Ellis Renwick and I are barely more than acquaintances—connected only by mutual friends and the endorsement deal I signed with her company. Her baby isn’t mine, and minding my own business should be easy.
But when the baby’s father walks away, I step up. Raised by a single mom, I know the weight Ellis is about to carry, and there is no way I’m letting her do it alone. But somewhere between midnight cravings, stolen kisses, and tiny heartbeats, the woman behind my endorsement deal becomes my whole world. Now I’m falling hopelessly in love with a future that was never meant to be mine.
When her father discovers I’m not the biological dad, he wants to expose the ex publicly, threatening to shatter the quiet haven Ellis and I have built. He wants justice from a ghost. But they've become mine to protect.
What her dad doesn’t understand is that her ex walked away …

Brody Vaughn should have been focused on his career and on his new endorsement deal, but when Ellis Renwick was in a bad situation, he instantly jumped in to help her. They didn't know each other that well, only having to interact because of a couple of mutual friends and because Ellis was working at the company that had signed an endorsement deal with Brody. But when Brody heard about Ellis being alone in her pregnancy journey, he stepped in, knowing how much his own mom struggled with being alone. But things will definitely not be that easy when they were spending so much time together and when the others around him were about to find out the secret they tried to keep hidden, that her baby isn't Brody's. Will they be able to still keep everything under wrap, if everything will blow up?
Ahhh, Brody Vaughn the man you are!! Kind, caring and attentive. He had truly won my heart with his way of being and with his soft heart. Suuuper sweet! Regarding to the story, I kind of expected a little bit more from the second part and from the end of this book, but I truly enjoyed seeing these two becoming so comfortable in each other's presence and relying so much on that secure feeling when they were together. I loved all those cute moments they had together and the ones with their dogs, having that easiness in their connection even from the beginning. It was so emotional to follow all those scenes where her pregnancy was being monitored, knowing that Ellis could have been all alone during all those moments. I adoored how they acted in each other's presence, Brody being a total gentleman and a super protective and caring man, being the perfect person Ellis needed in those tough times, during her pregnancy. Definitely suuuper swoony!!!💕
This book was such an emotional, yet super cute and fun read, being mesmerized by that instant and beautiful friendship that first created between Ellis and Brody. I loved following that pregnancy journey and everything that came with it, but also what was happening in their hearts. Just amazing!🥰
I must thank Ava and her amazing team for sending me this e-ARC. I had the bestest time with Ellis and Brody.💕

Listen, this story hit all the marks and then some. Brody and Elis's relationship is oh so swoon worthy, it hurts.
Brody is a caretaker to his core and this stems from his childhood. He saw what his mother went through and he knew he would not let that happen to the woman in his life, whenever she arrives in his life.
Ellis is a smart, powerful executive and she has earned her stripes instead of just working off of her parents' name and fortune.. She's dedicated and the last thing she expected from an on-again-off-again friends with benefits situation with her now ex is that she'd end up pregnant and he'd literally do anything and everything to avoid her and a baby.
When Brody hears she's going to the doctor alone... that isn't acceptable. He steps up, steps in and he is determined to make sure that she will be taken care of. He will do anything to make her feel comfortable in this unexpected life change. He was raised by a single mom who busted her butt to make sure he and his sister were well taken care of; he knows from experience the affect single motherhood has on a woman and the children.
Their relationship starts as friends. And it's sweet. Slowly but surely, he starts to learn her cravings and her desires; he enjoys the little moments and milestones of the baby. He's not going to let her do this alone, no matter their relationship, he plans to be there for her. Even if they're just friends.
Their relationship really blossoms from there, and he falls for her and the future with her; and he falls hard. And this big, tough guy is fillltttthhhhyyyyyy. And he's a dog dad; helloooo! Book boyfriend 101 is now being taught by Brody Vaughn.
This was my first read from Ava Sutton and let me tell you, I will be going back to read the rest of this series and more!
A special thanks to Ava and Wordsmith Publicity for this ARC opportunity. I appreciate it very much!

O MY GOODNESS! I LOVED this book! Brand-new author to me, and I literally spent the several days devouring both of her series. They were ALL so good, but this one?! MY FAVORITE! And Brody Vaughn… THIS MAN. 🥹 He is everything good, kind, selfless, caring, loving, and SO protective AND HOTTTTTTT. I honestly don’t think there are enough words for how much I loved him! If you love a good football romance with a man who is by her side from day one, even when the baby isn’t his, YOU NEED THIS BOOK!!! The way he shows up for her is EVERYTHING. ❤️
Brody Vaughn… THE MAN YOU ARE! ❤️ I fell head over heels for this man. He is kind, caring, protective, attentive, and a caretaker to his core. When Ellis found herself going through pregnancy alone, Brody stepped in and he NEVER stepped back. And Ellis! She is smart, strong, successful, and has worked hard for everything she has. I loved seeing her truly find someone who broke the walls down and let her be taken care of! I loved that he was always there when she needed him, but also knew Ellis respected her strength. He didn't try to save her, he simply made sure she knew she wasn't alone. PURE ABSOLUTE SWOON!!!!
Their relationship slowly turning into something so much more was EVERYTHING. I loved watching them become comfortable with each other, rely on one another, and fall so deeply in love. All those little moments, the pregnancy, the protectiveness, the sweetness… again PURE ABSOLUTE SWOON!!! And their chemistry, their connection. This man’s mouth, the spice, holy so freaking hot as fire!!!!🔥
I LOVED seeing everyone from the past books. Loved their group of friends. Just all of it!
This book was so emotional, SO many swoon-worthy moments. These two are truly the definition of SOUL MATES! You need to add this whole series now! AMAZING!

✨ARC Read✨ The Decoy (Book 4 in the Gridiron Legacy) By Ava Sutton
“While I know you don’t need those things; you’re going through something pretty fucking big. And Dylan f***ing Boone is a complete assh*le for leaving you to handle this alone. So, princess, I’m sitting in that waiting room. End of discussion.”
