and problems felt so real. I loved the steps they each took in this book to grow as people and find the love they deserve.
In Leaf Well Enough Alone, you’ll find: 🍎 small town romance 🍎 he falls first 🍎 she’s grumpy/he’s sunshine 🍎 single guardian 🍎 age gap (she’s older) 🍎 girl gang and found family
I loved this book and this whole series so much. Each book follows a different couple and can be read as a standalone, but I recommend starting at the beginning, Take it or Leaf it, to get to know the characters and town (plus who are we kidding, I want you to read every book in this wonderful series!)
I’m so sad we’re saying goodbye to Kirby Falls but I can’t wait to see what Laney releases next.
I adore Laney’s stories…they are filled with amazing characters, beautiful settings and small town chaos.
Joan is amazing…she is a direct, not easily swayed, passionate about her farm and is annoyed by the nonsense going on in the town.
Ian is such a fun character, a good man and an amazing uncle to his nephew - George. Love how he pursues Joan and makes her feel seen and gives her confidence.
"All families look different. There's no right way to build one. Sometimes you do what you can with what you're given. And other times, you go out and build your own. It's as simple as that."
Joan and Ian have amazing banter, chemistry and a slow burn romance. They are so good for one another..in different ways.
“He wasn't some spoiled actor I tolerated occa-sionally. He was my teammate.”
Joan’s heart was softened a bit by George…he took Abilene to her and they became fast friends. Joan and George’s relationship helped Ian become a better uncle and build a strong relationship with him.
This was a cute story but such a slow slow burn. A quiet kind of love that sneaks up on you and something that is comforting. It is located in a small town so the comfort feel is to be expected. But when you mix a farmer with a movie star, things get mixed up. While Joan loves the quiet with her apple trees, Ian is younger and used to the famous lifestyle. The differences in their worlds is what makes them, well them. I will say that I mean it when I say this is a slow slow burn. At one point I was wondering if they were ever going to burn. All in all it was a good story.
I never review books, but Laney Hatcher wrote one of the best romances I’ve ever read. Here are 2 people who are the least likely people to get together, but Laney has written their story with humor and heart. Loved it.
I was absolutely hooked from the beginning. So glad Joan was going to be getting her HEA. I feel she’s often been misunderstood in the series. Thankful she found her person.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Hollywood has taken over the Judd's farm to film a movie. While it’s great business for all of Kirby Falls, Joan Judd can’t help but be annoyed by the disruption. In spite of trying to stay away from the set and any of the filming areas, the leading man, Ian Wells, keeps finding ways to get under her skin.
Leaf Well Enough Alone is the fifth and final book in the Kirby Falls series. While it could be read as a stand-alone, I would highly suggest reading the series in order. This contemporary, celebrity romance does contain open-door content.
Joan has been the reliable, no nonsense sister/daughter/friend through this whole series and I’m so glad we get her story. Is she a little mean sometimes? Yes but she’s also fiercely loyal to her loved ones and her home. I love her first meeting with Ian. She’s not the kind of girl who is going to drop everything for a pretty face and readers really see that with their initial interactions. While I enjoyed watching Joan’s growth and the romance that blossoms, her relationship with George is crucial to the story. “Apple Lady” is such a pivotal moment.
While I’m sad to see the Kirby Falls series come to an end, I look forward to reading whatever Laney Hatcher writes next.
Troupes- Grumpy Sunshine, Small town, Opposites attract, we come from different world, age gap, single guardian
Representation- Coded neurodivergence
I’m not crying my eyes are just sweating! I’m not sad at all that our time in Kirby Falls is over! But for real folks if you need your next small town busybody town romance series then look no farther.
I have been waiting for Joan to get her HEA since we met her. Her gruff and grumpy, straight forwardness was cat nip for our golden retriever hero and I just lapped up every single page of it! Ian is what romance heroes are made of and Joan honestly had no choice but to fall for him and his adorable nephew George! Ian on the other hand literally fell for her in the first seconds of meeting and just had to convince her that he was worthy.
