She makes a living in happily ever afters. She just doesn't believe in them anymore.
Vivian Sullivan designs engagement rings in her Old Town Alexandria studio. She’s the person people trust with their happily ever after, even after her own ended before the wedding.

Now she keeps things light. Safe. Predictable…Until a desperate attempt to escape an overly interested stranger ends with her kissing the nearest man on the sidewalk.

Unfortunately, he’s not just anyone. He’s Ty McCade—NHL defenseman—and he’s not nearly as easy to forget as he should be.

Ty sees the world a little differently—and he sees her in a way no one else ever has. Where others see effortless, he sees the effort. The cracks. Her truth. What starts as a moment of impulse turns into a series of unexpected run-ins neither of them can avoid, and a connection that refuses to stay casual.

Because when a guarded woman who’s sworn off love meets the one man who notices everything, keeping her distance stops being simple.

Falling is easy, but letting someone catch you?

That’sthe risk.

Thank you to the author Anne Kemp for this opportunity to read The Midnight Defensive ( Alexandria Dominion Hockey Book 2)

🌟🌟🌟🌟

As always anything Anna Kemp has written hooks me. While this one took me a couple of chapter's to get into ONLY because I was still in Leaf and Letters with Juliette and Sawyer 😉.

Vivian Sullivan designs engagement rings in her Old Town Alexandria studio. Vivian is the one people go to to trust with their big and special moments.

Vivian lives for Safe.

The cracks. Her truth.

Vivian and Ty have unexpected encounters with each other, one been when his sister takes him to look at her wedding ring.

At a late age Ty has been diagnosed with a scale of autism which hes still dealing with. Vivian lives with grandma ( who is very funny and carefree) Vivian hates asking for help, loves to fix everything and make those around her happy so they never leave her...

Ty sees the real her... who will fall first and expect their new lifestyle because things around them are changing.,

💯 there's hockey in it and sooo many funny scene. The cones got me 🤪.

Thank you again Anne for more laughter and learing more about ice Hockey 🤣

* Pro hockey player MMC
* Jewelry designer FMC
* She falls first, he falls harder
* Self-discovery
* Alexandria, VA

This is was such a sweet hockey romcom! The self-discovery theme and how the main characters learn and growthrough challenges together was sooo good!

This romcom was everything you could want - I laughed and cheered and even got a little teary-eyed at times. I really appreciated the way that the relationship between the characters was written. I don’t want to give away too much, but you get to see beyond where I feel like most romcoms leave the characters in their relationship. Having read this book before the first one, I definitely want to go back and read the first and all the others that are yet to come.

Content warnings:
* No spice

This is the second book in the Alexandria Dominion Hockey series, but can be read as a standalone.

I loved Ty and Vivian in this book. From the moment they meet - with an unexpected kiss - I was invested. I loved how their relationship grew and progressed.

Ty has recently found out that he is on the spectrum - which rocked his world but also opened a window. He now has a name for what he has felt for his whole life and also, with the help of his therapist, is able to start to get some "instructions." Anne Kemp does an amazing job of telling this story with care and sensitivity. I loved how Vivian, Ty's teammates, and sister where super supportive, met him where he was at, and saw him for who he truly was and the "magic" that he had.

I also loved how Ty was able to show up for Vivian. While he thought she had it all together and all figured out, we are reminded that we all have our journeys and things that we carry and it is important to find our person or people that can help us along the way.

And honestly, the Grandma had to be my most favorite side character! It makes me wish she was a real person so that I could adopt her as my grandma. Like it was said in the book - I want to be like her when I grow up.

I'm excited for the next book in the series as it has been announced that it will be Liam and Eva's story!

Make sure to check this one out - you're going to love it!

I received an advance copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Quotes:
"But what fun is it being reasonable?"

"'I've got you.' And the annoying part? I believe him."

"I like who I am when I'm with you."

"...it's fine to be a work in progress and to also try new things..."

"You're gonna get further in life with a smile as opposed to a grimace."

"We all have our journeys. Our things we're working through. But it's not the worst thing in the world to reach out and go through it with someone else, it it?"

"You give me somewhere to land, Vivian. Like ... a base. A place where I can park everything for a minute and - breathe."

