Jen Bray delivers an entertaining and fun story that keeps you hooked from the very first chapter. The Lies Between Us centers on complex relationships, buried secrets, and the ripple effects of past decisions. The plot follows intertwined characters whose lives are shaped by hidden truths, gradually unravelling as the story progresses.
Without giving too much away, the novel explores themes of trust, betrayal, and the consequences of silence. As secrets come to light, the tension builds steadily, making it difficult to put the book down. The author does a great job of creating suspense while also giving readers insight into each character’s motivations and vulnerabilities.
The writing is engaging and easy to follow, with well-paced twists that feel entertaining if somewhat a little out there (but that's the entertaining element of it too that keeps the reader guessing ).
Overall, The Lies Between Us is a compelling read with plenty of drama and intrigue. It’s perfect for fans of thriller stories with a touch of mystery. This fun read remined me a little of the Bad Sisters Series on TV …Fun and entertaining, the perfect holiday read.

At the start of January I took this book everywhere with me, completely hooked on the storyline and determined to keep my nose in it and ignore the general goings on around me (including a night away in a fancy hotel 😅) hence several photos in various places.
This is the debut novel from journalist Jen Bray and it nicely slots into the pantheon of great crime and thriller books written by other Irish authors.
Three sisters; Lucy, Suzannah, and Tara, all dealing with their own struggles and somewhat estrangement from each other.
Years previously a devastating event in New York left Lucy with physical scarring and trauma she’s still dealing with. Suzannah and Tara won’t speak to each other as a direct result of this incident but Lucy hopes that a nice dinner in their mother’s summer cottage in Dunmore East can help move things forward.
Before Tara arrives however, Suzannah disappears in quite creepy circumstances, and along with their mother, the family must dig up some long buried secrets to find Suzannah before it’s too late.
The timelines in this book jump around a bit in order to give the reader the full backstory and I really loved how these narratives came together, particularly when we visited the 80’s and heard from the girls’ mother, who unbeknownst to her daughters once had her own messy life complete with turmoil and intrigue. There’s a strong sense of fate in this book; the inescapable, predetermined path life takes you on, and in the case of Lucy, a path that was started before she was even born.
I love when I read books in this genre and am kept guessing until the end, and truly there’s no way I could have worked this one out myself!
This is a clever and complex thriller packed with family drama, well-developed characters, tension, and unexpected plot twists.
I found it completely compelling, and struggled to put it down and I loved that the story has an emotional heart to it as well as the mystery.
I’m hoping we get a follow-up in the future as I really liked Lucy as a character and would love to see what she does next!

I received an advance proof copy of Jen Bray’s debut novel The Lies Between Us, out February 2026, from Penguin Ireland. I’m familiar with Jen’s journalism with the Irish Times and Sunday Times, and wondered how well her skills would transfer to fiction writing. Very well as it turns out!
This is a family drama/suspense novel mostly set in Dunmore East, Co Waterford featuring three sisters Susannah, Tara and Lucy who have a complex history between them. Susannah has summoned Lucy to the family’s cottage in Dunmore East for reasons yet to be revealed, but shortly after Lucy arrives, Susannah goes missing and a body is found on the beach nearby.
With a timeline spanning 1983, to 1994, to the present day we learn about some of the family’s secrets that have led to the fractures in their relationship with each other. I loved the 1983 timeline in particular - the downtrodden, oppressed housewives of the time (Maggie and Evelyn) are particularly interesting and the intrigue in the book really stems from their relationships at that time.
It took a little while for me to get into the book - a lot of characters, some of whom aren’t that relevant to the story slowed it down a little. I didn’t enjoy the New York chapters all that much. However, once the story got going, it took off like a rocket and I didn’t want to put it down. Cape Fear vibes towards the end! A great debut. 4/5 ⭐️

Unfortunately I couldn’t get into this at all. The writing seems to have no natural flow. Short staccato sentences with overuse of dramatic language made it hard to read. Good ideas for a story but not the page turner the other reviews (from those with advance copies so presumably a friendly audience) led me to believe.

