Angel R. Sánchez is a passionate storyteller who weaves mystery, adventure, and emotion into every page. Born in Bayamón, Puerto Rico, his love for ancient legends and stories of human resilience inspired him to dream of worlds where courage and hope defy the limits of the possible.
After publishing his first works in Spanish, Linajes (2014), the poetry collection Katharsis, and the anthology Coleccionando Cuentos, co-written with his best friend, Víctor L. Miranda, life took him on a long detour away from writing. For years, he stepped back from his passion, balancing work and family while carrying stories quietly within him.
In 2025, Angel returned to the page with renewed purpose, making his English-language debut with The Real Monster. This novel not only reignited his literary journey but also launched his shared horror universe, The Mortal Coil.
Through vivid storytelling and emotional depth, Ángel invites readers to cross invisible thresholds, confront the unknown, and discover pieces of themselves within each tale. His inspiration springs from everyday life, myths hidden in plain sight, and his firm belief that imagination knows no boundaries.
Above all, Angel is a husband and the proud father of an amazing autistic daughter. Beyond the books, he’s a regular guy who works as an industrial machine operator and, like so many others, does his best every day to keep his family strong and cared for.
Prepare to lose yourself in unforgettable adventures... and perhaps, to find yourself along the way.
Angel R. Sanchez is quickly becoming one of the best young authors in Horror today. His books hit you like a freight train in overdrive. The Mortal Coil Series and The Devil in I have become fast favorites of mine, and his new novella, Blackwood, part of the Echoes of the Forgotten Series of books is no different. I mean, it is totally different, but it is further proof of Angel's growth as an author and his ascendence in the genre. The Blackwood here is Mercy Blackwood, a woman burned at the stake for being a witch, and has cursed the future generations of the family responsible for this event. So now, cut to present day, and two sisters return to their hometown, the town where Mercy was burned, and find out that their parents held secrets about the burning of Mercy Blackwood. What enfolds then is a story of true horror, vengeance, and discovery that will have your head spinning. I won't say more, so as not to spoil things for you, but I will accept thanks from anyone who heeds my words and reads Blackwood because of this review. All jokes aside, if this story is any indication of the quality to be found it the Echoes of the Forgotten collection, coming June 12th, then i have 11 other books to add to the top of my TBR. Well done, Mr. Sanchez, well done!!
Sánchez did it again. With „Blackwood“, he proves that he is able to turn yet another horror subgenre into a vivid reading experience, complete with a few twists. This time, he takes on the Salem witch trials and plays with questions of guilt, innocence, religion, and revenge. One thing is clear: the burning of Mercy Blackwood in 1692 was not entirely what it seemed. Mercy’s calm expression while being consumed by the flames makes it clear that some witchcraft was involved. A bad omen.
The story itself is set in our time. Descendants of the Salem community investigate a dark secret after the death of their father. As usual, Sánchez’s work oozes atmosphere. I loved the arrival on the secluded Salem island and its sinister mood. As always, I enjoyed the quick, clear writing. The plotting is also solid, although a little too predictable at times. Furthermore, some very large things happen that push the suspension of disbelief to its limits.
It’s still a greatly entertaining read that works perfectly within the genre. In fact, it spices things up a bit, but always within the genre’s confines.
That’s the reason for my four stars, even though I genuinely enjoyed it. I hate giving star ratings. I believe it’s more about the target audience and expectations than some obscure measure of quality. „Blackwood“ can absolutely be a five-star book if this is the kind of story you’re looking for. Still, I don’t like giving everything five stars just to please the algorithm.
Being honest, while I deeply enjoyed this book and would gladly read it again, it is simply not as strong as „The Devil in I“ by the same author. It’s good—actually very good—but it doesn’t stand out enough to earn an honest five-star rating from me.
In any case, this was a great start to the „Echoes of the Forgotten“ series for me. Tiffany Royster managed to bring together twelve authors—including this book by Sánchez—to create what promises to be a truly chilling series. I can’t wait to see how the other books turn out. If they maintain this level of quality, the series will be a must-read. At least for me.

The books by Angel R. Sanchéz can be found on Amazon or, preferably, purchased through his own website (https://angelrsanchez.com). I received a digital ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.
Sisters return to Blackwood Hollow after the death of their father only to find out their bloodline has been cursed for centuries. Will they be able to break the curse or is this where their family bloodline ends?
