The Missing Branch: A Gripping DNA Genealogy Mystery Thriller

Rate this book
She finds missing ancestors for a living. She never expected to find herself.

Forensic genealogist Clara Voss has spent her career reconstructing families from fragments — census records, DNA matches, letters, and the silences between them. She is extraordinary at finding other people's truths. Her own, she has learned to leave alone.

Then Margaret Ashford walks into Clara's Richmond office with a photograph taken in 1938. A family stands in front of a farmhouse — everyone smiling, everyone present — except for one man at the left edge of the frame who has been erased from every official record for eighty years. His name, written in pencil on the E. Crane, 1938.

The search for Elias Crane begins as a routine ancestry inquiry. Within a week, it becomes a murder investigation. Within two weeks, it becomes personal in a way Clara never anticipated — because the missing man's family name is her family name. And the secrets that buried Elias Crane for eighty years may be the same secrets that made Clara's mother disappear when Clara was four years old.

The Missing Branch is a propulsive genealogical mystery that teaches real research methods — DNA analysis, census records, probate files, the Leeds Method — while delivering the kind of story that makes sleep optional. Every chapter ends with a reason to keep reading. Every discovery opens a door that cannot be closed.

Perfect for fans of The Thursday Murder Club, The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, and anyone who has ever wondered what a family photograph isn't showing them.

"The people we cannot find are always the ones who most needed to be found."

⭐ Book 1 of the Bloodline Files Series — a complete mystery with a devastating series hook that readers will not be able to put down.

I was excited to read this book because it was a DNA genealogy mystery. However, as I read, several glaring genealogical errors glared out. For example, the main mystery involved a man born in 1901 to a father born in 1893, which would make the father 8 years old when his son was born. I assumed that this was a typo, but then it was repeated multiple times. There were other errors too; connections that didn't make sense based on the bloodlines and centimorgans shared between characters. Honestly, the story itself was interesting, but the errors really bothered me. When I searched on the book, I found information that said that the book was written by AI. I therefore won't read any more books purportedly written by "Sophia Arden". AI-written books should be identified and not packaged to fool people.

An Outstanding Story!

I've done genealogical research for 65 years read a considerable number of genealogy related stories/mysteries and I find this to be the best. I served over thirty years in the Navy (Enlisted to Commander), worked as a Federal Investigator and did other work, during which I developed my research skills and took a couple of DNA tests with some interesting results. All of which enabled me to appreciate the author's abilities in writing this book. I highly recommend this story!

Genealogy in the real world

In a Genealogy textbook the contents are the techniques of research and documentation but in a fictional book, the contents demonstrate application of those techniques into a story form that maintains the readers attention. In this book Sophia Arden has managed to weave a story that combines the techniques demonstrating how they are used in a potential real life situation. If you have an interest in genealogy at all, this story will keep you glued to it. You are bound to learn more about DNA. Well written: quick read.

for those who can’t speak for themselves

I was given a 4 generation chart as a HS student by my mom. Over the years I have built it into a large mostly German family tree. Late in life I noticed that people wrote novels about forensic genealogy. I read a few. Watched a few in TV and was hooked. This one is brief and fun. It has a purpose which makes it even more compelling. You will be captured by the tension, the learning about the research, and the mission of the protagonist. Enjoy.

Easily read, extremely informative, written in an engaging style that kept me reading. I admit I was surprised so much was packed into such a compact book. Despite a couple of quibbles I really liked this book.
