I have mixed feelings, so bear with me.

Not My Hero by Michelle Bolanger is a touching retelling of the biblical account of Ruth, and it was such fun finding the parallels. Donovan's heart to help people and carry on his parents' legacy was admirable, and Kennedy's tenacity despite all the wrenches life through at her kept me reading. I loved Kennedy and Cora's relationship, as well as that between Donovan and Matt and his wife. So much sass! And Lady Tabitha was another compelling character--I was surprised by how much she grew on me, and I would love to read a book about her!

The faith content was consistently there, between Cora and Donovan and his friends, but it also felt very much like an unequally yoked situation as Donovan and Kennedy's relationship developed. Which, yes, reflects Ruth, because she was a Moabite woman. But she also, from the beginning of the book, pledged her loyalty to everything Naomi believed, even her God. When Kennedy did eventually come to faith--*I think*--it was so brief and barely touched on, which didn't feel like it honored the character. I also was rather disappointed that Donovan never really tried to work on his cussing issue, even though it was discussed multiple times how he needed to stop. (BUT the swearing is never explicit; just "he swore" or "he cursed.")

I did really enjoy reading the messages about greed, generosity, and trusting God as they played out over the course of the story. The plot was full of surprising twists and turns--hence why I read it in only three days, I suppose. The way Donovan took care of Kennedy... so sweet. She had so much to overcome due to her first husband's treachery and deceit, and Donovan provided for her and Cora just as Boaz did for Ruth. It bothered me that Donovan's past was never openly discussed with Kennedy though.

There is some focus on human trafficking, so due to those heavier elements and other content, I would recommend this book for ages 16, maybe even 18+.

Additional content warnings: 1 a-word, and one cut-off a-word. 2 d-words. In the prologue, Donovan is arrested for using prostitutes and discovers his mother was a prostitute (just as Rahab was Boaz's mother); his father is disappointed in him for seeking s*x that way and being part of the human trafficking issue. After an incident that leaves Kennedy battered, Donovan takes her to his home and bathes her (described as "not sensual"); she later goes to his bed to feel safe and they wind up curled up together and kissing; tongue kissing at one point. Photos are taken that make people appear to be in sensual poses.

I was impressed with the depth and suspense of this story. It is heavily focused on the story of Ruth from the Bible and the main characters are living out a modern version of this story. Kennedy was married to a man that lied about everything to her and when he died, all of his bad decisions fell on Kennedy's shoulders. She was essentially held responsible for his crimes, even though she wasn't formally charged. Her mother-in-low, Cora, befell the exact same situation as her husband was also involved in the same issues.

After having their entire lives torn apart, they are returning to Cora's hometown with what little they have left to see if they can find her remaining extended family. But another terrible accident happens to them and Kennedy almost loses her life. But is rescued by a man that will forever hold her heart. Donovan is Cora's late husband's nephew, but none of the parties realize this for quite a while.

Donovan has his own sordid history and complicated present with being one of the trustees of their families inheritance, which also involves Kennedy and Cora. These are all the intricate webs that tie the characters together, but also create such fine points of contention. There is a lot to unravel in this one and my heart was in palpitations for most of the story. It was stressful, sad, and heartbreaking through many of the interactions.

I felt terribly for the way Kennedy's life seemed to keep crumbling right in front of her eyes. But the continued support and love from Cora and Donovan, kept her as balanced as they could. While this story is filled with tragedy, it also has a very strong reminder of hope and trusting in God. Many of the characters have faith that runs deeply and they continuously try to remind Kennedy to trust in Him and let Him guide her to where she is meant to be. But she struggles with this immensely, as her trust in everyone is constantly challenged.

This is one of those books that will prompt you to listen a little closer to the messages He sends us everyday and remember that we are not in control of the things that happen to us, but we are in control of how we react to it.

I love a good book, and this one was great! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one! It’s like the story of Ruth and Naomi from the Bible but with some super modern-day twists. It’s also a story of redemption and second chances.

Just so you know before getting into it, you’ll encounter fraud, thieving, gambling, prostitution, etc. There are a lot of hard topics within this novel. The main male character also often says curse words, but they don’t share the actual words, just “he cursed”.

