Rate this book
Are these Gotham's newest heroes...or villains? The future is here at Gotham Academy.

Gotham Academy is haunted!

At the beginning of the term, Olive Silverlock returned to Gotham Academy a shadow of her former self. But thanks to her new friendships and their Detective Club sleuthing, Olive was finally starting to feel whole again.

Then, abruptly, Olive’s mother died—or, she seemed to. In the weeks after the funeral, Olive begins seeing her mother around the school. An Arkham Asylum patient with a deadly dark side, Sybil Silverlock was a powerful and complicated woman. Could her spirit be reaching out from beyond the grave? And if so, is it motherly Sybil who haunts Olive—or her deadly alter ego Calamity?

Plus, the kids hunt a werewolf on campus and Maps teams up with the Academy’s newest transfer, Damian Wayne!

Writers Becky Cloonan and Brenden Fletcher team with artists Karl Kerschl and Mingjue Helen Chen for GOTHAM ACADEMY VOL. 2: CALAMITY.

This is a perfect graphic novel for children or YA, and also for grown-ups like me of course. I think one of the reasons I enjoy this series is because Map's reminds me of Jubilation Lee, whom I adore. And, this graphic novel has a lot of Maps in it. Don't take me wrong. I like Olive also, and she has an important part in this volume also with trying to come to terms with her mother's death.

But, it's Map's adventure with Damian Wayne and Robin (well a Robin since it's apparently a group of Robin's now) that really makes this volume enjoyable. Olive is always so serious and Map is instead so wonderfully cheerful and it's a pure delight to read about Map's adventures. It was also nice to see that Map's brother Kyle had a big role also. The more I read the more I feel that this series is becoming a favorite of mine. It's really nice to have something a bit lighter to read now and then.

The art was good, however, the art in the first issue with felt a bit off, (see above) but other than that the whole volume was good. I do feel that it was a bit too fast to read it. Which not necessary is a bad thing, but I do want to read more.

The first volume was good. This one was even better. The stories felt a bit stronger in this one and I never felt like I was missing something like I did in the last volume while I read it.

4.5 stars

This one was really good!

It starts with a team up of Damian and Maps finding something mysterious and joining hands and its a fun and forgettable stories and I kinda liked it. And then we check on with the detctive club and whatever stories they have got like Maps getting into trouble and then Olive having to deal with her love life, the secrets of Tristan, werewolf attacks and then finally learning who her mother was aka a villain named Calamity and her strange origins and her family secrets! Its all done so well and also Clayface and Hugo Strange!

Its a volume with lots of stories and drama and tension and does well to manage this but sometimes its a mess and some events may feel out of place or sudden but still it does a good job at explaining and setting the mystery and also a great final volume where the team faces off against great threats so yeah good writing on that part and I loved the art here, its really good!

This volume was much better than the first collection. Karl Kershel's art is fantastic. It has a real animation vibe to it. The stories have gotten better to, except for the issue with Damian Wayne in it. That issue felt shoehorned in. The book is basically Scooby Doo set in Gotham. I like that they are finally adding some subplots and backstories, such as Calamity.

Received an advance copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Gotham Academy is so good! This volume opens with a really fun poem from Maps, like a Detective Club cheer. We get some supernatural drama, a trip to Arkham Asylum, and more of their friendship group.

I wish this series was still ongoing. It'll be sad to say goodbye to these characters once I finish catching up.

(Received from Netgalley for review.)

This is quite an improvement over the first volume. The book seems to have hit its stride, and I really enjoyed reading it. Olive's mystery is, I think, more or less resolved, and it unfolds in a way that makes a certain amount of sense, by Gotham standards. It actually ended up being a little more interesting than I had expected. The group of main characters owes a bit to the Scoobies, which is not a bad thing in my eyes. I'm glad this book is still going, because I honestly think it's showing some real promise now, and I think it could do really well with the younger female audience that DC had been losing to Marvel titles like Ms. Marvel and Squirrel Girl. And a more diverse audience is a larger audience, DC.

This was a story I read as part of the #GettingGraphic readalong I am hosting today and I really enjoyed this second volume. What I love about this is the Batman setting and the amazing colour tones and artwork. The story is always engaging and fun, but the artwork always sells me on this series :)

Overall I think that this did develop the plot of Olive and Maps (Maps is by far the cutest and my most favourite of the characters) as we see them following the strings of a mystery to discover who/what Calamity is. I definitely found it engaging, and it's a quick, beautiful read. 4*s (not quite as solid a story as vol. 1, but still very fun)

Nice to see Olive, Maps, and the others again. Also nice to Damian Wayne and Red Robin. Glad to learn more about the Silverlocks and their connection with Calamity.

Can't wait to read the next Gotham Academy comic!!!

Did anyone else feel like parts of this book were just...missing? Scenes just crashed up against each other with no transition. In addition to the art taking a turn for the muddy, it made things hard to follow.

GA seems to be pretty much as announced in the blurbs... a teen or tween Batman-adjacent adventure/detective/supernatural story -- the DC universe's version of the Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew show from the 80's, or the Scooby Gang without a talking Great Dane.

As such, it is on the fringes of how I like my comics as an adult. The art is 98% good (three exceptions follow*); the intersection of words and pictures supports the story, and the plot is moderately complex with hints of the world outside the Academy and Detective Club adventures.
Guest appearances by Riko (We Are Robin), Damian Wayne (in uniform and in mufti), Red Robin, and even an uncharacteristically mellow, mysteriously resurrected, amnesiac Talon/zombie. Regular appearances by Dr. Kirk Langstrom (science) , Hugo Strange (a counselor, of course), and Simon Trent (the Grey Ghost, and Clayface nemesis, of the DC Animated Universe).

