Review of my take on Smokeless Fire, Scorched Skies and Borrowed Ember

Once again I have picked up a book by Samantha Young and was sucked in from page one. I purchased a copy of Smokeless Fire back in Nov of last year because of the beautiful cover art. I decided to wait on reading it until there were a few more books to the series out. With the newest installment Borrowed Ember I finally gave in to the overwhelming urge to start reading the Fire Spirit series. Part of me is glad I waited, I would of been a basket case waiting on the next installments to the series from book one. Once I started reading Smokeless Fire I couldn't put it down, which I then spent the night reading instead of sleeping, it was that good. Once I was finished reading the first part I moved onto Scorched Skies, devoured it and Borrowed Ember. I absoultely loved all three books, not that I expected not to. I have read several books by Samantha Young and have yet to find one I did not fall in love with. Samantha just has a way with words that drags the reader in and keeps them spellbound.

The characters in the series are well written and I loved some and just hated others. But to me that doesn't make the book bad or annoying, quite the opposite. Without those ones that just makes us want to scream and hit something or have us swooning into a pile of goo, books would be very bland and boring. The author creates characters that are diverse with a wide range of personalities. I loved that all three books were told is several PoV, including Ari, Charlie, Jai and Red. I know some readers hate to more than one or two views but I am not one of them. Sometimes a story needs to be told in several views to tie the story together, to let you see what is going on in their heads. I am all for different PoV's.

I adored Ari and Fallon, they were like night and day but deep down they were sisters. Both had their strengths and weaknesses. Ari, though completely misguided with her believed feelings for Charlie, became more than the love struck girl she used to be in book one. I enjoyed seeing her finally stand up and realize that maybe certain people were not who she thought they were and to no longer give them the power to hurt her anymore. I was totally all girl power at this point. All "You go girl, tell him how it is". I am cheering on the inside even while writing this. By book three Ari is starting to get the confidence and support she needs. One thing I am truly happy to see, especially after all the disappointment and rejection she receives in the first two books. Ari, you are going to rock in the final two installments.

Fallon, hehe, she made me laugh. I don't think I have ever seen a character who was not afraid to tell it how it is. She was an honest match for a certain someone. I was glad Ms. Young moved them in that direction. There needed to be a give in that situation. Fallon's personality had me laughing at times, heck half the time I was thinking, "tell me she did not just say that". I think that was the biggest part of her charm, what draws people to her. Though talking about Fallon makes me sad, insert Kleenex here, she is one of my fav characters in the series.

Charlie, oh man, I hate to say it, but wow I really can't stand you at all. Charlie has suffered in his short life, but in the end I don't feel sorry for him. I just think he needs to stop feeling sorry for himself and learn to deal. I know that sounds heartless but, when he just keeps making the same mistakes over and over again and is so involved with his selfish desires I just can't bring myself to like him at all. I am sure I will get haters on this, but hey it's how I feel. I am sure there is a way he could redeem himself but at this point I am not sure he is even worth saving.

Now onto the swoonage. Jai. Yeah all I need to say is his name. I loved his character. Sure he is not perfect, he never denies it or tries to hide it, but at least he is not willing to hurt Ari when he believes he can't give her what she needs. That point alone won me over to Team Jai. I might not like it, but hey I can understand his point of view. Jai is an alpha male if there ever was one. I loved him to pieces. Not many men would be able to live his life and turn out the way he did. Jai is protective and supportive of Ari, honestly he is everything Charlie isn't. I guess what I am saying is that where Ari and Fallon are night and day so too are Jai and Charlie. Overall I am of course 100% TEAM JAI!

Trey, OMG I loved him. I don't think anyone else could be more perfect. I could hug him to bits. I loved how he looked out for Jai's best interest even when if peed Jai off. He is a true friend and I am totally begging Samantha to not kill him in the next installments. I would be heartbroken. Devastated! I definitely love the thought of him and G together. Here is to preying for a HEA for him. Trey may you continue to be witty and just plain loveable.

Samantha has written a beautiful series. Hard to believe that this series for me started out with Cover Love. All the covers are just so pretty, I could look at them for hours. Trust me, the novel inside more than does the cover justice. I have read a few reviews that complained about Red always saving Ari and Jai and her always being interrupted when they are about to kiss, but I didn't find either complaint valid. Sure Red saves the day, but hey he is an all powerful Jinn, if he can't do it who can? Remember guys, he did contract Jai to look after her, she is someone he would be looking out for at all times. As for Jai and Ari, I never found it frustrating or annoying one bit. I found it added to the tension between them, not to mention it follows with the story line of him not trying to lead her on. Makes sense to me.

Borrowed Ember felt a little directionless compared to the first two books. A little slow and wandering for the first half of the book. Ari decides she's going to be a hunter of bad guys because that feels better than being hunted herself. Except for we never know that anyone new is actually after her, she's just a person of interest that some *might* use for dubious purposes (which remain undefined). So in that first half, she trains a lot and makes out with Jai a lot and it felt a little pointless to me (i.e. filler). It's very back loaded as far as action. I think the action could've been spread out to maintain better pacing. As it was, there was some recapping and rushed sequences at the end because it was apparently time for the story to be over.

The tension between Ari and Jai is pretty much reduced to: will they or won't they have sex. This got old after the second round of hot and steamy kissy time that is cut short by Jai the gentleman(of course). (Insert eye roll here.)

This author is really into inserting pop culture references in her work, and it makes me cringe every time. When Red, the super powerful awesome Jinn King says he read Twilight.....uuuuuggggghhhhh. Just, no.

In my review for book 2, I hoped that the author would do something surprising with her dude heavy world. But alas. The most evil characters in this series are all women. Lilif- wants to kill her own children. Nicki- abuses an innocent Jai out of jealousy and spite. Forces Jai's father & brothers to abuse him. Cheats on her husband. The Labartu- the woman who killed Charlie's younger brother for kicks and giggles and then kills another major character later. Yasmin- not that evil, but portrayed as desperately nasty considering Jai's the one that used her. The problem here isn't that they're evil. It's that they're stupidly evil. They are mentally unstable, petty, jealous, vindictive. There is no reason to empathize with them, or to see any intelligence behind their behavior. Whereas if we look at the men who are evil in this book (Asmodeus, Azazil, White) they are calculating, motivated, strategists, and portrayed as Gods that are above ideals of right and wrong. Even though Red and Glass (male characters) kill an innocent man and mess with Charlie, they are still portrayed as sympathetic, good characters. The few positive female characters that exist are , which I thought was particularly nasty and unnecessary. Of course Ari is a good female, but she also seems to be lacking in any flaws. She's beautiful, kind, strong, loyal; just all around awesome sauce that everyone either wants to get with or protect or control. She's on the other end of the black and white spectrum these female characters are painted into. And then we can't forget the harems of women for the Jinn King's pleasure, and the servant girls who are vacant in the eyes.

