Review of advance copy
Thanks to Booksprout for a copy of this story and this is my freely given opinion.
This is book 3 of the series and marks the return of Edwin, the Earl of Devon, who left for the Continent under a cloud of scandal and humiliation in book 1. He appears to have loss some of his sense of arrogance and seeks to redeem his reputation by marrying well, to a woman of good social standing and reputation. He strategizes a detailed campaign, but at least this time, as opposed to previously, he at least tries to woo his chosen future bride, and seek her good regard.
Also on the search for a good marriage with a socially well-regarded spouse is Lady Eliza Montford, being escorted by Devon's sister and new brother in law, Lady Peregrine and Lord Hawthorne, and introduced as a cousin of Hawthornes. Secretly though, she is his half-sister and seeks to marry and settle her future before the secret becomes revealed.
Both Devon and Eliza are cool, calculated, and very level headed in their hunt for their future spouses, and recognize and appreciate this in each other. They are frequently in each others presence because of their shared friendships and family connections and have an attraction to each other. In spite of this, they are very focused on their seperate goals.
Until Eliza's secret threatens to be revealed, and a new scandal threatens to ruin the both of them. Then Edwin and Eliza quickly put their heads together to work out a plan to pivot and control the narrative. They find themselves to be formidable partners in the present, and hopefully the future.
Interesting story as Devon appears to have gained some maturity, though he is still pretty manipulative, it just seems to be with planning towards a more mature future and less selfish and uncaring in nature. I did enjoy the story, but while appreciate their thought, planning, and rationales for their futures, what it did not feel like for me was a believable romantic connection and relationship. Perhaps more a formidable partnership and alliance, that maybe later could include a building affection and attraction.

This is book 3 of a series. I have not read the previous books but I did not feel I was missing anything important.
Marriage of convenience is one of my favorite tropes. Unfortunately, I did not really connect with the characters. I found Eliza the most difficult to relate to. She was so restrained, even with her family, she came across as robotic. Every move and every emotional response was controlled. It was only after the announcing of the banns did she show some more natural reactions.
Even the romance was so restrained, the warmth between Eliza and Edwin was barely a flicker.
