Grace Millstein has a very privileged life on the East Coast. Her mother runs PredX, a medical research company using the latest technology to cure diseases, and her father is a romance novelist. Along with her little sister, Ladybug, she attends the exclusive Chapman School, and her birthday party is held on her mother's yacht, with her present being a limited edition Martin CEO-11 guitar. Her best friends Lu and Gemma also buy into this lifestyle, although since Gemma's father has lost his job, times are hard for her. This all comes crashing down when it turns out that Grace's mother, Jade Wren, has been faking the research and taking money from investors, including many parents at the school. She's arrested, and the FBI come to the home at 5 a.m., march her off in handcuffs, and take all of the family's technology, including Grace's phone! It's just as well that she doesn't have the device, because everyone is very mean on social media, even though Grace and her father had no idea. He moves the family into his mother's apartment while Jade goes to live with her sister, awaiting trial for wire fraud. Grace has to attend the local middle school, and the administration even lets her register as "Summer Stone" so that people don't connect her to her former self. She has cut and dyed her hair, so she no longer resembles her mother. Gram is a comforting presence, and there's a steady stream of baked goods. Grace finds a stray dog, Donut, who gets along with Gram's cat, Boo. She meets a boy who used to live in her neighborhood, Max, as well as other kids at school who play the guitar. When she and Max write and perform a song, a classmate records it and posts it on YouTube. It gets a lot of hits, but causes some problems. Grace's real identity is found out, and an important secret about Max is revealed. It also leads to the producer of the television show Melody Masters calling Grace and asking her to audition. Will she be able to make peace with her new life, and help Max out of a predicament?
Strengths: I suppose there are middle grade students out their who live in mansions, have Dior handbags, and buy cosmetics at Sephora, but I don't know any of them! The high flying lifestyle is interesting, and the mother's deception devastating. The father has a good attitude, and moving in with the grandmother is quite a change, but the family tries to do the best they can. Grace is understandably angry at her mother, who doesn't seem the least bit bothered about the devastation she has caused. There are not too many books about parents in trouble with the law, but this situation does arise. When I was 11, one of my friend's father's was convicted of tax evasion, and I remember sitting on my front porch with her while her house was being searched! Grace's guitar (the love of which she picked up from her late grandfather) gives her an outlet for processing her emotions, and helps her bounce back. I always appreciate well developed grandparent characters in books now, and did love Gram.
Weaknesses: The unexpected twist in this made it a fantasy book. I was really not expecting this, and it made the book feel a bit unfocused to me. The real appeal of this story is the mother's crime and Grace's changed living situation, and the twist was confusing.
What I really think: This reminded me of Sheinmel's 2011 All The Things You Are, which my daughter loved. It's a good choice for seventh graders, who suddenly want a very specific kind of sad novel in February, usually involving abusive parents or horrible living situations. My daughter always said that reading these books always made her own life seem better. N.B. The request for sad books almost never include storylines where parents/siblings/friends have died and children are processing grief.

September 11, 2026I enjoyed reading this book, Almost True by Elly Swartz! A very different topic. Sixth grader Grace, lives a life of having the best of everything along with the two best friends in the world, Lu and Gemma. It's going great until people find out Grace's mom, Jade, is a fraud and scammed people out of lots of money.
grace is so embaressed by everything that is happening around here and to here family. Grace, her younger sister Ladybug, and her dad move in with her grandmother. It's a tight fit but Grace is happy to be at a different school and not have to deal with the stares from people, until they find out who she really is.
Typical books for tweens that I have read, don't have the main character's parent being the one who commits fraud. I can see this book being used in classroom read alouds with great discussions of knowing right from wrong, do the outcomes justify the means to get there, etc.
A must-have book for all libraries, especially if you already have other Elly Swartz books.

From the author of feel good, thought-provoking middle grade novels including Same Page, Hidden Truths and the amazing Dear Student, comes a sad-happy heart warmer with 12 year old Grace forced to deal with the after effects of her mom’s criminal acts.
Grace’s family has always been just right-parents who are supportive and loving towards both her and younger sister Lady Bug, enough money to live in a big house and afford things like private school and a big boat with a private captain to drive it for them, and two best friends who have been with her through thick and thin for the last two years. But then her mother is arrested for fraudulently representing her supposed technological breakthrough in the medical community and pursuing funding from friends and parents of her classmates. The result is parents who are living apart, leaving the school she loves and moving across town to live with her Gram, Dad and sister, being ghosted by her besties and virtually everyone she knows, and her music not flowing anymore.
Swartz blends a realistic and touching story about recovery, family with a bit of ghostly friendship along with the human kind in her usual skillful way. Readers’ heart will hurt for Grace as she faces the fact that her mother lied to so many people, must deal with the fall out, and decide if she can forgive her or will keep her shut out of her life. Well-developed main character with a delightful younger sister and a wonderful father and grandmother. Plenty of opportunity for lit circle discussion about character changes over time, establishing mood, and plenty of “what would you do” debate.
Recommended for those in grades 5-7 who enjoy magical realism.
Thanks for the eARC, Edelweiss and Delacorte Press/Penguin Random House.

