Crown & Cipher #1
A Courtship of Conspiracies
A hunt for the truth. A dangerous secret. A love that risks everything.
James Campbell, Earl of Brenton, is an agent of the Crown hunting a killer. Driven by grief and a relentless need for justice, he has followed trails from the country’s darkest corners to the most powerful circles of high society. But after a string of reckless choices, James must prove his steadiness by securing the marriage society expects. It should be a simple matter of duty, until the captivating woman in question proves to have a talent for finding trouble and unsettling his carefully laid plans.
Lady Katherine Sutherland has spent her life balancing society’s rigid expectations with a guarded secret of her own. When a startling discovery draws her into a web of treason, Kate finds herself on a collision course with the very man she is expected to marry, the one man capable of uncovering the truth she has spent years hiding.
As a deadly conspiracy closes in and an unseen enemy tracks their every move, James and Kate must decide what they are willing to risk for the truth, for the Crown, and for each other. In a game of shifting loyalties and precarious alliances, falling in love may be the riskiest move of all.
A Courtship of Conspiracies begins a new Regency spy romance series, full of intrigue, danger, and all the swoon without the spice.

A lifelong voracious reader, her fascination with the Regency era began at age thirteen when she borrowed a Georgette Heyer novel from her mother’s bookshelf. Years later, her passion for books led to six years of sharing her favorite reads online. Inspired by her degree in political science and a deep love of history, she finally decided to write the stories running through her head.
When she isn’t brainstorming treasonous spy plots, Marilee can be found running, organizing her life into spreadsheets, or cheering for Team Colin Firth. She has lived in four countries outside the U.S.—Ireland, England, Italy, and Malta—and currently resides in the Midwest with her husband, their five children, and a mischievous English retriever named Bailey.

I had no doubt I would love every bit of this book, but it still BLEW MY MIND!! It's full of the sweetest romance, close friendships, mystery...and when I say mystery, I mean like the chills and wide eyes and holding tight to the book kind of mystery. The kind where you think you have it all figured out, you think it's over...and then she throws another one at you. 😶
I LOVE regency spies, and this one is PERFECTION. 😍 Sometimes I feel like spies books can be a little boring, just kinda drag on, but this one never did. It only got BETTER. It got to where my kindle wasn't leaving my hands, and people around me were asking if I was ok. 😅😅
If you haven't tried this book yet, I hope I've convinced you to give it a try!! Trust me, you won't regret it. 🩷

Wow! What a fantastic debut novel! I absolutely loved this book! The writing and storytelling were very well done. James and Kate were a great couple! I loved their chemistry and banter and how well they complemented one another. James works as an agent to the crown and is trying to find a killer. He needs to marry to stay grounded to his job and not be reckless. He wants to marry Kate but she has a secret she is keeping that may or may not complicate things. There is a great mystery element to the story that I really enjoyed! I did figure out who the culprit was but it didn’t take away from the excitement of the story! And I didn’t have everything figured out there were still secrets to be revealed. I also enjoyed the family members of James and Kate. Overall I thought this story was excellent! And I definitely recommend!

4.7 stars (5/10 hearts). Regency is not always my favourite genre nowadays, because I have several bones to pick with many writers of regency fiction. But this book satisfied almost all my desires for a regency mystery novel. I LOVED the spy plot line, and the cryptography, and how the author explained the historical aspects in her note. I loved the characters too—James & Kate were such a great pair. Their romance contain a little more sizzly swoon than I personally care for in the kisses, etc., but it is clean and sweet and would probably be more popular with someone who's more of a romance girlie than I am. 😉 I enjoyed watching them slowly understand each other and try to manage their own secrets, and their friend-group is awesomeee—I need a book about each of them! Also, the mystery itself was fascinating and I'm thrilled to say I CALLED IT—but I didn't figure it all out and it was so fun to watch it slowly unfold. Overall, this was a great read by a new-to-me author and I can't wait for the sequel(s)!