“You really are something special, Brody,” she says softly.
“See, but that’s the thing, yes, he might not be my biological child, but he’s mine in every other sense of the word. And because my mom and sister know me, they will know I’m not doing this for any other reason except that I love you. Besides, how he came to be isn’t important to me.”
Guys, I am swooning so hard for Brody and Elis!! Brody is top tier book boyfriend material and how you write a perfect green flag man with a backbone! Elis never made herself a victim, she just accepted her fate and that her baby daddy was a dirt bag. She is the perfect bad*ss female we love, but also didn’t fight with accepting help, and I loved that! These two are so freaking sweet and perfect! I just loved this story so much! What a way to end such a great series!!
Thank you so much Ava and Team Ava Sutton for the chance to arc read!

Brody & Ellis are perfect. Ellis is a total boss babe and the way she handled the "sperm donor" was absolute Queen behavior! And even though she didn't need him, Brody stepped in and stepped up, and because he is the greenest green flag, she could not resist.
If you read this book, and I hope you will, be prepared to swoon the entire time because Brody Vaughn is just too much! In the best way. Every action and every word was sincere and passionate and all in service to the woman that would become the love of his life. He never controlled her. He never stifled her. He cared for her. He protected her. He supported her. He loved her and the baby with every ounce of his being. And Dolly Parton help me, the way he worshipped his woman in the bedroom....And our girl knew what she wanted and what she deserved and she's didn't hesitate to ask....IYKYK
Now I can't forget to mention the two bestest pups! Buck and Oshie were so freaking cute! The way they instantly bonded and stayed by Ellis' side melted my heart.
Oh and Ellis' mom had me cracking up! Her one liners are just epic!
This book is the perfect end to an amazing series. The found family in this series is so wonderful and fun. I loved seeing them all come together to support Brody and Ellis.
I'm so sad this series is over, but I know it's one I'll come back to when I'm missing this wonderful group of people!
Ava seriously writes the swooniest men that are just out here waving all the green flags. I did not think I could ever love one of Ava’s MMCs like I do Casey and then Brody Vaughn walks in and is like nope… I got you Ellis. Seriously, I was a puddle. I loved everything about him from being a protective hero with a dirty mouth and is a dog lover.
Ellis has an accidental pregnancy with her terrible situationship and after being raised by a single mom, Brody does not want Ellis to go through this alone. From the very first appointment he took her too, I knew he was gonna be all in on her and her baby. Ellis is such a powerhouse FMC and needs the softness that Brody allowed her to have.
Their relationship was just so beautiful and grew so naturally. With all the sweet moments and shared milestones of her pregnancy, they couldn’t help but grow into something more. Not to mention the chemistry was just greatness and the spicy times even better.
I’m so going to miss this group of friends and the found family vibes they have l, but also can’t wait for Ava to step into next era of sports.
Thank you Ava and team for the copy of The Deocy and bringing Brody to my world.
When Ellis realizes that she is pregnant even though it is unexpected it isn’t something she regrets. When her baby’s father wants nothing to do with her or their baby she is prepared to do it alone however Brody isn’t about to let that happen.
Brody is a football player who only knows Ellis in a professional capacity however when he finds out that she is pregnant he wants to be there for her in any way he can. He is willing to be the friend that Ellis needs however he soon realizes that she and her baby are feeling like the family he can’t live without.
Brody is everything as he is protective and always there to support her while Ellis doesn’t need him but appreciates everything he does for her. The romance between them is based on a deep friendship and shows that love is built on being there for each other and every challenge you share only makes it stronger.
I am loving this series, and Brody and Ellis have the best story to date!
Brody is the epitome of book boyfriend, swoon worthy, caretaker, and how he steps in for Ellis is what we all want. Ellis is a smart powerful executive; she runs a tight ship in the business world. When Brody shows her what it is to be taken care of by her man, she finally gets it, she has a partner. How they go from best friends to more is an example of true love.
Thank you to the Author for the advanced copy; this is my voluntary review
I AM NOT OKAY THAT THE GRIDIRON LEGACY SERIES IS OVER. But if Ava Sutton was going to make us say goodbye, she sure as hell knew how to do it. The Decoy is everything I’ve come to love about this series wrapped up in one incredibly swoony, sexy, heartfelt romance. Unexpected pregnancy, a protective football hero, found family, friendship turning into something so much more, and a man who basically looked at Ellis and said, “You are NOT doing this alone.” Excuse me while I go swoon into a puddle.
Ellis is pregnant, completely unexpectedly, and the baby’s father has made it abundantly clear that he wants absolutely nothing to do with either of them. Ellis is more than capable of handling things herself. She’s smart, successful, driven, and has built her own career rather than simply coasting on her family name. She isn't looking for someone to rescue her. But along comes Brody, determined to be there for her. These two barely know each other when he discovers Ellis is going to her first appointment alone. And for Brody, that’s all it takes. He doesn’t overthink it. He doesn’t wait to be asked. He simply decides that she shouldn’t have to sit there alone when he can be there.
Ava has a gift for creating characters I immediately become attached to, and Brody Vaughn? Yeah. He owned me. I knew I was going to like him, but I was NOT prepared for how hard I was going to fall. This man is caretaker energy personified. Protective without being controlling. Supportive without taking away Ellis’s independence. Thoughtful in all the little ways that somehow hit harder than the grand gestures. And then, because apparently being a giant walking green flag wasn’t enough, he’s also a professional football player, a dog dad, and FILTHY. Sir. Please.