przepełnioną tajemnicami rodzinnymi historię, w której aż iskrzy od napięcia! Serio, „Kłamstwa
między nami”, to jedna z tych powieści, które przenoszą Cię w inne miejsce, momentalnie
wyostrzasz zmysły skupiając się na fabule książki i żaden gwar nadmorskich / basenowych
kurortów nie będzie Ci straszny. Opowiadania sąsiadów z leżaka obok zostaną totalnie
niesłyszalne, gdyż stawiam stówę, że tak się wczujesz w spiralę kłamstw nawarstwianych na
przestrzeni wielu lat w rodzinie Susanny, Lucy i Tary, aż zapomnisz o otaczającej Cię
rzeczywistości. U mnie łyknięta dosłownie w dwa upalne popołudnia, przemoczona od wody,

Główna oś fabularna rozgrywa się w czasach obecnych, podczas rodzinnego spotkania,
gdzie dochodzi do zaginięcia jednej z sióstr. Każda z nich nosi pełen bagaż doświadczeń i
nieprzepracowanych traum, problemów życia codziennego, z którymi boryka się na własną rękę.
Autorka wykonała świetną robotę kreując te dziewczyny - ich relacje, jak również portrety
psychologiczne zostały przedstawione z niezwykłą precyzją. Lucy jest byłą policjantką, której
doskwiera problematyczne (w szczególności pod względem wykonywanego niegdyś zawodu)
zjawisko neurologiczne zwane synestezją typu „lustrzane odbicie”.
Charakteryzuje się ono współodczuwaniem bólu innych ludzi, co momentami skutkuje nawet w nadmiernym przekładaniem cudzych emocji nad własne. Np. widząc, że inny człowiek cierpi katusze po pobiciu, kobieta jest w stanie zemdleć z autentycznego bólu fizycznego przeniesionego na własne
ciało - zwyczajnie patrząc. Mamy tu również powieściopisarkę z ogromnym parciem na odniesienie sukcesu w branży oraz Tarę, podkochującą się w mężu tej poprzedniej. Ogólnie rodzinka, jak z obrazka, ale takiego pokreślonego markerami z nienawiści. Iskrzy między nimi, a tak konkretnie problemów można się doszukiwać w latach osiemdziesiątych w układach małżeńskich ich rodziców. Ta linia narracyjna sprzed kilku dekad najmocniej mnie zaangażowała, każdorazowo wyczekiwałam flashbacków prowadzących do dzieciństwa kobiet i niezdrowej relacji kotłującej się w rodzinnym domu.
Motywów tu cała masa - od nieszczęśliwych związków małżeńskich, niesatysfakcjonujących układów partnerskich i niespełnionych marzeń. Przewija się również wątek przemocy w stosunku do kobiet, nadmiernego spożywania alkoholu, zdrad, oraz straty. Warto przeczytać i przewartościować niektóre relacje, które być może toksycznie ciążą i w Twoim życiu.

Lucy has been summoned by her oldest sister Susannah to their mother’s seaside holiday home in Dunmore East. Middle sister Tara is also invited, which intrigues Lucy as it’s been 11 years since Tara and Susannah have spoken, since a life altering event in New York City. However, before Tara arrives, Susannah is threatened at the front door and disappears into the night, telling Lucy to lock the door and wait for her. When news breaks in the morning that a body of a woman has been found, it sparks the beginning of Lucy bringing long buried family secrets to the surface.
I loved this book! It captured my attention right from the first chapter. We alternate each chapter with the current timeline and 2011 New York. The chapters are quite short, so I loved how it flowed, it kept it fast paced. This speeds up even more when the April 1983 timeline is introduced, going back to when Susannah and Tara are young and slowly reveals how their parents’ actions then are the catalyst for the events in the 2011 and present timelines.
Each of the sisters are flawed and holding secrets from each other. Lucy is the point of view we have for the present timeline and we see real growth with her throughout the story. I would love to revisit her life post this book to see how much more she has grown.
The tension simmers away under the surface, slowly coming to a boil as secrets are revealed. There’s plenty of twists and turns that didn’t feel over dramatic or misleading, it was well balanced and believable. I don’t often read from this genre but when I do, I want the book to be as well crafted as this one!