Wow, okay, how do I sum this book up without spoilers? First, the cover is stunning! It’s what made me want to buy it in the first place! I was hooked from the start and didn’t want to put it down! I loved Kate and James. They were both great characters and were perfect for each other. Their banter was spot on. The mystery aspect and the spies were awesome! It kept me hooked and made my heart pound on more than one occasion. I did guess who the bad person was pretty early on which I’m pretty proud of myself for that…haha! It didn’t take away my enjoyment of the book at all and my mouth still dropped open when it was all revealed. There was a lot of kissing in this book. It wasn’t descriptive, just a lot in my opinion. There were also some great quotes that I’ll have to be sure to tab. Everything was very well described and I felt like I was right there with the characters. Although, I don’t think I have the courage to be a spy. 😂 Overall, I loved it! It was an exciting and exhilarating ride with a perfect ending! An amazing debut novel! I can’t wait for Book 2 and whatever else this author writes!

Mystery, Intrigue, Danger, and a Sweet Romance
I absolutely loved A Courtship of Conspiracies! If I hadn’t known this was Marilee Merrell’s debut novel, I never would have guessed. The writing was polished, engaging, and felt completely at home in the Regency era.
This book had everything I enjoy in a Regency romance. There was mystery, intrigue, danger, and a sweet, clean romance woven throughout the story. I was quickly drawn into the lives of James and Kate and became fully invested in what would happen to them. They were both such likable, well-matched characters, and I loved watching their relationship develop amid all the secrets and suspense.
The mystery kept me guessing, and there were several surprises along the way that I didn’t see coming. The spy elements added an extra layer of excitement without overshadowing the romance.
This was one of those books where I felt completely immersed in the story from beginning to end. I felt right at home in this novel and never wanted to put it down. If you enjoy Regency romance with a strong mystery, engaging characters, and a sweet, clean love story, this is one to add to your list.
I’m already eager to see what happens next in this new Regency spy series and will definitely be pre-ordering book two. A fantastic debut and a series I’m excited to continue! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

3.5⭐️ Fun Spy Story!
This book is a whirlwind of a story, a page-turner, and memorable characters 🥰
So why not 4 of 5⭐️? The romance is closed door, but there were so many kisses (multiple detailed ones) and physical focus in the romance. I docked a star for that.
I did enjoy it. The mystery was intriguing. I loved the spy moments and all the twists and turns. I’ll definitely be reading the next book!
Content: murder, some violence, heavy kissing

“You have saved me, Kate. In more ways than you know.”
Oh my goodness, how is this Marilee’s debut?!
I was hooked from start to finish and could hardly put it down. There is mystery, suspense, and swoony clean romance all set during the Regency era. So Regency fans, go and grab this amazing debut novel! Trust me!
Content Guide:
Language: none
Sexual Content: Kisses only (passionate but not overly descriptive, more emotional)
Violence/gore: Mild-some violence and gore involving guns, fists, kidnapping
Substance use: none
Prejudices: none
Other: nothing major

A fun, romantic historical spy mystery. Kate is a traditionally feisty, can't-stop-me heroine, while James is a run of the mill don't-touch-my-lady hero. Predictable and enjoyable. I liked the side characters and the mystery itself was pacy and enjoyable.
A bit too heavy on the lovering/yearning for my taste (so much yearning!) and rather overwritten in those passages. What can I say, I'm not really a romantic at heart. It also got annoying that the author used both intentional archaisms and modern words. I would pick up the next book in the series for a good time!