Do I think these patriarchal overtones are intentional? No. Disappointing, yes. I recognize that patriarchy is likely part of the mythology on which this story is based. BUT, within a fantasy realm, there is so much room to challenge how we see the world. There is a real need for female characters who aren't painted into the virgin/whore dichotomy. To make them complex, real, whole characters. And I'm afraid this series fails at that. Too bad.

**Because this review sounds awfully harsh upon my reviewing it, I want to add that taken as a whole, I thought this series was very unique and entertaining. I loved the concept, and I have really enjoyed Samantha Young's books. Read on! =)

Review: 4 ½ out of 5 stars

** Review contains possible spoilers from books 1 & 2**

Borrowed Ember is the third book in the Fire Spirits series by Samantha Young and follows on where Scorched Skies left off.

At the beginning of this book we see Ari, Jai and the Red King in Mount Qaf for Charlie’s murder trial which is more or less a non-event thanks to the interference of the White King who has inadvertently pushed Ari more into the spotlight of the other Jinn, it is here that she also gains the unwanted attention of centuries old Asmodeus.

Ari has progressed so much in character from the first book where she was learning about who and what she was to now training to hunt and control the darkness of the seal.

I am really enjoying this series and in Borrowed Ember we not only experience the mystery and magic as with the other books but there is also loss and heartbreak as well as self-discovery; a lot of secrets are revealed and the many twists and turns along the way have been surprising yet suited the plot perfectly.

I have loved all of the secondary characters and I felt we learnt more about who could and couldn't be trusted, they are each fleshed out well. I actually despised Charlie that little bit more in this book – he is selfish and his focus on revenge and power is out of control. We learn more about what Jai had to endure at the hands of his own family, his step-mother in particular who has ingrained how worthless and unlovable he was from such a young age but I enjoyed how Ari always stood by him despite his reluctance; I adored and appreciated him all that little bit more in this book, especially how he stood up to his father. The relationship is certainly progressing as well which I love. Trey is witty and adorable and Asmodeus gave me the creeps, he is evil personified. Ms. Maggie was a big surprise!

I felt the first half of the book was slower than what I have come to expect from this series but the pacing certainly picked up and we are thrust into magical mayhem and kick-butt action scenes. I was literally gaping at the ending and kudos to Ms Young for getting rid of a character who I must admit I had become quite fond of; I understand her reasoning but it is always hard when you read about the demise of someone who was quite entertaining and endearing (I wont reveal who it was to avoid spoilers), I would have preferred it if was a character I wasn’t as invested in.

As with the other books in this series, Borrowed Ember was a thoroughly engrossing read; I have loved learning about the Jinn as Ari has and seeing her grow into her powers has been compelling. I enjoy Ms. Young’s writing style and the intricate story she has weaved.

Overall, Borrowed Ember is another wonderful installment in this amazing series which is filled with magic, betrayal, revelations, action and a really sweet romance. I am anxious to get hold of Darkness, Kindled which has an anticipate November release date and is sure to be filled with strong emotion, I think what Ari has been tasked to do will break her heart.

I can't say this enough but Samantha Young is a Genius or should I say Jenius.

This book took me through a journey and I actually found myself wishing I was in the book, it takes alot for a book to impress me or make me gush now a days because I have read so many books that there all starting to sound the same but I can actually say " Borrowed ember " is totally unique and has been one of the best reads this year. I love everything about this book, characters, plot and I can't believe I'm saying this but I felt myself loving the villains.
The Villains in the book are actually different from any I ever read they actually have depth and you can actually see that there not really evil it's more complicated than that and you determine who the villain is by choosing a side which to me has been hard to choose especially in this book cause it's hard to see who actually right. It's especially confusing ,because in this book ,Red and White king are both shady characters but they both have a depth that makes them endearing to the reader especially the Red King I was so surprised by his action in this book I felt myself hating him for deceiving Ari but at times you saw a side of him that was sweet and actually cared about Ari but I guess time will tell who's side he's actually in and even the White king had redeeming moments even though in the end he did a really shitty thing he wasn't as bad as I thought he was but yeah after the book ended I can't say that I'm wishing a happy ending for the White King.

But one thing I'm sure about is that I love Ari and Jai together they make the perfect couple there not sickly sweet and they both have flaws which makes me love them more. I'm really glad Jai confronted his dad in the end and made it known that he loves Ari I think Jai has changed the most out of any character for the good. Don't get me started on Charlie grrr... I hated Charlie from the beginning of the series he's always been a coward and hidden behind his brothers death blaming every action he's done on his brothers death but instead of growing into a better person and trying to do good he became a pot head and a slut and blamed everything on that fateful day. But I guess everyone grieves in a different way but the way Charlie did in wasn't only hurting him he was hurting Ari but i'm glad Ari finally woke up and realized that she was never in love with Charlie and that what she has with Jai is the real thing.
But I found myself hating Charlie even more in this book specially at the end. I kept wishing Samantha would kill Charlie through out the whole book he's so stupid and to me he seems even more evil than the White King or any other villain because at least the White King can't comprehend that what he's doing is wrong but Charlie knows that what he is doing is wrong and he's just a coward who hides behind everyone and in the end I wished it would have been Charlie who died

I can't say it enough I love this series and can't wait to read the next book.

I just bought this novel today and gosh, it pulled at my heart strings. I don't want to say too much to give it away, even with hiding the spoilers. So lets do this in point form, giving away little.

-We start the novel off with Charlie's trial. He is set free and still determined to get his revenge.

-Jai and Ari are getting closer together while Charlie still loves Ari, he has entered a relationship with Fallon.

-The Kings go to war with each other, each following different orders and trying to control 'The Seal'. Which results in numerous deaths by the end of the novel.

-Amosdeus rips 'The Seal' out of Ari's body, she nearly dies but Red saves her, along with Glass. She is now 100% full blood and has no 'Seal' powers or the essence of Lilif left in her.

-White captures Jai and puts him in a bottle, Ari rescues him.

-Charlie gets revenge and disobeys all. He even isn't loyal to Ari, then magically disappears.

-Ari is given a kill order for Charlie.

That pretty much sums up the whole book and I did end up giving away a lot of it but what can you do when a book this awesome comes along? I think this is the best one out of all the novels in the series. However I am a little sad about the things that have occurred. I can't wait until FALL 2012 for the fourth book.