Muszę przyznać, że bardzo trudno jest mi jednoznacznie ocenić tę książkę, dlatego chwilowo zostawię ją bez oceny. Na co dzień nie sięgam po thrillery ani kryminały, ponieważ zazwyczaj są one dla mnie po prostu przewidywalne. Niestety mam tendencję do tego, by po kilku rozdziałach wyczuć to, w jakim kierunku podąży fabuła, i niestety w przypadku „Kłamstw między nami” nie było inaczej.
Największy problem, jaki miałam z tą historią nie była jej przewidywalność, ale to, w jaki sposób została ona poprowadzona. Czytelnik zmierza przez trzy linie czasowe, co samo w sobie jest zabiegiem zrozumiałym i mającym na celu poszerzenie perspektywy oraz stopniowe odkrywanie tajemnicy, ale niestety, w praktyce sprawiło to, że czas poświęcony każdej z nich był dość ograniczony, przez co rozwój fabuły w poszczególnych wątkach wydaje się powierzchowny. Odniosłam wrażenie, że wiele istotnych tematów zostało jedynie zasygnalizowanych, zamiast zostać w pełni rozwiniętych i pogłębionych. Być może gdyby książka liczyła sobie sto stron więcej, problem ten przestałby istnieć. Miałam jednak wrażenie, że autorka sama nie ma pomysłu na to, jak pociągnąć to dalej, dlatego rzuca nam byle ochłap, licząc na to, że machniemy ręką i będziemy czytać dalej.
Dotyczy to zarówno wątku napaści w Nowym Jorku i jej wpływu na dalsze życie Lucy. Osobiście mam wrażenie, że więcej uwagi poświęcono na podkreślenie tego, dlaczego 16 latka opuściła hotel w trakcie śnieżycy, niż konsekwencjom, jakie za sobą to niosło. Podobnie dzieje się w drugiej linii czasowej, mającej miejsce przed narodzinami Lucy, w 1983 roku. Szczególnie szkoda mi właśnie tego wątku, ponieważ potencjał do pokazania życia bohaterów po traumatycznych wydarzeniach oraz ich prób powrotu do codzienności w Dublinie nie został w ogóle wykorzystany. Brakuje tu głębszego spojrzenia na emocje, relacje i konsekwencje, które mogłyby jeszcze bardziej wzmocnić wymowę tej historii.
Niestety również współczesna linia czasowa sprawia wrażenie niedopracowanej. Dzieje się w niej jednocześnie dużo i niewiele. Poza ciągłym podkreślaniem wyjątkowej przypadłości Lucy, jaką jest syntezja, dzięki której potrafi ona lepiej odczytywać emocje innych ludzi, brakuje pogłębienia jej wewnętrznych przeżyć. W szczególności niewiele uwagi poświęcono emocjonalnemu obciążeniu związanemu ze zniknięciem jednej z sióstr, które powinno być jednym z kluczowych elementów narracji.
Brakowało mi przede wszystkim napięcia, tego charakterystycznego dla thrillerów dreszczyku, który sprawia, że czytelnik dosłownie „siedzi jak na szpilkach” i z rosnącym niepokojem przewraca kolejne strony. Niestety, w tej kwestii spotkało mnie rozczarowanie. Może wymagałam za dużo? Oczekiwałam historii, która wciągnie mnie emocjonalnie i utrzyma w ciągłym napięciu, ale ostatecznie moje oczekiwania okazały się zbyt wysokie. Zastanawiam się jednak, czy nie wynika to również z mojej perspektywy jako czytelniczki; będąc fanką true crime jestem przyzwyczajona do historii bardziej intensywnych i emocjonalnie trudniejszych w odbiorze, przez co fikcyjne fabuły osadzone w takim klimacie, mogą wydawać mi się mniej angażujące i bardziej przewidywalne.
Na zdecydowany plus zasługuje natomiast lekkość i płynność z jaką czyta się książkę - szybko i bez większego wysiłku. Jak na debiut, styl autorki jest naprawdę udany. prosty, przystępny i przyjemny w odbiorze. Właśnie ta lekkość była jednym z powodów, dla których mimo wszystko dobrnęłam do końca książki.
Nie uważam jej jednak za złą pozycję, po prostu nie była ona skierowana do mnie. Myślę, że może przypaść do gustu osobom, które szukają lżejszego thrillera, bez zbyt dużego ciężaru emocjonalnego czy skomplikowanej konstrukcji fabularnej. Właśnie dlatego sama zdecydowałam się ją przekazać dalej, sądzę, że może bardziej spodobać się mojej mamie, która uwielbia tego typu historię. A ja nadal będę szukać thrillera, który wbije mnie w fotel.

