Vow of Ashes

Rate this book
Surviving the Trials should have been the hard part. Now I have to survive being married to the dragon prince.

The marriage bond is sealed. Clan Bismyth called me theirs. Fear called me his fierce mortal protector in front of everyone and then kissed me until I forgot he planned my every step.

He planned the rebellion that needs us mortal and dragon shifter, proof that the kingdom can be remade.

For our rebellion, I’ll kiss him in public and smile as if I love him and clutch a knife behind my back.

I’m forced to share a horse, a bed, a story with this maddening dragon shifter.

The kingdom believes in us. How could they not, when he looks at me as if I’m his whole world? Sometimes, I even believe it.
Am I just his greatest plot…or did Fear trick himself this time and fall in love?

One step forward two backwards - what’s a dragon to do 🐉
Well the lies, betrayal and manipulation between Fear and Cara certainly continues throughout this book - and it’s not just Fear 😧 there is a lot of push and pull between these two (honestly almost the entire book) at points I do want to shake Fear and just say be real for once …. Sign of good author when you want to actually main the MMC 😅 Cara at times was really strong against him and she did seem more mature in admitting her parts ☺️ for me though it was a lot to be the majority of the book and would have liked that understanding a bit earlier to see their development - but for others it might be the right amount 😁
I do like you get Fears PoV in this so we get a bit more understanding behind his conniving ways … not that it’s excusable in some instances 🙈 and Cara really has herself a found family rallying around her 🥰
Cara and her dragon have some serious issues, honestly not sure whether they’re going to save each other or not, but that cliffhanger might just give them some hope 😄

The Dragon Trials series continues with Vow of Ashes! If you were eagerly waiting for the next book then don’t miss out now! There is a lot going on and it’s delicious chaos.
This book picks up where book one left off. Fear’s mother, the queen, has a “surprise” in store. She knows that he’s up to something and that’s against her. So, she decides to try to get a step ahead of him in the game. How? Declare his “engagement” and impending wedding to another. Through all his scheming it seems that Fear has managed to stay a step or two ahead of his mother. Thank goodness! But can they outwit the queen? She’s up to something and the question as to what...remains elusive.
Different from book one, this installment alternates POV. That was a nice little surprise when I started reading. In book one it was solely Cara, but now we get Fear’s POV as well.
Here is where we get secrets, truths, and surprise revelations. There is a lot to unpack in this book, so be prepared to settle in and put up a “Do Not Disturb” sign. I can’t wait for the next book to find out what happens next as Cara continues to fight for her family and those she loves. Or how Fear will continue his fight to bring about a change that he knows is long overdue for all under the queen’s rule.

The Queen needed to be removed from the throne but over the years her power and with the nightwalkers at her command, how could her son Fear do it? With the generational magic that did not allow one to kill a mother, father, son, or wife or husband of the crown. There was a belief that there was a strong dragon named Lightbringer that could take the magic from the queen and give magic to mortals. Fear needed to find the mortal that had the dragon sign and get her to train and be selected by Lightbringer the mate to Fear’s dragon Shadowbane. Cara was found but the half-truths and misdirection Fear had to use to not let the Queen his mother know of his plans, made Cara care about him but not trust him at the same time. When Clara was chosen by Lightbringer, it was not as it should be, she was mad, grumpy at Clara and most humans, she refused to talk with Clara, or even shift so Clara could fly. What could Clara do to get her to help her? Then when the Queen got a hold of Clara’s brother and the rest of the family could she get Clara to do her biding and betrayal Fear? Clan Bismyth was a clan of rogues like Fear they all trusted him and stood by his side. However, one of Fear’s early attempts to remove the queen cost Ander his best friend his love Tesa. Ander became well his enemy/plus he still respected Fear. What happens when Tesa is found alive? Will Tay Clara’s brother betray her? Will Lightbringer every show herself? Can Clara and Fear become more than just allies? And is all as it should be with Tesa?

A sharp, fast‑paced sequel that doubles down on tension, betrayal, and messy emotions. Fear and Cara spend most of the book locked in a frustrating cycle of secrets and half‑truths, and while it kept me hooked, it also made every small moment of honesty feel like a victory. Getting Fear’s POV added much‑needed clarity to his motives, even if it didn’t make his choices any easier to forgive.

Cara’s growth is one of the strongest parts of the story. She’s finally stepping into her power while still fiercely protecting her family and the people she’s claimed as her own. The found‑family dynamic remains a highlight—warm, loyal, and a perfect contrast to the political chaos surrounding them.