So i remember when i first started reading this series. Conjuring? Seven Jinn Kings? What? Why am i reading this? Then i met Jai (insert swoon here) and somehow he talked me into giving the series a chance. So i finished book 1 and thought my god...I almost didn't read this. What was wrong with me? Borrowed Ember....Samantha Youngs writing is soooo (geesh i can't think of a word) creative...different. And i do love a book with more than one POV and Samantha gives this to us. You get to see the POV of Charlie, Jai, Ari, Red....without it being too much. I once read this book called the Dark Inside of Me and it seemed like it had such potential...plus there were about 4 POV's in her book as well, but you weren't able to connect with the characters emotionally due to all her jumping around. Yet with Samantha Young...connecting was not an issue. Without including a spoiler alert i'll just say...the two people we lost in this book absolutely crushed me. I felt as though as much as i loved one of those characters....that person was dumb for putting themselves in the position that they were in...as for the other character....so noble. I can't think of a more noble death. And i do hope Red and Ari mend there relationship in the next book...he is turning out to be quite the father figure and i love their relationship. You also get to see alot of Jai and Ari's relationship...and i think it is blossoming beautifully. Jai's speech to his father at the end was epic. I think i may have accidentally cheered loudly at times. Btw...can we just kill Nicki? I mean do we really need her? Or maybe torture her? I really do hope Ari and Jayi get there happily ever after sometime soon. It seems like there always running...i hope next book Ari and Jai find time to finally give themselves to one another. I know it's going to be epic. Some good has to happen after all the people Ari has lost.

And SAMANTHA!! THANK-YOU. I saw the estimated release date for the next book and you waste no time! You are jumping right into the 4th book in this installment. I absolutely hate when i have to wait a year in a half for the next book in an installment it's why i steer clear of series that aren't yet done. Once again....this book is a must read if you've read her other two. Belle Malory of Wanderlove and Samantha Young have similar writing styles as far as they both can draw you into a book you never imagined yourself reading in the first place, but they are still completely original and unique in their own way. Wanderlove is about Gypsies where Samantha's series is about Jinn....two things i never saw myself reading but now i pretty much live my life based off the fact that i know these two authors are writing another epic novel!

Can't wait till book 4! :)

Ah, where do I begin? I guess first I want to say that Sam Young is a brilliant writer and everything that I have read by her has been phenomenal. So, now, I am now ALWAYS eager to get my hands on something she has published...
With that said, let me tell you about Borrowed Ember. This is the third book in the Fire Spirits series and WOW!!! From start to finish, you are just blown away at everything that happens in this book. I was so excited when this book came out and being able to pick up with Ari because at the end of Scorched Skies, we were left wondering what was going to happen to Charlie, her best friend. And YAY!! Borrowed Ember picks right up from where Scorched Skies left off and in no time, we are thrust back in to the world of the Jinn. So much happens in this book that truly you are glued to it throughout just to make sure you don't miss any details.
Once we learned about Charlie, the turmoil heats up and we follow Ari through a series of events that is nail-biting, heart-wrenching, terrifying, yet at the same time having some fun, passionate moments with our hero of Borrowed Ember, Jai. Oh Jai, he is the guy that every girl wants. And the love story between these two fills your heart making you crave more when the book ends.
And sadly, yes, the book ends...and as I already mentioned above that I am now ALWAYS eager to get my hands on anything Sam Young has written, so, I am absolutely DYING to read Darkness, Kindled. I LOVE these characters and falling in to their world. It is unique, intriguing, fascinating, and it completely overwhelms you with a storyline so powerful, that you won't put it down.
Borrowed Ember is a GREAT read. If you haven't started this series yet, Go out TODAY and get Smokeless Fire, book one and get started....I HIGHLY recommend this series and of course this book!!!

It was AWESOME!

Now i understand why Samantha said this was complicated in writing..i agree with her..writing from many POV's and expressing everyone's emotions is a great deal of work and to add this book has the most revelations, events that are very important to the series and which makes sense to the story. So far the most capturing books of 3..

Ari is working her way with guild with jai and wants to prove herself after being attacked by number of Jinns who want to captivate her for her power....but life's not easy and jinn kings are not easy on her..secrets ,betrayals, broken trusts, broken hearts..what not Ari has to face along with the darkness that's now consuming herself in the form of seal. One thing of all which i loved too much was Jai and Ari's love and how they for each other no matter what!

I totally loved reading this book..i think the best part was none of it was happened which i think it would ..the seal,Sala,Red king,Jai,Lilif,
Asomedus,Charlie..everything was a surprise for me when i read it making it suspenseful and keeping me on edge all night while i was reading thinking what will happen next now?.

The end..the cliff hanger..never thought of it..waiting for the next book eagerly to see how will Ari n Jai deal with this..

Sam..hat's off..U always bring the best out of urself and this sure has hit the mark!

OMG Samantha Young is killing me!! I was SO busy and for days I longed to read this book but alas, life had other plans for me. I finally got some free time to start reading again and boy was this an amazing book to kick start my reading slump! The suspense throughout this entire book was ridiculous (in a good way) and I had such a hard time putting it down to take care of the smallest things... (kids, puppy, house... etc). I can NOT wait for the next installment! :( Even though I'm THRILLED that Jai and Ari are finally together, I still couldn't get enough of them and can't wait for that happy ending they both deserve! I'm so anxious about the next book, I wonder what will happen with Charlie?!! The awesome thing about this book was that you couldn't predict what would happen at any point. All the Jinn kings are so cunning with their own motives for their actions, so I never knew who would do what and why. I absolutely can't wait for the next book to come out!! I've said it before and I'll say it again, Samantha Young is seriously talented and is a brilliant writer! If you haven't read her books yet, buy them now!! 5 massive, ginormous stars!!!!!

Borrowed Ember caught me off guard. The first part focused on Ari’s and Jai’s relationship (scorching!) and just when I started wondering if the author knew where she was going, the overall story arc coalesced and the tale became darker, full of loss, disappointment, grief and heartache.

I was shocked by some developments that didn’t turn out as I thought, specially with Charlie. I don’t want to give you spoilers, but just know that in this book he shows his priorities and what kind of man he really is.

I loved the relationship between Ari and Jai, how they understood and supported one another. Ari seemed too mature and understanding of Jai’s foibles at times, but then she’s had to grow fast so it’s not completely outside her character. They were also so hot together! Nothing explicit happens – this is YA after all – but what there was, was scorching. *fans self*

The book ended with a terrible choice for Ari so the reader is sure that whatever follows in the next book will bring her a lot of pain. At least we won’t have to wait too long to find out.