Brody’s kindness isn’t some grand performance. It’s in the everyday things. The appointments. Remembering what she needs. Paying attention to her cravings. Showing up for the milestones. Making sure she knows someone is in her corner. He gives her room to make her own choices while quietly making sure she never has to carry every single thing by herself. His history makes that even more meaningful. Brody was raised by a single mother, and he saw firsthand what it took for her to raise him and his sister. He understands the weight of doing everything alone. So when he sees Ellis facing that same possibility, something in him just says NOPE. Not on my watch.
And I absolutely loved that Ellis never becomes a damsel because of it. She doesn’t suddenly forget how capable she is. She simply learns that accepting love and support doesn't diminish her strength. Brody gives her permission to be soft without ever making her feel weak. Their dynamic is just SO GOOD. What starts as friendship develops so naturally. There’s no instant switch where suddenly they’re madly in love. It’s built through time together. Conversations. Shared experiences. Pregnancy milestones. Little moments that slowly change the way they see each other. Brody becomes part of Ellis’s life so seamlessly that eventually it becomes impossible to imagine him anywhere else. And then those feelings start becoming something more.
The chemistry between these two is great. The tenderness is swoony, the emotional connection is everything, and once the heat kicks in? BRODY VAUGHN HAS A DIRTY MOUTH, Y'ALL. This man is caretaker by day, absolute naughty menace by night. I also adored watching Brody fall for Ellis and her baby without ever treating either of them like an obligation. He starts out simply wanting to help. Then he wants to be there. Then somewhere along the way, this woman and her little family become the future he didn't even realize he was looking for. And Ellis deserves every bit of that love. She’s a powerhouse, but she never feels too hard or untouchable. She’s allowed to be vulnerable. She’s allowed to need someone. She’s allowed to accept help. I loved watching her realize that having a partner beside you doesn't mean you aren't capable of standing on your own. It means you finally have someone willing to stand beside you anyway.
And can we PLEASE talk about the puppies?! The dogs were such a fun addition to this story. And THAT ENDING SCENE. My heart. The family dynamics throughout this book were also everything. Ellis’s family, Brody’s family, the friend group, the growing little unit they create together. That found family feeling is one of the things I’ve loved most about the Gridiron Legacy books, so getting to spend time with this crew one last time made the ending especially bittersweet. I am absolutely not ready to say goodbye to these characters, but Ellis and Brody were such a beautiful couple to close the series with.
The Decoy is sexy, sweet, emotional, funny, and completely swoony. It’s about unexpected circumstances, but more importantly, it’s about choosing to show up. Choosing to care. Choosing to build something together when life doesn't look anything like you planned. Ava, I’ll be over here waiting for whatever sports romance era comes next.

4.25⭐️ 2🌶️ ARC Review ✨ 📖 THE DECOY 📖 by Ava Sutton ✨ This is book 4 in the Gridiron Legacy series. Brody Vaughn is a veteran NFL tight end. Ellis Renwick is the global brand manager for Overtime Sports, her family’s company (think Gatorade). She had a casual relationship with an egotistical hockey player, and when she told him she was pregnant he told her she was on her own. Brody’s dad left his mom to raise 2 kids alone, so Brody doesn’t want Ellis’ kid to be abandoned like he was. He goes with her to all of her doctor appointments. I love it when he calls her ‘Princess’. Their relationship starts as a friendship. He’s there and he doesn’t have to be but he’s down bad, all-in, making her and the baby a priority and I was here for it. He’s so attentive and anticipatory of her needs—he brings her food, he becomes someone she relies on.
When he says ‘I’ll take care of you, Princess’ he definitely does. And I mean ALL of her needs. 🤭 He’s so protective of her and the baby. When he says in her ear that he needs a shower and she should join him? So fucking sexy. We also get gray sweatpants, and he might tell her to hold onto the headboard. 😮💨 He likes to take care of her - it’s like his calling/purpose. She can relax with him, and let go of the control she usually thrives on. He makes her breakfast, and he drives her everywhere. He is such a good man! When he calls her ‘baby’. The swoon. 🫠 When he kisses her belly and says ‘be good for mommy? Gah, I die. 🥹 The ending was perfection! I can’t wait for Aiden Griffith’s hockey 🏒 romance book next.
❤️ Aftercare ❤️ He takes off her coat, her shoes, and carries her upstairs 🫠🤌🏻 ❤️ Eyes 👀 on me ❤️ He cleans his fingers
Favorite quotes: "Your phone, princess. Hand it to me." "Brody, seriously, why?" "There. Now you have my direct number. I don't care if it's three am and you have a craving for ice cream, if you feel sick, or if you just need someone to talk to, I want you to call me. Promise me, Ellis." “Okay, Brody. I promise.”
"I'm really trying to be good, you know. I've always been attracted to you, but every time I see you, it's getting harder not to touch you." "I wouldn't know it. You've been a gentleman." "Well, I try. But sitting this close to you...having you here in my space...it's like torture."
This man is becoming more to me than just a friend and someone I can rely on. He's becoming someone I can't see my life without. I may thrive on control, but when it comes to Brody Vaughn, I'm completely unraveled.
“I'll always follow your lead when it comes to this." He rests his palm over my belly. "Why are you the sweetest?" I lean up on my toes and kiss his lips. "Because my mother taught me how to treat a woman properly."
"I need a shower. A long one. And I think you should join me." “Okay."
"My purpose is different. Not like my usual off-season routine. But sitting at home, making breakfast for you, driving you into work...it just feels right. It feels like I'm building something that actually matters." "You're such a good man, Brody.”
"Ellis. You never have to thank me for taking care of you. You're with me now. That baby boy in your belly is my son, as far as I'm concerned.”
My entire world is right here, wrapped in the arms of a man who has claimed me, and my son.
"Look at this pretty pink pussy. You're so wet for me, Princess. So ready for me. You want my cock, don't you?" "Yes, Brody. Please.” "Not yet. I want you to come first. I need it. Keep your hands on the headboard and hold on."
"Ellis. The way you handle everything—your work, this life, growing our son inside you—managing it all at the same time like it's easy...you're absolute perfection. You amaze me every day."
