Miguel de Cervantes famously wrote, "Love and war are the same thing, and stratagems and policy are as allowable in the one as in the other." But for Vincenzo Barone, the ruthless, golden-eyed Don of Cedarshire's Mafia Empire, love isn't a war; affection is either given willingly or taken by force. Decades of brutality have taught him that you either take what is yours or get left behind.

Enter Sloane Nash: a fiercely independent, silver-eyed baker with an ailing mother, a deadbeat father, and a spine of steel, who literally pops into his life via a pop-out cake.

In Rebecca Thompson's The Fall of Gold, readers are thrown onto the battlefield of love to answer a central question: Will this ruthless predator surrender his control for a greater prize, or will his power allow his wily prey to slip through his fingers?

As someone who is used to romance and dark romance female leads often being weak and automatically subservient to the dark male lead, Sloane is a breath of fresh air. Molded by a turbulent home life, she isn't afraid to set boundaries, push back, and regularly outsmart the Don. She is, quite frankly, a nightmare for a man like Vincenzo. Yet her stubborn self-reliance is a double-edged sword, frequently placing her in dangerous situations that put her at odds with him.

Vincenzo starts as the quintessential dark romance hero: ruthless, controlling, obsessive, and arrogant. But Thompson gives him genuine substance. Throughout the story, the "monster" Vincenzo morphs into the Prince Enzo. We see a lot more of his softer, thoughtful, charming, romantic, chivalrous side as the story goes on. He learns (in the words of Michael Jackson) that love is not possession and that love needs expression.

I do love that Vincenzo struggles between the two sides of himself often, as breaking out of the mold he was raised in isn't the easiest thing to do, especially when his mother and the mafia life interfere with his growth, which often causes him to backslide into the monster.

I appreciate how, despite the deeper their relationship goes, they don't automatically lose the core of who they are before falling into each other's orbits. They adapt and grow together, transforming an inherently toxic power dynamic into a partnership of equals.

Written in the first person, the novel shines through Thompson's strong characterization. Both Sloane and Vincenzo possess distinct, internally consistent voices, and even the extensive supporting cast feels vivid and unique.

The Fall of Gold is a treat for romance and dark romance lovers alike. Packed with sharp writing, an interesting plot, spicy scenes, natural character development, delicious enemies-to-lovers tension, and a cliffhanger ending that sets up the Barone & Nash series, this book earns a high recommendation and deserves a spot on your bookshelf.