Borrowed Ember (Fire Spirits #3) by Samantha Young

I seriously love this series of books. I was hooked with Smokeless Fire and read it in under a day, and when Scorched Skies delved further into the Jinn world I was captivated, but I think Borrowed Ember so far has to be my favorite out of the three. Why? Four reasons with a big, huge, ginormous emphasis on reason number three.

One, I love Mount Qaf and everything to do with the Jinn world and in this book Samantha Young really dives into that world. We learn all about Lilif and a lot of the questions that carried over from the first two books were answered here. Two, we meet Ari’s Mom! I love Sala. I had a feeling she was Miss Maggie or maybe they told us she was in another book, I can’t remember, but either way it was nice that Ari got to see her.

Three, Aria and Jai are a COUPLE! Yes, yes I know that was sort of decided at the end of the last book, but here we get to see it! I think they work so well together because neither one of them are perfect. They have flaws and this isn’t some kind of kiddie love, it’s the real thing. You have no idea how excited I was. Four, we got to learn more about Jai and what his life was like when he was younger, so sad. Sensing a pattern yet? Jai might be one of my favorite male characters, like ever.

Despite my Jai love, and trust me there’s a lot of it, there’s more to this story than just that. The great thing about the author of this book is that she’s developed this amazing world with characters that you can’t help but love because she does such a good job of getting inside their heads and showing you what they are feeling and why they do things. There’s nothing better than being able to relate to the main characters in a book, to feel like you’re taking their journey with them and this series does that.

I found myself constantly on the edge of my seat when learning more about the different Jinn Kings, Sultan Azazil, and of course Jai. All of the characters are so intricately entwined that it drives me crazy, but in a good way. I need to know what happens, it’s literally almost as bad as my coffee addiction and that’s a compliment.

I love Trey and his unwavering loyalty to Jai and Ari. He is seriously one of the most dynamic characters I’ve ever read. He’s like this burst of comedic relief when everything gets all intense, but at the same time he’s got this serious, very intense side that I love too. He is my third favorite right behind Jai and Ari.

I was pretty much devastated when and if I didn’t dislike Charlie before this would have done it, or one of the many other things he’s done over the course of three books. It takes a good author to make you love a character, but it takes a great author to make you hate one as much as I hate Charlie. He doesn’t deserve Ari or her friendship and I get it, he holds a place in her heart that will most likely always be there, but every time he does something stupid I want to junk punch him. [Watch What Happens in Vegas for that reference.]

Anyway, enough about Charlie because he bugs me, another thing I love about this series is the villains. Samantha Young writes great villains because they aren’t just villains they’re people. They are multifaceted characters and not just all ‘Grr arrg’. They have a purpose, a past, a history and their choices, and who they’re loyal to define what side they are on in the moment. And I love that. I love that the Red King is playing both sides, not because he doesn’t care about Ari, but because he’s loyal to his Father. I love that Lilif wasn’t always this power hungry being, but the darker half to Asmodeus’s light.

I seriously love this entire seriously of books and I am anxiously waiting for the fourth installment to come out and when I say anxiously I mean I keep checking back at Young’s website to see if the date has changed because I need it now!

Samantha never ceases to blow me away with her lore, her twists, and the constant action that happens through out her stories. She's able to keep thrills at every turn, break your heart at times, and yet still make you smile while reading. I love this series!

*spoilers for books 1 & 2*

Borrowed Ember starts off where we left off in Scorched Skies, Charlie is on Mount Qaf awaiting his trial, that could very well end badly. Ari and Jai have finally given in are trying at a relationship... under wraps of course. But, Ari is still the seal and the Jinn Kings and fate still have dangerous secrets that she could have never imagined. Secrets that will change her whole life. Other than all those problems, she decided to do something for herself. She along with Jai and Charlie decide to re-join the Roe Guild and be hunters instead of the hunted. Ari's definitely got her hands full and fate is never quite kind to her.

With Borrowed Ember, I was so happy where some relations went and then so "oh my god, no!" with others. Ari, I am so proud of in this installment. She has to constantly make extremely tough decisions between loved ones, and based on everything happening, I believe she made the right ones. Ari also "looses" a lot of people in Borrowed Ember and her strength through it all is impressive. I do not envy her... unless she's making out with a certain sexy boy, then I do envy her.

Then there is the fabulous parade of amazing boys she gives us. Lets start with Trey, since I love him to pieces. I was SO happy that not only did he return in this installment, but he actually had a pretty decent role. I love everything about his playful personality. There's also Charlie, whom I've always loved since book one because of his brokenness and his love that I know is some where deep in him. Charlie was very intriguing in Borrowed Ember though. There were so many moments where I thought he might finally change, finally become the friend Ari always knew and loved, but Charlie was just slowly spiraling farther down. Finally, there's Jai. OH JAI you sexy thing you. I was so happy to watch Jai crack open in this story. Things are finally seeming to fall in place for him and I was loving every bit of it.

Also, does anyone else think these books would make an excellent TV series? I do! I do!! So much happens in each book and I could see this series making one thrilling TV series. That being said I love this series. I love Ari, Jai, Charlie, TREY, and the whole gang. Samantha always keep me turning the pages and wanting more. Cannot wait for Darkness Kindled!

Dear Samantha Young,

I just want to say that for one day, and one day only, I would love to be inside your head. The stories that you come up with are just … beyond fantastic! You really know how to entertain your readers and keep them coming back for more!

Dear GCReaders,

If you haven’t picked up a book by Samantha Young, let me tell you, YOU ARE MISSING OUT! I am making my way down a list of all her books and so far NOT ONE has left me disappointed. I am still amazed at how good this author writes and the stories she can tell. I was so invested in the story of Ari and her world that for three days straight I read book one, two, and three. I literally locked myself in this house and did not stop reading them back to back. I loved it!

Let me tell you what I loved most about Borrowed Ember. The growth of the characters and the way they fell right into their skin. The first book I have to admit, I wasn’t a big fan of Ari. She sort of bugged me and about two times I thought about putting the book down. I didn’t, and only because I knew Samantha Young had something up her sleeve. I knew I wasn’t going to be let down. I am so happy I ended up continuing it. They really grow throughout the entire series and I love how Young can really take her readers by surprise. She does not hold back and there is no limit in her worlds.

For those who aren’t familiar with this series, The Fire Spirits series pulls you into a world of The Jinn a.k.a Genies. This was so refreshing for me and I think that also added to why I love this series so much. It’s different, entertaining, and unique. The characters are very believable and everything runs at a very smooth pace. You get just enough in every chapter.

