Deep in the Sweet River forest, something ancient is watching...

After my life fell apart, a ranger post in my old hometown sounded like the perfect escape. Quiet trails, familiar woods, and enough distance from my past to finally breathe again.

I don’t expect the thing watching me from the trees.

The locals have always whispered about the Lantern Stalkers—horned creatures with skull faces, swinging lanterns, and a trail of disappearances behind them. It’s all just folklore to me until I see the light in the forest and feel him watching me.

Powerful, possessive, and bound to the forest by a forgotten goddess, Onyx is no campfire story. I know I should run from the monster in my woods. Instead, I follow the pull in my blood and discover that being claimed by a monster feels less like ruin and more like coming home.

But Onyx isn’t the only thing hiding in the woods. There’s another creature out here—something that has decided if I belong to Onyx…

Then I belong to him, too.

Hush is a full-length MM dark monster romance and is part of the Mayhem Manuscripts Cryptids shared world collaboration. Kindly note that the cryptid featured on the cover is not a Wendigo.

Wow... I was not expecting to get so emotional while reading a cryptid monster romance, but as usual, this author really does the best at pulling at the heartstrings and making you feel so connected to the story and its characters. Hush is no different. Onyx and Lucas are soul mates, who could not be more different in species, personality, and overall demeanor, yet their connection and desire for one another really do answer their overarching loneliness, and both are completely enamored with one another, which is the pulsating throughline of this story.

I love the worldbuilding and the overall aesthetic of the woods. It makes for the perfect fall setting and really made me feel so connected to these characters, their world, and the overall tone of the story. The mystery was perfectly executed and kept me invested as the little clues helped me piece together who and what was going on.

Overall, I really enjoyed this story. It had some very strong emotional moments that caught me by surprise and really anchored the story. I couldn't get enough of these two and look forward to anything from this world moving forward.

『•3.5☆•』

I'm so glad this one proved to be a winner when the previous one in this series wasn't for me.

The romance in this is absolutely lovely. The characters really felt like they were made for each other which is exactly how every fated mates story should be.

There's so much I loved about the couple but a couple of things that stick out that really heightened my enjoyment of this was that;

♡Lucas spent some time processing everything, he still had a healthy dose of fear at first towards Onyx's real form.
♡The way Onyx speaks to Lucas.
♡How deeply Onyx feels the wonder and joy every time Lucas shows how he accepts him.

Seriously, the romance is truly amazing. I really do love me some intense emotions and that was done really well towards the end, the result was great and the epilogue felt pretty darn perfect. 🥰

Now, the writing wasn't really for me. There's humor where I would've preferred softness or continued tension/seriousness. And there's way too much flowery prose, i've unfortunately started associating that with AI since I believe that's the wtiting style they learned to copy ( i am not accusing this author of AI, I am saying a lot of books that turned out to be AI had A LOT of flowery prose.) I feel it can be add to the story when it's done in small amounts but if it becomes overused - then it's not something I personally enjoy reading. I think had the author stuck with that writing style only in Onyx's POV it would've made sense for his character since he's an ancient forest creature and sees the world differently and it could've lessened with time just as his communication improved overtime speaking with Lucas and understanding him.

The overabundance of flowery prose made this too wordy and much longer then it needed to be, IMO.

Regardless of my complaints I have no regrets reading this since I do really love Lucas ans Onyx, especially love them together. Lucas's family is also great.💗

》I'm still not sure how I feel about the twist with a certain character..There's also some plot parts that had me scratching my head a little bit I honestly didn't care much about that because i'm here for the romance.🤭
》Excited to see if Jonah one day gets a mate of his own. 🥺

Hush by Avery Collins is part of the multiauthor universe Mayhem Manuscripts Season Two: Cryptids. This was such a good installment to this series. I loved Onyx and Lucas so much. Onyx was just the perfect “gentleman” for Lucas. He knew that Lucas was hurting and he gave him time to adjust to his presence to understand what was happening. I love that he basically courted Lucas over the course of several months.

I was not expecting to be so emotional while reading this book. But the author did such a great job of making me feel for Lucas and Onyx that I had no option but to cry with them. I love the mythology of the Lantern monster, and the way the author used that to build this wonderful world.

I would highly recommend this story. I cannot wait to see what is next in this universe.