*My three on-going exceptions to the thought that "the art is good": 1) a personal issue, but I like bold, superhero colors a strong lines in my DC comics, even on milder titles like Gotham Academy, and the artwork here favors pastels and some mildly impressionistic techniques; 2) a technique issue -- the school uniform skirts are a blue-black plaid, and you can see that they are taken from stock patterns because anytime two girls stand adjacent to each other, the pattern crosses identically across the skirts. It's noticeable. I don't know how the effect is produced, and maybe it is intentional, but I'd think the colorist or artist could tilt and slide the pattern template a bit across everyone's garments and make it look more realistic; 3) There have a been a couple instances on the covers, and sorry to go on about skirts again, of adding to the watsitcalled "hypersexualization" of the female teen characters, portraying them in mini skirt rather than the a (normal, in my experience) midi-skirt of private school uniforms.
But, like I said above, this is maybe 2% of the art. On the whole, it's well rendered, clear, explains the plot, and makesme like the characters and respect the artists.

I liked this but I didn't like that the Robins are okay with a whole bunch of untrained kids running around fighting villains. Number 1 it goes against Tim's character and 2 the bats would lose his goddam mind on them. Granted I haven't read the "We are Robin" story arc so maybe Batman doesn't care anymore but Tim would.

Other then that beef the story was okay and the artwork was cute.

I enjoyed this second volume, even though it didn't feel quite as cohesive as the first one did. It was still really great to be reunited with the gang, and I have a soft spot for SOMEONE who makes an appearance ;)

Ooo, the plot thickens! I didn't enjoy this one as much as book one, but it was nice to learn a smidgen more about Tristan and I'm so curious about this whole Calamity thing, I can't wait for the Detective Club to work it all out!

Not as good as the first but I liked that we got to know a lot more about Olive's mom and more about Olive herself. Looking forward to Vol. 3 :)

Fun second volume of the series. More supernatural creatures, including a werewolf and a half bat half boy (not to be confused with Batman). I enjoy reading this series and plan on continuing it.

Gotham Academy Vol 2: Calamity by Becky Cloonan and Brendan Fletcher picks up at issue #7 of the series and takes us through issue #12 as it reveals more and more of Olive's past as we peak into the going ons at Gotham's prestigious prep school.

Olive Silverlock and her crew of intrepid teenage investigators of mysteries both normal and paranormal are faced this time around with werewolves and were-bats and ghosts. But also with appearances by the likes of Dr. Langstrom The Man-Bat, The Riddler, Damian the son of Bruce Wayne and the Red Robin as well.

Central to the story is the search by Olive Silverlock into her past and the identity of her mother. A woman she is beginning to learn was a tragic villain whose power of combustion may have caused not only great damage but lives. A power that may be raging to be free inside Olive as well.

What I think I really like about this book is it's originality. Yes it borrows from various themes we all know, teenage sleuths and teenage angst. But it also deals with more adult themes such as acceptance and loss. Olive is grieving for her mother but is beginning to realize that her mother may actually be alive. A fact that is at times both hopeful and terrible. She is also learning that she was sent to Gotham Academy less for her own well being but perhaps so that she could be watched.

Calamity, the second storyline in Gotham Academy gives more time to the secondary characters this time around. Especially the lovable Mia "Maps" Mizoguchi. Maps takes up much of the early part of this story and her dealings with the angry and grumpy Damian Wayne and her geek out moments with the Red Robin remind us that these characters are really only kids.

Gotham Academy is a terrific departure from the normal Batman lines, staying fun and cool while maintaining the series overall dark theme. This is Scooby Doo meets Batman in a haunted school campus. It really is that much fun!

This volume was even better than the first volume! I absolutely love where the plot is going and the character development. I actually see myself buying the single issues of this series now instead of waiting for the trade paperbacks. I may even do a review on the first two volumes so be sure to stay tuned in.

I was super disappointed, this was one of the series I was most impressed with initially but everything, the story, the graphics, the page design, it all seemed a bit all over the place in this volume.

More like 3.5 stars. To me this one felt a little more disjointed and had more fluffy filler than the first volume. I really liked learning more about Olive's family history and her Mom's mysterious past. I wasn't expecting the villain who was unmasked and liked the overall Scooby-Doo vibe. Interested to read what happens next.

That was a nice installment, and we really got to know some of the characters better and get a good background on their family.
This could stand as the end of the series, but I do know that there is a Gotham Academy: Second Semester series, so depending on my mood I might read that.

Overall, this was fun and had a great art style. The superhero/supervillian characters were fairly well thought out and the way they came to be(told through monologues, of course, cause how else would they tell us?!) seemed believable.

Maps never gets old, neither does Olive or the plot. I really love this series. The art is fantastic and so is the writing. I think I like this volume better than the first. Definitely worth reading this series, especially if you like young adult comics. And definitely fun reading a second time around.

This starts with this long rhyming poem that was pretty uninteresting and a bit like filler material. In issue7, Maps hand gets stuck with Damian Waynes hand and some magical things keep happening. Issue 8 Olive’s mother has passed on. Everyone is trying to deal with this. Kyle confronts Tristan about his differences. Olive gets a letter from her mother. Issue 9: More mysterious happenings. We learn more about Tristan and how he and Olive ended up at the school. Issue 10 Olives mother may still be alive. Issue 11: Olive learns more about her family. Issue 12 the plot thickens. And everything ends nicely.