There was one little issue I had with the book and it was just one event that took place that left me wondering Why go through all that, if it were that easy to take it away? I guess you will just have to read to find out what I am talking about. I highly recommend this series, and all other books by Samantha Young.

4.5 Out 5 stars!

OMG!Samantha Young, you sure caught me well with this series! Amazing!

I am so involved in the Jinn world and in everything that happens in Ari and Jai's lives that I barely think about something else xD Obsessed much xD
So, of course that I loved this book as well. *grins* :D
It was so amazing to see Ari being faced with tough choices and really heartbreaking situations, yet seeing her fighting and carrying on...
I really wish I had her strength! :)
And I loved the way her relationship with Jai developped! +.+ So freaking hot! OMG! I'm in love with Jai! +.+
He is the exact kind of hero that I love - damaged, battle-scarred, vulnerable yet desperately hiding it, fighting for love and acceptance. *sigh*

I always thought that the way he loved and lusted for Ari was dreamy but now that they are, in fact, together, everything is way more romantic! +.+
Moving on, I was so intrigued by Ari's dark side - the moments when the Seal could take over Ari's body and control her.
It was so interesting to see someone as good and pure as Ari to be tempted by the dark side and see her reaction to the effect of that darkness on her.
Well, I'm not going to say much more because I don't want to spoil things for you but seriously, you should read this entire series.
I can't wait for Darkness, Kindled! :D

Another amazingly fantastic book by Samantha Young, she never disappoints. I absolutely love the story between Jai and Ari. In this installment Jai and Ari actually profess their love to one another and their relationship moves to the next level of hotness. But along with new found love their is also many deaths that tug at your heart strings as you read this book. I was absolutely shocked to learn that Ms. Maggy was Ari's mom and was always with her to protect her no matter what the consequences, even her death in the end. Also in this installment Charlie becomes even more obsessed with avenging his brother's death and it costs him his friends and his new girlfriend who was also killed in the process. This book was so awesome I couldn't but it down, and as always left me wanting more. So two thumbs way way up for Borrowed Ember!

Well written, well rounded book! Plus if you've read the first two you must read this one! Romance + lots of magic + complete Jinn world = great read.

The author has included tons of details about all the different characters, Jinn lore, etc. I absolutely love the titles of the chapters!

Unfortunately for me I totally thought this was the last book in the series, so when I came to about 90% completion I was really freaking out. BUT, the good news is I love Ms. Young's books and I cannot get enough of Ari, Jai, and Charlie (and the rest of the characters).

This book was edgier than the previous two, and more emotional for me. The game has definitely changed and I can't wait to find out more!

The only negative I found was one typo! Great job editing.

Definitely liked it. I'm still pretty anti-Charlie and this book certainly didn't change that. I'm glad we got to see more about Asmodeus and I can't wait to see what role he plays in this. Pretty excited for the next book!

I’ve read almost all of Samantha Young’s books. I’ve noticed that in all of her series, Sam (can I call you Sam?) has this insanely frustrating habit of giving me just enough to whet my appetite, to keep me going. Then I get to the end of the book and I want to throw my Kindle across the room because it’s never enough. I always want to know what happens next RIGHT NOW, not when the next book comes out. This is the main reason why she’s on my auto-buy list and I’ll pretty much read anything she writes.

In Scorched Skies (review), we leave off with Ari and Jai rushing to Mount Qaf to save Charlie. A common theme in this series. Charlie is on trial for killing a half-blood royal, and while he had good reasons for doing so, the Jinn are a stubborn people. Charlie barely scrapes out of the trial with his life intact, and he, Ari and Jai leave the treacherous environment of Mount Qaf at the first opportunity. After the events at the end of Scorched Skies, Ari decides she is tired of being a victim. She wants to become the hunter, instead of the hunted. They all head back to the Roe’s, the Guild that harbored them in the previous book. Ari immediately begins training with Jai and Fallon, while Charlie hides himself away to do mysterious revenge things with another Guild hunter, Jack.

At the Guild home, Ari and Jai experience a few weeks of peace for the first time in months. But the vultures are ever circling, just waiting for the perfect opportunity for Ari to slip up so they can forcibly bring her back to Mount Qaf for good. As the days wear on, Ari struggles to contain the Seal’s power within her, and it’s starting to change her. It’s getting harder to control, especially when it comes to any threats regarding Jai. They’ve been forced to keep their relationship a secret, but the White King’s spies have discovered the truth and Ari’s evil father devises a plan to kidnap Jai, hoping to force Ari to his side and under his thumb.

Ari runs to Azazil, where she learns the truth about the Seal and why it’s trying to take control of her body. Ari finally realizes that the balance must be maintained, and that she is not strong enough to hold the Seal. She must decide between her own life, or those of the people she loves.

Where Scorched Skies was heavy on the action, Borrowed Ember was a bit slower paced. We learn a lot more in this book about the Jinn world, Ari and the Seal, Azazil’s motives, the White King’s motives, who Ms. Maggie really is, what Asmodeus wants, and whether or not the Red King would choose between Ari or his loyalty to his father. A lot of secrets are revealed, some that are devastating, and some that bring relief and comfort.

I found myself wishing for some more gumption from Ari. She was firm in her desire to train and learn how to use her powers, but when she was put in a situation where she could actually fight, she sort of froze up and someone always showed up in the nick of time to save her. I hope that we see more growth with her character in the next book. I don’t need her to be Wonder Woman, but I’d like her to be able to stand up for herself, and even more, believe in herself. I really admire Ari’s loyalty to her friends and family. She always puts them first, but sometimes that makes her a little TSTL, and she is so much better than that. I hope that in the future we see her embrace the world she was violently thrust into, but can no longer avoid. She wants so badly to be normal, but I’d like to see her make a new normal with the life she now has. I want her to fight alongside Jai, not be okay with him pushing her behind him when they’re backed into a corner.

Jai is devastatingly handsome and sexy, as always. If there’s one thing Sam does well, it’s her heroes. He’s a perfect blend of vulnerability and strength, and he loves Ari so much. It was so hard to read about their difficulties in keeping their relationship a secret, when he just wanted to shout to the world that Ari was his and no one was to mess with her.

I hate Charlie. I’ve never liked him, but I tried to at least tolerate him for Ari’s sake. What he did in this book pushed me right over the edge from tolerating deep into loathing territory. I kept yelling at Ari to just give him up. He’s clearly made his choice to pursue this ridiculous revenge of his without regard to anyone else, and it annoyed me that she kept wanting to save him. And the end.. HOLY COW the end. Sam, you killed me. Seriously. What went down in the hotel AND Ms. Maggie? Was that absolutely necessary? SOB.