"You know, independence used to be such a big part of who I am. I never looked for a safety net. But you've turned out to be the most unexpected surprise of my life, Brody. I don't have to carry it all by myself anymore because I know you've got me."
What to expect: *Pro football romance *Tight End x Corporate badass *Cinnamon roll MMC/protective hero *Accidental pregnancy/Not his baby *Friends to lovers *They fall together *He’s obsessed *Found family

🏈 She Could Do It Alone, But Brody Made Sure She Never Had To 🥹 ⭐ 5 Stars 🌶️ 3 Chili Peppers
Brody Vaughn, the man you are. 🥹💕 I am such a sucker for a caretaker MMC, but there was something about the way Brody stepped into Ellis's life that completely got me. Ellis was more than capable of handling an unexpected pregnancy on her own. She is smart, successful, independent, and absolutely not looking for someone to rescue her. But the second Brody realized she was going through this without the baby's father beside her, he decided she shouldn't have to do every part of it alone.
Because Brody was raised by a single mom, his reasons for showing up felt especially meaningful. He knew how much his mom had carried while raising him and his sister, and when he discovered Ellis was going to her appointment alone, he simply stepped up. What started as support between two people who barely knew each other slowly became this incredibly sweet friendship. Then somewhere between doctor appointments, pregnancy cravings, little milestones, their adorable dogs, and all those quiet moments together, friendship started looking a whole lot like love. 🥹
What I loved most was that Brody never tried to take over Ellis's life. He didn't treat her like she was incapable because she was pregnant, and he never made his help come with conditions. He paid attention. He showed up. He protected her while still respecting her independence. He gave this woman who was so accustomed to handling everything herself a safe place where she could finally let someone take care of her too. THAT is my weakness. 💕
And Ellis was such a great FMC. I loved that accepting Brody's support never diminished how strong she was. She could absolutely do this herself, but she slowly realized she didn't have to. Watching her become comfortable enough to be vulnerable with him made their relationship feel even more special.
Then there is Brody's relationship with her baby. 😭 He never treated that baby as someone else's responsibility. Watching him become invested in every milestone and slowly fall in love with this little family he never expected absolutely melted me. Biology didn't determine who his family was. His actions did.
Of course, we also need to discuss the fact that this sweet, thoughtful, dog-loving, professional football player with a giant heart apparently decided being a walking green flag wasn't enough. He needed a filthy mouth too. 😂🌶️ Brody Vaughn was giving Book Boyfriend 101, and I happily attended every class.
I also adored Buck and Oshie! 🐾 The dogs added so many sweet moments, especially the way they bonded with Ellis. Add in the families and the wonderful found-family dynamic surrounding Brody and Ellis, and there was so much warmth packed into this story.
This was my first Ava Sutton book, and what an introduction! I loved how naturally Brody and Ellis went from acquaintances to friends to something neither of them expected. Their relationship wasn't about Ellis needing someone to complete her life. It was about finding someone who wanted to stand beside her through it.
The Decoy gave me an independent powerhouse FMC, an incredibly protective cinnamon-roll football player, pregnancy milestones, friendship turning into love, adorable dogs, found family, plenty of heat, and a man who fell just as hard for the unexpected future as he did for the woman carrying it. Brody didn't have to stay. He chose to, again and again. And that made all the difference. 🥹❤️
Thank you to Ava Sutton and Wordsmith Publicity for the gifted advanced reader copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I knew I was going to like this man, but I was not prepared for how hard I would fall for him.
When Brody realizes Ellis is pregnant and the baby’s father has decided he wants nothing to do with either of them, he has absolutely no obligation to step in. They’re barely more than acquaintances, connected through mutual friends and an endorsement deal. But Brody was raised by a single mom. He watched her work and sacrifice to raise him and his sister, and something in him simply cannot let Ellis walk through pregnancy alone when he has the ability to be there for her.
And that tells you pretty much everything you need to know about Brody Vaughn.
What I loved most was that his support never came at the expense of Ellis’s independence. Ellis is smart, successful, capable, and completely able to take care of herself and her baby. Brody knows that. He respects the hell out of her for it. He doesn’t swoop in and try to take over her life or make decisions for her. He just quietly makes sure she knows she doesn’t have to carry everything by herself.
It’s the doctor appointments. The cravings. The conversations. The little moments and milestones. The way he pays attention. The way he protects her while still respecting her choices. The way he keeps showing up without expecting anything in return.
THAT is what got me.
And I loved Ellis just as much. She’s independent and strong, but Ava Sutton allows her to have softness too. Watching her slowly trust Brody enough to accept his help—and eventually realize that wanting someone beside you doesn’t make you any less capable on your own—was such an important part of their story.
Their relationship develops so naturally because there’s a genuine friendship underneath everything else. They talk. They respect each other. They feel safe with each other. And somewhere among all those pregnancy milestones and long conversations, friendship starts becoming attraction, affection starts becoming love, and Brody begins falling for a future he never expected to be his.
And when that attraction finally boils over? HELLO.
Because apparently being a gentle, attentive, protective giant wasn’t enough. Brody also had to be filthy, ridiculously hot, a professional football player, AND a dog dad. The man was collecting book-boyfriend qualifications like trophies.
But underneath all of that is a man who loves deeply. Brody never sees Ellis or her baby as an obligation. There’s no distinction in his heart between what is biologically his and what isn’t. Once he loves them, they’re his family. Period.
The found family throughout this series has always been one of my favorite parts, so getting to spend time with everyone again made this finale especially bittersweet. I wasn’t ready to say goodbye to the Gridiron Legacy crew, but Ellis and Brody were such a beautiful way to close out the series.
The Decoy is emotional, sexy, tender, funny, and full of the kind of quiet acts of love that get me every single time.