There are many intense scenes throughout this book that kept me engaged. The imagery and details made me feel like I was in Blackwood Hollow.
Excellent paranormal horror story! Jess and Kathy sent off the island as kids have to return for their dad's funeral, and that's where things take a turn . In comes Mercy Blackwood , a jpurnal, lies, and the truth of a cursed bloodline. This story will have you gasping and guessing the whole read. Definitely wanna check this one out! Loved it.
First I would like to thank the author for letting me read this ARC copy of the book. Wow I came into this book blind and haven’t read anything by this author before. The setting is erie and it follows a story of Mercy Blackwood who was accused of witch craft. The action was well written and the creep factor is 10/10 for me. I will be sharing this read with all my book lovers and horror addicts.
Today I read “Echoes of the Forgotten: Blackwood” by author Angel R. Sanchez.
Jess and her sister Kathy are called back from the mainland to Blackwood Hollow. It’s a small island off the east coast of Salem, Massachusetts and is the place of their kin. Their legacy. Their father has died….and left secrets.
A 300 year old curse. Grief. Betrayal. Lies. Witchcraft. Hold on tight…this tale races, twists, and haunts into an end I did not see coming.
I’m all about a Salem witch book. Give them to me. Then add the complicated bonds of sisters, a small town, folklore, suspense and a creepy forest. Yep. I’m there. This book checks all the boxes. And more.
Definitely recommend this!
(This is my first read by author Sanchez. I purchased another book of his “The Devil in I” right after finishing this one. I’m a little nervous about it honestly..it looks like it gets under the skin and digs deep. It calls out to be read.)
I received an advanced reader copy from the author. This is my voluntary and honest review.
Echoes of the Forgotten Blackwood by Angel R. Sanchez is an engaging short novella that keeps readers hooked from beginning to end. Each chapter is gripping and encourages you to keep reading through its continuous twists and turns. The story is easy to follow, making it an accessible and enjoyable thriller for a wide range of readers. With its suspenseful plot and steady pace, it delivers an entertaining reading experience.
Wow.. what a book to keep you on edge! This book was such a good read and I couldn’t put it down!
The story is fantastic and you would never expect what would happen next. It will have you going through a lot of emotions…. I definitely have certain feelings now.
I can’t wait to read more of his books!!! You should read them too! Especially, this one!
Creatures, Curses and Cemeteries! Intense dread and eeriness abound as the author meticulously weaves a haunting tale of ancestral secrets, cursed bloodlines and 300 years of evil waiting. Well written, atmospheric and suspenseful. Immerse yourself in Blackwood Hollow but beware parts of you may never leave.

Favorite Line: “Mercy was not born a witch. We made her one.”
And honestly? A line like that is basically an automatic read-the-author-forever situation for me.
What Did I Just Walk Into? A cursed bloodline, a town drowning in secrets, nightmare fuel wrapped in folk horror vibes, and enough creepy atmosphere to make you side-eye every dark patch of woods for the next week. Blackwood Hollow feels like the kind of place where nobody should stop for gas, let alone move back to settle family affairs. Naturally, Jess and Kathy do exactly that.
Here’s What Slapped: This book understood the assignment. The setting is eerie as hell from the very beginning. The whole story carries this heavy, rotting feeling like the town itself is holding its breath waiting for something terrible to crawl out of the shadows. And honestly? It delivers.
Mercy Blackwood’s story lingers over everything like smoke that never clears. The curse storyline could have easily gone predictable, but the way the horror unfolds keeps escalating into increasingly unsettling territory. The nightmares, the visions, the family history, the things moving where they absolutely should not be moving… yeah, this one kept the tension high the entire time.
The imagery deserves serious credit because some scenes were so vivid I could practically smell the ash and decay. The gore and body horror moments hit hard without feeling thrown in just for shock value. There’s a brutal emotional layer underneath all the supernatural chaos that gives the story weight beyond just creepy visuals.
Also, this novella moves. There’s no wandering around waiting 200 pages for something spooky to happen. The horror kicks in early and keeps stomping on the gas.
What Could’ve Been Better: I honestly just wanted more time in Blackwood Hollow because this world was creepy enough to deserve an even longer stay. Which feels rude of me considering the town would absolutely kill me.
