Oh I loved this so much! From the first chapter you could feel the chemistry!
Matt and Stellans first meeting was electric stellan eorked for an agency who catches people in compromising positions for a price when he took the job he didn’t know who Matt was he was just a target what he didn’t know was that he was famous and in the closet and he tried to take it back but couldn’t
Fast forward 7 months later and Matt walks into stellans workplace getting fitted for a suit and Matt is pissed! Stellan tries to explain but he doesn’t believe him
But Matt can feel the intensity between them there’s something there something he’s never let himself have he’s a public figure he’s deeply in the closet but he’s trying to see what’s there
A nda no phone and suddenly Stellan is in Matt’s apartment and the chemistry and heat is instant
They are careful it’s no feelings no strings but that never works out cleanly and both catch feelings
Stellan likes watching Matt play hockey he likes how he takes control
Matt likes to see Stellan in his element when he’s working with the kids at his charity
What I loved so much was when the agency saw Stellan at Matt’s game they threatened him because he signed an nda and wasn’t supposed to be near Matt and Matt went into protective mode with his manager Reid
When Stellan offered to take the hit for Matt that changed something for Matt too and that meeeeeeting they both hit it out of the park
Casual hookups turned into sleep overs and toothbrushes left behind coffee in the morning and mutual pining!
Of course everything never goes smoothly so when Matt has the idea to have Stellan and Naomi attend their team fundraiser to get donations for stellans charity he tells himself it will be ok and it is for awhile until Matt’s teammate sees how they are interacting and how close they seem and Matt says something he shouldn’t and stellan heard him
Their conversation after was awful stellan explained how he couldn’t let himself be small he didn’t want Matt to come out to the world but wanted the people who mattered the most to know like his parents who were coming for thanksgiving! Stellan walked away to protect his heart
Matt tried but he broke down painting in his fury and his mom saw and he took the step he told them everything how he fell in love how he screwed it up and how he fell in love with a man! Oh my god the smile I had when his dad said so you’re giving up?

I've come to enjoy Zarah Detand's writing and usually I jump on every opportunity to review an ARC by her. 'Game On' had a blurb though, that left me deeply suspicious because it hinted at one of the protagonists was involved in something so morally questionable that I nearly passed this on.
In retrospect, I'm glad I did. In some ways, 'Game On' is a typical sports romance: closeted hockey-player who cannot afford at all costs, to come out. But Matt Harkins and Stellan meet in such a unique way that defy all expectations and this small but transformative encounter leads to far-reaching consequences for the both of them. It also leads to a few personal revelations that set the ball rolling for them to meet again, seven months on, each changed in different ways because of what happened during that pivotal moment in time.
I really enjoyed their unconventional beginning though, rocky as it is (there's quite a degree of experimentation here), and the gradual build-up that follows. The relationship unfolds as a journey of self-discovery, with every tentative step Matt takes bringing him closer to redefining both his identity and his sexuality.
Detand does tease out the nuances of this relationship: Matt is too much of a hgh-profile sports figure so publicly loved that there isn't a way to live authentically the way he wants to and not face the repercussions of doing so. Stellan in contrast, is open and out, and is well aware that whatever arrangement that he and Matt have going on, must absolutely work around these restraints. Neither is willing to define what they are becoming to each other, but as with stumbling into unexpectedly good things, something must eventually give.
This tension though, of juggling the personal and the professional, is threaded throughout the book and isn't brought to fruition by the end. Instead, the ending swerves around the issue, in favour of a HFN with an injected dose of realism.
There isn't a public reckoning from Matt coming out (it seems like he's closeted to everyone else still but to his close friends and family) and his relationship with Stellan is still unsettlingly pitched as a work in progress than one with a sense of permanence. A more conclusive ending perhaps, was what I'd hoped for but didn't exactly get. By the epilogue I found myself wondering whether I had somehow missed a chapter or whether the story was deliberately setting up a sequel.