“A man ought to regard the woman he loves as if she were the very air he breathes—that every moment in her presence is a gift to be cherished. That he would count no sacrifice too great to keep her safe. That his life begins and ends with her alone.”
What a debut novel! I was hooked from the first page and I couldn’t wait to pick it up each day. The writing is amazing and these characters are like long lost friends. This fantastic story has an “expected” marriage and is packed with secrets, spies, romance, and danger. I loved the mystery and I really enjoyed trying to figure it out before it was revealed (which I didn’t).
James is charming, protective, and loyal. He is scarred by his past and I loved seeing his growth and learning to trust himself again. I loved his friend group (and truly hope there is more of them all to come!). I loved James’ determination to court Kate. I loved that though he wanted to protect her he also listened and didn’t fight her help (not too hard anyway). Kate is intelligent, courageous, and determined. I loved her bravery in stepping into the mystery. I loved that she didn’t back down and though she knew they were both keeping secrets she trusted James. I loved James and Kate’s chemistry and banter. I loved their reconnection and how their love grew. I loved their conversations and honesty (without giving away their secrets). I loved when they shared their childhood memories. I loved how they worked together, protecting and loving each other through all the danger. Such a fantastic swoony romance! I am eagerly anticipating book 2!!
A few more quotes:
💙 He had faced down loaded pistols and ruthless traitors; surely he could survive one evening in the company of a beautiful, intriguing woman. 💙
“Say the word, Kate, and I am yours.”
“Kate, it’s impossible for me not to notice when you are near.”
“James, love is not the absence of danger. Love is choosing someone despite the risks. You cannot protect a person by standing between them and the world, no matter how hard you try.”

This book has everything you want in a suspense novel: mystery, suspense, intrigue, uncertainty, romance, twists, and turns.
I loved the characters and the growth in their arcs. I loved how they were ALL accepting of each other's strengths, and how they were willing to admit their weaknesses, too. Though with some hardheadedness thrown in. Haha! But I don't like to admit mine either, so that's perfectly understandable.
There were a few times that felt a little bogged down with description, which is why it's a 4 star for me. But that just means there's room for growth.
And I can't wait to see what Marilee writes next.

I haven't stopped thinking about this book since I finished it. This book is responsible for keeping me up way into the wee hours of the morning! A Courtship of Conspiracies by Marilee Merrell is officially one of my favorite reads of the year. I have been following Marilee's bookstagram journey for years, and knowing how many books she has read and reviewed, I knew she would understand exactly what makes a story work. But wow, she completely blew me away with her debut!
What makes this novel so spectacular is that it gives you the absolute best of both worlds. On one hand, you get a swoon-worthy, butterflies-in-your-stomach Regency romance. On the other hand, there is this incredibly gripping, fast-paced spy mystery happening at the same time. Usually, one plotline overshadows the other, but Marilee balanced the romance and the suspense perfectly. I was leaning in for the kisses while simultaneously trying to guess the treasonous plot twists!
And can we talk about the characters?! I completely fell in love with them. The chemistry, the banter, and the depth of their connection felt so incredibly real. I actually ended up highlighting about eight different quotes because the writing is just so stunningly beautiful. I couldn’t fit them all here, but this line alone completely broke me:
"You have become the light I keep finding, even in the shadows."
The romance is clean (kisses only), but the emotional intensity and tension are off the charts. You can feel the protective devotion in every single scene. Another absolute favorite moment of mine describes it perfectly:
"His lips found hers before she could finish, stealing his name from her mouth as he kissed her with aching gentleness, his touch saying I choose you in a hundred different ways."
If you love childhood friends-to-lovers, secret identities, forced proximity, and intelligent characters who can hold their own in a dangerous world, you need to read this immediately. It is the perfect first book to the Crown & Cipher series, and I am already desperate for book two!
****I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, NetGalley, book tours, and or authors. A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.****