"You feel like the epitome of every wish I've ever made without even realizing I was making it."

"You're my favorite person. My home. My peace."

"Home was never about the house. It was always about who walked through the door with you."

The Midnight Defensive is a part of the Alexandria Dominion Hockey Series written by Anne Kemp. This sweet romance book introduces readers to a main character who has recently been diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum, who is trying to figure how to deal with life, hockey and move forward without making himself stand out even more as different.

In this story, the reader is introduced to Vivian Sullivan, the co-owner of Sullivan's Fine Jewelry, who specializes in helping to make moments memorable for other people. Also, Ty McCade, defenseman for the NHL Dominion Hockey team and recently diagnosed Autism spectrum candidate. This story begins with a bang as Vivian walks up to Ty on the street and kisses him to get away from a man she accidentally made eye contact with in the coffee shop. She made every attempt to politely get away, when that didn't work, well here comes the lip lock. Little does she know that Ty is struggling to master all life is throwing at him currently.

This story is told from both Vivian and Ty's point of view so the next chapters are a variety of experiences from being locked out of the house in only a towel, romantic skates on the ice rink, team building events with the 14U girls, grandma adventures, and learning to process through the eyes of the Spectrum all while having ups and downs. Since the reader gets both views, you can truly get a view at how different the same events can seem to each person, how hard it can be to process when you are overwhelmed with too much, and how confusing it gets when someone overthinks life. The reader is able to watch both leads process the many changes from beginning to end and see what changes need to happen and that change can be good.

I highly recommend this book. I appreciated the sensitivity that Anne used when addressing the many issues those on the spectrum deal with daily as well as being newly diagnosed. But it was important to also see how the important it is for the individuals around the person to respond appropriately too. Thank you Anne for a well written book with great insight into a touchy topic and a great story line. I can't wait to read Eva and Liam's story.

I am a longtime romance lover, and sports romances, especially hockey ones, continue to be one of my favorite comfort reads. After reading “The Sunshine Offensive,” I was really excited to get Ty’s story. He was one of those characters who stood out to me immediately, so I could not wait to get to know him better. Add in forced proximity and a slow burn romance, and this book was basically calling my name.

I absolutely loved that this story is told in first person with alternating perspectives. It really helped me understand both Ty and Vivian on a deeper level. Ty especially was such a compelling character to read about. Watching him navigate relationships, routines, and the realization that he is on the autism spectrum added so much depth to the story. I appreciated how thoughtfully that aspect of his character was handled. There were moments where my heart absolutely hurt for him, especially when he became overwhelmed and pulled away because he felt like he had let people down. At the same time, seeing the people around him step up and support him made those moments even more meaningful.

I also really enjoyed Vivian. She and Ty balanced each other so well, and I liked how naturally their relationship developed over time. Their quieter moments together honestly ended up being some of my favorite parts of the book. Even though this is a closed-door romance, the chemistry and emotional connection between them still came through very strongly.

All in all, I really loved this book. It had emotional depth, strong character growth, and a romance that felt genuine and earned. I am already looking forward to whatever comes next in this series.

The Midnight Defensive by Anne Kemp is the second book in the Alexandria Dominion Hockey series. If you enjoy a closed door hockey romance that only has kissing, this is the book for you! There are moments in this book that will 100% pull on your heart strings.

Synopsis:
She makes a living in happily ever afters. She just doesn't believe in them anymore.

Vivian Sullivan designs engagement rings and heirlooms in her Old Town Alexandria studio. She's the person people trust with their happiest moments. Because it's easier to believe in love when it belongs to someone else.

The last time she believed in it for herself, she never made it to the wedding.

Now she keeps things light. Keeps everyone else taken care of. Until Ty McCade starts paying attention in a way no one else ever has.

A star defenseman for the Alexandria Dominion, Ty has always experienced the world at a different frequency than most, and learned early on not to show it. But from the moment they cross paths, he watches Vivian the same way he watches the ice. Like he's already seen the move she's about to make.

Where everyone else sees effortless, he sees the effort.

Getting close means letting someone past the life she's built around other people's love stories––and discovering that the man who notices everything has spent years making sure no one notices him.

The question isn't whether they're falling.

