Mythology, contemporary themes, and a thrilling setting are some of the aspects that I really loved about this book. Max the main character begins to unravel the mysteries within Las Vegas. As he begins to unravel these mysteries the questions of his parents disappearance begins to unravel and make him question everything that he knows.

I’ve been a mystery lover for as long as I can remember. It started with Nancy Drew when I was in elementary and middle school, eventually leading me to authors like Agatha Christie. Add in my love of thrillers, a touch of the supernatural, and a healthy fascination with conspiracy theories, and No Rest for the Wicked was right up my alley.
Kat Anderson has crafted a story that blends mystery, suspense, conspiracy, and the paranormal into a fast-paced adventure that kept me turning pages. I especially enjoyed the Las Vegas setting and following Max West as he unraveled layer after layer of secrets surrounding a missing socialite, ancient mysteries, and his own family’s past.
What I enjoyed most was how the story continued to expand. Just when I thought I understood where things were headed, another piece of the puzzle emerged. The mix of detective work, hidden organizations, family secrets, and larger-than-life conspiracies made for a thoroughly entertaining read.
By the time I reached the end, I wasn’t ready for the story to be over. There are still questions I need answered, and I’m already looking forward to seeing where Max’s journey goes next.
Congratulations, Kat, on an incredible debut. I can’t wait for Book 2!

As a debut novel, I really think Kat Anderson is someone to keep an eye on in the thriller/mystery space.
For the first 3/4 of the book, I was glued. From the structure to the writing, it was so easy to want to keep reading. The short chapters made it easy to say "just one more" over and over again, especially with the mystery unfolding with so many complex layers and new details.
While the alternating focus/pov across chapters sometimes made me have to re-read to figure out which character was the focus/reorient myself, I think having those different 'lenses' into characters added to the reading experience in a good way. There's so many schemes, directions, ideas, plots, all of it... and getting glimpses into the different 'sides' of the story and mystery leads you to read the other chapters differently and perceive the characters in new ways. As a reader, I felt like I was both in the investigation with Max and an outsider to it all (but in a good way).
The mystery itself never failed to keep my attention. It took the aspect into a direction I haven't read before (not that there aren't any books out there that go in a similar direction, I'm sure). The investigations not only surrounding characters but also regarding history, strange occurrences, relics, and a sort of multidimensional overhanging question were all equally gripping for me!
I would say this is much more plot-driven than character-driven, which I think works well for the story. There's enough about each character to get oriented with them, and the most developed 'characters', so to speak, are more so groups; Max's family has something going on, and the Davenports are a whole wild group in and of themselves, but there's also some outside organizations that kept me questioning as we got more details about them. My only "qualm" with the characters was that some of their reactions to events and such felt unrealistic.
The structure works, the characters/plot balance works, and I thought the pacing was really well done for most of the story. I was never bored, there's some good humor sprinkled in (shoutout to Bobby), and I did really enjoy the story's mysteries. I don't want to go into too many details about what it surrounds because my favorite part of reading was learning about the rituals, relics, and everything surrounding it, but it was such a good blend into a thriller/mystery!

Throughout the story, I did try to follow the clues and figure things out, though sometimes I had to just go with the flow and trust that Anderson would piece it together. For the most part, things came together! However, towards the end, I found that things felt a tad rushed and got really convoluted. It seemed to me that too many new elements, directions, characters, and questions were being brought in, expanding the story a bit too much to keep track of. I also felt like some things didn't add up and weren't consistent, leaving me a bit unsatisfied with some loose ends by the end (that I believe were supposed to be seen as 'resolved' for this first book - NOT the loose ends that are clearly a setup for the second book). I just wanted more clarity on some of the elements in here, and I think tightening the story at the end would have made me enjoy it more rather than trying to go in a lot of directions all at once.
Overall, I enjoyed this one and would recommend it to mystery/thriller readers who want something unique that blends in some speculative and supernatural-ish elements! Bonus for those who like culty vibes!

I found Kat’s post on Threads, seeking ARC readers for her debut novel, in exchange for a review we would get the above mentioned box. While I initially was hesitant, as thrillers are not my preferred genre, I’m glad I did. Breaking out of my comfortable horror genre, Kat’s book made me think more critically, much like her MMC, Max West.
At first the novel did start off a bit slow, for me, it did quickly pick up traction and didn’t relent until the final word. The Vegas setting, and the occult and Egyptian themes and folklore hypnotized me.
The ending left me with more questions than I started with. Is this the end of Max West, or are there more cases in his and our future?
If you like any of the following, I would encourage you to give this a read: corrupt cops, rituals, sacrifices,missing persons (family, staff, celebrities), unreliable characters, duplicity, and a whole lot of fucking beetles!

I wish I could rate this a 4.5 stars!
This isn’t my normal type of book but I still really enjoyed it! It had a good range of suspense and humor. There were times I chuckled out loud and another time I was ready too late and had to stop reading because I got freaked out.
There is a good sense of found family/community which I enjoyed.
There was a lot of side characters I was interested in as well which helped more the story along. It also included character growth.
I can usually guess where a book is going to go. Boy I had no clue reading this one. (which I really love because that doesn’t happen often for me)
I love that this is set in Vegas. It really helped blend real world of crime, detectives, corrupt government and rich families with some more things like security societies and more (without including spoilers).
Overall I feel like this is a strong well written book. I am invested and I need to know what happens in the next book.