If Regency romance and suspense had a bookish love child, it would be A Courtship of Conspiracies by Marilee Merrell. I love Regency romance, and when you add mystery, danger, and espionage to the mix, I'm in reader heaven.
This fantastic debut introduces James Campbell and Lady Katherine Sutherland, childhood friends whose parents have expected them to marry for years. After spending several years apart, Kate isn't willing to marry someone who feels like a stranger and insists on a proper courtship. What neither of them realizes is that the other is harboring a significant secret, leading to a delightful blend of romance, secrets, and suspense that kept me turning pages late into the night.
One of my favorite things about this book was the relationship between James and Kate. Their shared history gives their romance a depth that feels authentic from the beginning. I loved watching them reconnect, recall childhood adventures, and fight their growing feelings for each other. The camaraderie between them is sweet, their banter is fantastic, and the chemistry practically sparkles on the page. I loved the dual POV. Getting inside both James's and Kate's heads drew me deeper into their story.
And then there's the suspense. The spy elements, secrets, conspiracies, and danger had me completely hooked. Every time I thought I could put the book down, something else happened that pulled me right back in. I needed to know what was going on, who could be trusted, and how everything would come together. And that twist near the end?! What in the what?! I absolutely did not see it coming.
A Courtship of Conspiracies is very impressive and doesn't read like a debut novel! It's romantic and suspenseful, while delivering a swoony friends-to-lovers romance. Best of all, it's the start of a Regency spy series, and I'm ready for book two.

“James, love is not the absence of danger. Love is choosing someone despite the risks. You cannot protect a person by standing between them and the world, no matter how hard you try.”
Wow! I’m amazed that this is a debut novel! This book has it all: regency era, a betrothal, secrets, spies, deceit, mystery, drama, suspense, plot twists, and of course, LOVE!
James is in need of a wife to improve his standing/reputation. So, who better to marry, than his betrothed since childhood, best friend’s younger sister, Kate? However, Kate is not so keen on the plan and insists on a five week courtship first. But little do they know they are both a part of something bigger and their secret lives are about to become entangled
Oh. My. Word! James and Kate are so great! I loved their slow burn romance amongst all the craziness that they were wrapped up in! I loved that they had a past (as childhood friends) and that then be notes to them they were both working for the greater good! James so was protective of Kate and Kate was so strong and independent! I loved the mystery and suspense woven throughout the story! These things combined with some definitely kept me turning pages!
Favorite quotes:
“Compose yourself, Kate,” she whispered to her reflection. “Brown eyes and broad shoulders are not a reason to lose your resolve.”
“Though Alex may disagree, love is not something you can plan for,” William said. “It happens when you least expect it. Love may find you, James, whether you want it to or not.
“A man ought to regard the woman he loves as if she were the very air he breathes—that every moment in her presence is a gift to be cherished. That he would count no sacrifice too great to keep her safe. That his life begins and ends with her alone.”
“Kate, it’s impossible for me not to notice when you are near.”

I also loved the foreshadowing and little clues throughout the book that had me guessing the villain and what would happen next!
I love this world the author created and I can’t wait for more!!!
This book is exciting, romantic, action packed, heartwarming, heart racing, addicting, and I loved every single moment of reading it. This is a must read as soon as possible type of story.
This book stole my heart, my sleep, and it’s truly amazing in every way!

I. Loved. This. Story. Quite an amazing and fascinating story! I’m still in awe at the creative pen of debut author Merrell.
🥁 Drum roll! 🥁 Debut novel from author Marilee Merrell! And what a debut this was, she nailed it!!!
Oh, how I LOVED this story!!! It was so GOOD! I believe this was my most anticipated read of the year and it didn’t disappoint. I found everything I love in a Regency novel in this book. Conspiracies, spies, secrets, danger, traitors, intrigue, well you name it. And adding the trope of childhood friends to lovers, one of my favorites if not THE favorite, and you easily hook me in. I found myself in a dilemma, I couldn’t read fast enough to know what was going to happen, it’s a page turner and end of the seat story for sure, and at the same time I wanted to savor every detail 🙄
Then I was on edge many times, apprehensive of what was going to happen and checking how many pages were left in the book because I suspected that something was going to happen knowing there was still much to read, arrrrgh, and it happened! Noooooo!!! 🙈
And Wow! What an unexpected climax! I’m speechless! I didn’t see it coming. Well done! 👏🏻 And so many twists and turns throughout the story! Unbelievable fascinating!
A few more things I loved:
- The camaraderie between James and his friends
- “Time to be bold.”
- Aunt Edith and her hothouse! I can imagine myself in there. But I loved her more so for her wisdom and friendship. I want to be like her when I grow up 😄
- I always find the historical notes fascinating and love when authors include them in their books
- And I’m sure there are many more I’m forgetting 🙈
Kate ❤️ James
I loved them both so much! I believe they’re my new favorite fictional couple 🤷🏻♀️
“Only and forever you.”
And some excerpts I loved:
“…love is not something you can plan for… It happens when you least expect it. Love may find you, whether you want it to or not. ‘But to see her was to love her; Love but her, and love forever.’”
“A man ought to regard the woman he loves as if she were the very air he breathes—that every moment in her presence is a gift to be cherished. That he would count no sacrifice too great to keep her safe. That his life begins and ends with her alone.”
“…even beautiful things struggle when they are too confined.”
“…love is not the absence of danger. Love is choosing someone despite the risks. You cannot protect a person by standing between them and the world, no matter how hard you try.”
“Life is unpredictable, but there is no greater joy than loving another person without reserve, letting them see every part of you.”
“…haste is not the same as action.”
So if you like everything I’m saying, do yourself a favor, bring a copy home 😉 Regency story at its best!
*I received a complimentary copy of this book as part of its launch team but a positive review was not required. All opinions expressed are solely my own*