The dragons absolutely steal scenes again. Shadowbane’s commentary in Fear’s chapters is hilarious and brutally honest, while Lightbringer’s stubbornness mirrors Cara’s in the best (and most infuriating) ways. Their strained bond had me constantly wondering whether they’d end up saving each other or tearing each other apart.

My only real gripe is the sheer length of the push‑pull between Fear and Cara. The emotional whiplash goes on for so long that it starts to feel toxic rather than tense. When they finally talk like adults, it’s almost too late in the book.

Still, the twists, betrayals, and that brutal cliffhanger make this a gripping read. If you love fierce heroines, broody dragon‑bonded heroes, found family, and dragons with big personalities, this installment delivers.

Captivating series

Wow… I loved the first book in this series, but Vow of Ashes absolutely captivated me! Cara and Fear have been through so many trials (literally too!), but now that Cara has officially “married” Fear to save him from the Queen, their bond has clinched tighter. Even though she is officially part of Clan Amber, Clan Bismyth will always claim her as well, especially now. With the Queen still tethering her brother, Cara will go to any length possible to save him – even steal the item that the queen is looking for.

The line between fake and real seems to blur between the two of them as they both start to realize just how much they feel for the other, but with Fear always playing chess with the moving pieces, Cara isn’t sure if what he is feeling for her is actually real or just part of his game.

This book has quite a few spots that I literally pacing while reading – like during the Claiming… I was SOOO worried for Cara and for Keiran (I really, really love his character). Then when Cara had to go see if she would be claimed right after someone literally burned alive, well that was quite a nail biter. Thankfully, all went mostly well except her dragon isn’t acting like she should and their bond is strained.

I cannot wait to find out what happens next – that cliffhanger is going to leave me pacing while waiting for the next book (I mean, not really, but hopefully you get my point!). Definitely worth the read but start with the first book!

If there is one thing this series does well, it is keeping readers frustrated and invested at the same time. Fear and Cara spend much of this book caught in a cycle of secrets, betrayals, and half-truths, making every step forward feel like it could unravel at any moment. Fear continues to make choices that test both Cara's patience and the reader's, while Cara shows a level of growth and self-awareness that made her easier to root for throughout.

I appreciated finally getting more of Fear's perspective. Understanding his motivations added depth to his character, even if it did not make all of his actions any easier to forgive. The emotional tension between the two remains high from beginning to end, though I personally would have liked to see some of that conflict resolved sooner to allow more room for their relationship to evolve.

Beyond the romance, one of the strongest elements of the story is the sense of found family surrounding Cara. Watching the people in her corner rally around her added warmth and balance to an otherwise emotionally turbulent journey.

The relationship between Cara and her dragon remains one of the most intriguing parts of the series. Their bond feels increasingly fragile, and I spent much of the book wondering whether they would be each other's salvation or downfall. After that ending, I am desperate to see what comes next.

So close to being 5 stars
Dual POV
🌶️🌶️2.5/5
I devoured the first book and was constantly refreshing May Dawson’s updates waiting for the release of this sequel. Just as with Kiss of Ashes, Vow of Ashes was wonderfully fast-paced and full of tension.

With the added POV of Fieran’s, we see a little bit less of the side characters in this one, but they still make their mark. I appreciated how strong the “found family” trope continues to be in Cara’s story.
Fieran is the ultimate “morally gray MMC,” and the reader really gets to experience it when these lovers become enemies…then lovers again, then back to enemies. Most of all, I enjoyed hearing Shadowbane’s commentary in Fieran’s POV!

Why it was only a 4-star read for me:
I was a bit disappointed in the relationship progression between Fieran and Cara. The push-and-pull went on for almost the entire book and got sort of exhausting. By the time they finally had a productive, mature conversation, it’d already been nearly 500 pages of pettiness, including moments where I felt their relationship was more toxic than anything. Perhaps that was the point of this book, and the rest of the series will show their strength as a couple, but this was a big drawback to me.

Overall, a great 4 star read!