I received an ARC from the author for my honest review.

OMG, this book! There are NOT enough stars in the world to rate this one! I went into this expecting a monster romance, but what I got was a beautiful, emotional love story that completely stole my heart. Avery Collins has done it again!

Onyx and Lucas are EVERYTHING. Two lonely souls who were just surviving until they found each other, and watching them fall in love had me smiling, laughing, swooning, and absolutely SOBBING. The way they cared for each other, respected each other, and learned to navigate their differences was so beautiful. And Onyx? This forest guardian is the purest, most devoted sweetheart, and I would protect him with my life!

The world-building was fantastic, and I loved the forest setting, the mystery, and all the little clues that kept me guessing. But that second half? Avery really put me through it. That twist BROKE me, and I was not emotionally prepared!

This had everything I love: humour, possessiveness, swoon-worthy moments, emotional depth, and two characters I was rooting for until the very end. The journey was worth every tear for that HEA.

If Avery keeps writing monster romances, I will keep reading every single one. No questions asked! This is easily one of my favourite reads, and I honestly wish I could give it ALL the stars!

This was not only a 5 star read, but honestly one of my top monster romances of all time. It was 530 pages long and I could have read 500 pages more.

I am absolutely terrible at talking about books that I love this much, so forgive me for how all over the place I am about to sound, but this is going to be in my favorite books of the whole year. A lot of that has to do with Onyx. He is a perfect monster MC. First, while he has a human form, he also has a very monstery form and we love that in this house. Then, the way he thinks and speaks is just the absolute best. He's a centuries old being who is learning everything like he's brand new and I just adore him more than I can explain. The courting, the feuding with appliances, the protecting and loving, every piece of him is just perfection to me.

And Lucas was such a great mate for him (fate did good). He starts out hurting and a little broken and you would think that would make him closed off but he truly blossoms in the forest, which should be his first hint that he is perfect for Onyx. While he does hesitate very briefly, he also very quickly goes all in and for being the smaller human, he is so strong in literally every way. Also, the way they're both so lonely before meeting each other. Like I just love them so much.

The worldbuilding and plot is also just so so good. We have such a good relationship setup, but know that danger is always lurking in the background. And when it hits? Well OW. But I still loved it and I hope Collins writes a million more monster books because I will read every one.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/6.
🌶️🌶️🌶️/5.

I was NOt expecting this story to be so deep and sweet that would make me cry but here we are.
What started as a story similar to others in this series, quickly became something more. A romance so deep, sweet and beautiful between a Cryptid being and a Ranger.

Onyx is the biggest teddy bear! From the moment he scented Lucas in the forest, he was a GONER. He cutelz sta!tked Lucas and made himself known little by little. His way of courting for this monster was to leave a gift carefully wrapped with herbs and such from the forest because it was one of the things he values the most and it was absolutely adorable. When he moved too fast, he apologized by leaving one of those gifts again but this time with a rock inside. I'm telling you, it was adorable and sweet. Who would've thought that this giant monster would be such a sweetheart? Definitely not me but again, here we are.
Onyx is the king of boundaries and consent. I honestly loved everything about him and I was so happy once Lucas accepted what was happening.

Lucas came back to his hometown after being cheated by his fiance with his bff so he needed to disappear for a bit. It just so happens that his small town has been looking for a Ranger and since he is once and has a special connection with the forest, especially the one in his hometown, he couldn't refuse the offer and so he returned back home.
I loved that from the beginning while he didn't believe there was a monster in the forest making people disappear, he wasn't stupid. He knew something was out there, he just didn't know firsthand if it was a bad thing or not and he didn't judge just because he was afraid. He judged after meeting this being and point blank asking if he was the one responsible for the disappearances. I loved that about him.
I loved that when Lucas received his first gift, he knew it was something special without really understanding exactly what the gift was and what it meant to accept it or not.