This was a wonderful debut novel by Marilee! The romance was my absolute favorite, and the mystery had me completely stumped!
James and Kate both work undercover, and neither wants anyone to know their true identity. James spends his days trying to hunt down the person behind his friend Henry's murder. Kate has had her heart set on James since childhood, but when he offers a marriage of convenience, she isn't willing to trade who she is for what she wants. She refuses to lessen herself for a marriage, even if it is to James. But he's persistent in his desire to court her, not knowing the outcome may have him wanting more than a "convenient marriage"... if only he can convince her. As they spend more time together and danger surrounds them, their secret identities come closer and closer to being revealed, leaving both of them wondering if they'll be accepted for who they truly are.
The romance was absolutely the highlight for me. If this had been just a romance, or even mostly a romance, that alone would have kept me reading. But truthfully I found myself getting bogged down in the details at times, and struggled to stay engaged in the story because of this. All in all, it was still a great read. I may not have been the best reader for it, and that's okay. Marilee has definitely proved herself to be an amazing writer, and I know whatever she writes next will only continue to improve.
I gave this 3.5 stars, rounded up to 4.

If you loved Sarah Eden’s penny dreadful series or the bow street runner books by Joanna Barker or Michelle Griep you will love this one! And if you haven’t read any of those yet but you love historical romance, you should give this one a try.
It’s full of mystery and suspense and swoony moments that just tie it all together to be an amazing regency spy romance! I was blown away with how well written this story was! I had to keep reminding myself this was a debut author because I was seriously impressed! It kept me up way in to the night multiple days because I just needed to know what was going to happen next and I am already eager for book two!
Kate and James had their marriage planned by their parents when they were still in the nursery, so naturally after years apart when James is told he needs to settle down Kate is the only option in his mind, if only Kate felt the same way. They both have loads of secrets they are not willing to share but circumstances keep throwing them into dangerous situations together and they start to wonder if it’s not all just coincidence.
“James, love is not the absence of danger. Love is choosing someone despite the risks. You cannot protect a person by standing between them and the world, no matter how hard you try.”
I loved this one so much and would definitely recommend it!

This book does not read like a debut Author’s book! I am so impressed! Simply put, I loved everything about this story. The cast of characters were fabulous and I look forward to the supporting characters getting their stories later in the series. The chemistry between Kate and James was on fire. The mystery was extremely well plotted and well paced and I look forward to more pieces of that in future stories as well. I read an e-book copy of this and I am purchasing a paperback copy as soon as possible(and isn’t that a gorgeous cover?!?) I definitely need a shelf trophy of this book. Everything about this book is pure perfection for me!