There are book boyfriends who say the right things, and then there are men like Brody Vaughn who simply show up, roll up their sleeves, and quietly make sure you never have to face a hard day alone.
The Decoy by Ava Sutton closes out the Gridiron Legacy series, and it is easily one of the most tender, deeply satisfying sports romances I have read in a long time.
Ellis Renwick is a powerhouse corporate executive who has earned every shred of her success. When an unexpected pregnancy collides with a selfish ex who immediately runs for the exit... she does not wallow. She puts her head down, draws on her independence, and prepares to raise her child solo.
Raised by a selfless single mother, Brody Vaughn understands the heavy weight of solo parenting all too well. He might only know Ellis through a company endorsement deal… but the moment he discovers she is walking into that clinic all alone… he steps up without hesitation or fanfare. What begins as a simple offer of support quickly evolves into an ironclad friendship forged through midnight craving runs, shared doctor visits, and quiet domestic comfort... Watching Ellis, a woman so accustomed to carrying the world on her shoulders, gradually let her guard down and allow herself to be cared for was pure perfection.
Ava Sutton completely masterclasses the "not his baby" trope here. Brody never treats Ellis or her pregnancy like an obligation or a project. To him, loving Ellis means loving the future and the family growing right in front of him. The transition from supportive friends to undeniable passion feels completely organic, and once these two finally stop denying their connection... the heat is explosive. Brody is the ultimate walking green flag with an unmatched protective streak and a surprisingly filthy mouth that kept the pages turning. Add in the warmth of their adorable dogs, hilarious family banter, and zero unnecessary third-act breakups, and you have an unforgettable series finale that leaves your heart completely full.

✨ARC REVIEW✨ 5⭐️ I’m so sad this series is over but what a way to go out!! Ellis didn’t have a baby in her plans especially not having one by herself. Brody grew up with the most incredible single mom and knew that no matter what he would be there for his future family regardless of what life threw at him. When he overhears Ellis talking about going to her first OBGYN appointment alone he doesn’t even have to think about it when he decides to step in and be there to support Ellis. The minute they both hear the heartbeat for the first time their lives flip upside down. Ellis is more determined than ever to give this baby the life he deserves regardless of who his father is. Brody knows in that instant her going to be there for the two of them no matter what. It’s only a matter of time until they give in to the connection they have. Brody knows these two are his future. He wants to give Ellis and their baby the world and he’s determined to do it one day at a time.
I absolutely could not put this one down!! I adored Brody and Ellis so so much! This book was so stinkin good and had so much to love. Ellis is such a strong character but I love the way she give in to Brody’s support simple because he wants to be there for her. Them falling for each other is just inevitable and Brody seamlessly engrains himself in her life in the best way possible! He is the ultimate book boyfriend and I could not get enough of him!! I am simply obsessed with all the characters in this one but THE PUPS ugh I don’t wanna give any spoilers but the scene with them in the end just made my heart so happy. The family dynamics were so good too! Both Ellis and Brody’s families were so excited for the baby and it just warmed my heart! I don’t think I’ve met an Ava book that I haven’t absolutely LOVED and I cannot wait for whats to come!!

I honestly cannot believe the Gridiron Legacy series has come to an end. I feel like “the end of an epic series” deserves a huge announcement, fireworks and all the pomp and ceremony you can possibly give it, because this series deserves every bit of it.
Yet again, this author has delivered an outstanding romance, and Brody is everything a book boyfriend should be — hot, caring, sweet and absolutely dynamite in the bedroom.
The Synopsis
The synopsis leads you to believe this is about a footballer helping a sort-of friend when she discovers she’s pregnant and the baby’s father wants nothing to do with them.
But that really doesn’t do justice to the story waiting inside these pages.
💜 Why You’ll Want to Read It
Read it for Brody. Because honestly, enough said! 😂 He is caring, protective, sweet and seriously swoony, with just the right amount of heat.
Read it for the chemistry. Ellis and Brody have that connection that jumps straight off the page, giving us plenty of heat alongside the emotional moments.
Read it for the little things. It’s the quiet gestures, the way Brody cares and the way he shows up that had me swooning just as much as the big romantic moments.
Read it for the feels. Family, friendship, vulnerability and a romance that slowly works its way under your skin and refuses to let go.
Read it for the finale. If you’ve loved the Gridiron Legacy series, you absolutely need to experience Ellis and Brody’s story and say goodbye to a series that has delivered so many wonderful romances.
Beyond the Synopsis…
Because this is so much more than an unexpected pregnancy and a footballer stepping in to help.
Watching Ellis and Brody grow closer is where this romance really shines. Brody grew up with a single mum and sister, so he understands what his mum went through, and that gives us another glimpse into the man he has become.
It was the little things Brody does that had me constantly swooning — the way he cares, the way he shows up and those quiet moments that say so much.
And the chemistry? OFF THE CHARTS.
Add in the family, friendships and all the feels, and you have a romance that grabs your heart and refuses to let go.
💜 My WOB65 Verdict
The Decoy is an emotional, sexy, heartfelt and completely swoon-worthy finale to an epic series.
I’m genuinely sad to say goodbye to Gridiron Legacy, but what a way to finish.
When Brody Vaughn discovers that Ellis Renwick is about to become a single mom he knows she has a long road ahead of her, as he watched his own mother do the same thing. It's also that realization that has him stepping up and offering to help her in any way he can. He knows it's not his obligation, but he can't help but want to be involved. He wants to ensure they have everything they need...even if it means he ends up with nothing in return.
Between the pages of this heartwarming page-turner you will meet a couple that were brought together by chance, but after spending time with one another they soon learn that what they've been feeling is far more than appreciation for a friend. When Brody heard that Ellis was expecting and the father of her child had just walked away something inside him whispered stay. To become the guy she could depend on, the one to support her, and the one to teach her that not all guys are jerks. They start off as purely just friends, but somewhere along the way things take a heartfelt turn and they both start to see one another in a different light. But just as they settle into this unexpected side of their lives someone decides to interfere... and threatens to ruin everything.