Reading the novel, there were a few times when I had the thought that this was not the normal Christian fiction novel. And it’s not. Don’t go into this novel expecting it to be a super clean and lovely Christian fiction novel. That said, it’s also not a modern spicy novel either. God is fully within the pages of this novel, but in a different way than I expected.

Saying all of this, I still give it a five-star rating, and I did really enjoy the novel and the characters.
Kennedy has to come back to God. She’s had some hard things thrown at her through life. Her husband gambled, and somehow he got it all in her name, so she’s trying to figure that out. Meanwhile, both her husband and father-in-law are deceased, and her mother-in-law is her only family left. So she follows her back to Ohio.

That’s where things get a bit dicier. They’re in a bus accident. This is where Donovan gets involved in their story as he is part of a rescue team.

I don’t want to give away too much here. It’s a great story of personal redemption and finding God, plus there is suspense throughout as well from two separate scenarios.

Tabitha is a favorite of mine!

Loosely based on the biblical account, Not My Hero by Michelle Bolanger is a modern-day take on the story of Ruth that explores how the Lord can take what is broken and make it whole once more.

The novel follows Kennedy Bishop, a recent widow dealing with the consequences of her late husband’s hidden sins, and Donovan Taylor, a godly business man who seeks to be the Lord’s hands and feet to the needy and downtrodden.  Their lives entwine in a number of surprising and unexpected ways after Kennedy and her mother-in-law return to Cora’s hometown upon their husbands’ deaths.

The major theme of the story is trust—trust in the Lord and with others.  In many ways, Not My Hero is a story about what God is doing in the “background,” even, and especially, when we cannot see it.  Readers are encouraged to consider how their response to the difficulties and trials of life can impact their future.  Will they choose to trust and surrender?  Or will they allow bitterness to poison their heart and relationships with others?

Several memorable quotes include:

“If you don't let the Lord heal what's broken, you'll stay so focused on your pain that you'll miss what He's giving you right now. You'll miss what He wants for your future.”

“Trust starts with understanding. . .”

“The Lord has provided everything we need. . . And God is the only One who will sustain us, no matter what happens.”

While some of the legal aspects of the story did seem a little far-fetched to me, Not My Hero is an interesting and unique read perfect for readers who enjoy modern-retelling of biblical stories that highlight the beauty of the gospel.

Kennedy's life goes sideways when her husband and father-in-law both die in a fire, then her job interview turns into an interrogation about her dead husband's money. Though cleared of involvement in things she'd known nothing about, the betrayal cuts deep and she's left with no hope of getting the police job she trained for. So when she accompanies her mother-in-law back to Ohio, she has no interest in getting involved with another man - not even the man who saved her life when their bus crashed. Donovan is a rescuer, but some people don't want to be saved. Can both Kennedy and Donovan learn to trust in God's plan and his goodness or will they insist on going their own ways? Because as life gets complicated, it's only by trusting that they can have any hope of a future together.

A delightful reimagining of the story of Ruth in the modern day. It manages a good balance of following the original and being its own story, with plenty of deliberate nods to Ruth (which various characters recognise and note) but also plenty of differences so that it avoided the thing I dislike of making me spend my reading time predicting what's going to come next to fit it to the original. Independent of the retelling, I loved getting to know both Kennedy and Donovan, not to mention various of the secondary characters (NOT including Marcey). The spiritual themes were inspiring without being heavy-handed, and Donovan and Kennedy's respective back stories wove together beautifully to provide reasons to be both together and separate. I particularly appreciated the way that Kennedy's mother-in-law supported and encouraged her. This was my first read by the author but I'm hoping it won't be my last. Recommended.

Okay, this was a book with a lot of grit to it. It was not an easy read, and it covered tougher topics with a hard fought hallelujah in the end. All that said, if you'll come along on the journey of this Ruth retelling, it is a wonderful read!

Kennedy has not only lost her husband, but also the life she knew and now is in debt. With the decision to move alongside her MIL, she crosses paths with Donovan. Donovan has his own fears holding him back. He's achieved a lot in the shadow of the loss of both of his parents and works to do God's will, but he also feels the burden of his past mistakes. Having essentially sworn off women after his past missteps, he finds Kennedy is the one woman who makes him want to change his plans. But nothing is as it seems, and everything is standing in the way of a possibility of a future together. They'll need to trust not just each other, but God to make a way when things seem impossible.