Oczekiwałam historii, która wciągnie mnie emocjonalnie i utrzyma w ciągłym napięciu, ale ostatecznie moje oczekiwania okazały się zbyt wysokie. Zastanawiam się jednak, czy nie wynika to również z mojej perspektywy jako czytelniczki; będąc fanką true crime jestem przyzwyczajona do historii bardziej intensywnych i emocjonalnie trudniejszych w odbiorze, przez co fikcyjne fabuły osadzone w takim klimacie, mogą wydawać mi się mniej angażujące i bardziej przewidywalne.
Na zdecydowany plus zasługuje natomiast lekkość i płynność z jaką czyta się książkę - szybko i bez większego wysiłku. Jak na debiut, styl autorki jest naprawdę udany. prosty, przystępny i przyjemny w odbiorze. Właśnie ta lekkość była jednym z powodów, dla których mimo wszystko dobrnęłam do końca książki.
Nie uważam jej jednak za złą pozycję, po prostu nie była ona skierowana do mnie. Myślę, że może przypaść do gustu osobom, które szukają lżejszego thrillera, bez zbyt dużego ciężaru emocjonalnego czy skomplikowanej konstrukcji fabularnej. Właśnie dlatego sama zdecydowałam się ją przekazać dalej, sądzę, że może bardziej spodobać się mojej mamie, która uwielbia tego typu historię. A ja nadal będę szukać thrillera, który wbije mnie w fotel.

This domestic thriller has an intriguing premise full of complex family dynamics. The story is told across multiple timelines which gives you a lot of backstory of everything going on.
The characters were well developed, but there were quite a few of them to keep track of, especially right off the bat. This might have been one of the reasons it took me a little bit to get into this story.

I'm not a crime thriller reader generally so I had no preconceived notions going in. I picked this up after I saw Jen speak at a Read Women's Event in Dublin and I was very intrigued. It was also an Admin pick for a book club I am in, so I was definitely looking forward to joining the discussion. I thoroughly enjoyed this from start to finish. I've already told my mam she has to read it. I loved all the twists and turns. There are so many moments when you'll think you know what happened and then the story will throw something else at you and keep you guessing until the end. Definitely one of those books you don't want to put down until you've gotten to the bottom the mystery.

It was very difficult to figure out who was who. The story jumped back and forth from different characters eyes. I had to keep trying to figure out who the story was about. The secrets that came out were no surprise . It was too dragged out and also far fetched. I didn’t enjoy it.

This book sucked me in from page one with its immersive, vivid descriptions and never really let me go. The story is layered so well, with untangled secrets dripping through the narrative in a way that kept me completely hooked.
I picked it back up at chapter 6 and ended up devouring the rest in one sitting before bed - admittedly a later bedtime than planned, because there was no way I wasn’t finishing it.
One of the things that kept me most invested was the strained dynamic between the three sisters. It had me constantly wondering what could possibly have driven that bond so far apart, and that curiosity followed me right through the book. Jen reveals things at such a satisfying pace that I felt myself always wanting just one more chapter.
The inclusion of mirror touch synaesthesia was absolutely fascinating - I genuinely couldn’t believe it was a real condition and ended up down a full Google rabbit hole afterwards.
I also really loved the emotional depth of Evelyn as a mother. Some of her reflections on motherhood felt deeply relatable, while others were completely heartbreaking. That balance of warmth, pain, and honesty really stays with the reader.
And then chapter 34 - I genuinely snorted a very unattractive laugh at the end, which felt like such a brilliant moment in the middle of all the tension and emotion.
For a debut novel, this is such an impressive book. Jen Bray should be incredibly proud. She’s also such a lovely person, which makes cheering her on even easier.
Any future release from her will be an automatic purchase for me - no blurb needed.

Jen reveals things at such a satisfying pace that I felt myself always wanting just one more chapter.
The inclusion of mirror touch synaesthesia was absolutely fascinating - I genuinely couldn’t believe it was a real condition and ended up down a full Google rabbit hole afterwards.
I also really loved the emotional depth of Evelyn as a mother. Some of her reflections on motherhood felt deeply relatable, while others were completely heartbreaking. That balance of warmth, pain, and honesty really stays with the reader.
And then chapter 34 - I genuinely snorted a very unattractive laugh at the end, which felt like such a brilliant moment in the middle of all the tension and emotion.
For a debut novel, this is such an impressive book. Jen Bray should be incredibly proud. She’s also such a lovely person, which makes cheering her on even easier.
Any future release from her will be an automatic purchase for me - no blurb needed.