I can not express my love for this series enough every book brought new troupes and more depth to the town of Kirby Falls and the community laney has built within and it is just a pleasure to go there and sad to leave.
Here’s hoping we will get to go back in the future! But for now I can not wait for what Laney has for us next!
Thank you Laney Hatcher for this early copy! My opinions are my own and are not informed by knowing this lovely human.
I’m going to give this three stars because 2 feels low. I guess Joan got her redemption but did she? I really hated her in Candace’s book. And we were never given any explanation about why she was the way she was. This book definitely softens her but it almost felt like the author was writing a character who is autistic but didn’t want to label them autistic. She’s a “robot” with her feelings, she likes order and routine, she’s very honest and truthful no matter what, she is slow to accept change. But again, none of what we know about Joan allows for her behavior towards her siblings.
Then we get to her book and she’s kind of bland. And so is Ian. The book is mostly about their friendship to lovers relationship. It’s watching their relationship unfold and Joan continue to be a hypocritical bitch sometimes. I found it hard to find redeeming qualities for Joan.
It’s nice to wrap up the series. And I appreciated that Ian’s secret wasn’t leaked to the public and he didn’t blame Joan for anything stupid.
"Leaf Well Enough Alone" by Laney Hatcher is part of the "Kirby Falls" series but it can be read as a standalone.
I received a digital copy from the author. Opinions from this review are completely my own.
What you can expect:
- small town romance - farmer / actor - age gap (she is older) - he fall first - slow burn with spice
This is the last book in the series and I have to say that I will miss these characters. We finally have Joan's story. She is the head farmer at her family’s orchard and an independent woman that is not thinking about a relationship. Until she meets Ian, the star of a movie that is filmed in town. He is also taking care of his nephew, George, that starts spending time with Joan at the orchard.
I liked all the books in this series and I think that Laney writes beautiful love stories. The relationship between Joan and Ian develops slowly and it felt realistic, considering her reluctance in dating a celebrity that will leave in a few months. The interactions between them are full of banter, tension and attraction, but they are trying hard to not start a relationship.
This story a good combination of romance, friendship, humour and small town vibes.
4.5 stars! I loved this so much! Such a good way to end the series! I’ve gotta admit, whenever I know that the FMC is going to be a more closed off character, I get really stubborn and don’t want to read the story (similarities much?), but this turned out so much better than I would have been able to picture on my own. I loved getting to know Joan more and see her character growth and openness develop, and then the relationships with George and Ian were both so sweet. It was so heartwarming to see how consistent and patient Ian was, especially with the love interest being someone who is a little more hesitant, it was a really good portrayal of a different dynamic than I typically see in romance novels. I’m so happy that I got a chance to read an early copy of this thanks to the author, and all of my opinions are my own. Definitely add this to your TBR!
Joan is an apple farmer and likes consistency. When a new movie films in her small town, there are too many tourists. She meets Ian, and they begin running together. When she finds out that he’s the star of the film, she doesn’t think they should hang out.
Ian is a celebrity raising his nephew after his sister dies. When he meets Joan, he’s smitten. Joan and George form a bond while Ian is busy working. Ian works hard to prove to Joan that he’s interested and thinks they could work.
When his Hollywood life comes calling, can these two find a way to stay together?
As per usual, this series has a quirky small town with lots of heart! I loved how much Ian worked to get Joan to love him!
Leaf Will Enough one is another fantastic story from Laney Hatcher!
I loved getting to go back to Kirby Falls for Joan and Ian's story. They come from two very different words, but the movie being filmed on the farm forces them together. Their banter was fantastic, and it was great having the dual POV. Joan was a bit guarded and grumpy but fell hard for Ian. He was charming but needed someone to want him for who he was not because he's famous and he found that in Joan. I loved Ian's nephew George too. He was adorable and so sweet.