I loved that besides them being mates, they also had a mind link that Onyx used to communicate with Lucas and I also loved that it wasn't one sided either.
Seeing these 2 together was just wonderful and hopeful because the fact that two completely different beings could find common ground to learn each other and love one another without prejudice was beautiful and gives me hope for humankind for a short time. 🙈

The aftermath of it all was really what broke my resolve and made me cry. Avery pulled all the stops again and made me go through it which at this point feels like her trademark. I definitely had flashes of what I went through with Reign while reading this one. 😅
The plot twist twisted so much that I was not prepared for the accomplice to be who he was. I was in shock to say the least.
This story was also funny too. I loved that Onyx had beef with a refrigerator, a house/cabin, a bed because it ain't rock and moss but especially the fact that he kept score of who was winning Lucas. It was between him and the cabin and while in the beginning Onyx was losing, he ended up winning. 😁

I loved everything about this story and the cherry on top was the very end where the found family aspect came in. Lucas told the truth to his family and the way his family opened their arms to Onyx was beautiful and so endearing. Just thinking about it makes me teary eyed. 🥹

From the books I've read in this series and I read the majority of them, this one is my favorite so far. If you're inclined to read one in this series, I highly recommend this one.

* I read an arc of this book. *

A hauntingly beautiful cryptid romance that will wreck your heart and mend it back together! Avery Collins delivers an absolute masterpiece with Hush, proving that monster romance can be equal parts exquisitely spicy, laugh-out-loud funny, and emotionally devastating. Blending rich folklore with a deeply tender soulmate connection, this book transforms an eerie local forest legend into a breathtaking sanctuary of healing, belonging, and unconditional devotion.

Seeking quiet isolation to mend his broken life, Lucas returns to his childhood hometown to take a post as a forest ranger in the Sweet River woods. He grew up hearing the terrifying local superstitions about the Lantern Stalkers, horned, skull-faced creatures swinging blue lights in the dark. But when Lucas actually meets Onyx, the ancient cryptid bound to the forest, he doesn't find a bloodthirsty nightmare; he finds a deeply lonely, possessive guardian who sees straight into Lucas's soul. As Lucas embraces the wild call of the woods, he discovers that giving his heart to a monster feels like finding his true home, even as a shadowy secondary threat emerges from the forest, determined to claim what belongs to Onyx. onyx was an absolute consent and boundary king! Despite his massive, formidable presence and ancient powers, Onyx is the ultimate green-flag cryptid! He respects Lucas's boundaries with profound care, ensuring every step of their intimacy is grounded in total safety, mutual respect, and absolute reverence.

The emotional core of this story is utterly exquisite. Watching two isolated souls, a heartbroken human ranger and a forgotten forest guardian, learn each other's languages, navigate grief, and build a safe haven together brings a level of raw, tear-jerking sweetness that lingers long after reading. Collins crafts an extraordinarily creative, nature-rooted mythology surrounding the Lantern Stalkers. Beyond the rich world-building, the dialogue is top-tier comedy, from Onyx learning the art of dry sarcasm and developing a hilarious rivalry with modern appliances (like the kitchen fridge) to his possessive confusion over Lucas's questionable fashion choices. The physical intimacy in Hush is written in stunning, poetic prose that is both scorching hot and deeply meaningful.

Prepare to clutch your Kindle in the final chapters, though, a heart breaking plot twist delivers an emotional rollercoaster before giving us a triumphant, immensely satisfying conclusion. The sheer beauty of the prose, the creative monster biology, and the unyielding devotion between Lucas and Onyx make every single tear completely worth it. Hush left me utterly enchanted, weeping happy tears, and completely head-over-heels for Lucas and his horned guardian. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves monster romance rich in lore, tender consent, hilarious bantering cryptids, and a soul-stirring love story that proves the scariest woods can hold the safest arms.

Mate touches. Mate stays. Mate chooses.

I was absolutely not prepared for the emotional warfare that would be contains within these page. Yes I should know better because Avery wrote it.

Onyx is loneliness and hope wrapped around fear of rejection. Lucas is broken hearted and trying to find his new normal. He has no idea how not normal it will be.

I loved this book so much. The characters, the setting, the story and all the emotions blend into such a beautiful story. Don't get me wrong I definitely spent time bawling and wanting to throw my Kindle but it is absolutely worth every moment.

I love how Onyx is so careful with Lucas. He is so much bigger in his true firm but after he accidentally scares him he is even more careful until Lucas demands something. I adored that he called Lucas Little Ember and used his freckles as a reference point.

This story has such an amazing bi-awakening with the fated mate bond. I love the mind link and that in never stops Onyx trying to learn and talk.