From the very beginning of this story, you know it's going to be a faith filled fight, romance that requires a bit of a roller coaster, and characters getting their chance at redemption and a second chance. Donovan and Kennedy had me hooked on their story the moment they met. I did not envision all the pushback these two would have to overcome to be together. But gosh, I was rooting for them!

I gave this a 4.5 rounded to a 5!

Not My Hero is my first introduction to Michelle Bolanger's books.

I was blindsided going into this book. The prologue deals with heavier themes (see content warnings) that I was not prepared for. I thought from the cover that this would be a light contemporary story. It's not. It is gritty, messy, and real. That is not a bad thing; it's just not what I thought I was getting into.

Kennedy is a strong character, and I admired/appreciated her resilience to start over after devastating losses. Her grit and determination are what had me rooting for her.

Donavan has also had his share of hardships. The difference is, Kennedy's were thrust upon her, and his were the consequences of his decisions (at least to an extent).

As I said earlier, this story is gritty, and I struggled to connect with the characters. As a personal pet peeve, there is minor cursing (several he--, bloody he--, and a--). I also didn't like that the characters knew they were living a modern-day story of Ruth; it just struck me as odd.

Overall, there is enough mystery and intrigue to keep the story moving. The family dynamics, secrets revealed, and family drama are realistic and fascinating, and might even make you appreciate your own family dynamics, LOL.

content warnings: prostitution, sex trafficking, mentions of abuse, loss of parents, loss of spouse, non-sexual nudity, attempted rape

New-to-me author Michelle Bolanger’s story about Cora Franklin and Kennedy Bishop parallels that of the biblical account of Ruth and Naomi. You may remember that this mother-in-law and daughter-in-law duo were two widows who lost everything because of their husbands’ decisions.

Bolanger’s theme is about making up for past mistakes and how we react/respond when our integrity is challenged. It’s full of signposts for the reader as well as being emotionally charged and character-driven. It took a while for me to feel comfortable with this one, but when I did, I LOVED it. My advice: keep flipping pages.

Donovan Taylor instantly won me over with his response to correction and his willingness to learn from his mistakes. He was given a second chance when he was younger and learned to be a conduit of this grace for others.

Kennedy Bishop took a little longer to win me over because I wasn’t sure of her intentions. However, once she was put in a position to trust what she knew about Donovan rather than what she was seeing, I was immediately on her side. I learned from her choice and her ability to trust.

I appreciated the advice to be careful when we start to presume that the loss we endure is bigger than our faith in God because we are entering dangerous territory.

If you enjoy questioning the direction the author is going with her story as I do, love redemption arcs and second chances, and appreciate some pulse-pounding moments to balance out the sweet kisses and low-key tension, don’t miss out on this one. There’s so much ‘meat and potatoes’ beyond the unassuming cover!

I was gifted this copy and was under no obligation to provide a review.

"Not My Hero" is a loose, contemporary retelling of the Book of Ruth. I really enjoyed the parallel themes between this story and the Biblical one, and the author's willingness to show the grittier, realistic side of Christian fiction. The characters aren't perfect, and they deal with realistic issues and real sinful struggles (just a heads-up for some readers: there is light language in this one that might be a turn-off to some Christian fiction readers. It was done very well, showing how much control it takes to have over one's tongue, especially in high conflict situations.). It was refreshing to read a truthful account of wrestling with trust -- for both characters in their relationships with God and each other.

The development of the two characters was done beautifully. And I really enjoyed the relationship between Kennedy and Cora, always a plus in reading a retelling of Ruth. I did find myself skimming the parts with the trust fund, as it was a little difficult to follow. (Though that was probably more my own disinterest in the details of the financial world. An accountant or lawyer would probably really enjoy it.)

Really looking forward to reading more from Michelle Bolanger in the future!

What I love about Not My Hero by Michelle Bolanger is the way she captivated my attention from the beginning. The way she writes helps me to visualize everything as if it were happening right in front of me. The suspense created moments that were intense and made me want to keep reading.

This book is loosely based on the book of Ruth, and I could see the parallel similarities between Cora and Kennedy to Naomi and Ruth, as well as Donovan to Boaz.

I felt bad for Kennedy as life continued to knock her down everywhere she went. But Michelle did a great job of giving us hope in the hardship.