I loved every single second of this story, there aren't a lot of men out there like Brody, to step in and do what he did... but he did it so well. Watching these two find love and create their little family was something truly beautiful to behold... my heart felt every ounce of it. If you like heartfelt sports romances than you have to take a chance on this one, Brody will steal your heart and attention the moment he wanders onto the page! Highly recommend!!
I requested an advanced copy of this title from the publisher and I am voluntarily leaving my honest and unbiased opinion.
Okay! Yes! This entire book was an absolute joy of read! This is a friends to lovers, not his baby (which isn’t usually my favourite), sports romance-and I have to say this author nailed these tropes-she converted me. I enjoyed the writing and story development a lot-I was hooked from the start-considering my emotions from the prologue LOL; IYKYK!
Brody Vaughn is a top tier cinnamon roll book boyfriend-but don’t let that soft side fool you-he is fierce, has a huge heart and protective is the most delicious way! All the little things he did, the small gestures, the care was everything.
Ellis is the type of FMC I love, smart, driven, powerful, and strong. She speaks her mind and holds her ground in the best ways and I loved watching her shine. It was amazing to see the beautifully independent woman be vulnerable with Brody and allow him behind her carefully constructed walls.
These two start out out as friends, but along the way they both fell hard and fast and in the sweetest ways. Their dynamic was amazing, their conversations had me melting and the way the made the perfect team with everything had my heart so full! These two were meant to to be and I enjoyed each and every moment I got to spend with them. The support they have from their family’s too was so nice.
Although I’m sad this series is done, Ava Sutton finished it in the best way! I enjoyed getting to see previous characters and how these friends are more like family!
I very much look forward to what is next!

**thank you to the author for the copy of this book. This review and its opinions are my own.
Brody is my new favourite book boyfriend! Besides the muscles and good looks, the man is the steadfast, supportive partner every woman wants by her side. He steps up to help Ellis when her smarmy and callous ex bails after learning she is pregnant. Brody lets her know that he will be there whenever and wherever she needs him to be. He isn’t expecting anything in return, he just doesn’t think that she should be alone on this pregnancy journey. His own single mother worked multiple jobs tirelessly to support herself, Brody and his sister after his father left. He respects and admires Ellis, and has no doubts that she will make a great mom. Even the strongest person can use support sometimes, and with pregnancy hormones and tumultuous emotions, Ellis is happy to accept Brody’s support and comfort. She feels comfortable and safe with him. Their relationship slowly evolves from a friendship into something more. The doctor visits, the shared pregnancy milestones and long conversations bring them closer together and let them truly see each other. That’s when the sparks between them really start to burn bright and combust. Brody is very happy to claim mother and child as his own.
I love that Brody is a gentle, attentive and protective giant with Ellis. He treats her with such care and respect, never trying to pressure her, overwhelm her or take away her independence. His defence of her with her ex was fabulous, and I applauded his firm stance with her very protective father. Their blossoming romance was beautifully written and captivating, making both smile and sigh. This is a book I will be reading more than once. It has my wholehearted recommendation..
The Decoy 5 AMAZING BRODY & ELLIS LOVING STARS! Ava Sutton has written my favorite NOT HIS BABY ever, and you all should know I am not a lover of the trope. I honestly DO NOT LIKE IT. It always feels forced for me, but not The Decoy. This author did the dang thang ya'll.
Brody Vaughn is the whole package all and I am not exaggerating. He is a professional football player, who not only was raised by a single mom but respects the heck out of her. When Ellis finds out she is pregnant and the sperm donor wants nothing to do with the baby it isn't even question if Brody is going to be what Ellis needs.
IT WAS ALREADY WHO THEY WERE MEANT TO BE. Ava wrote this book with SO MUCH EMOTION. This man is this baby's father. It's never a question to him. It was what he was put on this earth to do. Be the man Ellis wants ( because we all know Ellis Renwick doesn't NEED no man); and to be the baby's dad. There is not changing that in this universe or the next. The way Ellis lets him in is so special. It isn't lost on me that that part of her story was just as moving as the others.
The found family was amazing- and can we take a moment to give credit to THE MAMA RENWICK because she had to be the funniest side character Ava has ever written.. I DIED FOR HER SCENES!!
Tropes: - NFL Player - Not His Baby - Strong FMC - ACTS OF SERVICE MMC - They Fall at the same time - Dog Parents
Everything about the end of this series was perfect. I am sad to leave the Titans but I am so ready for my girl to conquer everything she sets out to write! Thanks to her and her team for letting me BETA!! The world needs more Brody Vaughn's.
This was my first book by Ava and when I tell you that I loved every moment from start to end I truly did 🤍
Ellis is an amazing independent woman who gets involved with the wrong man and ends up pregnant she decides to handle her news and let him know and he says he doesn’t want to be a part of it. She realizes that she is okay and she will raise her baby with the support of her family and even herself. She is strong and in a sense is afraid to accept help but not because she doesn’t want it but because she is the one who figures everything out for the players and for herself.
Brody is our amazing loving protector of all things and he is the one that is willing to do anything and everything for Ellis even go with her to her doctors appointment and be encouraging and care taker of her and all her needs. He is protective of her and is willing to go to any length for her and to keep her safe and make her feel seen and understood. He is all the amazing green flags but to see how he caters to Ellis and how there friendship is so natural from the beginning but the fact that he swore to always help any women in need made me melt !
Going from work colleagues to friends to lovers was everything !!!!
The way they did fake relationship and not his baby and how it all closed in so beautifully with them was perfection !! There chemistry was everything !
I can’t wait to keep reading the rest of theses books! This was everything!
Tropes Football Romance Fake Relationship Not His Baby
Ava does it again! She wrote an amazing book with the most swoony man. I hated seeing this series end! But gosh it was just so good!