It's whether they'll let themselves land.

Amazing! I am so happy that I spent the day reading this beautiful love story. It was the sweetest! It’s a closed door romance so it keeps it more about the chemistry and attraction with some low heat, but does not include spicy scenes.
Ty and Vivian’s interaction on the street at the beginning is so much fun!
Ty plays hockey for the Dominion and Vivian runs a jewelry store. Things don’t automatically evolve but once they start to it is so easy to see that they are perfect together! I adore them and I loved watching them fall for each other while spending time together and being there for each other. They had to navigate the challenges that Ty faces daily being on the lower level of the spectrum. He sees and feels things differently but that made him so honest and genuine. He was so easy to fall for. Vivian is a genuine person herself and that makes for the best foundation for them to build on besides their physical attraction.
I just can’t say enough about how loving, and entertaining their story is! Anne does a beautiful job staying true to how life is for a neurodivergent person and I love that we got his point of view so we could understand how he was feeling. It was so important to the story. Vivian is so perfect for him because she does not treat him differently and instead allows herself to understand what certain situations are like for him and how they make him feel. I think I have a girl crush on her. I also loved how music played a part in their story. Actually, I
loved every moment of their story including the bonus epilogue where we get a look into the not too distant future.
Fantastic read! I look forward to the next book in the series!

I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC copy of this cozy, sweet hockey romance. Thank you to Anne Kemp and team for allowing me a sneak peek at this delightful novel.

I knew from the very first sentence that I was going to enjoy this book:

“There are few choices in life that I regret more than making eye contact with a man holding an oat milk latte.”

Honestly? Relatable.

I think most women have experienced those awkward social encounters where we’re conditioned to spare a man’s feelings instead of just being direct. Unfortunately, none of my own awkward encounters have ever resulted in me having the confidence to walk up to an NHL acquaintance and plant a kiss on him to avoid rejecting someone else. To be fair, I don’t live in a city with an NHL team, so professional hockey players are not exactly abundant — but I digress.

This chaotic little moment launches Vivian and Ty into the sweetest, coziest romance, and I absolutely adored it.

I loved that the characters are a little older, more mature, and established in their lives. Vivian has a career, a failed engagement, and complicated family dynamics. Ty is a defenseman for an NHL team who has recently been diagnosed with autism and is learning more about himself, his mental health, and how to navigate life with that new understanding.

Not only is he a sexy hockey player who is genuinely kind, but he also takes accountability for his mental health. And did I mention he willingly goes to therapy? Swoon.

This book is sweet, cozy, relatable, and heartfelt. I really appreciated the way Anne Kemp handled mental health with care and compassion, while still keeping the story light, warm, and romantic.

This is basically the Hallmark Channel of hockey romance, and I’m so thankful I got the chance to read an ARC copy.

I received an advanced copy from the author; this is my honest review of The Midnight Defensive

This book hooked me from the start! From the very beginning of chapter 1, it grabs your attention and makes you smile, anticipating more entertainment and swoon! Also, make sure to read Anne’s authors note in the beginning💛

Vivian and Ty’s story is 100% worth reading if you enjoy
🏒 sweet hockey romance
💍HEA with lots of laughs
💎 self-discovery and growth
❤️‍🔥lots of tension (the best kind!) and kissing
🧠🥼neurodivergent representation

The chemistry and banter started strong and continues through the entire book. The humor, strength, and dedication to grow built into the story makes this book so heartfelt and meaningful for me.

Minor Spoilers from here:

On a personal note; the Magic 🪄 of this story might be the best response I’ve read to someone discovering neurodivergence in themselves. As someone who has worked with and loves people with Autism for over 20 years, this is amazing—a great perspective shift and so empowering to anyone who can relate.

Some of My favorite parts:

The medical TMI that drives Vivian to Ty-so relatable and so funny!

The kiss in the alleyway! I enjoyed the step by step thought process from Ty’s perspective and Vivian’s reactions! So much tension and swoon, with great humor built in!

Ty’s dedication to self-understanding and personal growth- this is an impressive example if taking ownership and focusing on what you can control (things I am working on in my own life!)

