Little white lies sometimes conceal deadly secrets.
Jimmy doesn’t believe depression led his elder brother to kill himself. The police ignore his urging to reopen the case and instead, direct him to the local busybody, Meinwen Jones. But when the self-proclaimed witch agrees to help him gather evidence of foul play, they uncover more than just white lies.
Meinwen discovers the brother had connections with one of her old friends, and his penthouse apartment doubles as a sado-masochist’s dungeon. While Jimmy is struggling with the revelations, Meinwen’s instant attraction to him compels her to establish herself as his dominant. Meanwhile, her friend from Wales arrives and he’s not averse to a bit of friendship with benefits, either. As Meinwen navigates the pitfalls of a three-way relationship, another murder occurs.
Will Meinwen and Jimmy uncover all the secrets beneath the white lies in time to prevent another death? Will she choose Jimmy or Dafydd? One of them might turn out to be the love of her life.
I received this book free via publishers in exchange for an honest review. I don't gush and give false praise – I don't believe that helps readers or authors so what you read is what I truly feel about a book.
I've not read the first book in this series but each seem to be complete stories and its not necessary to read in sequence to be able to follow the plots. I like romance, bit of spice and the paranormal so all the elements I enjoy contained in one book make for an enjoyable read you'd think. Well, I did enjoy this book but didn't “love” it and a one read is enough for me. Meinwen reminds me of Miss Marple – but a knitted yoghurt, BDSM loving, wiccan type one...somehow I felt Rachel tried to encompass too much with her and in fact I felt like this about the whole book. Its well plotted, no holes, well written but just “too much” somehow. I couldn't take to Meinwen and thats a big no-no ofr me if I don't like the heroine. I didn't dislike her – its just I couldn't seem to relate to her in any way. On the surface she's caring and yet under it I got the impression she was quite shallow.
Anyway Jimmy's just out of jail after ten years when he discovers his brother has committed suicide. He's not convinced as the letters from him talked of a lover and it seemed he was very happy so he asks Meinwen to look into it. Meinwen seems to have contacts with everyone and on the surface the people in the village all seem to know everything about each other, no secrets you'd think...but once she starts digging lots of secrets are uncovered and it seems the faces people wear in public hide a lot of actions done in secret. This makes it difficult to find out about Jimmy's brother and the more they do uncover the more perplexing the case seems to get. Add in further murder and attempted murders and the plots thicken to the point where I began to get confused (easily done with me sadly!) and had to keep retracing my steps to remember who did and said what. I think that’s where it went wrong for me, added to the fact that none of the characters seemed people I could really like. Although they were well written I felt most of them were very self serving and quite shallow and the sort if I met in real life I would avoid. That’s just a personal view of course as we all like different things and I'm simply writing how it seems from my point of view. The sex scenes and the BSDM elements are quite light though occasionally graphic and just didn't do anything for me, maybe because I wasn't keen on any of the characters?
Meinwen finally unravels all of course, and the multiple separate strands of plots all begin to weave together so we can see exactly what occurred and the how and why of course. Its a neat ending with everything set out and no big holes in the plots but overall a book I was happy to read once then put aside.
At 267 pages for £3.90 its not cheap but not the most expensive either. If it had gone in my keepers file for re reading I'd say its good value but for a one off read not great value.
Stars: remember its a personal taste issue – you might love all the elements that didn't do it for me of course – anyway I'm giving three and a half. Its better than just OK but not good enough IMO for me to give four star rating.