WOW what a whirlwind of action... I loved Vow of Ashes and it picks up from where book one left of and goes deep into lots of heated action between the FMC and the MMC. I was pulled into Surprises, shocking betrayals, and one heck of a Cliffy from the author who did not disappoint.
I love how the FMC is beginning to grow more into her strengths and still able to care for her family and those who she has become to love as her extended family and friends. The MMC I wanted to throttle because of all he did to the FMC. At the end of this book I could see a change in the dynamics of the FMC and the MMC's relationship to grow into something rare and beautiful.
Oh and the Dragons I love the banter between Shadowbane and Fear (the MMC) Shadowbane always had the last word in... And Lightbringer I found to be super stubborn just like her host Cara (the FMC) and I can understand why Lightbringer is the way she is.
So, if you love a Strong Fierce FMC, a Broody Strong Handsome MMC, Surprising Plot Twists, Heated Romantic scenes and beautiful Dragon Shifters then you need to read this book but I highly recommend that you start with book one Kiss of Ash.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This is Book 2 of 3 and an absolute must-read! We pick up right where Book 1 left off. Cara and Fear's relationship is incredibly complex, and I think this book works so well because you get to see events from both of their perspectives. I think it helps me understand Fear better and at least better than the FMC, haha!

There are so many forces pulling them together and pushing them apart that it keeps you constantly guessing. I have a few theories about how the series might end, but that's part of the fun—it's not predictable.

I think what I really love is that this book isn't your typical romance. It combines intrigue and mystery with themes of family, duty and self-discovery. I especially loved the friendships and the way the author portrays the relationships of the characters. The characters have real depth, which makes the story much more real and moving. I highly recommend if you love a book that allows you to get to know the characters and the world in which they exist. Def need to read book one though first!!

So much!

Vow of Ashes is the second book in the Dragon Trails series. And the author jumps right back into a world filled with secret agendas, emotional back and forth, betrayal, and dragons.

Cara and Fieran are back. Their journey is plagued by a scheming queen, who will use anyone or whatever she has to. It doesn't help that Fear has his own plans and isn't telling Cara everything.

Communication! Shadowbane was the voice of reason and multiple times tells Fear just that. Talk to Cara! Be honest and tell her what's going on. There were so many times I wished that Cara and Fear would just tell the other what was going on. That was the only thing that was a little frustrating for me.

The trials were exciting and it brought major changes. Cara had to face a lot in this book, and it wasn't just her relationship with Fear, but her actions will affect her family too. In fact, a decision at the end of this book could change everything between her and Tay.

I can't wait to see what happens next!

This was a long second book in the series, and every page was both frustrating and necessary to Fear and Cara's character development. After the first book ending with their "wedding vows," Cara finally feels like she belongs in clan Bismyth and with Fear. Then she figures out some of Fear's deceptions and lies, and they both have to deal with the consequences of those betrayals and Cara's even stronger, answering betrayal. The queen tries to capitalize on thier fracturing trust, but they know--even if personally they both need apologies and forgiveness before they can move on--that showing a united front in front of everyone is the only way to aid the rebellion. Even though some of their decisions and words made me frustrated they couldn't see each other's personality love more quickly, in real life this is exactly how many people react. And the final chapter leaves us with a cliffhanger about the direction of the rebellion. I can't wait for the next book, especially to solidify Cara and Fear's relationship and to finish the various side-characters' growth jouneys!

Picks right back up where book 2 left us. The growth between the characters is slow, but everything else is fast and will definitely keep engaged!

The relationship between Cara and Fear remains the heart of the story. Their marriage is built on mistrust, secrets, and manipulation, creating a constant push-and-pull dynamic that can be both frustrating and captivating. Fear's actions often test everyone's patience, but getting chapters from his perspective adds valuable insight into his motivations and character growth. Meanwhile, Cara continues to mature throughout the story, showing more confidence and self-awareness as she navigates impossible situations.

Beyond the romance, the found-family elements shine. Cara's support system provides warmth and balance amid the turmoil, and her bond with her dragon remains one of the most compelling aspects of the series.

You do see more of Cara's complicated relationship with her dragon. Book 2 ends in a cliff hanger.

I was so excited to jump back into this series. I loved the first book so much and this book has somehow surpassed that one. What I really enjoyed about this book is finally getting a peek into what Fear was thinking and it was just everything I was expecting. He has quickly stolen my heart and made me a fan. Yes he has been a bit tight lipped with information but I see he has a reason and I feel his reasons are good ones. Cara in this book while I adore her too and understand her trust problems and hesitations she has had me in a roller coaster of emotions with her decision.
There has been so many revelations, plot twists, betrayals and just overall chaos that by the end of the book I could not believe it had ended and it left me needing that next book soon. Trusts have to be repaired and decisions have to be made and I just hope that we find everyone on the right side when we get to the end

The story builds beautifully on the foundation laid in the previous book, raising the stakes and deepening both the emotional and political conflicts.
One of the strongest aspects of this book is the complex relationship between Cara and Fear. Their connection is anything but straightforward, and the author does an excellent job of exploring the many challenges that stand between them. Misunderstandings, secrets, and difficult choices create tension throughout the story, leaving readers constantly wondering whether they can overcome the obstacles in their path.
The feelings of betrayal that surface between them add another layer of emotional depth. Despite the hurt and mistrust, the attraction they share remains undeniable, creating a compelling push-and-pull dynamic that keeps you invested in their journey. Every interaction between them is charged with emotion, making their relationship one of the most intriguing parts of the book.