I'm writing an honest review after receiving and ARC from NetGalley and the publisher.
Firstly, I'm just a huge Zarah Detand fan, as it is. There's just something about her writing style that I absolutely love. The humor always mixed in, just my style. I'm always here for it.
Stellan and Matt meet when Stellan is hired to do an unusual job. Try and get some dirt brought up in the form of pictures of hockey captain Matt Harkins. Stellan has a serious moral dilemma and the book jumps off months after that encounter. Stellan is an independent, gay man, living his life with his brother, after an early life in the foster care system. Matt's closeted, and wishing he couldn't be, but not able to fathom any way in which he can be out.
They run into each other again when Matt's getting fitted for a special event suit/tux, and although that snafu that Stellan took part in created a personal issue for Matt, it wasn't a career-blow-up issue. They strike up an unlikely arrangement and proceed to see each other periodically from then on.
Their relationship grows naturally and fairly organically through their arrangement. You get to watch them grow with each other, and as individuals: Matt becoming more of who he's always wanted to be; Stellan learning he can be cared for and not always having to take the lead. It's not forced or fast, it's a nice and sweet progression of their relationship into love.
There's inclusion of Stellan and Naomi's personal charity, Suit Up Wednesdays, which helps foster kids 'suit up' in donated professional clothing, and attitude to match, to help these kids get a better leg up in job interviews, job fairs, and other important areas of their life they may need help with.
Naomi and Reid are a freaking pair and I love their incessant banter.
The main and side characters are lovable, snarky, witty, and true to themselves. It's a HFN, that I hope turns into a HEA.
I hope this is a series that shows more characters in this world. I also hope that we'll get more progression as time goes on of Stellan and Matt, because I absolutely love their love. Even when things got hard, they were both adult enough to realize who they were, what they wanted, and to not settle for less....all while appreciating what they could have within their set of circumstances.
As always, written beautifully, with heart and humor.

After reading and enjoying quite a few of this authors other books (even the one about English football that they infuriatingly insisted on calling it soccer, and also made loads of cultural mistakes in...), this book was unfortunately a huge disappointment.
First off, the blurb is misleading and doesn't match the story. It implies that Stellan is responsible for ending Matt's NHL career because of a photo. Nothing comes of the photo!! Matt's career is completely unaffected. I kept waiting for there to be some actual ramifications, but big fat nothing. It may as well not have happened or been mentioned. Even when they came back to it later in the story, it still didn't make any sense!
Secondly, the MCs were just unlikeable. Stellan was an awful person. His conscience didn't kick in until his job was about to affect a famous person's career... Why did he choose then to feel guilt? The celebrity hockey player is far more likely to brush off a controversy and continue on with their life (you only need to look at the disgusting Carter Hart situation) whereas a 'normal' person is probably going to suffer the fallout a lot more. It didn't make sense to me at all. I just didn't like Stellan. I didn't feel like I knew much more about him by the end of the book. I didn't particularly think he had any character growth either.
Matt was just boring. He had no personality and no interests outside of hockey except for repainting a wall. His character growth was miniscule. I actually liked the last 2-3 chapters, but the rest of the book he was like a hockey android and there was nothing really happening.
It was just a frustrating read because the blurb sounded so promising! I was looking forward to reading THAT story, but it isn't the story we got. I struggled to remain interested, but what really saved this book from being a DNF for me was the side characters. Reid and Naomi had way more chemistry and seemed like actually interesting characters, but I think it says a lot when you don't care about the MC's but you do want to know more about the side characters.

