Buffy, Xander, and Willow set out on a journey to find a supernatural solution in a world sorely lacking magic. This trio of friends will confront new enemies-a superbeing bent on revenge, a Slayer gone rogue, and the ancient god who created vampires-in a battle that will change the shape of the world. Buffy, with a little help from her friends, will rediscover what it truly means to be a Slayer.

These were much better than the previous season 9 volumes, I think. It has been awhile since I read the previous ones (and I don't count the "Wonderland" with Willow as really a season 9 but more standalone).
This is a pretty decent collection and wrap up to Buffy Season 9. On paper, the plot and arc sound perfect— but it suffers from the Big Bad being underwhelming. Simone is so one-note, and the inclusion of Severin doesn’t help; both characters are just so basic, and they didn’t add anything to this season, especially not the climax. The first half of this volume was more intriguing to me than the second, even though the second half had way higher stakes— this is probably due to the lack of threat from the villains. But the threat to Dawn’s existence was clever and really sad; it made for some really good moments between Dawn and Spike, etc. Seeing the Deeper Well again was very exciting, but the scenes in the Well felt disjointed and all over the place. Again, on paper it sounds epic, but the final showdown there just didn’t really translate well on panel. The best thing in this was the return of ILLYRIA! Her return was long awaited, and it was pretty worth it. She had some fun moments with Buffy, and then we really started to explore just how much she really was linked to Fred. Was Fred truly dead, or was she apart of Illyria, a shared soul? Those questions aren’t answered, but I feel like they were hinted at just enough to be satisfying. Illyria was the MVP in the end, and her sacrifice was such a great path for her character— it’s a shame later seasons disrespect it and her so much. The Billy story, Love vs. Life, was also really great; it’s a shame he’s written out after this, but it seems like no one other than Jane Espenson was interested and actually good at writing him, so whatever. Billy and his crew could have easily had their own spinoff series. So yeah, this season didn’t match the incredible Angel & Faith Season 9, but it was still overall a success. It was lacking in some areas, but stayed pretty consistent throughout. 4.5/5 stars.
One of the better Buffy volumes which completes several story arcs.
Buffy continues to hear the griping about how she destroyed the seed and to live the consequences of destroying the seed. When Illyria seeks Buffy’s help, she knows she is in trouble. It quickly becomes personal and Buffy must risk the world.
Though dark, this volume was a lot of fun, and included moments in which the dialogue was reminiscent of the brilliant dialogue from the TV series. So strange to think the show continued such a strong and imaginative life after it was over.
Todo sigue siendo bastante despropósito aunque no tan horrible como la anterior season. No entiendo por qué sale Illyria. Ni loca me hubiera imaginado que lo mejor iban a ser los momentos de Dawn y Xander.
This is as strong as the series has been since its inception. I'm pleased by how the conclusion here was able to make a full comeback from the craziness of the season prior. The Dawn arc was especially notable.
My one gripe is that Illyria lacked that humor her all-powerful arrogance usually has. And I didn't entirely buy why she was there in the first place. But it's ok, I'm always happy to see Drop Dead Fred again.
Battle, betrayal, bad blood, and Billy the Vampire Slayer - this was another tale of change and growth in the Slayer mythology.
Dawn begins to fade away from this world without a seed of magic and is left without a way to restore her as memories of the slayer's sister slowly seep from the minds of friends and family. Buffy is called to a new counsel, this one made up of demons, rather than watchers, who are trying to hold onto the last vestiges of magic in our world and keep them from falling into the hands of Severin, the syphon who keeps absorbing the magic of those he comes into contact with. Xander shows his impulsivity again as he betrays his friends to those who want to manipulate him. This is a roller coaster of emotion and excitement as the world shifts and shudders to accommodate the behaviours of this small group of friends.
Meanwhile, Billy the Vampire Slayer who I adore more and more as his arc continues is pulled into events and plans beyond his simple human life, opening up new possibilities and changes as he is called to do more. Yet he is also trapped between love and duty, wondering if he can have both or if the world will suffer for it.
I finished this a few days ago but forgot to mark it read. A solid season. Not as fun as what proceeds from it, but very strong ending and cool big bad and cool fights.
A dark and thrilling closure to Buffy Season 9. It wraps up neatly and works to set up a 10th season. Overall this arch was full of darkness, betrayal, and action. A must for any Buffy fan.
Good to see the comic leaving the fantastical fan fiction a little and getting back to the familiars: Facing death, depression, and strains on relationships.
The perfect post-nights literature - it packed a lot more of a punch than Volume 2 and was pretty exciting, but I'm not sure it feels like a Season all together.
What a great ending to the season. Really liked what they did with this season. The Willow portion was fun and the Dawn story arc was well done as well.
I love Buffy. Have for a long time now, and I may say I enjoyed this one. Thought the story line was good and it was nice to see old friends. Can't wait to see what happens in Season 10.
A strong conclusion. I really liked Season 9, even though it has its problems. Yes, it is a bit too apologetic for the shitshow that was Season 8 (although, in this case, you really can't be TOO apologetic), and yes, it does wander off a bit in the middle. Also, Angel & Faith half of S9 is better than BTVS. But both season arcs are surprisingly solid, with great characterisation, intriguing plots and respectful treatment of continuity, building upon plot lines from both BTVS and Angel TV shows, as well as S8 and After The Fall comics to create new and original stories. The result is fantastic, and I highly recommend giving S9 a chance even if you, like me, hated S8.
4.75 • I loved this volume! I really hate this Billy storyline but the other stories and art are so strong that it makes up for that. The art is generally gorgeous although some characters were hard to figure out. Sometimes Buffy just looked wrong and I thought Willow was a disaster but Spike, Xander, Dawn, and especially Illyria and D'Hoffryn were fantastic.