Gurrrrrrl!!! You brilliant and frustrating little cookie! This 2nd book does NOT disappoint! Now, I'm not one for spoilers, so some highlights and that's all I'm givin' ya. Cara is finally coming into her own, she is slowly learning that being mortal is a power all in itself. Trusting herself though, is a totally different story. (Isn't it that way for all of us really??) Her relationship with Fear is escalating, but holy crap does it just make you want to punch things. They are learning each other, but are also learning secrets. Truth does hurt.
This book allowed for us to get to know more of the clans and the backstory of Fear and Ander, and boy howdy, that one is rough.
If you haven't started this series, and you love fantasy, shifters, Fae, AND an epic storyline? This one is for you, so stop reading my rambling and go download the 1st book!

We are back with Cara and Fear. Their story continues as a push and pull. They fight and distrust each other with an iron grip. I love the story and how it continues but I have mixed feelings with Cara. She at times acts high and mighty as if her virtues are better than everyone else. Then she will do something that is just as deceitful as some of the ones she has trust issues with. The story was slower as they learn to navigate their relationship with each other. Trust is not easy to come by. Near the end of this book the story really picks up. There are some really insightful moments that completely adds to the story. As the book ends my mixed feelings for Cara started to change as she finally starts to grow into herself. I love how it ends even though there is a really big cliffhanger. I absolutely cannot wait to see what happens next.

Book 2 of the Dragon Trials series see Fear and Cara married. Fortunately, there’s still so much happening in this book. Fear is still frustrating to both Cara and myself (lol). His half truths and secrets made it feel like every step forward was followed by 2 steps backwards. I loved getting to see Cara come into her own and loved her ‘found’ family rally around her with support.
I did feel like this story was slow to move as we watched the push-pull relationship of Fear and Cara. Cara had a tendency to act like she was better than others while pulling the same lies and deceit that she hated from others.
I appreciated that things started to pick up closer to the end, just when things were looking good we are hit with the cliffhanger. Now I’m anxiously waiting for the rest of their story!

Went to work with a book hangover! Couldn't put it down! #worthit

Vow of Ashes is the second book in the Dragon Trials series by May Dawson. The story picks up with Cara having completed her part of the wedding vows in order to save Fieran from the arranged marriage that his evil mother announced. But now what? What does it mean to be married to the Dragon Prince? The one who manipulates and lies for the greater good? The one who takes Cara's breath away, even when she loathes him? What does it mean to be the hero in a rebellion she never wanted to be a part of? Is her relationship with Fear even real? Does he really care for her, or is it all an act? And what of the rebellion? With so much at stake, does it matter if it's real? Or is the only thing that's important is the fact that the rebels need to believe it is so?

This book will make you laugh, cry, and most likely rage at imaginary characters. Make sure you plan adequate time to read it, otherwise you may find yourself going to work the next day with a book hangover. I know I did!

I voluntarily reviewed a copy of "VOW OF ASHES" given by the author M.K. Dawson for my honest review.
Cara survived the Trials but now she has to make nice with the Dragon Prince, the marriage bond is sealed Clan Bismyth called her theres & Fear called her his, kissed her infront of everyone calling her his fierce mortal protector.
Cara & Fear's relationship is quite the bumpy push pull rollercoaster ride always at odds with one another, they have trust issues, dealing with secrets, betrayal, twists that haven't shown yet.
Will Fear & Cara get a HEA will he let her know he truly loves her, shes knows he's been keeping secrets from her making it so she doesn't trust him, the cliffhanger has you wanting the next book ASAP to see whats going to happen, great job May.

She spends so long fighting the bond when she discovers the truth about it, that she doesn't see the truth of what Fear really feels for her.
Fear is so good at hiding his true self, that without his dragon, he comes close to losing her.
Cara is so determined to do the right thing, that she will sacrifice herself to do it.
Fear will always put her first, no matter what he try's to portray to everyone else.
Cara is the chosen mortal and she now has to realise that there is more out there than just her family.
There's a new one, willing to welcome her home.
But the Queen is going to do everything in her power to stop them.
This story line is intriguing and it's hard to put this down once you start.