This book actually grabbed me and pulled me right in nearly straight away. The pacing was excellent and the flow was great. I admittedly have a hard time getting into and staying interested in a third person point of view but did not have any issues this time at all! It truly felt like I was getting to read a script for Hollywood's next big SciFi/Thriller movie.
Our story opens up in Las Vegas and follows our MMC PI Max West. Max is plagued by the sudden death of his parents when he was a young boy. Max begins researching the disappearance of the granddaughter of a local well known family, The Davenports. As Max digs around strange happenings, he begins connecting the dots with an old murder, his parents' disappearance and an ancient relic all connected to the Davenports. Max has no idea he is being watched and essentially manipulated into certain situations by an outside entity. It's hard to know who can be trusted. Just when you think you have the story figured out, another twist comes along and throws you off the trail!
The only thing I really can say I had a hard time with sometimes, was the multiple character POV's. In the end, I just needed to go back and re-read just a few pages to reset myself and get started back on the right path.
What a wild ride and great debut from Kat Anderson. Can't wait for the next in this gripping series!

I am an ARC (Advanced Review Copy) reader for Koehler Books. I have never read a thriller in my life, as I am primarily a nonfiction reader, so this was my first thriller. Kat definitely didn’t disappoint me—this book was captivating from the start.
One important design decision I think Kat made was to make the book so readable, accessible, and easy to consume. Each chapter is short and sweet, so I can stop at any point if I have something urgent to take care of. Even though, most of the time, I just power through!
I love this short-chapter format for novels, especially thrillers. If you have a short window of time but want a little tension and suspense, this thriller allows you to dive in and out with ease.
I also really like a few of the character designs in her book. Without spoiling anything, I’ll just say: humans are complicated. One character says:

Kat Anderson delivers a gripping debut that blends mystery, suspense, and unexpected twists into a story that kept me invested from beginning to end. One of the book’s greatest strengths is its pacing. Each chapter feels complete and satisfying while naturally building anticipation for what’s next. I found myself repeatedly saying, “Just one more chapter,” only to keep reading.
The characters are compelling, the mystery unfolds at just the right pace, and every time I thought I had the answers, another twist proved me wrong. It’s clear that Kat has created a world with plenty more stories to tell, and that’s perhaps the highest compliment I can give: I finished the book genuinely excited for the next installment.
As a fellow author, I appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into creating a story that is both entertaining and difficult to put down. As a reader, I simply loved the journey.

Anderson's debut Las Vegas noir thriller ups the ante on the genre by introducing readers to several new elements that thrill like a fast ride along a scenic but dangerous road. Set in the Nevada desert and beyond into the utopian realm, the story's characters are sharply drawn and each setting rings true. The main character, Max, is a next gen iteration of the leading PI star: strong and handsome in that unadorned non-precious way that never gets old, while also being a male in possession of kindness alongside a high IQ and EQ, fully capable of carrying out smart conversations and insightful inner monologues, as well as saying no to beautiful women throwing themselves at him at inopportune moments. Wow! No Rest for the Wicked grabbed me right in the beginning. A real wild ride of a story. It honestly doesn't matter what kinda stories you like this one is top notch. It has everything a reader could want, suspense, paranormal, occult, sci-fi, whatever your taste is it's got it. The protagonist Max West a Las Vegas Native "Battle Born" and he is the type of guy you could actually see your being friends with. Omg! And the secondary characters fantastic. The whole time I was reading I was drawn into the gritty neon haze of the Vegas. The dark side of the city really comes through this neo-classic Noir mystery thriller perfectly. Go read this book and then get ready for the second, third, and so on it is a great book. Thanks to the Author for letting me read ahead of of release. I can't wait for the next Max West story.

No Rest for the Wicked is genuinely one my favorite mystery/thriller/suspense reads!
Ever since I read the first page, I was completely and utterly captivated! I loved how the author implemented my favorite genres/tropes such as ancient elements, mystery, supernatural occurrences, mythology, conspiracy, and so much more. To add, I loved the world-building and fast paced action and adventure in this story. Never once did I feel bored or impatient with this book! Also, I loved the setting of the Las Vegas location. It adds even more exhilaration for enigma!

I really enjoyed this! It starts a little slow, giving you some background, but it doesn't stay that way for long. Before you know it, the story dives into ritualistic murders, secret societies, ancient mysteries, and plenty of twists I didn't see coming.
If you like detective stories with a darker edge and don't mind a little supernatural mystery mixed in, I'd definitely recommend giving this one a shot. It kept me guessing, and I found myself wanting "just one more chapter" more than once. A fun, suspenseful read that blends classic noir with ancient secrets in a way that really works. I can't wait to see what the future holds for Max West!

Max West begins an investigation into a missing woman and ends up in the middle of a world of ancient secrets and danger. This was different for me so it took a couple chapters to get into but once I was in I was in. This was action packed, filled with adventure, mystery and even time traveling. But it took place in modern day Las Vegas which I really liked! Max is on the hunt to figure out what happened to his parents, he’s a private detective and ready for answers.

I didn't find these characters to be super compelling, but I really liked the socialite and art world side of this story.
This was entertaining and interesting and I really do think a lot of different kinds of mystery/thriller readers would really enjoy this book.

Great read! I was unsure of where the story was going in the beginning and then as it unfolded I became more and more entranced. If you like mystery with a side of supernatural this is for you! I can’t wait to read the next book!

4.25 stars. The suspense, the mystery!! I was pulled in from the beginning and could not stop!! I love the character building and the introduction into this world of mysterious relics really has you questioning what is real and what’s not. Definitely looking forward to more!
