The Weight of Rory

Rate this book
Kyle Porter's collection of thoughts, essays, tweets and more from on the grounds at Augusta National in April 2025 for one of the most historic Masters of all time.

It also includes Jason Page's world-class illustrations attempting to depict a golf week that none of us will ever forget.

The book includes new reflections in the aftermath of Rory's historic win as well as historic data, fresh images and footnote commentary on everything we got right and (mostly) everything we whiffed on.

The most epic journeys in history were made alone, and alone is often where the participants find themselves. Alone in the history books. Peerless. Without competitors. That is certainly where Rory is now. There are no modern comps. There are no European contenders. He is by himself in this era, and he has shown that to get to a place that no one else has gotten to, you must be willing to do some things -- to go through some stuff -- that no one else is willing to take on.

I'm a writer and a creator. Currently I cover golf for Normal Sport, which means a lot of different things depending on the day. Coverage of the modern game includes columns, podcasts some on-camera work and, of course, Twitter. It's the last of these that helped produce my books, Normal Sport 1, 2, 3 and -- more recently -- The Weight of Rory.

Golf, from my viewpoint, is so often a way to worship God. For an earth rich with unique contours and teeming with subtle beauty that I get to travel to and see so very often. And for a game that has been, from the very beginning, probably the most relational of any sport ever created. What good gifts those are, and how rarely do I consider them, much less praise God for their creation.

In the past I built and sold Pistols Firing, an Oklahoma State sports website, and contributed to Joy in the Sorrow -- How a Thriving Church (and its Pastor) Learned to Suffer Well.

I live in Richardson, Texas with my wife and four kids.

This is a compilation of Mr. porter’s columns, tweets, and other material about Rory McIlroy’s 2025 master’s win. If you are in to that kind of thing, it’s a fun and breezy read.

I enjoyed it like I would a good magazine. I wouldn’t say it’s a successful book about Rory McIlroy—rather it’s a successful book about Mr. Porter’s (and others’) experience of Rory. There are a few very good nuggets in here from both Mr. Porter and other journalists, and some decent insights on why sports matters to all of us who are fans.

When I finished, I’d wished there was a little bit more about the man who was the purported subject of the book, and, perhaps, one day, Mr. McIlroy will combine with Mr. Porter to write that book. (Something like the great Agassi auto-bio perhaps, would be great). But, for what it aims to be, the book is fun for golf fans to read and recommended.

The Weight of Rory is an excellent book for anyone who wants to feel the emotion and read phenomenal storytelling about one of the greatest accomplishments and greatest events in sports history.

I don’t know of many writers who write about and with the human side of sports better than Kyle Porter.

The book is creative, well designed, well illustrated (Jason!) and very well written. It got me emotional reliving the insane roller coaster of the back 9 on April 13, 2025.

Excellent book for anyone who loves golf, The Masters, or wants to enjoy a story of another human accomplishing what seemed to be the impossible.