I will say I was getting way to comfortable and did not see the danger coming. The beginning was focused on building the relationship between Lucas and Onyx.

I loved how the scents, bond and even the forest itself were so significant to the entire story. Plus add in the urban legend aspects and even the creation if Onyx and the others like him.

Grab a drink, a snack, and some tissues because this one shows you the light and drags you in with no intention if letting you go.

I love everything that Avery writes but this book...oh my god, it has shot straight to the top of my favourites. It had an amazing plot, banter, obsessive and possessive behaviours, spicy and two characters that you genuinely care about and want to see succeed.

For an ancient being, Onyx had me in a chokehold, his loneliness and desire for Lucas was off the chart, I absolutely loved this cryptid and how far he goes for the man he loves. The way Avery wrote him, gave him so much depth that he was more than just a 'monster'. He was so incredibly human at times with his emotions and his way of communicating with Lucas brought tears to my eyes.

Lucas was just a sweetheart, wanting to escape another life where he was cheated on and taking up the ranger job in his old town. He never once expected to meet Onyx but damn once he did and got over his shock, he was all in.

The way this book built up it's plot was phenomenal and I found myself on the edge of my seat throughout. The last half had me reaching for hankies and some ugly sobbing which I didn't expect whatsoever but it was worth it.

This was a different type of book for Avery and damn, I really don't want it to end as it was amazing.

I say this every time and probably will continue but this has got to be my top reads from Avery. It literally had everything! A great story build, humor, swoon material, possessiveness, two characters you root for to the very end.

Luca and Onyx have my whole freaking heart! The way loneliness is describe in this for both of them brought tears in my eyes. They truly were just surviving till they found each other. Just two big ole sweethearts falling in love.

And the story build was fantastic from the beginning to end, and I was bawling my little eyes out the last half of the book, and that twist broke my fucking heart!!!!

I hope Avery continues to write monster romance because I will devour each and every one of them!!

Lucas and Onyx were absolutely amazing together. I felt so many emotions while reading this story, and I honestly wasn't expecting the tears, but they definitely came! There were so many laughs, moments of worry and sadness, spice, joy, and so much happiness.

Hush was a beautifully written and emotional monster romance. Onyx and Lucas are soul mates and both have baggage. But the way they slowly learn each other and become one is lovely.

This story is part of Mayhem Manuscripts Season 2 Cryptids collection. These stories are all stand alones so they don't have to be read in order you can enjoy each story however you want 🖤 Now these are also Dark Romances so check the CWs before heading in. This one wasn't overly dark but it's still good to just take a peek before jumping in.

Ok I don't know how I will be able to describe how Amazing this book was but I'll give ya some bare bones here so nothing is spoiled.
Lucas has come home to Sweet Rivers after a nasty break up. He thought he was just returning to his old roots and becoming the Park Ranger but it's way more than that. He is walking into a mystery of missing people and tales of a forest beast. Little does he know those "tales" might not be so out there....which Lucas learns quickly after he meets said forest beast...Onyx...and he finds out that he is actually the one that will end poor Onyx's life of loneliness if he agrees to be his mate 😳 Obviously Lucas has questions and top of the list being "are you the one taking people" and when Onyx confirms he isn't that opens a whole new can of worms because if it isn't Onyx then who is it?
This is an EXTREME over simplification of what is happening here 🤣 but again SPOILER FREE so don't yell at me when you get in and it's all twisty turney! The sheer emotional push and pull here along with Onyx learning Lucas was everything! Onyx is just this sassy cinnamon roll death-deer forest guardian who just wants his mate and my gosh did my heart just bleed this whole story for him 🥹 I am absolutely obsessed!! This book is a top read of the year for me hands down. It has everything mystery, feels (oh the feels), spice and that ending! I couldn't have asked for more it was perfect! I honestly could go on and on about this book but you really have to experience it for yourself! 🖤🖤