My Summary: I’ve always been intrigued with this series, but now I desperately want to know where it’s going from here. My mind is filled with questions about what’s going to happen next, and I can’t get the story out of my head. Ari and Jai are one of my most favorite YA couples, and I hope they have some time in the next book to just be. I love the action, but I also love the moments where they can be together and enjoy each other’s company. I’m hoping they can go on a regular date or something. (Wink, wink ) I highly recommend this series, and if you haven’t read it, start with Fire Spirits. I promise you’ll love ‘em just as much as I do.

My Rating: A

The third book in Samantha Young’s Seven Kings of Jinn series, this book was originally published as Borrowed Ember (Fire Spirits, #3), but like the others in the series, it’s been re-edited and re-released, and it’s a really exciting instalment in the series.

I can’t say much about the story without being spoilery, but Ari’s story continues as we catch up with her, Jai and Charlie as they face up to the consequences of Charlie’s actions, and then finally get the chance to settle into something that looks a little bit like normal – well, a new normal training and working with the Guild to hunt down rogue jinn.

But every challenge they face threatens to unleash the darkness inside of Ari that she is only just beginning to understand. Similarly, Charlie is coming in to his own and starting to realise all that he is capable of, but he’s still wrestling with his feelings, and is starting to lose himself to his quest for vengeance.

And to the excitement of romance fans everywhere, we finally get some movement on the Ari/Jai situation! Yes, feelings have been acknowledged and are being confessed, and it’s gorgeously swoony and emotional as they finally find their way to each other.

“I’ll only ever belong to you If you want me, I’ll belong to you forever.”

“You’re everything,” he admitted, his words ragged with feeling. “You know that, right?”

The story continues to twist and turn, and as secrets are revealed and the powerful jinn begin to make their moves, everything changes and the direction of the series shifts again. Our brave trio find themselves facing danger, betrayal, vengeance, death and loss, and there are a lot of shocks and surprises along the way. It’s an emotional rollercoaster, and I was holding my breath more than once as it all unfolded.

It's been a wild ride already, and I know there is more in store, and I can’t wait to see how the series will finish in the next book.

3.5 stars.

“Yeah, I only have three expressions. Blank. Pissed off. And polite boredom.”

Jai, you never bore me at all!! Lol!

Awww so that's why i kept on reading this very slooowly! It's not just because it's a total cliffhanger, it's also because I'm gonna be soooo sad!

Two topics. I have two topics that i want to discuss. Both of them have 2 stars each.

First topic is: sadness.
Yes. Sadness! Sadness in this book is very much related to fear. Because of fear, there is sadness.
Jai's fear, he is scared because he doesn't know how to accept loving Ari. Oh yes, he's in love with her, hands down! But he doesn't know how to say it. He's scared because he couldn't give the right reaction or he doesn't know how to just let himself go and embrace that admission of love. Every time he thinks about it, it makes him sad and remembers the cruelty of his family's words and actions when he was growing up. He couldn't let himself believe that someone or that Ari is capable of loving him with all her heart. It's sad because he is so broken and it's sad because he's sort of hurting her also.

Charlie's fear, he's fear is losing himself to power. In the end that addiction won and i really hate Charlie for it. Yes, he thinks it's justice and revenge, killing his brother's murderer but with the way he wants revenge only increases his way to his doom. Because of this revenge and fear of not being able to avenge his brother's death he was able to lose all the people that he loves. One of them is Ari. It's very sad because he was able to start from loving Ari and ending up in losing her. Not because Ari doesn't love him back but because of his own power-thirst. I really like Charlie!!!! I was even jealous with a certain female-Guild! Awwww!

Ari's fear is losing the people she loves and being taken over by the Seal.
"But Jai… I would die a hundred deaths to save you…because the thought of being here without you now, the thought of losing you… is unimaginable."
What's sad about this is that Ari did lose people like Sala and Fallon. Her mother and her friend. She almost lost Jai too. The Seal was scary! It's sad because every time it controls her, she feels like people don't want to be with her. And it's really a big issue for her because she always feel like people don't love her enough.

Next topic with 2 stars:

“I love you. Okay? I love you. You’re not alone.”

LOVE. What else right?

This book makes me melt with all the sweetness and mushy stuff in it!

Ari and Jai. Finally!
These two are the perfect lovebirds! I love them!
Ari never gave up.
"All I know is that there are all these people who think I belong to them. And the truth is, Jai, I’ll only ever belong to you. If you want me, I’ll belong to you forever.”
Even though Jai is being indifferent with her she still clings to him seeking comfort. She's very patient with him and she treats him like he's fragile( which he probably is) yeah! She understands him better like no other could. Best thing about this is he really needs it. Jai needs someone like Ari. And it's so perfect that he also fell in love with her. *sings Need You Now by Lady Antebellum*
He might be afraid of the relationship he has with Ari but he was still able to let himself embrace it in the end.
“I’ll always want you,” he whispered urgently against her lips. “You’re mine now, okay. Only mine.”
These two are totally in love and crazy for each other. Ari proved her love for Jai by always i mean always choosing or putting him first. Jai proved his love for her by standing by her while his father asked him to choose.

Love of Charlie. Yes Charlie still loves Ari, but that love was tainted by his hunger for power. That's very bad because he drowned in it and he forgot all about the good things. Awwww. I don't know what to say but pity.

"No one has ever looked at me the way you do. It’s humbling… to have someone like you look at someone like me that way.

Love. Red is in love with the ifrit. Now she's also gone. I hate White because I really thought he loved Ari. Asmodeus really love his sister Lilif. Trey and a Jinn king is getting mushy. Lol. Fallon loved Charlie... :(

Another star? What could be that for....
Jai's hotness?
Ari's loyalty and pureness?
Charlie's stupidity?
I think by just thinking about these stuff is worth another star? Don't you think? Lol!

I cannot wait for the 4th book!!!!! Coming out this November!!!!!

First of all, I just want to say...

WOW!!!

Samantha Young has this way of creating worlds that suck you in completely and spit you back out when the book is over. I became so engrossed in the Jinn world that I lost a few hours of sleep, but it was totally worth it!

I read the first book, Smokeless Fire, a while ago and when the second book came out, I completely forgot what the first one was about. So I didn't read it until a few days ago and I am so glad I did! Once I finished Scorched Skies I couldn't wait to get my hands on Borrowed Ember.

So where do I begin with this... There were many "OH MY GOD" moments and there were times where I felt the emotions of the characters so intensely that I actually got chills... and that's never happened. Ari definitely went through a lot in this book, but then her life has been a roller coaster since book one.