The closet kiss—❤️‍🔥🔥💥

Vivian Sullivan spends her days designing the perfect wedding rings for people who are ready to take that next step... doing her part to help them find their happily ever afters, even though she is fairly certain she'll never find her own. Then one little kiss changes everything...

The Midnight Defensive brings us into the life of a woman who has given up on finding her own happily ever after, even though she spends her days helping others take that next step. After her own wedding went up in smoke, before they had the chance to say "I do," she decided that she was just one of those people not meant for it. Then she shares an unexpected kiss with a stranger on the sidewalk on day and things in her life take a unexpected little turn.

Kissing hockey star Ty McCade was nothing something she planned, but now that it's happened it's something she cannot forget. That one little kiss intertwines their lives in ways they never saw coming and helps them to see that maybe, just maybe, they were meant to find love too.

This was such a sweet and heartfelt fall, their were moments that had me laughing and more tender moments that made me swoon a bit. I really enjoyed this first time read, it was refreshing to read a story that hints at love and all that goes with it, but leaves things to your imagination. Highly recommend you take a chance on this one, it's words will keep you captivated the whole way through!

The first chapter had me literally laughing out loud as Vivian decides to open herself up to meeting someone and it turns into one of the most awkward encounters that she can’t find a way out of … until she kisses an acquaintance at random. From that point on, I was hooked.

Vivian is a jewelry designer at the family jewelry store that her grandparents started. While she loves designing tangible reminders of people’s most precious memories, she has ideas for transforming the store into something more, but is afraid of bringing these ideas up to her grandmother.

Ty is a hockey player for the Dominion and on the ice is where life makes the most sense to him. He has recently been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, and is working with a therapist to understand what that means for him. He’s also stepping in to coach his sister’s 14U girls hockey team while she is wedding planning.

Ty and Vivian get forced back together as she is not only the designer of his sister’s wedding rings, but also has been asked to help with some team bonding activities for the girls. Vivian is patient with Ty and makes him feel truly seen.

If you like a book with a love story where the characters grow toward love slowly, teenagers who make you question what is going on in their heads, and the hilarity of a grandkid “raising” a grandparent, then this book is for you.

I am emotionally wrecked after reading this book. Even days later, Ty and Vivianne's journey to their HEA is living rent free in my brain. Their connection is instant and the slow burn build up to the kiss in the alley (and don't even get me started on the kiss at the ice rink (so much swoon)) to how she helps him settle his overwhelm to inevitable point where he breaks (there's so much going on in his life that I was only surprised that it didn't happen sooner). I couldn't have been more invested in two characters and their journey.

Ty just learned he is on the Autism Spectrum and is learning to manage his reactions to the world around the same time that he meets Vivianne in a great meet cute. They continue running into each other because they have overlapping friends (they have been on the periphery of each other's lives for a while) and they end up working together when Ty's sister asks him to coach her high school hockey team while she's planning her wedding and asks Vivianne to help with a weekly team bonding event. He stumbles a bit; doesn't always say the right thing, but she is patient and gives him space, balancing and calming him in unexpected ways.

This book will grab you from the beginning with a bit of humor and hold onto you as you fall in love with Ty at the same time Vivianne does.

Series: Alexandria Dominion Hockey (Book 2)

Tropes/Representation: Hockey Romance, ASD Representation, Forced Proximity, Slow Burn, Dual POV, Closed Door Romance

Review:
As a longtime fan of Anne Kemp, I always look forward to her releases, and Midnight Defensive absolutely did not disappoint! It is just as fantastic, heartwarming, and beautifully written as her previous books, delivering everything I love about her storytelling while bringing fresh, meaningful elements to the ice.

Being the second book in the Alexandria Dominion Hockey series, it was fun to revisit returning characters. Kemp does a wonderful job of maintaining a rich, interconnected world, and the strong friendships and underlying sense of "found family" among the characters truly shine here.

What sets this book apart is how incredibly refreshing the character dynamics are. The main characters, Ty and Vivian, are emotionally intelligent, which makes their connection feel mature, earned, and deeply resonant. The story features excellent ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) representation through the hero, Ty, which was handled with immense care, respect, and authenticity. Watching him navigate his world and seeing the way he and Vivian connect on a genuine level was easily one of the best parts of the book.