I had the opportunity to beta read and arc read this one. I didn’t plan to get this emotionally invested in a monster romance, but here we are. This is exactly why Avery Collins is one of my favorite authors. Her way with words is absolutely incredible, and I swear I have half the book highlighted by the time I finish reading. She really knows how to hit you in the feels with her writing. Let’s get into it.
Lucas returns to his hometown with a broken heart having taken a job as a local ranger. Everyone knows the stories about the lantern stalkers and the warning not to follow the blue lights into the woods. But Lucas soon discovers that the “monster” everyone fears isn’t quite what they believe… and something else is lurking in the woods.
One of things that immediately grabbed my interest was the lore behind Onyx. I loved how creatively Avery built his character and rooted his existence so deeply in nature. His loneliness seeped from the pages and my heart ached for him. Lucas and Onyx are absolutely perfect for each other, and their connection was everything. Their banter was raw, sincere, and downright hilarious at times. Onyx was so literal in his reactions to Lucas and I loved that. Onyx learning sarcasm? FOREVER one of my favorite things.
The spice was top tier. Not only were there new discoveries (ehm the opening), but these two had a connection like no other. The long, deliciously spicy scenes are written with such beautiful language that I found myself highlighting passages for reasons beyond the obvious. However, underneath all that heat is a story filled with loneliness, tenderness, acceptance, and a love that reaches straight into your heart.
Lucas sees Onyx for who he truly is, and watching him give this lonely cryptid the love and acceptance he deserves absolutely wrecked me in the best way. There were twists and turns that had me hooked and needing to know what would happen next.
This is one of the most heartfelt, beautifully written monster romances I’ve ever read. It was emotional, funny, spicy and emotionally devastating. Onyx and Lucas have my whole heart.

Omg awesome! Just read it!!

This book is freakin' everything! I fell in love w/ Lucas and Onyx from the get go, and their interactions just kept getting better the longer they knew each other. Onyx is such a sweet monster, but w/ the dryest since of humour I've read in a long time. He and Lucas had me in stitches repeatedly, and I adored it!

Lucas is his own brand of entertaining, and the way he teases and banters w/ Onyx (the 7ft tall monster from local legend who walks around w/ antlers and a skull for a face) is epic. He takes nothing lying down, and isn't afraid to set boundaries. And the wonderful thing is that the magical forest guardian respects those boundaries even though he could easily barrel right through them. Seriously, what is not to love about these two??

However, the author also utterly crushed my soul in the second half of the book, and I am so not ok. It is eventually fixed, but the hurt is still there. 😭😂😅To say I loved this book is not enough. It diminishes how completely wonderful every part of reading this novel was to me, but human words are very limiting. I'm sure Onyx would agree.

Oh! I also want to mention how beautifully written the story is. Some of the things Onyx says are so powerful and insightful. You just need to read it for yourself and experience the book personally.

As for spice and angst and such, this book is hot as sin! It isn't very angsty, although there are very emotional parts to it. I don't feel that that is the same thing, though. And check your TWs/CWs. The list is very long, but it's long for a reason.

Overall, just read it. Give it the chance it is due because it's simply that good.

✨May contain spoilers✨

Gosh, I loved this book so much. I have read almost every single one of Avery’s books and I think that’s Hush might be my new favorite. I knew it was going to be epic just because it’s Avery but wow, I just wasn’t expecting it to be this phenomenal.

Onyx and Lucas had my heart from the moment I started the book all the way to the end. If I wasn’t laughing, I was either laughing or tearing up just by how emotional this story was.

Man, those last chapters in the book made me feel so many different feelings. When there is drama, you better be prepared for the utter turmoil to how it’s literally going to make you clutch your kindle in this lovely gem.

This book was full of so much emotion that you just don’t know what to expect. I absolutely loved all the sarcastic banter, the laughable moments and just a book with such hilarious jealousy that it didn’t make sense. I loved their bond because these two were so perfect.

If you’ve been wanting to get into Avery’s books, this is the perfect way to get started.

I received a copy of this book and this is my honest review.

So, I went into this not knowing what to expect out of this author. Never read any of her books

Now, I am excited to tell you about it because this is now my top read of the year for me

The world building with everything that she wrote in here was spot on.
Explanations of the characters, definitions of the certain words for the book were so nicely done. I loved it. It was not overly done. It was just perfect

I felt the chemistry, the bond, I felt EVERYTHING. I can say with the utmost certainty I would highly recommend this book for people who love MM romance books with monster/human elements in it.
With lots of laughter and definitely a little sadness. It was so well written i could talk about how much I really like all-day long.
Onyx and Lucas are my new monster/human book couple of this year.

