Business As Usual

"How far would you go, sacrificing your love and happiness, just to honour a commitment?
How far would you go, continuously punishing yourself, just free yourself of guilt?
How far would you go, constantly lying to yourself, just so you can achieve dreams that aren't even yours?
With BUSINESS AS USUAL, Deepak Chawla brings together stories about such individuals, whose convictions are bigger than their situations.
Set in the urban milieu of the modern corporate world, these stories are about people who are often at crossroads making choices between values, beliefs, obligations, and convictions. But who, like most of us, ultimately deal with life with supreme tenacity, strength and courage. Because in the end, it will be BUSINESS AS USUAL."

Book from a different genre than what the most Indian authors have been writing since the advent of Chetan Bhagat. Setting of this book is in corporate world but presents the individual's struggle with being a professional. Also presents the view of women without them being involved in love or has no unnecessary romance while lightly touching the fact that relationships between men and women cannot be objective even if they are not romatically/physically involved, there is subjectiveness in every relationship, I think this is the uniqueness of this book.

First book I have read with Indian Corporate world as the background with a fine balance between the business setting and the individuals.

Could relate to most stories. First story was little close to my background - infra business, MBA, Indian School of Business, project bidding etc but then the remaining stories explored different areas. Felt genuine and cooked up / hyped up stories

Except the last story, all others had no all happy ending, which is the truth of most modern day careers. There is no pressure to create magic/miracle in every situation. It is not what you have achieved but how you threaded the journey and what you have become at the end that matters the most

Very well interspersed professional values - importance of etiquette, time, patience, thoroughness etc. Many of them, I thought, author values very highly

Was a little difficult read due to the movement between present and past and at times a little confusing especially the first story.

Congratulations and looking for a new set of stories

Great collection of short stories by Deepak. These stories are set up in and around the work culture which everyone of us is a part off. The stories knits well various characters but more prominently it focuses on crucial human relationship which is beyond love, where people not being husband wife shares and trusts more than they share /trust with their spouses. This brings back to me loads of good old memories that I preserve. One may not realize that how important the other person is in his/her life, that how used to one is talking/sharing/discussing things with or rather trusting the other but ultimately life proves that this is 'Business as Usual' for everyone.

Only one negative, the writing style in all the stories becomes very predictive and similar.

Looking forward for more work from Deepak.

This book is a very good collection of short stories. The best thing that I liked about the book was that none of the stories has love plot in it. There are men and women sharing good chemistry, good working equation with each other and just real good friends. And this is such a normal thing that happens in the world out there.

The stories are new and fresh. I don’t consider them stories, I don’t even consider them leanings or anything like that but a “matter of fact”. What author tells you is this happened and this is how it happened. No preaching, no moral high grounds, not the usual boring stories.

I’ve lost counts of the books I have with as similar theme. My job requires I keep abreast with current thinking and I'm always on the lookout for a different take. Business As Usual works for me because its message is deliver in a way that makes it easy to relate to and succinctly highlights the challenges many of us face in our working lives. I hadn't come across the author Deepak Chawla before but he has one of the most authentic voices I have come across.

Business as usual is a collection of 5 short stories written by Deepak Chawla. These Handpicked stories are a mixture of relationships, ambition, desire and corporate life.

The heady mix of success, failure and drama makes these stories an essential cocktail of emotions. Mature writing and thoughts penned down by author makes the book more interesting. Being from a corporate world I could relate to few stories and characters.

The simple people who inhabit author’s stories evoke sympathy and happiness in equal measures. My favourite being, “Choices and Conviction” and More wishes than stars” from this collection.

All stories are written in a simple language and yet they hold such power that can just move the reader. If you like to read short stories, this book is a good choice. You'll enjoy it for sure.