Brody FREAKING Vaughn. The world needs more men like this, and I will absolutely stand by that. There are not many men like this man.
This man had me swooning over how consistently he showed up for Ellis. No questions ever asked or anything in exchange. Just simply showed up. His care never felt like empty promises. He was present, protective, and ready to support her and her baby without making her feel like she couldn’t handle things herself. Acts of service is absolutely his love language, and I ate that right up. Every bit of it.
And I loved Ellis just as much. She’s smart, independent, and knows what she deserves. I love.a strong FMC so much. Watching her make room for someone to care for her without losing that confidence was one of my favorite parts of their relationship.
I felt like everything flowed so naturally. Their friendship grew into a real relationship. Then seeing them become a family made this story even sweeter. Brody brings all that devotion into the bedroom, too, and Ellis has no problem asking for what she wants. I loved that about her.

Thank you Ava so incredibly much for allowing me to read this ARC!! I absolutely loved these two so much! I can’t wait for what comes next from you!
I received an advanced reader copy of this book, and I’m so excited to share my honest review!
I always enjoy Ava’s books, and this one was no exception! Ellis Renwick is a total boss lady—independent, confident, and completely capable of handling herself. But when she finds herself pregnant by her hookup, a popular hockey player who wants absolutely nothing to do with the baby, she suddenly finds herself navigating everything on her own. Enter Brody Vaughn. A professional football player who has known Ellis both socially and professionally, Brody notices she’s going through something and decides he’s going to be there for her. Sure, he’s always found her attractive, so maybe that plays a little part in his motivation, but there’s so much more to Brody than that.
Having been raised by a single mom after his own father walked away, Brody knows exactly what it means to be left behind—and he refuses to let Ellis go through that alone. The more time they spend together, the more Brody supports her, and what starts as friendship slowly turns into something so much more. And watching him fall for Ellis while being there for her every step of the way? SWOON. And can we talk about a man who looks at a pregnant woman carrying another man’s baby and essentially says, “That baby is mine, and so is this family”?! Brody Vaughn was EVERYTHING. The protective energy, the way he showed up, and the fact that he never made Ellis feel like she had to navigate any of it alone… absolutely loved.
"There. Now you have my direct number," he says firmly. "I don't care if it's three am and you have a craving for ice cream, if you feel sick, or if you just need someone to talk to, I want you to call me. Promise me, Ellis." (The Decoy, Pg. 40).

I love love love the Gridiron Legacy Series, and I don't know how she does it, but Ava Sutton tops the last one every time.
I was NOT expecting to like Brody as much as I did. I thought for sure I'd enjoy it, but he wouldn't be my favorite. From his very first pov he had me. The way he immediately, with no hesitation, stepped up for a role he didn't have to take any part in, and the way that man took care of his woman 🤭 I loved how it started as a platonic relationship, he just wanted to be there for her, yeah there had always been attraction there, but I really enjoyed how Sutton allowed the relationship to progress and shift from platonic to romantic in an authentic and genuine way.
My sweet girl Ellis, she had me in tears over how much she wasn't used to being treated right and loved loudly. When she finally gave in and was able to come to the realization that Brody is pure and truly wants to be there for her and the baby. 😭
I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone, especially if you love a professional football player taking care of the independent soon-to-be single mom. Acts of service are a HUGE part of this book, I truly believe there isn't anything Brody wouldn't do for Ellis.
As always, thank you to Ava Sutton and Wordsmith PR for this opportunity. I can't wait for the next! 🏈
Ellis loves her life. She works for her family’s company, loves her job and enjoys her no-strings-attached situationship with a hot hockey player. But then she discovers that she’s pregnant and said hockey player shows his true colors leaving her and the baby alone. But then her friend’s friend Brody steps in. The hot football player keeps showing up for her and her baby. Protecting them, caring for them, claiming them. But when her father finds out who the biological dad is their lives are in danger of being turned upside down.
The Decoy is book 4 in the Gridiron Legacy by Ava Sutton. It’s a standalone in this interconnected series.
I’m not the biggest fan of this whole it’s-not-his-baby-thing to be honest but I do love Ava’s books so I knew I had to read it. And I honestly loved it. Brody is the walking green flag if I ever saw one. He’s selfless, caring, protective, charming, understanding, flirty, He is the whole package you could ever ask for in a man. And while I do tend to love the bad boy a bit more in my books I couldn’t but swoon and fall in love with Brody. Ellis is also such an amazing character. I loved everything about her. How she carries herself, she’s levelheaded and controlled. Their love story is so cute. It’s one of those that happen slow but suddenly you're right in the middle of it without even knowing how you ended up there. 😅 It’s great. There is a little bit of suspense but really not a lot. Potentially there could have been more suspense because the opportunity was there but I’m glad it didn't happen so I can’t complain about the little suspense. 😂
I was sad to see this series end, but Brody and Ellis’s story was the perfect ending. As someone who grew up in Ohio, Brody Vaughn was a man after my own heart, being from small town Ohio and working hard to first rep the Scarlet and Gray at Ohio State, then worked even harder while there to make it to the NFL. Let’s not forget,he also adopted a dog and named him Buckeye, along with being one of the most humble people you would meet. Brody and Ellis may have fallen hard and fast, but I loved watching these two fall in love together and build their family. Brody and Ellis, start out as friends when he hears her talking to her brother about being pregnant and going to her first appointment alone and offers to take her, so she doesn’t have to go alone. From that first appointment on and everything else in between, Brody was there for Ellis and the baby. Ellis was originally determined to be the badass that she is and was going to raise the baby on her own, but Brody stepped up in ways she never imagined and claimed her and the baby as his, without any hesitation. Brody became the the pillar of strength Ellis needed and She helped turn his house into the home, he had dreamed of. I loved how their families and found family stepped up to support them. Brody and Ellis might not have been looking for love at first, but ended up getting a HEA that they only thought of in their wildest dreams.