Thanks to the dual POV, we get a front-row seat to both characters' inner thoughts. This perspective adds so much emotional depth to the slow-burn romance and allows you to really root for them as they navigate their vulnerabilities and forced-proximity tension.

True to Anne Kemp’s signature style, this is a top-tier closed door romance. The chemistry between Ty and Vivian is undeniable and filled with sizzling tension, proving once again that a romance can be incredibly swoon-worthy and high-emotion without needing explicit content.

Thank you for the ARC of this book.

When I see Anne Kemp has a new book coming out I know it's an instant must read! Her books are always so warm and cozy! This one was no different. I'm loving this series! I love that this book has us learning about a character that learns he has autism. I loved understanding how they feel and their struggles. This book will have you laughing as usual, smiling like crazy, getting emotional, melt your heart and leave you with an incredible ending!!

Ty is a defenseman for the Dominions hockey team. Vivian runs her family jewelry store. Ty is helping his sister with the girls hockey players and Vivian is helping them create jewelry and make their trophy as part of team bonding. Ty and Vivian have such amazing chemistry and as they spend more time together you can feel their connection. These two both have things they need to let go of and together they can learn to heal.

I loved getting to spend more time with all the characters we met in the first book and I loved getting to know the new ones. Vivian's Grandma was a great addition. This book will fill your heart with joy and leave you with a big smile! I HIGHLY recommend this book and series!

Thank you Anne Kemp for allowing me to read this ARC for my honest opinion.

Wonderful, Sweet, Slow Burn, Hockey Rom-Com That I Did Not Put Down!

I loved this book and read it in one sitting on a rainy afternoon because I did not want to stop. The story is told via both Vivian and Ty's POV which is perfect because the reader gets to know and appreciate both of them as characters. There were funny moments - their "meet cute(s) - plural because I count the "towel incident, witty banter but also heartfelt moments as they open up to each other about their pasts, families and his new ASD diagnosis and how he is dealing with it. I loved both Vivian's, his sisters, and his teammate's acceptance of his diagnosis and their willingness to help him with his new coping strategies to manage his symptoms. I also enjoyed the "family" aspect of their friends and actual family - her grandmother was an especially fun character. They both grew individually, but more importantly they enhanced each other's growth as a couple. The book is part of a series, but is easily read as a standalone and I can't wait for the next book in the series - Enjoy!

I was sent an ARC by the author and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review.

The Midnight Defensive is the second book in the Alexandria Dominion series. It can definitely be read as a standalone and can be read in any order, but I would recommend reading in order because some of the characters overlap in each book.

Vivian is a jewelry designer spending her days creating beautiful engagement rings. Trouble is she doesn’t believe in happily ever afters after her failed engagement. When a coffee date goes a little sideways, she runs into Ty who helps her out of the sticky situation. Ty is a defenseman on the Dominion hockey team and has just recently been diagnosed with autism. When they are forced to work together, falling might just be inevitable, but will she take the risk and let him catch her?

I love that both Ty and Vivian went through a journey of growth and self discovery. I love that Ty was determined to learn how to navigate his new normal, and that he felt comfortable enough to talk openly about therapy and his struggles with Vivian. She was so supportive and didn’t push him to be anyone other than who he is. Their chemistry and banter was fantastic too!

If you love a slow burn that’s full of heart and hockey with a neurodivergent hero, then be sure to check this one out! You won’t regret it!

Thank you to the author for the copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.

The characters were really engaging from the start. Their first meeting was so different, yet special. The romance was super swoonworthy and some of the moments were just... perfect.

Ty was incredible to read about. The way he faced the challenges he was suddenly thrown in life, was admirable. You can't help but like his character. The author did a great job writing a neurodivergent main character. I knew I wanted to read Vivian's story after reading the Sunshine Offensive, and she did not disappoint.

I loved the way Ty and Vivian were so open and considerate with each other. The book was about bringing people together, and finding the one you want to be with. There was a lot of emotional depth, along with character development. It was obvious how both of them changed for the better through the length of this book.

The forced proximity element was striking, because the universe kept pushing them together and I was so here for it! I loved the relationship between their siblings and family. Especially Vivian's grandma. I adored her personality.