The relationship development was so natural and I loved how they both found exactly what they needed in one another. This is small town romance perfection!
Thank you to the author for providing an ARC for an honest review.
I absolutely cannot get enough of Kirby Falls. The relationship for Joan is one that I was so excited for. The fact that she is the eldest daughter, taking care of everything and everyone just resonates so much with I know so many people. Her parts in the other books of the series made me wonder so much about her. I loved how she really started opening up more in Candace and Mercer’s story, but the way she really came into herself and opened herself up for that chance with Ian was just beautiful. Her attitude of being “Plain Old Joan” is so relatable. I loved how the story of Joan and Ian came together and I just think Laney has an amazing way of making Kirby Falls and its people feel so real. Loved everything about this!
I loved this book and was so impatient to her John's story once we met her a few books ago. I knew whoever would win her kind, but cautious heart would have to be extra special and Ian did not disappoint. While this is a slow-burn, it is delightfully so where you are anticipating things as much as the characters. I could keep gushing about what I love, but will stop myself. My only complaint is that the series is over. I've so loved Kirby falls and the people that make it a home and I only wish it was a real place to visit. Looking forward to what Lahey Hatcher is creating for the future.
Oh my word did I ever love this book; I was completely charmed by both Joan and Ian (and sweet little George too). Watching their romance blossom was very satisfying - they had some slow burn vibes and I was living for every moment that brought them closer together. Honestly I keep thinking I can't love this series anymore than I already do but each new book proves me wrong. Everything about it feels like a warm hug while I'm reading and I can't help but feel so giddy.
Leaf Well Enough Alone is the last installment of the Kirby Falls series. A series of interconnected small town romances. And they’re all so swoon worthy!
Joan Judd is a grumpy apple farmer. Who, while lonely at times, doesn’t need anything messing up the status quo. She’s happy with where she is in life and who she is.
Enter Ian and George. Ian Wells is the infamous Dorian Masters. A Hollywood Heartthrob with a new project that is filming on Joan’s families apple orchard. George, or Georgie, is Ian’s young nephew who has come to live with him after a family tragedy.
Ian and George worm into Joan’s careful life in a way that she wasn’t prepared for, nor that she necessarily wanted.
But can she be vulnerable and allow herself to fall in love with them both? Or will the stress of Ian’s Hollywood persona finish the relationship before it begins?
As an eldest daughter, farm girl with premature grey hair, I’ve always felt a kinship with Joan. And I’ve absolutely loved diving deeper into her story and love that she finally let her walls down and get her HEA.
Ian and George found a family that loved and accepted them and whew! I absolutely love those apple farm families!
They were all so good for each other and I loved getting the little slice of life epilogue at the end.
What a great way to close out Kirby Falls. Though I know I’ll absolutely be revisiting them in the future.
I never thought that Joanie would get her own HEA. But here it is. Joanie has come a long way in this series. I always thought she was cold and only cared about the farm. However in leaf well enough alone, you see her grow. And it takes Ian and little George to allow her to do that.
I’m so sad that we never get to go back to Kirby Falls, but am excited for the next adventure Laney will take us on.
-Hollywood H/Farmer h -Reverse age gap -He falls first
This is a small-town slow-burn romance following Ian and Joan. He's a Hollywood star raising his nephew, and she's an orchard farmer who resists change.
Their relationship starts slowly, beginning as friendship and developing into something more. It was a nice read.
I was given a free copy of this book and I'm voluntarily leaving an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I knew this day was coming, still didn't make it any easier. Had to say goodbye to Kirby Falls. I am so glad Joan got her HEA and that Ian and George found family. Ralph is pretty cute too! I'm gonna miss this crazy bunch.
The story of Joan and Ian. I loved how she is no nonsense and tells it like it is. George was a great character too. I loved the setting and how it was told from both points of view.