I really enjoyed watching their connection grow. Rather than rushing the romance, the story focuses on Matt's journey of self-discovery as he slowly comes to terms with both his identity and his sexuality. The emotional stakes feel genuine, particularly as he tries to balance the pressures of being a high-profile athlete with his growing feelings for Stellan. In contrast, Stellan is already comfortable with who he is and understands the limitations of what they can realistically have together, making their dynamic feel nuanced and believable.
One of the book's biggest strengths is how thoughtfully it explores the tension between public expectations and private happiness. Rather than offering easy solutions, it acknowledges the difficult realities facing closeted athletes and the compromises that often come with them.
My only real disappointment was the ending. While the "happy for now" conclusion felt realistic for these characters, I was hoping for a little more resolution. This is my third Zarah Detand book, and I must say that her books keep getting better and better! I specifically enjoy her works because she focuses on emotional and romantic connection as much as she does physical connection. Even in this book where their relationship is set up to be purely ‘sex without feelings,’ there are still those other elements brewing in the background. The progression from lust to something more was quiet and natural. Sure, one could argue that it was a bit fast, but Detand does such a great job with the chemistry between the two of them that it just makes sense. (Another reason I love her books is the lack of OM/OW drama, at least out of the three books I’ve read so far!)
Both MCs were super likable, and it was fun to read their interactions. The story itself is very contained; most scenes are the two of them together. I do wish we got to see more of them in the outside world and interact with others. As it goes, they both only have one friend that they’re close with, which felt a little unrealistic.
For me personally, I wish there was also a little bit more drama. Not from the two main characters but from outside forces. Things like Matt’s teammates or Stellan’s old job were briefly mentioned and were kept rather unresolved and open-ended. But that’s just me, and that’s clearly not this book!

Thank you Storm Publishing and Netgalley for this eARC, these opinions are my own. I love a good sports romance! Stellan works a shady job, a lot of it is trying to catch people cheating things like that. So when he’s sent to Chicago he assumes that his mark is a cheater or something. Matt is oddly charming and Stellan feels more for him than he should, but he knows his job. That is until he learns that Matt is a hockey player who’s in the closet. There’s no way Stellan can out him, but his company already has what they need on Matt. When Matt goes for a fitting he’s shocked to find Stellan, the guy who almost ruined his life, working there. It’s an awkward exchange, Stellan apologizes but Matt doesn’t trust him. Still he’s drawn to Stellan the same way he was before. And Stellan already knows about him, so it’s a low risk situation. Maybe Stellan and Matt can hook up, keep it causal. A good way to work out their sexual tension. And Matt doesn’t have to worry about anyone getting hurt that he can’t be out. After all hockey isn’t the most inclusive sport. But the more time they spend together the more it starts to feel like something real. Can Matt trust Stellan? Can Stellan handle a relationship that no one can ever know about? I was super excited to read Zarah Detand’s lastest as I have loved all her other books I’ve read! I enjoyed the relationship between Stellan and Matt, their histories as well as their history with one another! Plus I enjoyed their friends as well! This one is sweet and charming, with a few chuckles, and lots of swooning! Highly recommend for the sports romance lovers!

This was a cute story. I wasn’t sure how these guys were going to be able to come together after their initial meeting, but with a little random chance and chemistry they made it work. This story had what I felt like was a bit of a unique trajectory/resolution compared to some similar books, I won’t say too much about it, but I did enjoy not knowing exactly what was happening next.

I confess, I have eschewed all hockey related fiction up until now, because…. meh.
I stand corrected!! This book is EVERYTHING. Although, hockey doesn’t really play (ha!) a huge part in the story. Yes one of the MC’s is a famous hockey player, but really that’s just a catalyst to explore the multiple ways people ‘hide’. And the author does it so well.
The first meeting with Matt and Stellan was unique and that in itself had me thoroughly invested in the book. Yes the themes throughout are somewhat predictable; but they are handled in a refreshingly new way that I fell in love with both these men and wanted to cuddle them and protect them from the world.
I adored the way the author took these two characters with completely different life experiences, and portrayed the way they both hide - Stellan behind his suited and booted armour, Matt behind his hockey jersey. The moments between them are feet kicking sweet and the third act breakup had me shedding a tear - just the one because I was anticipating my HEA, and the author delivered.
I think what really struck me was the way the author kept it realistic, there was a believable resolution that me had smiling like a loon but also sad to say goodbye to these two adorable characters.
Thoroughly recommend.