This book definitely tested her boundaries, and with The Seal trying to take over her body, it only added to her stress. But Ari is badass and remained strong in spite of it all. She just never stopped and even though she came close to death on a couple occasions, she got right back up and kept kicking ass.

As for the men in Ari's life...

Jai: Can you say swooooooon?! He's the perfect heroin. He's hot. He's tortured. He's loyal. He can kick ass. And he can make your toes curl. He's go it all and Ari is one lucky gal! It definitely got steamy between them in this book and I was very happy for that ;)

Charlie: Oh boy. He's like that friend who's addicted to drugs that you want to send to rehab, but is there a rehab for addiction to magic? In a way, I could understand his need for revenge, but he didn't need that to consume him and therefore not care what happened to his friends. He needs serious help and I hope he gets some kind of happy ending in the next book, or whenever the series ends.

The Jinn Kings: My, my, my. Who can you trust? Who's really the bad guy? I like how there isn't a true villain in this series. Plus I like how Samantha went into more depth with them, to really see what their intentions are for the cruel things they do, instead of just being evil for no reason. That what's makes a great villain. It definitely keeps you on your toes!

So overall, Borrowed Ember was AMAZING!! I thought this was the last book in the series and so what a surprise I received when I was left with a cliffhanger at the end! I cannot wait for the 4th book to come out this November!!

Where to start with this book. . . Ok, here goes. With charlie's trial pending, for killing the one who kidnapped & tortured Ari, she feels bad for being happy that she & Jai are finally together; even though they got to keep it secret from public until things settle down some. Meanwhile the White Jinn King, her father still plans to use her power of the Seal to get something from Azazil, his Father & Ari's grandfather - yup, it’s a bit confusing keeping track of who's whose father. But The White King surprises Ari by saving Charlie from punishable death by speaking on his behalf. Ari feels she needs to be doing something instead of just sitting and waiting on other Jinn to come hunting for her, so she decides she wants to become part of the Guild; those who hunt & punish rogue Jinn. Still trying to figure out if she should truly & really trust Red, her uncle; but figures she has no choice in her situation with everyone else knowing who she is: White's daughter. (Not that she’s got the power of the seal in her, but won’t be for too long). Also, Azazil taking a special liking & interest in Ari makes Red suspicious of the intentions behind it. (I think it’s got something to do with Lilif & her essence having been taken from her and put into something. . .or someone?).

I wasnt expecting to find that Red had actually loved Sala, Ari’s mom, but not too surprised to find out Ms. Maggie’s true edentity. Oh! And FINALLY Jai admits, OUT LOUD, that he loves Ari; but someone’s been spying for Glass on Ari & Jai and heard the whole declaration. Glass uses this info & tells White so he can use Jai to capture Ari once again. So, yep, Jai is captured & Ari has no choice but to go willingly to the White King and do whatever he needs from her so she can save Jai. Asmodeous takes the ‘Seal’ from her in a non-too-gently way, and she almost died if it wasn’t for Red who came to help her with a healer. While she’s been in Mount Qaf, Charlie was given info on where to find the Labartu that killed his brother Mikey, so he goes after it. As much as Ari wants to go help Charlie, she also needs to go find Jai. Word of Charlie’s whereabouts is informed to the Roes and Fallon goes to Charlie to help him out. Ari goes to find Jai and save him. I loved how Jai stood up to his father once and for all, and that the love between Jai & Ari has only gotten stronger throughout the story. I don’t want to give more than I’ve already may have given away, but I’ll just say that Ari is definitely a strong person and seems to keep her wits about her; with everything that happens, and has happened to her in the past since learning what she is…she is one tough cookie!! And I believe she will definitely need to be her strongest for the next book, more than ever. She’ll be facing her toughest challenge yet…!!! And I can’t wait to read it. Samatha, please hurry up on the next one!! =)

Oh my gosh I love Jai so much. This book was simply amazing just like the others before it. I have really been enjoying every moment. Well... actually in this book I was always kinda disappointed when the tracks would switch back to Charlie and whatever he was doing or thinking about. Not that it was boring or that I hated it (because that isn't the case) I am just tired of Charlie being stupid Charlie and I'd rather read about Jai and Ari than Charlie and Fallon. Come on, wouldn't you too? I really have no interest in reading about Charlie and Fallon or Charlie and Mikey or Charlie and Ari. I just want Charlie to go away forever so I can just read about Jai all day long. I take that back, a little, because I also love to read about the Jinn Kings, Red in particular. They really are all fascinating and the plot really never stops, it just keeps moving faster and faster which is what I love.

But seriously, Charlie just needs to go bye bye because I do not want to hear about him and his struggles anymore. If he can't get himself under control then he just needs to go because I just want to hear about all my favorite characters. I think that actually all the characters besides Charlie are my favorites. They are just all so different and mysterious that I love them. Ari, Jai, Trey, The Glass King, Red, White, Lilith, Sala, ASMODEUS! I guess those are my main favorites. Asmodeus really is an exciting character that I am looking forward to meeting again in the next book. Even though he can be really creepy, I am interested on his whole past history as well as what's going on in that head of his. I'd really like to get to know him even better because he is still such a mystery.

And why is it that Charlie is always messing things up so bad that at the ending of each book we are left with thoughts of him. In Smokeless Fire the book ended with Charlie being a stupid sorcerer. In Scorched Skies it ends with Charlie getting his butt dragged to Mount Qaf to face a trial for killing Dali. And now this book again ends with Charlie. Arg! Can the next book end with someone else for a change? Like Red getting in trouble with his father? Or Asmodeus finding a way to bring back his sister or something? I'm not asking for a happy ending at the end of every book (I don't want a happy ending at the end of each book). No. What I am asking for is for the drama to be centered around someone else for a change. Please and thank you.

And now let's all take a collected sigh as we think about that dreamy Jai. Ah. I am glad that Ari is no longer fighting the Seal and its darkness. I was afraid she'd go all pyscho and then Jai would be all alone.

Borrowed Ember: As good as the first 2 books in the series and I am dreading reading the fourth as it is all coming to and end and I know that I will miss these books and these characters for a very long time after.

Ari is determined to be a hunter and not the weak prey she has been in the other books. She learns more about herself and what she is capable of, but like everything there is a light and a dark, a good and an evil and her powers are no different.

Having the power of the Seal of Solomon and the ability to command all Jinn comes with high prices and responibility and Ari tries her best not to use it unless she has to, but something dark inside her whispers in her head to take control of everyone, everything. This powerful voice comes when she feels threatened, when those around her are hurt and Ari must control it before it controls her.