I received an advanced reader copy to review this book and all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Anne Kemp has done it again 🥹 there’s something so magical about her books. Thank you Booked With the Emilys and Anne Kemp for the gifted advance copy! The Midnight Defensive is book two of Kemp’s Alexandria Dominion Hockey series. While you could read it as a standalone, I definitely recommend starting with book one.

Seriously, Anne - you’ve created something so special with this series. Vivian and Ty are absolute magic both together and individually. Kemp’s writing is beautiful, heartfelt and so emotional. You can tell how much she really loves her characters and the world she’s built. And the banter! The banter is fabulous, and I think my favorite character (aside from Ty) is Vivian’s grandma.

What really makes this book stand out is the sensitivity and care Kemp put into researching and writing a neurodivergent character. She wanted to do it properly, and she nailed it. The amount of support given to Ty from Vivian, his teammates, and his family actually made me pause and put the book down a few times. I cannot recommend this book enough - it’ll stick with me for a long time!

Thank you to the author/publisher for providing me with an Advance Reader Copy (ARC) in exchange for an honest review.

The Midnight Defensive (Book 2) was a wonderful romance that kept me invested from beginning to end. One of my favorite parts of this book was getting to learn more about each of the characters. Anne Kemp did an excellent job developing their personalities, backgrounds, and relationships, making them feel real and easy to connect with.

The romance was sweet, engaging, and emotionally satisfying. I enjoyed watching the characters grow individually while also seeing their relationship develop throughout the story. The character development added so much depth and made me care about what happened to them.

The reason this wasn’t quite a full 5 stars for me is that there were a few moments where I wanted just a little more, but overall I thoroughly enjoyed the story and had a hard time putting it down.

If you enjoy character-driven romances with well-developed relationships and plenty of heart, I would definitely recommend this book.

Vivian impulsively kisses Ty, wanting his presence to deter the attention of a coffee date gone wrong. Yes, it was awkward, but at least she'll never really see him again. Only Ty is everywhere. In her store with his sister, at the bar down the street, and coaching the team she just volunteered with.

Read if you like:
-Distraction Kisses
-Friends to Lovers
-Slow Burn

While I liked The Midnight Defensive, I didn't love it. There was a lot that was fun, like the surprise kiss on the street and Vivian and Ty working together with the girls hockey team. The hockey team was so cute and just what both of them needed. I also like that Ty learned he is autistic late in life. But overall, I felt that the book lacked character growth. It felt like Vivian was avoiding her breakup rather than growing from it. And while Ty kept talking about adjusting to the knowledge of his diagnosis, I didn't see him actually adjusting on page. A bit more character growth would have taken this from good to great.

Opening this story, you are immediately in the whirlwind and it is a great ride. Ty is a pro hockey player who finds himself being kissed on the street by Vivian who is just trying to get away from a former date disaster who can't take a hint. She just did what seemed the simplest way out but it turns out she opened a floodgate. Now, she and Ty seem to find each other everywhere and it is sweet to see their friendship develop.

Seeing Vivian embrace her personal dream of what her family jewelry store should be is lovely. The support offered by friends is lovely. Same with Ty's hockey playing and friends who strengthen and support him. Friendship ideals, for sure.

Anne Kemp writes sweet, clean stories that showcase beautiful relationships. This one fits into the hockey realm, as well as having a character dealing with a new diagnosis of autism. The story is wonderful and a good read.

I received an ebook copy of this title from the author. All opinions are my own.

Ty is a defenseman for the Alexandria Dominions, the gorgeous six foot something junk who just coming to terms with a recent Neurodivergent diagnosis which he’s hidden in the last 30yrs. Vivian is the beautiful jewelry maker, who’s selfless, kind and has the biggest heart. It’s no wonder Ty fell hard, she completely gets him, but she fell first, and probably just as hard. Their friendship to more was a slow burn, both weary but unable to deny the chemistry they have. The kisses are swoon worthy.. slow and steady wins the race as they say and this one definitely wins! I can just see it now, after Sawyer and now Ty, this team will be full of saps and I’m here for it. Book 2 in the Alexandria Dominion Hockey Series, a standalone with interconnected characters, closed door romance.