When this is released I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
ALWAYS TAKE CARE OF YOUR MENTAL HEALTH and read your trigger warnings. There are some scenes in here that might not be for you.
For those of you that love it all .. Enjoy 😉.

Hush is book seven of the Mayhem Manuscripts Season Two: Cryptids Series.

I adored Onyx and Lucas together. Lucas took a bit for him to grow on me. I get his hesitance to engage in anything within the forest, as that is some scary stuff. But some of his actions ended up hurting Onyx and we can't have Onyx with a broken heart. Through their struggles together, you see Lucas become more accepting and loving towards Onyx. However, Onyx has his own demons he needs to face and this causes some pain for Lucas. They both make their own mistakes which unintentionally hurt the other, but I loved seeing them come back together.

By the time you finish this story, actually even before you finish it, you will see how deep the love is that Onyx has for Lucas. There is no doubt that he would give up everything he had for the happiness of Lucas. I loved every moment of this story and was upset when the story finished as I wanted more of Onyx and Lucas.

Oh. My. God.

When I started this book I had no idea how much of an impact it would be. Seriously, I was so intrigued and didn’t know where it was going and then I was laughing, kicking my feet, giggling, screaming, crying and throwing up (not literally but you get it)

Lucas and Onyx. Oh I loved them. I loved them so much. You have Lucas who comes back home after a bad break up and starts working as a forest ranger and Onyx who is a mysterious forest monster who has so many layers once you start peeling. Lucas also has some baggage he has to deal with so you get character development and yearning and emotions (SO MANY EMOTIONS) all wrapped up into this story that grips you and won’t let you go til your done.

It’s such a roller coaster but it’s so worth it!

This was my first Avery Collins book and trust and believe it’s not my last!

Thank you for the ARC!

Every single book in this season 2 of the cryptid series has been literary gold. I absolutely loved this book the story of Onyx and Lucas was just so beautiful and perfection. Lucas has returned to his childhood home to the woods he loved and still loves. In those woods lurks something that is in a way calling to Lucas. This something is a very large cryptid named Onyx who watches Lucas with such intensity that I makes me blush. Onyx was precious and I absolutely love him to death I actually would marry that cryptid. Avery did an excellent job telling the story of Onyx and Lucas and I have never felt more or had my heart broken more for a cryptid in my life. This was such a great story and I cannot say enough about it I will reread this again because Onyx is just that adorable.

This book was absolutely flawless. Lucas was such a strong character who had been broken by a cheating ex and yet he was never weak. Onyx is sweet while also being fiercely protective. I really loved the way these two met and the inclusion of rocks in courtship. It felt very penguin in nature and I loved that. I don't want to spoil anything so I will say the big scene had my heart breaking for Lucas and in some small way Parker as well. Not only are the MCs super interesting but even the side characters are interesting. I definitely hope we get a side story for Jonah. Ultimately this book was a wild ride with a beautiful relationship and a lot of action (of both kinds😉)

Completely blown away! Absolutely devoured this one (and had my emotions on a trip). Lucas came back home after his fiancé cheated on him. He went back to his comfort place- the forest.
Onyx is the protector of the forest- what he was created for and stumbles upon Lucas and feels the bond snap into place.
The way they both had to learn each other, the boundaries that needed to be in place and working together was written so beautifully. Felt like I was right there (all in my emotions too). Oh and how Onyx had me laughing about household appliances lol.

Hello I’m finally back from my emotional devastation cave to report back about finishing hush. First of all Avery how DARE you make me sob through the last half of a book. My heart is both broken and healed in different increments.

This book was incredible, I honestly was so obsessed. I love Onyx and Lucas so much!! Their nicknames for each other made me kick my feeties while reading. I loved watching them love each other as well as being there for each other while they heal ❤️

This book hands down is one of my favorite monster romances of the year. It had learning each other, consent, taking your time to figure out your feelings, and emotions omg so many emotions.

If you are going to read a book from this monster mash up it HAS to be this one. If your love languages are general harassment of a partner and you too also trash talk kitchen appliances you will relate to this book for sure 😋

These two were cute from the beginning. Onyx’s feelings about Lucas’ den, the smug refrigerator and job were hilarious. I liked their dynamic and the fact that Lucas never backed down when it came to expressing what he wanted and needed when dealing with Onyx. They both learned one another and created a relationship that worked for them. I enjoyed this!