I really enjoyed this no spice regency romance. I’m a lover of romance, the regency time period, suspense, and the best friend’s little sister trope. This book had all of those. I am definitely impressed with this debut. The romance was swoony, it had tension and a lot of great, quotable passages. The danger and suspense was a woven web full of intrigue that bound the edges of every page. Drawing on history and interweaving in fiction, family, and friends, this book took us through England with two childhood friends in an arranged betrothal, both hiding secrets, with a mission to protect. I am looking forward to the next book in this series. The romance is just kisses, intimacy level 2. 4.5 stars rounded up to 5.
Content Warnings: Attempted Murder, Injuries, Murder

The Brief: Kate knows she is supposed to marry James, but she isn’t sure she can trust him with her heart. Or her secrets.
The Debrief: Ohmyfantasticlanta! I am smitten. Addicted. Blown Mary Poppins away. Still marinating in all its chocolate deliciousness. Debut? Schmeboo! From page one I was totally invested and this author kept weaving intrigue romance and the sweetest swoon together in a kaleidoscope of perfection.
Kate had plenty of reservations about James, even with their history. Not me. Team James captain, right here. Vulnerable. Hero. Protector. But Kate. So many layers to love. Secrets. Wishes. Her growth and the peek into her heart made for a fantastic heroine. It’s fast paced adventure with great characters and would make the BEST movie. A couple of twists that hit me out of the blue hard. And I was left with the life reminder that true love makes room for ALL of someone. And then carves out more space so they have room to grow. More reasons to read:
-childhood shenanigans
-swoony kisses
-mysteries to unravel
-strong male friendships
-learning to trust
-Aunt Edith
-the self defense lesson
-emotional depth with all the feels
-‘at last’ moment absolutely worth it
The Rhyme: James will lock up his heart and do anything to protect Kate. But when danger shows up can love help him or will he be too late?
Highly recommend! I’d go in blind. And clear your schedule. Dying for the next book! This one kind of concludes, but there is more to unravel.

This debut novel was done beautifully. I got sucked into the storyline and legitimately struggled to set it down. Kate and James were both fantastic and two sides to one coin.
The story starts with James proposing because he needs a wife to stabilize him so he can continue with his spy endeavors. Kate surprises him and requests a courtship before saying yes to his proposal. Though that’s certainly not the last surprise for either of them. As they navigate dangerous situations and find answers, they have the sweetest love story. I found myself swooning, giggling, and overall very invested in what would come next. I was not expecting certain plot twists especially at the end!
Favorite parts:
-Kate demonstrating again and again that she has a mind of her own. Especially moments that exasperated James!
-James goading Kate about her blushing
-James’ conversation with Aunt Edith
-“You know what I want you to call me.” SWOON.
-the ending- all of it. I won’t give details because spoilers. The lead up to future books and ahhh! I can’t wait.
Favorite Quotes:
“If I knew I simply had to take off my shirt to get you to stop asking questions, Kate, I would have done so long ago.”
“You know what I want to hear you call me.”
“Kate, heaven help me, but I love you. I have been falling for you since you interrupted my proposal.”
“I do not want a quiet wife. I do not want a smaller version of you. I want the woman who argues with me, deciphers what no one else can, and runs toward danger when every rule says she should stay safely behind. Your intelligence, your love of adventure, your courage—these are not traits to be ashamed of or hidden away, whatever society may say. They are some of the qualities I love most about you.”

Wow! This book is absolutely amazing! I was hooked from page one and I absolutely adored James and Kate!
The chemistry between James and Kate was so good, and the banter was on point! The settings, the friends, and all the secrets created such a vivid setting that I really felt like I was right there in the story.
I loved the emotional and tender moments between James and Kate the most. I love good banter and some humor as much as the next girl, but it’s the emotional connection that really does it for me in a love story and this one delivered perfectly! And the mystery and suspense really make this one stand out as a unique and special experience in the genre.
There is so much to say about this debut, but I really don’t want to spoil anything. But there is romance, mystery, suspense, and this book is everything you could wish for in a regency romance!

What an absolutely phenomenal book. I don’t want to give anything away, but it is a delightful mashup of historical romance, spies, arranged marriage, mystery, banter, adventure, shared history, and the best slow fall. I am so ready for the next book in the series!