Perfect for Readers Who Love: Folk horror, cursed bloodlines, haunted towns, witches, grim family secrets, creepy forests, and horror that feels damp, smoky, and deeply wrong.

Title: Echoes of the Forgotten: Blackwood Author: Angel Sanchez Released date: 6/12/26 Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
“Blackwood,” part of the “Echoes of the Forgotten” series of novellas, centers on the legend of Mercy Blackwood, a woman accused of and executed for witchcraft. Mercy haunts Blackwood Hollow, a small island near Salem, Massachusetts and her legend is blamed for recent illnesses and earns.
Estranged sisters Jess and Kathy Saang return to Blackwood Hollow, their hometown, to attend their father’s funeral. Just prior to returning and immediately upon arrival to Blackwood Hollow, Jess begins to have dreams with Mercy in them and hears her name on the wind and see a dark figure in the woods. At the same, a series of supernatural events convince the locals that Jess and Kathy’s father’s death has inadvertently unleashed Mercy’s spirit. Taking place over a single day, Jess and Kathy must put aside their resentment and work with the locals to fight against the escalating nightmare.
I loved this novella. This is the first story I’ve read by Angel and it doesn’t disappoint. He is kind and eases us into the story with the introduction of Jess and Kathy. The reader learns about who they are as people, their personalities, and throughout the story, the history that caused their resentment to each other. After their introduction, Angel takes things up a notch, or ten. The story is propulsive, alternating scenes of high tension and unflinching brutality with scenes that are a little more calm. Just when you think things are going ok for the main characters, Angel yanks away that sense of comfort. The story begins to peak when the reader discovers the sad, and terrifying, truth of what happened before a chilling twist that will leave you thinking. I was tense throughout the story and stressed at times (both are good things) and finished this story in one sitting.
This is a must read, and I am excited to read more by Angel. I ready have The Devil In on KU.
**ARC Review** Author: Angel R. Sanchez Book: Echoes of the Forgotten: Blackwood Book Rating: 4 Stars Genre: Horror
I want to thank Angel for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I am really digging these Echoes of the Forgotten stories. This is the second one I’ve read, and it just proves to me how great this series is going to be. This is also my first book by Angel R. Sanchez, and I am eager to read his other works.
In Echoes of the Forgotten: Blackwood, we travel with sisters Jess and Kathy as they head back to their hometown, the Island of Blackwood Hollow, after the mysterious death of their father. When they attend their father’s funeral, they unknowingly unleash something that has remained trapped for over three hundred years.
This story was gripping and action-packed. The story opens with a bang and goes 100 MPH throughout the entire read-through. It was incredibly fun and kept me highly entertained throughout.
The writing style threw me for a loop a little bit, and it is one of the only complaints I have with the story. But other than that, this was a solid horror story that had a satisfying conclusion. But if you are one who wants a happy ending…then horror is not your cup of tea anyway.
You all need to check out Echoes of the Forgotten: Blackwood when it's released, as well as the other Echoes of the Forgotten stories. I can’t wait to continue with this series.
If Angel hasn’t become a must-read author for you yet, this one will do the trick! I swear, this guy could not write a bad book if he tried. Part of the Echoes of the Forgotten series, Blackwood is a witch, folky horror novella that grips you from the very first page.
The story follows estranged sisters Jess and Kathy who return to the town of Blackwood after their father’s death, only to find their bloodline has been cursed by a witch named Mercy Blackwood. With the help of some of the townsfolk, the two sisters try to end the curse. What they find is that all is not as it seems in Blackwood as horrors come to life and plunge the town into absolute chaos.
Angel once again packs so much into a short book. This isn’t a slow burn and you won’t have to wait long for the horrors to be unleashed. I love Angel’s writing, his prose is beautiful and his words just suck you into the worlds he creates. The dread and the atmosphere are rich and I just felt so drawn in from the very first chapter.
This book just checked all the boxes for what I love in witchy folk horror. Highly recommended.
Echoes of the Forgotten: Blackwood by Angel R. Sánchez 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟(4.5 rounded up)
This is a spooky and non-stop exciting horror novella!
Jess and her sister Kathy are informed of their father’s passing, and they go back to Blackwood Hollow where he had been living to tie up loose ends. Once there, Jess immediately feels things are wrong and all sorts of horrors begin. She’s been having nightmares that feel very real. The sister's realize there’s been a curse on their bloodline for hundreds of years from a witch who won’t rest.