Historia trzech sióstr, które łączą sekrety. Dwie z sióstr – Lucy i Susanna przyjeżdżają do małego miasteczka w Irlandii i tego samego wieczoru na klifach zostaje znalezione ciało kobiety. Susanna znika bez śladu. Lucy zaczyna prowadzić swoje własne śledztwo. Jak wiele kłamstw i sekretów wyjdzie na jaw?
Wszystko rozgrywa się na trzech płaszczyznach czasowych. Może się wydawać, że to dużo, ale naprawdę nie da się w tym zgubić. Ja bardzo lubię jak historia dzieje się „dwa razy”, lubię te wszystkie wstawki z przeszłości, które rozwiewają teraźniejszość.
Kilku rzeczy jednak zabrakło. Jedna z sióstr, Lucy, cierpi na pewną chorobę wskutek której na własnym ciele odczuwa emocje innych osób. Początkowo myślałam, że właśnie to Lucy i jej choroba będą na pierwszym planie. Nie mogę powiedzieć, że tak nie było, jednak wielkie zapowiedzi zostały potraktowane trochę po macoszemu i sam fakt odczuwania przez Lucy emocji innych, wciskany był tam, gdzie – moim zdaniem – akurat autorce to pasowało. Tak jakby w trakcie pisania powieści akurat przypomniało jej się, że czas przypomnieć o chorobie Lucy ;)
Nie potrafię jednoznacznie ocenić tej książki. Pomimo tego, że nie było żadnego dreszczyku emocji, czytało się to fantastycznie. Mnie ta zagadka wciągnęła, byłam zaangażowana w stu procentach w wydarzenia z przeszłości. I tak naprawdę to one bardziej mnie porywały niż teraźniejszość. Zaginięcie Susanny było już bardziej tłem do wydarzeń z przeszłości niż głównym wątkiem fabularnym. Zdecydowanie bardziej określiłabym tę książkę jako obyczajówkę z wątkiem kryminalnym.

While Lucy searches for Susannah, the rest of the family comes down to Dunmore East where secrets about their life are revealed.
My favourite aspect of this book was the writing and the story development. I really enjoyed the descriptions and the flow of the book, I felt like it was a movie in my head. The story is also set in the past and present, I didn’t find this confusing.
I liked how unique and individual the characters felt, it was clear what their characteristics and personalities were. Also interesting to read about their own motivations !!
I enjoyed the fast pace of the book and the short chapters, I couldn’t put the book down!

The Lies Between Us is an fascinating story of family, hidden secrets, miscommunication and the complications that arise from the choices we make. The central characters are three feuding sisters : Susannah, Tara and Lucy who have a complex family dynamic. Their story is set in present day Ireland, with flashbacks to New York in 2011 and Dunmore East in 1983. Their backstory, and that of their parents, makes for compelling reading and I particularly enjoyed those sections of the book.
Initially I wasn’t sure I was going to enjoy this one. Maybe it’s me, but I found the story hard to get into, I thought the first half was confusing, and I had no idea which direction it was taking, then suddenly it picked up interest and I was engaged right to the end. The deeper into the book by Jennifer Bray I got the more utterly absorbed I became, as the tension ramped up with carefully revealed secrets.
I loved the way the author developed the plot and sub-plots into one seamless book, spanning the decades. The past and the present were deftly interwoven, tightly unifying the story and everything started to make sense.