What a outstanding debut! I was looking forward to this book so much as soon as the author announced the project. It was intriguing, romantic, mysterious, and well-written! I couldn't get enough! It is so hard to put into words all the things I loved about this book!
I loved James and Kate, especially their teasing banter. They had great tension and banter. Their romance weaved seamlessly in with the mystery and I loved how the author balanced that. They were great together but also such well-developed characters as well. Kate was determined and smart. James was charming and loyal. Their romance was great and I loved the focus on trusting each other and being who they were with each other in spite of the culturally norms of the time.
James and Kate were fantastic together and I loved the way the worked together throughout the book. It was interesting to see who they would trust and how they would handle all the mysteries. And the plot twists were great, I didn't see them coming! It was like I was solving the mystery right alongside them and I loved it!
The suspense, intrigue, and code breaking were fascinating. I thought the author delivered a perfect balance of romance, suspense, and the regency era. The regency vibes were perfection! All the squeals and happy dances for this book! This book took me out of my comfort zone, but it was a fantastic buddy read to do with my hubby! Reading Marilee’s debut book knowing it was outside of my usual genre was a gamble I would happily do all over again!
James is a strait-laced man about his business, earl and agent for the British government. After the recent loss of his partner and taking a little too many careless risks James’ boss, Westmarch, sidelines him until he settles down. Despite the longstanding agreement between his family and the Sutherlands, James hasn’t seen Kate since his father’s passing which makes for awkwardness in proposing.
Kate is a not so much of a wallflower, who would simply be content just being on some man’s arm. So, when James proposes, she throws out an alternate idea – a 5-week courtship to take place while they’re both in town (London) for the season! James reluctantly agrees! She has need to be in town and it will also help her become reacquainted with the now man, who held her heart as a child and teen.
While I don’t read regency, I do have some background in Victorian set mysteries. Marilee wrote this book with a lot of love and research poured into it. I had to do very little looking up to understand what was taking place, only the occasional article of clothing or accessory to understand. The intrigue, the mini cliffhangers, the unraveling of who/what was all involved… not to mention the secret intertwining of the characters was brilliant! The banter and body language between James and Kate was undeniably perfect! Time and time again my husband and I stared at each other in amazement of how well written this was! And it was only a few chapters in before I declared I needed another book for the series! Marilee made regency England come alive like no other and it had me holding my breath from time to time! Pure magic! Bravo! I eagerly await all the future books in this series!

I adored everything about Marilee Merrill’s debut novel, A Courtship of Conspiracies. From the arranged marriage to the spies and secrets to the longing glances and small touches to the romance, this book had everything. I had a hard time putting it down. It was so good.
The story follows James as he journeys home to propose to his childhood friend, Kate. When Kate doesn’t jump at the chance to become his betrothed, even though their eventual betrothal had been planned for years, James asks Kate for five weeks to court her and win her over. Unfortunately, this delay messes up all of James’ plans to get back into good graces his superior so he can continue acting as a spy for the crown. The story that follows is full of intrigue, changing loyalties, danger, banter, and so many swoony moments.
I adored both Kate and James. It was so fun to see them fighting their feelings for each other, especially Kate. I loved that James fell so quickly and hard for Kate. Kate fought so hard to keep from falling—it was so funny to see her second guess herself and James. I loved her inner dialogue.
Merrill did a wonderful job of showing Kate as a woman of her time. Kate was strong and independent, but I never felt like she had modern sensibilities. She found her own ways to be her own person and follow her own interests. Her character was brilliantly crafted and her character arc was so well done. I loved how she was true to herself
James was brilliant! He balanced the two different parts of his life with such care, taking care that his life as a spy never impacted his personal life. I loved how Kate slowly started to see the man behind the mask James showed the ton. James’ character growth was so beautiful. I loved how Kate burrowed into James’ heart and made him into a better man.
This romance is full of spies, intrigue, danger, and questionable alliances, but it is also a beautiful story of two people really seeing each other and realizing that they are better together than apart. I loved it so much.