The book is very well written and the imagery is fantastic! It’s very detailed and I was able to picture all the mysterious, and hauntingly gruesome scenes.
I was lucky to get an arc of this entertaining horror novella! This is the second book that I’ve read from this author and he’s quickly rising up on my favorite list!
This is part of a multi-author series: Echoes of the Forgotten
I’m looking forward to diving into other stories in this series as well.
**This books comes out June 12th and I definitely recommend the read!!**
Part of the Echoes of the Forgotten twelve book series, Angel's contribution is a creepy, fast paced atmospheric journey.
A curse haunts Jess and Kathy's bloodline. It has for over a century. When their father dies, they return to Blackwood Hollow, the place where it originates from only to be confronted by their curse once more in the form of a malevolent witch. Together with some locals, they work to put an end to the curse which is far bigger than any of them realize.
Angel does a great job in building dread and the evil witch at the centre of it all. She comes across as a truly terrifying force which is emphasized in her actions throughout the story. I enjoyed the looks back at the past and the insight into the curse and the witch through the diary and the pages missing from it the group finds which helps to build the finale into a hell of a crescendo.
Overall, a great entry to the series that will keep any folk horror loving readers very happy.
Angel R. Sanchez has become one of my favorite authors. Echoes of the Forgotten: Blackwood continues his streak of great books. It's a twist on a classic trope, religious horror. It's supposed to be a normal funeral for Jess and Kathy. Instead, they bump into a curse over three-hundred years old that is haunting Blackwood Hollow.
The descriptions in this book are well done and you can feel yourself in the story. It's a dark tale and if you love occult horror, that is perfect. I can promise you that the secrets are far worse that you might expect. The best part is that this is only one book of what will be a twelve book collection. All the books can be read as standalones, but this one by Angel is great. I can't wait to read the others.
Echoes of the Forgotten: Blackwood by Angel R Sanchez is a great example of why I love Angel’s work! I am not a fan of novella’s because they always seem to leave me feeling like I didn’t get the whole story, leaving me with more questions than I would care for.
But Angel has won me over! This novella is well written with (one again) Angel’s new & intriguing perspective on a witch burned at the stake in 1692. Mercy Blackwood shows no mercy and quite frankly, I don’t blame her!
The novella hits the floor running and keeps your attention until the very end. Telling a fully rounded tale in the span of a novella which is a win for me. It makes me excited to read the other eleven novellas that make up this book. I highly recommend all of Angel’s work. It’s always a fun ride!
In typical Angel fashion, this novella is very fast paced and intense. I love that no matter what the subject matter is, Angel puts his own spin on it. This is the 5th book I have read by him and his voice always bleeds through in his writing.
Sisters Jess and Kathy have just lost their estranged father. They must now return to Blackwood for his funeral where almost immediately, things go awry. The entire town is terrified of an evil that they feel has now been unleashed and somehow Kathy and Jess are the key to stopping it.
This is a story of darkness, betrayal and cursed family lines. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I think you will too!
I was given and ARC by Angel R. Sanchez and am always happy to read his books which are a great mix of horror, supernatural and ghost story elements. This story started off interesting and moved quickly without any confusing parts. I love the way the scenery is described and the characters. Mercy is described well in dreams and then sort of changes a little as she comes out in real life later in the story as the story progresses. There was a great mix of exciting elements and I was surprised at the ending, did not see it coming. Fun, fairly quick read.
Our ancestors have been writing historical family tidbits for centuries. But, who should we believe? Do we accept those records at face value, or dig deeper? The two sisters here discover that digging deeper comes with a heavy price - both physical and emotional. Enter Mercy Blackwood's domain if you dare!
The Salem Witch Trials at their best. Angel does it once again with this Blackwood story where two sisters return to their hometown after their father dies and find out about the curse on their family. Angel keeps you riveted to the edge of your seat with the suspense and writing. The characters are well drawn and the setting is amazing. Can't wait for his next one.
Another success from Sanchez. I loved this one and I’m hoping the others in the collection will be as good.
The Blackwood sisters return home to bury their dad, only to have their history haunt them. The story hooked me fast, took me on a ride, and had me wanting to know more in the best possible way.