Seven months later, Stellan and Matt accidentally meet again. Matt, knowing Stellan has kept his secret all this time uses their connection as a way to discreetly explore his sexuality. Obviously, they both fall completely in love.
I loved this book. I loved how completely lovely and sweet and smitten Stellan and Matt were for each other. I loved how each of them seeing the other in their element made them really see the other man and love them even more. I just felt so sad for them within this book and wanted everything to work out for them.
I also loved the side characters, for the length of the book I felt they were thought out and well developed – I was interested in them.
A short, sharp and shiny book that was very cute and exactly what I needed. The only thing keeping this book five stars was it was probably too short for it to be a complete gut punch.

“You saw the worst of me, and somehow, you’re still here.”
This is my third book from the author and I’m so happy I got to read this one too! Just as always the author is able to make us laugh and smile but also emotional.
This story follows Stellan who will be fired after a scandal with Matt, a NHL hockey player, but somehow they’ll still cross path unexpectedly.
I really loved the Matt and Stellan and how they were made deeply. But also something I really loved is their communication, and how, (99,99% of the time) they always talked and were honest with each other.
This was really a fun, and really sweet romance, with the right amount of spice and emotions.
I also loved how funny the others side characters were, especially Reid and Naomi. These two def are made for each other HAHAHAH. And I also enjoyed seeing how supportive they and brutally honest they were with Matt and Stellan.
This story is kind of fast paced, but also not. (Very well made) It’s really well written, and very smoothly that you enjoy and get attached to every character present.

Honestly, there were certain points in the book where I was worried about the direction of the plot, and whether it would go in a direction that I have zero interest in. But I’m glad to say that Detand on occasion opts for something unexpected, and by the end I’m pleased with where Stellan and Matt end up.
There’s some fallout from the meet cute (though it’s not that cute considering why it happens) that crops up about halfway through the book, and I was dreading seeing that get dragged out for most of the book and having a forced outing of Matt take center stage. Instead, the situation turns into one where both Matt and Stellan seize some bit of control.
The other thing I was expecting, and did indeed happen, was the 3rd act breakup. But it felt earned and true, because Stellan and Matt *are* from two vastly different worlds, and Detand takes pains to show that neither are trying to hurt the other, it’s simply the situation they find themselves in. The eventual HEA is extremely sweet, and does show that Matt has literally and metaphorically let go of some of his own strict rules that he’s instituted about what it takes to be where he is in his career.

I got this book in an honestly random email a couple of days ago, and thought it couldn't be more up my alley. And I was right!! The story follows Matt, a closeted NHL hockey player, and Stellan, a man with a shady past. They didn't meet under the right circumstances, but reconnected a few months later out of the blue.
First of all, we do need more queer stories, as a rule, and this one felt amazing. The love story between the two main characters did not have a "conventional" start, but they managed to find their way. It's not exactly a happily ever after, but more of a happy for now, and it suits them. The characters are in their twenties, and one of them is still very much closeted, so they have obstacles coming, but they make it work. This book was beautifully written, it made me laugh and cry, possibly in equal measure, and I'm definitely not mad about it.

This was a sweet, fun and emotionally charged story! I loved how it started. It was very unique to anything I’ve read before so I was drawn in from chapter 1. (3.5 stars) Zarah Detand is one of my auto read writers as I usually enjoy her romances a lot, and she has a way of making her characters and their relationships feel real.
This one starts with a very disastrous meetup between the 2 MCs - Stellan and Matt - which I thought was a great setup to the story. There's definitely some instant attraction from both sides and after some initial friction after their reconnection they do get together quite quickly, but feelings and emotions take much longer to come.
There is a third act breakup but I didn't mind it so much here, as it gave time for Matt to have some growth. I do wish this book had been a bit longer though, the story felt a bit rushed and although I enjoyed the characters I wanted more time to get to know them better. I did love the parts about Suit Up Wednesdays and the charity work, and although the ending is more of a HFN than a HEA it still left me satisfied.