An excellent quick read from Eloy Swartz. “Almost True” hits all the right notes in this book about identity and forgiveness.

Elly Swartz has done it again. Almost True is another masterpiece that will capture readers' hearts long after they turn the final page.
Grace Millstein is a protagonist you'll find yourself cheering for from the very first chapter. When the life she's always known shatters overnight, Grace must navigate heartbreak, uncertainty, and difficult truths about family, friendship, and community. Through it all, she discovers that strength isn't about having all the answers. It's about finding the courage to keep moving forward, even when everything feels impossible.
Swartz beautifully explores what happens when the people we trust make mistakes and reminds readers that our circumstances do not define who we become. Grace's journey is one of resilience, forgiveness, and self-discovery, made even more touching through her love of music and the unexpected friendships she forms along the way.
Without giving anything away, the story builds to a surprising twist that is both satisfying and deeply emotional. As always, Swartz treats complex topics with honesty, compassion, and hope, creating characters that feel authentic and relatable.
We all have a little Grace in us. We've all faced moments when life doesn't go as planned, when we've questioned who we are or where we belong. Almost True reminds readers that even when life feels broken, healing, hope, and new beginnings are possible. This is a story that will resonate with middle grade readers and adults alike, and another unforgettable novel from one of today's finest middle grade authors.

Thank you to the author for providing an early copy to read and review. This middle grade story follows 6th grader Grace as she is forced to navigate a new path upon learning that her inventor mom is a fraud. Grace’s journey forward is one of courage, self-discovery, and friendship with an unexpected twist!
As a 4th grade ELA teacher, I enjoyed the nod to two other kidlit works (Wish in a Tree and The Eyes and the Impossible).
Publishing January 2027.
Lines I enjoyed:
ARC page 24:
“You can’t control what other people think or if you’ll make it onto the show. Just like when I play a gig, I can’t control if the crowd will love or hate my set. The only thing we can control is the effort we give, the heart we share, and the music we play. So do that and don’t worry about the rest.”
-Mr. Murphy
ARC page 58:
My music is the only thing that stops my world and heart and brain from spinning. It’s my compass. That’s what Gramps always said. “It’ll steer you and steady you, Gracie. You’ll never lose your way as long as the music is in you.”
ARC page 78:
I look at my grandmother and wonder if all losses feel the same. Like a gaping hole in your heart that can never be filled.
ARC page 111:
He stares at the house. “It’s surprising what you miss when you leave a place.”
-Max
ARC page 211:
“Gracie, I don’t want to hold onto this anger forever. It’s painful and exhausting. I want to move forward with joy and love…there is no one way to heal. The path forward can look a lot of different ways.”
-Dad

I knew from the first pages this one was going to be my new favorite book by Elly Swartz.
Almost True by Elly Swartz is a middle grade novel that blends heart, emotional depth, and a touch of mystery into an unforgettable story. Grace Millstein is a twelve-year-old whose seemingly perfect world is turned upside down when she learns a shocking truth about her mother.
Swartz really understands the emotional landscape of middle grade readers. Grace’s voice feels authentic—vulnerable, resilient, and quietly strong—as she navigates a new neighborhood, shifting friendships, and the ripple effects of her mother’s choices on her entire family.
This is a story about losing your footing when everything you thought you knew falls apart. It’s about how mistakes—sometimes very big ones—don’t just impact one person, but everyone around them, stirring up anger, confusion, and hurt. And yet, through all of that, there’s space for growth, understanding, and ultimately, forgiveness.
A heartfelt and honest read that stays with you. Swartz’s best middle grade novel yet.

Another great book by Elly Swartz! Grace’s life is totally changed when she finds out her mom lied about her business and took threat wasn’t hers. Mom goes to jail, they have to sell their house, and move in with Gram. On top of that Grace’s friends stop talking to her and she has to leave her school. Grace brings her guitar to Gram’s and hopes to send in an audition video for Melody Masters. At her new school she meets Max (or does she) and meets Dakota who invites her to the school dance to hear her club band play. At her new school Grace finds her footing and decides who she really wants to be. Will Grace send in an audition video? Will she be able to forgive her mom?
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the eARC of this book. All opinions are my own.

Themes of family, betrayal, friendship, music, going viral on the internet, identity, and honor are addressed. This is a MUST READ! Add it to your to-be-read-list today!!!

I really enjoyed Almost True. Grace’s journey as she tries to rebuild her life after discovering that her mother isn’t who she thought she was kept me turning the pages. I especially liked the mix of family drama, friendship, and mystery. No more nice house no Mom, and even the friends disappear. Navigating all these changes is hard, so hard.