The real and raw grittiness of the characters shows us what life is like and is a reminder that not everything is always perfect and goes according to plan.

As a Christian Fiction book, the only pause I had was with some very mild language, and some of those intense moments caught me off guard. What I know of Michelle as an author is that she isn’t afraid to show us what real life is, no matter how hard or heartbreaking it can be. That makes her such a great writer. I honestly cannot wait for her next book!

Well to start off i really enjoyed this book. This story follows a young widow who is so trying to piece her life back together after a devastating loss, while also dealing with the weight of responsibility and the struggle to move forward when everything feels uncertain. The returns to a familiar place in hoping to start over a fresh clean start.... but healing is never as simple as it seems.

during her journey she meets a man who appears to have it all together on the outside, yet is quietly carrying his own struggles and trying to live a life of purpose while staying true to his faith. their paths cross and leads them both into a journey of healing, trust and chances.

This was an emotional and heartfelt book with strong faith elements woven throughout in a good natural way. it took me on a journey of learning to ones heart again...

Going into Not My Hero by Michelle Bolanger completely blind, I had no idea what to expect—but I was hooked from the very first chapter!

The story tackles a pretty heavy topic right off the bat, delivering a powerful lesson: just because someone has made bad decisions in their life doesn't mean they don't deserve a second chance. Michelle crafts a beautiful narrative centered on redemption, learning from past mistakes, turning back to the Lord, and putting total reliance on Him.

I loved that this is a modern-day retelling of the biblical story of Ruth, Naomi, and Boaz. I'd never read anything quite like it before, and it was such a refreshing, deeply moving experience.

The book is packed with raw emotion, thrilling suspense, genuine friendship, and love—both romantic and godly. It took me through every possible feeling: joy, sadness, anger, and frustration. Plus, the chemistry between Donovan and Kennedy gave me tingles several times!

Michelle Bolanger’s writing style in Not My Hero is impressive. Some of my favorite moments were how she wrote suspense, intensity, and action into the story. She writes descriptively in a manner that made it easy for me to imagine the scenes as they unfolded. I was very hopeful and anticipatory as I read this novel. It was an enjoyable read to wind down the evening many nights.

Faith was definitely woven into this novel, but in an interesting way. It wasn’t preachy or forced, although it fictionally pulled from a beloved Bible story. I love how gently but evidently faith was infused in the novel.

Not My Hero had a dual point of view between Donovan, the male main character, and Kennedy, the female lead. I was easily able to learn more about each character based on their POV as I read the novel.

I connected with Kennedy the most. She was so resilient, loyal, and brave. Also, Donovan, because he was such a hero and one who overcame! Very admirable.
By the end of the story, the piece that lingered with me was definitely the villain’s downfall.

I rated Not My Hero 4 stars because the affection and passion towards the end of the book wasn’t as strong as the rest of the writing in my opinion.

I recommend this book to anyone who appreciates scenes that come to life in your imagination and novels that have faith themes, action, suspense, drama, and romance in one story.

Beautiful Writing

My thoughts:
This book immediately grabbed me and did not let go. Donovan was such a great character. I loved his faith and how focused he was on helping others. Kennedy was so sweet. Her devotion to Cora was beautiful.
This story has fantastic faith themes and it's so exciting, especially in the beginning. I really enjoyed the writing style, it was a really good balance of the surroundings and the inner lives of the characters.
Absolutely check this out if you enjoy Christian romance with grit and truth.

Content: Mentions of solicitation and abuse.

Quotes I liked:
"I don't focus on what is in the past because I can see what God is doing now. He's providing everything we need right in front of our eyes." Her fingers tightened again. "Don't miss it, Kennedy. We can grieve what happened to us. We can even be angry about it, but we can't live in the past. It will eat us alive."

"Forty years old and the man can't even remember his own birthday."
"Wait. What?" I sputtered. "I'm not even close to forty!"
"Oh. My bad." Ella smiled sweetly. "You just act so much older than you are, it's hard to keep track."
I looked at Matt incredulously. "Are you going to let her talk to me like that?"

I'd been in a haze of pain and shock when he'd pulled me out of the water, which meant I had no idea if he was good looking–but it didn't matter. It had been the way he made me feel. From the moment he dropped into the water beside me, I knew I was safe.

What are you doing? My brain challenged. Falling in love. My heart responded.