I screamed with excitement when I got a hold of this book. I got to read book one and two back to back, which was absolutely amazing and I can’t wait to reread book one book 2 again before book 3 releases. I absolutely adore this author so when I found out that she was writing dragons I said, sign me up. I love that This book is dual POV. Getting to see inside Fear’s brain helps lessen my irritation with him. I normally hate a slow burn, but I am absolutely here for this. I lost sleep reading these books back to back, but I am not mad about it. These two will definitely be living in my brain rent-free until book 3 releases. Not rushing… But when is that? Asking for myself and anyone else that has been obsessed with this series.

This is the second book in the Dragon Trials series and started where the first book ended. Cara and Fear are suddenly married and then it’s a constant back and forth with their relationship. The story has lots of secrets revealed, several betrayals, half truths and a little steam. I loved the commentary of Shadowbane. If only Fear would listen to him. I enjoyed the found family aspect. Cara finally feels part of a family rather than self sacrificing herself for her true family. Cara has become a little more self aware but still has a way to go. Fear needs to realize that he doesn’t know it all. I’m looking forward to seeing what is going to happen in the next book.

With the ending of the last book, I was CHOMPING for this next book and I did not rest until I finished it. And now I am mad that I have to wait for the next one. 😒

We see things ramping up between Fear and his mother, the queen, and as a result, Cara's family is caught in the crossfire, and in typical Fear fashion, he thinks he has the situation figured out, and as a result, he and Cara have a pretty major falling out.

This book did not slow down from start to finish, and it is fast becoming my favorite series of M.K. as it has so many tropes that are so well done, and even though it was over 400 pages, it did not feel like it at all.

Spice is 2.5/5 for me

This 2nd in the series doesn't disappoint! While dealing with her feelings about marriage to Fear, Cara is finally finding strength in herself as she comes to realize there is more power in being mortal than she originally thought. Now, she just needs to trust herself and is not sure if or when she should. Her relationship with Fear is leading to learning and sharing secrets that sometimes hurt, but it is done in a way that pulls the reader in.
This book also shared more background about the clans, including more info on Fear and Ander. Great series that includes, fantasy, Fae, shifters and great world and character building. Enjoy!

There’s not a single book May Dawson could write that I wouldn’t devour. This book was absolutely amazing, I couldn't put it down. For once, a book didn't end on a crazy cliffhanger, I very much appreciate that. Seeing Cara grow and Fear open up. Seeing Cara's mom grow and understand her more. Always love Ander and Kiegan! Maura too we get to see more of. This was so perfect and I definitely need more. I cannot wait to see where their battle takes them. Can a mortal save them all?? Ohhhh I can't wait to find out! Definitely read book 1 before book 2, and then wait impatiently with the rest of us for the next book.

Oh Cara. Your heart and loyalty my dear. If you want a lot of drama and angst coupled with some of the best snark/sarcasm I’ve read in a while, this is it. But grab book one first so you aren’t lost.

It’s almost time for the Claiming, and tensions are high. Fear has so many pieces on the board, and just one wrong move will equal a checkmate that sends everything crashing. Enter Maura…

I’m still in love with everything about this series and I hope that as it progresses we see further development in our characters so they aren’t quite so thick-headed. The promise and potential of a glorious rebellion and a love story for the ages rests in the pages and I can’t wait to get more.

This was a fantastic addition to a really good series. In this book we get to see Fear’s pov and it really added depth and pulled me more into their story. The world building and character growth continued to be amazing in this book. I really enjoy this storyline and these characters. The authour has done a really great job expressing the tension between our two main characters , so much so that has me grumbling at Cara and Fear! Overalls, this series has me hooked, well written, well paced, fantastic world building and phenomenal characters, this plot is thick and full of intrigue, romance, tension and found family. I am eager for more!

As the second book in the series, the story continues to develop and draw battle lines between Cara/Fear and the Queen. Cara and Fear's relationship has its own battles as secrets, truths and a betrayal ensue undermining their fragile marriage. The push and pull between these two gets maddening a few times. Add into the mix that Cara is dealing with a silent dragon that refuses to fully bond, and the road to removing the Queen remains an uphill battle. This was a good second book bridging the first book and leading into the third, which I am looking forward to immensely.
