Traversing the Veil: The World Beyond My Eyes

Rate this book
“Traversing the Veil: The World Beyond My Eyes” is a collection of poetry on various topics, but all of them pushing the envelope of what the poet sees in the world around her. Her hope is that this collection will touch and inspire the reader to look beyond their fleshly eyes and see into the metaphysical; to search their own feelings and look inward for wholeness and driving passion for life.

She loves to bring vivid imagery, life-like characteristics to nature, and a warm, subdued appeal to the worlds she creates on paper. Her poetic topics often have a mystical feel to them, but contain eclectic topics (human condition, macabre, nature, love).

NOTE: I am no longer writing under my pen name Dara Reidyr. See my website for details.

My first poem was penned in the year 2012 in the midst of writing a memoir. The poem was spontaneous, taking me quite by surprise, and yet I knew I was on to something beyond my control. My imagination had been ignited. A spark had been hiding within, waiting to be unleashed at that precise moment in time. From that point on I was hooked and poetry was my drug of choice. I chose a pen name, Dara Reidyr, since at that time I wanted to keep my professional and creative lives separate. Then I began writing poems, like wildfire.

I grew up Kara Danielle Rogers (now married as Kara Spain), in a small southern town in South Carolina. I grew up with a Romantic imagination, full of creativity and sensitivity. My brother and I spent our summer days, out of doors playing and imagining we were detectives off on some grand case that needed to be solved. He and I are still very close to this day. Now, I live in North Carolina with my wonderful husband of ten years, our two cats, enjoying warm tea and philosophical discussions.

I've been published by several publishers including: Red Fez, The Lightkeeper, Journey of the Heart (Women's Spiritual Poetry), The Tattooed Buddha, and Felan. I am also self-published and share my work with my fellow poets on my blog, Creations in Poetry & Words.

My in-depth knowledge of poetry is fairly slim. I sat through the undergraduate courses in college and learned some of the basics. I read the classics (I know Wordsworth from Hardy.) but there was always something that held me back. In fact, I really didn't know "how" to write a poem. I tried.
To me, poetry is essentially a distillation of emotions, visits and images. I envy those who can convey complex emotions to a few words and a few stanzas. I love Yeats, Byron and the contemporary poetry of Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen. But, a true appreciation of poetry in general has eluded me.
Then I come upon the works of Dara Reidyr. After reading a few on her poems on her blog site, I was hooked. Here was a woman who spoke to me in a language I totally understood. She has the heart and soul of a true poet. This slender volume, "Traversing the Veil" is a collection of 60 short poems that are full of images that are at once dark, seductive, sensual, naturalistic and mystic. The works range from the whimsical "Afternoon Coffee" to a lamentation, "A Trip Through Oblivion" which is dedicated to her father, now deceased.
Reidyr's tight concise style reminds me of such poets as Rainer Maria Rilke. She uses all the senses to convey her innermost thoughts and dreams.
Dara Reidyr is an artist who uses words to paint images that stay with you.
I'm hoping she will publish another volume soon.

Vivid poetry, moving thoughts and insight. Great topics like nature, love, fantasy. Great to keep around for coffee table or just on hand to read when the mood strikes. Look forward to more.
