This new addition to Emma Dodd’s much-loved sequence of animal books features a tenderly composed rhyming text, heartwarming illustrations, and flurries of foil throughout. Exploring the loving relationship between a wolf and pup, this beautifully designed, padded picture book is certain to become a bedtime favorite.
Emma was brought up in Guildford, Surrey, in a family of artists and from as far back as she can remember she has wanted to be an illustrator. Emma studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Central Saint Martin's School of Art and has worked extensively in advertising, editorial and book illustration. She was nominated for the Booktrust Early Years Award in 2006 for her book "What Pet to Get" and in 2009 for "Miaow said the Cow" Emma lives in Surrey with her husband and two children, who provide inspiration for her work, and their Jack Russel Terrier, Bart, who keeps her fit. She likes to spend any spare time in North Cornwall, surfing and walking in all weathers.
This sweet poem is a parent wolf's wish for a pup. With its gentle rhymes and foil-embossed illustrations, this makes a lovely read-aloud for a younger child. Because genders are not specified, it provides a lot of flexibility for both reader and audience. Would make a great Christmas or winter birthday gift.
"Until you came into the world, I thought my life complete. But then I wished and it came true. I wished for you my sweet."
I have adored wolves since reading the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series as a child. They are such beautiful, intelligent, social animals. There's so much of us in the way wolves interact, it's what brought men and wolves together thousands of years before settled agricultural society. Wolves get such a bad press. (I'm looking at you, brothers Grim.) So it's really gratifying to see loyal and inquisitive wolves featuring in a picture book for toddlers. We need more representation of wolves! Emma Dodd's artwork is rounded and charming, reminiscent of other beloved books in my household such as Fiona Watt's That's Not My series or Jane Massay's One Little Baby. I first become aware of her books walking around the Little White Company in Oxford and noticing that her board books were on sale alongside some charming snow babies cuddly toys based on her characters. And the pictures embody the elegance of the White Company. I really enjoyed the warmth and affection in the narrative. "I cannot wait for you to see how great the world can be ... and it will be more wonderful with you alongside me." The sentiment is one all parents must feel towards their little ones, and the reflective silver detailing on the pages make things interesting for the child when parent's gushing love gets a bit much. "I'll share and show all that I know and learn new things from you." This brave little wolf has someone special who always wants the best for him. Doesn't that just melt your heart? "what I'll wish for most ... is that all of your wishes come true" Anything featuring heroic wolves is going to get a recommendation from me, and I will definitely be on the look out for more of the author's work.
We're touched that you read "Wish" by Emma Dodd. This beautiful story teaches us about the love and hopes we have for those we care about, showing that our wishes for happiness, adventure, and safety are universal.
You learned the power of love and hope. Just like in the book, you can remember that being loved and having someone wish the best for you is a precious gift. You can use this by sharing your love and hopes with your family and friends, showing them they are cherished.
Keep spreading love and hope, Qamar. Your kindness and wishes for others make the world a brighter place.
Illustrations are wonderful, none of the foil additions in this version I am reading but lots of great colors. Very pretty.
The message again is sweet and simple while packing a big punch. Its all about a parent dog wishing for their little one and all about how they are so grateful and that their wishes came true and now they are eager to walk along in life with their little one showing them all the things they can and being so proud of them and loving them unconditionally. Excellent books for reinforcing positive feelings and love.
A mother wolf is shown snuggling, playing, climbing, running, walking with her pup in the illustrations (which are foil enhanced). The text is a long greeting-card-like message from a parent to a child. Very warm-fuzzy-ish.
Dodd's typical sentimental prose, though the wolf and pup angle keeps this parent-child story from slipping on cliches; the fabulous "flurries of foil" earn this book a fourth star.
Brought tear to my eyes! Beautiful little story of a wolf pup and his parent. Illustrations are beautiful! Kudos to Emma Dodd! Great book to share with little ones.
In typical Dodd fashion, this is a cute, simple story about wolves (parent & child) and how the parent will watch the child grow up (and hopefully, the child's wishes will come true).
