'There are few situations in life which are more difficult to cope with than an adolescent son or daughter during the attempt to liberate themselves' Anna Freud was one of the most creative and innovative thinkers in the history of psychoanalysis, whose pioneering work in child analysis and development revolutionized the treatment of the young. This essential anthology of her writings includes extracts from her classic The Ego and the Mechanisms of Defence, as well as papers on normal and pathological child development, on adolescence, trauma, aggression and analytical technique. Together they offer a definitive overview of her entire career, displaying the richness, variety and originality of her thinking. 'An achievement of the first importance ... underlines the clarity and cogency of Anna Freud's thinking, [and] makes it accessible to a wide audience' Clifford Yorke, former Medical Director, the Anna Freud Centre, London
Noted Austrian-British psychoanalyst Anna Freud applied to child therapy.
Anna Freud, the sixth and last of Sigmund Freud and Martha Freud, followed the path of her father and contributed to the new field. Compared to her father, Freud's work emphasized the importance of the ego, and its ability to be trained socially.
There are two aspects of Psychodynamic School of Psychology: One that I Love, and another one that I Hate. This book encompasses the aspect that I Hate ✌🏻
She wrote in a more coherent, succinct and cautious manner than her father. There was also an inclination to group and categorize. Anna's exploration of transitory neurosis thoughout development makes one question whether Adler's interpretation of psychopathology as individual creativity in overcompensation indeed an oversimplification.
I was hoping for a larger section of her classic "Ego and the Mechanisms of Defence," but I found her concepts of 'identification with the aggressor' and 'developmental lines' really interesting and useful for my blog posts on psychoanalytic stuff. She was really conservative as a psychoanalyst, very preoccupied with preserving the legacy of her father: what a dutiful daughter. ;)