I loved this book! If I could have read it in one sitting I would have, but my adorable family and adult responsibilities required me to take a few breaks, so it took me an entire day to finish. 😆 This book gave fantastic insight to how the brain works of someone on the spectrum. Ty could not have asked for someone better than Vivian and vice versa. They are so perfect together. I appreciated the slow build of their relationship; it felt so natural and realistic. I cannot wait for Eva and Liam’s story next!
A few quotes that made me laugh:

“…there’s glitter on them there boobs and I don’t want to look,…”

“Maybe I just enjoy watching you spiral.” “I am not spiraling.” “You’re absolutely spiraling.” “I’m cautiously concerned.” “That’s just spiraling with better branding.”

“I’m your sister. Drama is part of the job description.”

The Midnight Defensive is a closed door hockey romance. Ty is an NHL player who recently received an ASD diagnosis that he is working through. Vivian is a jewelry designer who has basically given up on love since her own relationship fell apart. They keep getting thrown together unexpectedly after an interesting introduction… and end up helping each other heal from their pasts and learn to love themselves well

Some of my favorites:

- the meet cute (and the super awkward conversation that led to it!!)
- getting locked out
- the alley kiss/the closet kiss - can’t decide!
- found family
- the personal growth for both Ty and Vivian
- meddling from her grandmother and his sister

The ASD representation was done so well. Make sure you read the author’s note at the beginning!

I received an ARC of this book and this is my honest opinion.

I loved Ty and Vivian!

They are very realistic and fun. Their first meeting was cute, but their second one at Grans had me grinning thru the whole scene.

This is a great read for hockey romance fans that want a little more.

Anne does a great job of “entering” the neurodivergent world in a way that makes sense. Her no nonsense approach via her characters allows readers that are considered “normal“, to catch a glimpse of brilliant minds, like Ty’s, that sometimes get wrapped up in the challenges of everyday life.

She cracks open the door into a world few of us get to see and fewer understand. The way that Vivian and Ty worked together to explore and understand one another’s differences was fantastic! They are an adorable, very real couple. I hope to see them a lot in the next book.

Rcvd an ARC from the author.

We meet jeweler Vivian who ia trying to get away from a bad date when she sees a man in the distance and then go up to him and kisses him. Thr funny part is one of her bffs sees the whole thing and introduces her to Ty. Ty cant comprehend what just happened besides a beautiful woman kissing him. He goes with his sister Emma to pick up her rings when Vivian is in the shop. Vivian cant belive that she kissed her clients fiance so she apologizes and it turns into embarrassing laughter on all parts. There is smtg about Ty that has Vivian keep thinking about him. Plus they will see each other more as they help out Emma's girls hockey team. Ty cant keep his mind off Vivian...she helps calm him when his mind is running a mile a minute. What a nice cute-meet between Ty and Vivian and how their friendship evolves.

From the moment a surprise kiss from Vivian is planted on Ty, he feels that aside from his newly diagnosed Autism, his world is about to flip upside down.

This was a moving and special book. We get to see Ty look at the world he's adapted to with a diagnosis he got later in life. It's beautiful that he does the work to try and understand why things are the way they are for him and how he's worked and still needs to work in different ways to thrive.

I love that he has Vivian by his side. She is a quiet beacon of light for Ty. I love that they get to work together with his sister, Emma's girl hockey team. It was a great way for them to grow close while serving others. I love the playlists that they curate at the local bar (what a fun idea) and how similar they are in certain tastes and what songs mean to them. The epilogues had me tearing up, just wonderful ends to this story.

The Midnight Defensive is a sweet and heartfelt romance that had me giggling and swooning throughout.

I really enjoyed Vivian and Ty’s story. Their meet-cute had me laughing, and their chemistry and banter were such a highlight. Both characters feel well-developed, and I loved watching them grow both individually and together. I especially appreciated how supportive Vivian was of Ty and how their connection deepened in a natural, believable way.

The neurodivergent representation is handled with care and feels thoughtful and respectful, which I really appreciated.

Overall, this is a cozy, closed-door hockey romance with strong character chemistry, emotional depth, and a comforting feel. A really enjoyable read.

Thank you to Anne Kemp for the ARC.