I loved both books in the Devon Memorial series from Zarah Detand, and I love hockey romance, so I came into this expecting to really enjoy it. Unfortunately, it fell a little flat for me. The main characters didn't quite feel like they had the same chemistry and magic as the characters in Operation Boyfriend and Conflict of Interest, and for the majority of the book it really didn't feel very much like a hockey romance at all. While hockey is never really the focus, you could change it to just about any other sport and the book would not need many changes beyond changing the word "hockey" to the new sport. I look forward to reading more from Zarah Detand in the future, but this one just wasn't really for me.

This was a fun and (I thought) surprisingly lighthearted read, given some of the topics it addresses. I liked the MCs and the supporting characters, and I'm always primed to enjoy books set in Seattle. (Aside, so people can laugh at me: I skimmed the blurb for this so quickly that I thought Matt was the one working in the clothing store—that his life had imploded so much from the outing that he was having to sell suits. So it ended up being a bit of a different setup than I'd expected, heh.) I'm not sure I entirely boaught the insta-attraction, but that was a fairly easy suspension of disbelief. This isn't a book I'm going to read over and over, but it was one I kept wanting to read more of.

Despite the slightly morally questionable start from one of MMCs, both of the main characters are really likeable. Their connection felt real and their communication was great. The spice was hot but also had that realistic feel with Matt being inexperienced and him learning and being vulnerable with Stellan.
Although it was original that there wasn't a huge public coming out for Matt, I would have liked a little more of a HEA rather than a HNF, but that may potentially play out if there are more in this series. Saying that, the ending was very cute and the story overall was thoroughly enjoyable.

As soon as I saw that Zarah Detand was putting out a hockey book it was an immediate request to read. I really enjoy the way she writes and this book was no different.

Sometimes the small quiet moments of love are bigger than the grand gesture and this book is a shining example. Of course, I couldn't help but think of Scott and Kip while reading this and with Matt being a closeted professional athlete there were a lot of similarities in the situation. But this one takes a different route to their HEA that felt right for them. And can we all give a hand to Ronan? I love the idea I him taking on a massive hockey player that he knows could easily crush but still willing to give it all he's got if that guy breaks his brother's heart .

First MM romance and I’m happy to say it did NOT disappoint. 👀
I really loved how realistic this felt. It wasn’t some perfect, too good to be true romance, and the characters actually felt like real people. The ending was also a big plus for me because it wasn’t forced into being some perfect happily ever after. It just felt real.
The book is cute, funny, realistic, and has some good spice. 🌶️👀 Basically, it had everything I needed. Definitely a great first MM romance for me !
Definitely recommend picking this one up!

I absolutely loved this book. It's definitely my favorite by Detand. I have pretty high standards for my hockey romos and this one meets almost all of them. Decent hockey knowledge? Check. Characters that make sense together and don't feel forced? Check. On page spice that is well written? Check. Interesting story that isn't overly trope-y or overdone? Check. Side characters that I want as my own friends? Check. Stellan and Matt worked really well as a couple. Their chemistry is undeniable and they are just really cute together. While I don't love when characters have sob backstories, Stellan's wasn't overdone or too icky. Is the story predictable? Of course it is, it's a gay hockey romo. Matt, the hockey player, is in the closet because...duh, the NHL still doesn't have an active out player. But being predictable isn't always a bad thing and it's certainly not bad for this story. Stellan's unconventional job at the start goes a long way in making the story fresh and interesting. The ending could have been a little better fleshed out but otherwise this was just a really lovely book.

It hurts me to rate this so low, but I really couldn’t get into this. Decided to skim the last 50% because I found the plot nonexistent, the romance felt rushed and I was really not sold about this being a hockey romance. Loved Conflict of Interest but this one fell flat for me, especially when I didn’t care about Stellan’s shady job at all.