Jeszcze przed rozpoczęciem lektury naszła mnie taka myśl, że to może być książka podobna do tych, które pisze Sally Hepworth. Uwielbiam Sally, a od kilku dni uwielbiam też Jen!
Od samego początku dałam się wciągnąć w historię trzech sióstr, rodzinnych sekretów i wydarzeń, które od lat rzucają cień na ich życie. Bardzo lubię powieści, w których przeszłość stopniowo wychodzi na jaw, a w "Kłamstwach między nami" autorka bardzo umiejętnie podeszła do powolnego ujawniania tajemnic i powiązań między bohaterami. Co chwilę wydawało mi się, że już wszystko wiem, po czym następny rozdział uprzejmie informował mnie, że jednak nope.
Doceniam to, jak sprawnie Jen Bray przeplata różne linie czasowe. Czasami, przy wielu perspektywach i skokach w czasie potrafię się lekko pogubić i zmęczyć, ale tutaj wszystko działało elegancko! Każdy kolejny fragment dokładał nowy element do układanki i sprawiał, że myślałam tylko o tym, by znów wziąć książkę do ręki i poznać całą prawdę.
Co jeszcze? BOHATERKI! Nie są idealne, podejmują kiepskie decyzje, wiele przed sobą ukrywają i czasami miałam ochotę lekko nimi potrząsnąć. Ale właśnie to wszystko sprawiło, że wydawały się prawdziwe, takie swojskie i "ludzkie".

Przy "Kłamstwach między nami" bawiłam się kapitalnie! Rodzinne dramy, wciągająca intryga i bohaterki, których los nie był mi obojętny - niczego więcej od dobrej lektury nie wymagam.
Jeszcze przed rozpoczęciem lektury naszła mnie taka myśl, że to może być książka podobna do tych, które pisze Sally Hepworth. Uwielbiam Sally, a od kilku dni uwielbiam też Jen!
Od samego początku dałam się wciągnąć w historię trzech sióstr, rodzinnych sekretów i wydarzeń, które od lat rzucają cień na ich życie. Bardzo lubię powieści, w których przeszłość stopniowo wychodzi na jaw, a w "Kłamstwach między nami" autorka bardzo umiejętnie podeszła do powolnego ujawniania tajemnic i powiązań między bohaterami. Co chwilę wydawało mi się, że już wszystko wiem, po czym następny rozdział uprzejmie informował mnie, że jednak nope.
Doceniam to, jak sprawnie Jen Bray przeplata różne linie czasowe. Czasami, przy wielu perspektywach i skokach w czasie potrafię się lekko pogubić i zmęczyć, ale tutaj wszystko działało elegancko! Każdy kolejny fragment dokładał nowy element do układanki i sprawiał, że myślałam tylko o tym, by znów wziąć książkę do ręki i poznać całą prawdę.
Co jeszcze? BOHATERKI! Nie są idealne, podejmują kiepskie decyzje, wiele przed sobą ukrywają i czasami miałam ochotę lekko nimi potrząsnąć. Ale właśnie to wszystko sprawiło, że wydawały się prawdziwe, takie swojskie i "ludzkie".

Absolutely fascinated with how the author played and manipulated with the consequences of seemingly simple decisions, reactions, opinions that can unravel your life and lead you down a path of destruction.
We follow three sisters, Susannah, Tara and Lucy who have been invited to meet together at their Mom’s typically abandoned holiday cottage. Instantly it is made aware to the reader the strained and broken relationship between the sisters who each carry a suitcase of emotional trauma, secrets, sacrifices and worries.
The novel is broken into three separate parts, with part 2 being particularly brilliant. It was dramatic and brutal reading about the marriage between Evelyn and Patrick (who I really wished someone would have kicked Patrick down a flight of stairs 💀) .
The use of locations was so fun and vivid and the constant suspense of multiple memories and cliffhangers was superb. You can tell how hard the author worked and it really showed throughout every chapter, there are so many twists and secrets you’ll never be bored. In fact.. I sacrificed a nights sleep to finish this 😭 always the sign of a good book leaving you desperate to see how it ends!

Autorka już od pierwszych stron wrzuca czytelnika w sam środek rodzinnych wydarzeń i konfliktów. Stopniowo odkrywamy sekrety skrywane przez trzy siostry oraz ich najbliższych. Tajemnice z przeszłości nie pozostają bez wpływu na teraźniejszość i prowadzą do tragicznych wydarzeń.
Na uwagę zasługuje sposób, w jaki autorka przedstawiła relacje między bohaterami. Udowodniła, że do stworzenia wyrazistych postaci nie potrzeba wielotomowej historii — wystarczy kilka trafnych scen i dobrze poprowadzona narracja.
To zdecydowanie nie jest przewidywalny thriller. Praktycznie do samego końca nie domyśliłam się rozwiązania, a przyznam nieskromnie, że zdarza mi się to rzadko.