Title- The Decoy Author- Ava Sutton Genre- Contemporary, Sports Romance Series- Gridiron Legacy Book 4
Trope City- 🏈 Boss FMC 🏈 Found Family 🏈 Not His Baby 🏈 Fake Dating 🏈 Football Player MMC 🏈 Protective Hero
Ellis Renwick (FMC) is known for her cool, calm, collected demeanor. She’s a part of her family’s mega successful legacy and company, but Ellis has earned every bit of her part. She’s constantly working. When she isn’t, she dabbles in a very disconnected situationship. Turns out, pregnancies still happen by accident. Though shocked, Ellis handled this like she handles everything else- cool, calm, professional and collected. The father? Not so much.. he throws a full tantrum and wants nothing to do with Ellis or their child moving forward. Enter Brody (MMC) Vaughn. Brody plays football professionally for the Titans. He was raised by a single mom and has a special perspective on women raising kids alone. He overhears a private phone call that reveals Ellis is pregnant. He offers to attend her appointment and support her. Could he really just be doing that out of the goodness of his heart? Does selflessness like that exist? And if it does, can it morph into something genuine? Oooo this one is a tear jerker mixed with a spicy situation, possessive and protective relationship, a marketing disaster and everything in between! I love this series!
Thank you Wordsmith Publicity for sharing this ARC with me. 🏈🫶🏻
Well I have found my new favourite Ava book... I devoured this one in a day. From the very first page I was hooked and didn't want to stop. Ava clearly knew that Not His Baby is becoming one of my favourite tropes and she went here, have this perfection.
Brody, Brody, Brody just went and got himself on my top book boyfriend list because HOT DAMN this man is perfection. The way he stepped up, the sweetness, the acts of service, the maturity, the dirty mouth, need I say more!?!
Ellis was so strong and sassy and i absolutely loved her as an FMC and she was letting no man walk all over her! Such a boss babe who fits among the strong AF women of this series
The way Brody softened her hard exterior was so beautiful and how he just proved time and time again that she wasn't alone!
The sweetest romance that couldn't have ended this amazing series any better! All the stars, I loved them!

Bonus Points go to Ellis' mum, she was such a fun side character, I found her hilarious and she brought such light hearted fun to the story
I am beyond excited to head to the Colorado Reign series! BRING IT ON!
Thankyou to Ava and Wordsmith Publicity for the opportunity to read this one early 🫶🏻
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐲 is the 4th book in the Gridiron Legacy series by Ava Sutton, and man did she save the best for last with Brody and Ellis’ mash-up of fake relationship, “not his baby,” football romance magic! Brody Vaughn broke the mold of book boyfriends like 6% into the book with a definitive 3-word statement that allowed for no argument. My heart melted right there. That’s a real man. He found a woman feeling vulnerable over an upcoming appointment, and swooped in like a superhero to offer support! Throughout the story, he was her rock, her shoulder, her partner, her protector, but still always allowed her to still shine as the strong, confident boss woman she was! They cheered each other on, which I loved. Their connection just was undeniable and palpable. From the sweet moments to the emotional aspects to the device-melting passion, they brought it all with flare! Absolutely swoon-worthy! I couldn’t put this book down at all, and now I’m realizing that I will miss all these characters! They brought such a fun sense of camaraderie, whether it was the teammates, the ladies, or the extended families, with so much witty banter, found family vibes, and football, too. Here’s hoping the author will decide to give us another generation!🤞🏻
I received an ARC for free, and am leaving this review voluntarily. 5⭐️ 4🌶
I was so lucky to get to read an ARC copy of this book and considering how excited I was about it when it was announced I couldn't wait to read it! Brody and Ellis were great characters to read about and even better as a couple... being in each other's orbits due to their careers and their friend group it was plain to see when they were around each other that there was possibly something more between them. I loved how once Brody realizes that Ellis is pregnant and dealing with all these changes he doesn't hesitate to help her and from there he just continues to completely fall for her.. one of my favorite things about them is as they get to know more about each other they realize they are both owners of two awesome dogs who became main characters to the story and i love how the dogs bring the couple together even more! Throughout the story Brody proves to be the ideal book boyfriend in how he steps up for Ellis, but being careful not to overstep and when they eventually give in to their feelings and their undeniable chemistry the story is full of romance and spice between our protective down bad mmc and our independent boss lady fmc! I love how Ava writes a pregnancy trope and putting a character like Brody Vaughn into a not his baby story was top tier! I loved everything about this book..
I always love a lady boss trope! Ellis is such a badasssss woman! U go girllllll! And Brody… is he real?? I’ve loved him since the first time he appeared with Ellis. IS HE REAL?! There’s no way we can find men like him in the real world 😭😒 It’s not fair that he’s a fictional man…
Accepting someone’s baby can be hard, but it wasn’t hard for him because he loves Ellis so much. 🥺 I’m melting 🥲🥲 They fall in love very fast and REALLY fall hard for each other. I love their chemistry right from the start, and I love the storyline so much, especially how Brody treats women right, especially Ellis, because of his upbringing and his relationship with his mom. 🥺🥺🥺 That was such a touching point for me. And my heart fluttered SO many times while reading this. 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺 This couple is perfeeeectttttt!!! 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻
BTW, I need to mention that… my blood was boiling right from the start. I sincerely hope we don’t get men like Dylan in our lives, amen. 🙏🏻 And surprisingly, in real life, there are so many men like him. 🥲
It’s a perfect, fast-paced romance read with the “not his baby” trope and insta-love, with a touch of sports romance and just the right amount of spice too!!! 🌶️
And I NEED to read the other books in this series ASAP!!!!!! 😭🫶🏻
Thank you for the ARC, Ava Sutton & Wordsmith Publicity!! 💛