Jai comes to life in this book as well. He admits his love for Ari, though it is hard for him as he was abused when he was younger, felt unloved by his father and beaten mercilessly by his family and tribe on many occasions, blamed for something his mother did. It has taken him a long time to accept his emotions and the author does it very well, showing us his anguish easing over time all because Ari loves him unconditionally. Charlie is still hell bent on his revenge and vows to kill the jinn who murdered his younger brother, even if it means pushing away those he loves and maybe getting killed in the process. This boy, who was once addicted to drugs, alcahol and easy girls is now addicted to the power of his magic. It consumes eveything, even though he thinks that Ari is his true love, he cant seem to put her first and finds himself in a whole lot of trouble towards the end of this book. Even when he meets the new girl Fallon, who he grows to care about, he still cant seem to push away his addictions.

One of the little treasures in this book is the addition of Trey who was only touched upon in the other books. His loyalty to Jai is endearing, his own set of problems makes your heart ache for him. Being gay in his life is difficult, keeping the secret is becoming harder and it would kill his dad to find out. Trey, although we have not seen the world from his POV, is yet another character I care about in this series.

The ending was fantastic and it keeps you needing more, wanting to know what will happen because the author has a great way of leaving nail biting cliff hangers and this one is no different!! I have to read the next book, I have to find out what happens to Charlie, Ari and Jai, even if it means the series is coming to an end...

This is definitely my favorite series by Samantha Young. I think these books just keep getting better and better. I'm also madly in love with Jai and Ari. There relationship is so tender and sweet. It's not a total lust-fest like some of the YA books lean towards.

Ari is the Seal and it is slowly taking over her. It is a malevolent force within that Ari is just barely keeping in check. Jai and Ari are trying to keep their budding relationship under wraps so the Jinn can't use it against Ari. Charlie is still mega-obsessed with finding his brother's killer, but it might destroy him and if he kills a Jinn he will face capital punishment. Red is trying desperately to play both sides - appease his Father and keep Ari safe.

*SPOILER AHEAD* (I put this in here to help me remember for when I read the next book)

White steals Jai and Ari is forced to go to Azeal and beg his help. Azeal says that he will keep Jai and Charlie safe if Ari will stay with him indefinitely. Ari agrees. She will do anything to keep Jai safe. They find that the Seal is actually Lilif's essence and it is trying to dominate Ari. They end up ripping the Seal out of Ari and she nearly dies, but Red comes in time to save her. Lilif's brother possesses the Seal now but it doesn't work on Ari and that makes him furious.

Ari goes to save Jai, who is trapped in a bottle at his Father's house. White is waiting for her there and nearly kills Ari, but Sala, Ari's mom, steps in and White kills her instead. Red tries not to blame Ari for the death of Sala, whom he loved. Jai breaks off all ties with his family.

Meanwhile...Charlie and Fallon are going after the beast that killed Charlie's little bro. Fallon ends up dying. Charlie kills the jinn, then disappears. He is completely overcome by the power of the emeralds. Jai, Ari and Trey (who is having a little fling with Glass) stay with the Roes and join the guild. There first assignment is to kill Charlie.

And that's how it all ends. Really can't wait for the next one!!!

This carries much of the same beautifully written prose that I like so much. Her descriptions are different and not cliché. “The winter sun began to play peek-a-boo over the mountains, the emeralds waking up under its playful gaze.”; “Jai rarely laughed and when he did it felt as if she’d dipped her toes into the warmest, most soothing bath ever.”; “. . . and into his body—little spiders of virulent energy aiming for his heart.” Her dynamic verb usage of wink, blink and wringing were clever. I really read this book for the language, although the story does seduce me through.

As for the storyline, Ari seems to be growing very mature with all the doom and loom in her life. She has lost so much and yet, still pilots through, trying to save the people she loves. I wonder how much more she can take, though? She seems almost numb already with everything that has happened. And, how can she not be? What else horrid could possibly go wrong?

I love the turn of events with Charlie. You can see how his vengeance and power lust is actually transforming him into something other than himself.

The one aspect of the book I’m not totally enraptured with is the love between Ari and Jai. I don’t know. It doesn’t feel like that all-consuming love that dares to suffocate and build you to a point when your whole body is tingling, spouting over-joyed emotion; the kind of love that makes your soul lift out of the body just to be with that other soul; that stops and stills your breath; as a reader anyway. I don’t know. It might just be me. Twilight seemed to do that to me, but now I’m wondering why? And, how did she do that?

I’m going to read it again and get back to you.

I absolutely LOVE this series! Each installment draws me in further and further. I get more and more attached to these characters, especially Ari and Jai. Aw, Jai! *fanning self* If only men in the real world had growth like this one. We'd all be a whole lot happier. Just sayin, guys.
Anyway...Sam wastes no time throwing us back into the action of the Fire Spirits. We meet up with Ali right where we left off. With everything up in the air and everyone's life at stake. This book has you on the edge of your seat the entire time. I couldn't read it in (or two) sittings and man, I just really didn't want to stop reading until I reached the end, but alas life calls sometimes and you have no choice. That's not to say I didn't whine and complain. I. Did. Not. Want. To. Put. It. Down. So much happens in Borrowed Ember. Much of it heartbreaking and somewhat astonishing...Sam does not back away from tradedy and I think she may even enjoy torturing us as well as her characters. But there is also some serious romance here. And it's HAWT! And heartwarming. And...well, yeah, it's good. And a little bromance. Yay, TREY!
So, needless to say it's another roller coaster ride. I laughed. I cried. I got angry, screamed and cheered. It was emotional, full of action, surprises and revelations. And I loved every word of it. I just can't wait to see what's in store in Darkness, Kindled.

Wow! Each book in the 'Fire Spirits' series has ended with a cliffhanger; but, "Borrowed Ember" ends with a doozie. Ari and Jai have finally come to gripes with their feelings for each other but realize it is best kept secret. They go to one of the guilds where Charlie is being trade by the sorcerer, Jack, while Ari will be trained by Jai and Fallon, a young guild member.

Meanwhile Charlie is beginning to accept that Jai and Ari are becoming closer and he no longer has a chance. As a matter if fact, he and Fallon are quickly becoming more and more attracted to each other. Together this group will learn to hone their skills all while being tested beyond any crisis they have encountered to date. Secrets will be revealed, betrayals will be uncovered, and many will not make it out of these challenges alive.

I loved the action and all of the subplots. I especially enjoyed learning more about Charlie and his brother, Mike. It was also interesting to read how Azazil and his sons, the Jinn kings uncaringly moved humans around as if they are expendable chess pieces in a game of life and death all for their petty amusements. Of all of the books to date, this was the best one yet. It was an emotional ride that leaves the reader breathless and wanting more. I cannot wait for book 4!
